WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington’s municipal golf course will be closed Monday because of sub-freezing temperatures.

Golf course crews and municipal golf association volunteers put tarps on all of the golf course greens Sunday afternoon, along with the greens at the First Tee holes next to the course.

The tarps are put on when temperatures are forecast to go below 25 degrees for several hours, to prevent what’s called “winter kill” from damaging the greens.

Crews are expected to remove the tarps Tuesday morning, and the course is scheduled to reopen to players Tuesday at noon.
