If your hands start the backswing before your body, you’ll lose width and fall out of sync — leading to an overswing and poor contact.
In this drill, choke down on the club and set it beside your trail hip. You’ll instantly feel how the body should lead the motion, keeping the arms connected and the backswing compact. Use your core to start the turn and keep everything moving together for a more consistent strike.

So, if you’re somebody who gets the hands and arms working independently on the way back, this often leads to being too narrow and no real synchronization in the back swing. From here, we just have to make a load of compensations in order to square the face up. So, here’s a great drill. Go ahead and choke down the golf club and place the grip end of the club to the right side of your hip here. Now, if you take your setup now, if I try and move my hands and arms independently of the body here, this is just going to get stuck. So, you can’t do it from here. So instead, focus on allowing the body to do the work. The body’s going to lead the arms. Super light grip pressure. This is going to help now synchronize the arms and body so you can create good width in the back swing. And just by doing this, it’s going to lead to more consistency when you come back to impact.
