Prime Video and NHL Productions revealed the trailer for the upcoming original hockey documentary Saving Sakic, premiering on April 16 for Prime members in Canada and April 17 for ESPN+ subscribers in the U.S. The documentary follows the high-stakes saga that ensued when Colorado Avalanche Chairman/CEO Charlie Lyons was blindsided by an attempt to sign away the captain of his team, Joe Sakic. With only seven days to raise $15 million to save his star, Charlie finds a lifeline from an unexpected place – Hollywood.
Joe Sakic garnered a slew of accolades over his 20-season NHL career, first for the Quebec Nordiques, who selected him in the first round of the 1987 NHL Draft, and later for the Colorado Avalanche after the Nordiques relocated to Denver. In Colorado, he captured two Stanley Cups, won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, and the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. As part of NHL’s Centennial celebration in 2017, Sakic was voted one of the 100 Greatest Players in League history. The Burnaby, British Columbia native also won gold medals representing Canada at each of the Olympic Winter Games, World Cup of Hockey, IIHF World Championships and IIHF World Junior Championships. Sakic won a third Stanley Cup as General Manager of the Avalanche in 2022 and is currently the club’s President of Hockey Operations.
Saving Sakic is directed by Jay Nelson, with executive producers Steve Mayer, Ross Bernard, Craig Axelrod for NHL Productions, and Gary Cohen for Triple Threat TV. Saving Sakic joins sports content on Prime Video, including Original documentaries Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, Kelce, All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs, and Sportsnet on Prime Video Channels.

The best Joe in hockey.
This guy was my hero growing up. My family knows Joe's family very well being croatian. He came to see me in Denver when I played a hockey tournament down there and signed everyone's stuff. I'd love for my son to meet him. Joe is top notch person and hope to see him again one day.
I hope they find the money to keep him. He’s a great hockey player.

Burnaby Joe!
I have always been a ranger fan but not always a fan of what they did. This attempt to steal Sakic was a low point, taking advantage of their belief that Colorado could not come up with the up front money. Glad he stayed where he belonged. An all time great. By the way, two other low points were signing Lindros and every minute Sean Avery disgraced the uniform by wearing it.
Rangers should have kept Messier that summer.
I’ve always felt we don’t have enough 30 for 30 style docs about hockey. Can’t wait to see this! Please keep ‘em coming.
I remember being an emotional wreck when all this was happening. I was only 10 at the time and Joe was my favorite player by a mile. I even used #19 when I played Jr Hockey. I remember being huddled up with all my Sakic gear while wearing my Sakic jersey as I anxiously waited for that final news conference where they revealed he'd be staying with Colorado. I was beyond relieved, and happy, he was staying an Avs player. I literally started crying. Sakic, Roy, Forsberg, Foote, Deadmarsh, and all these guys gave me the best childhood ever as a young hockey fan.
I wish… things weren't so money focused. "My job was to find the money". Come on now. The dude was the face of the Avs and you're telling me it's just about money? He couldn't just say "nah, the millions they're paying me is enough millions, thanks."

My favorite hockey player. The most classiest, humble human being I have ever had the privilege of meeting as a kid.

If he loved Colorado so much why didn't he just stay and take less money and build around them? Seems like he kind of created the issue.
