just about set to go. And today’s starter, Clayton Beater. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. Jared Triolo, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. fouled off. He was late. And that’s in the dirt. And a count. Two and one. Foul ball there. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Has room and he makes the catch. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, O’Neal Cruz. And Boo, we’re talking about a guy who has great wheels and then puts them to good use. He’s the team leader in stolen bases and runs scored. Man, using his speed to just get into scoring position and then just flying home when the guys behind him put the ball in play. I absolutely love watching him do it because he causes havoc on the base paths. Spencer Horowitz in the box with one away as he takes ball one. And another ball. That one drifts inside and he walked him. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Brian Reynolds here. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Horowitz the base runner at first with one out. And there’s a foul ball. Fights it off. He’ll see another fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. That’s off the mark. It’s a ball in two strikes. Man at first, one away. down. This one in the dirt. [Music] Misses outside and the count’s full. Really good take, especially with two strikes. that to right and that will drop foul. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Base hit center field. They hold the runner at second. So another base hit could get us our first run in this one. Batting fourth rightielder. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. The other way. Base hit into the outfield. throw back in. Holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. Couple of singles back to back. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Now it’s the second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. First offering and it just misses. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Garcia to second to first. Not in time. Great effort there. I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Fast ball for a strike. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. First inning and already up to 23 pitches. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. All you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch. Get yourself out of the gym, back into the dugout. [Applause] Two on, two outs, and a swing and a miss. Good job at damage control right there. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Pirates one and the Nationals nothing. Back here in Nationals Park and today’s starter, Mitch Keller. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. CJ Abrams the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one [Music] bats in there and one and one outside with a breaking ball. That one misses. Three and one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] fouled off again and it remains three and two. The pitch inside and that’s ball four. And that’s their first base runner of the game. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Next for the Nationals is the DH James Wood. Ball one there. [Applause] Nobody out. Runner at first. [Applause] Next offering is down low. And now two and 0. [Applause] [Applause] Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. ground ball right side. It squirts through and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. and you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. Here’s Josh Bell. And that’s in there at the knees. Abrams on third. Wood at first with nobody out. [Applause] That one finds the zone and that is strike two. Well, in this situation with a runner on first, less than two outs, some say, “Hey, get the ground ball, double play with two strikes.” Some people say, “Get the strike out.” I think you just execute your pitch. Make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it’s going to be. Look out for the double play. Foul ball still 0 and two. Grounder might be two. Quickly to second for one and a run scores on the double play. First and third, nobody out. You’re thinking you’ve got it lined up for a pretty big inning right here. So that double play is pretty deflating. They get the run in, but now they’re starting all over. And stepping in, the rookie left fielder, Dalon Lyle. First pitch just misses. Two down. Nobody on tap foul at the plate. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. That’s down and in. Two out. Base is empty. Next offering misses down and away. swing and a high-fly ball right field. McCutchen after it and makes the grab and that’ll do it. One run on one base hit, no errors and no one left. Second inning coming up from our nation’s capital. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Now here is number 34. Get out of here. Beater back to work. Strike one. I think he was sitting off speed there. [Music] Inside corner and that’s called a strike. Daryl Parker assigned to umpiring duty behind home plate and Boog with DP. It’s sort of a coin flip on those borderline corner pitches. Doesn’t really favor one side of the plate more than the other. Sometimes you’ll get a little extra the plate and sometimes you won’t. It does seem like he evens it out over the course of a game though. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. That one not close. Now two and two. Got him swinging. Slider got him for strike three. He had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. At the plate. Giwan Bay shortened a bunt and missed it. 0 and one. All right, just missed. Let’s go. Come on. Not close with that one. And it’s two and one. Tied up here in the early going. He had a foul ball. Good job to fight that one off. Next pitch is downstairs. battling here as he fouls it away. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch. Even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame. And that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. So, two down now and here is Henry Davis. And it’s fouled away. Adio one. Let’s go, Dad. hit in the air left field. Lyle and makes the play and that’s out number three. We go to the bottom of the second tied one apiece. And we’re back. Bottom half of inning number two. And now up for Washington, Luis Garcia. Garcia just missed. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. That one catches the zone. One and two. [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. [Applause] [Applause] swing in a ball hit out towards left center field that gets down for a hit and a good start to the inning. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Riley Adams in the box now takes strike one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But left the bat on his shoulder. That misses. One and one. The sweeper catches the low part of the zone for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And that is downstairs. And now two balls and two strikes. That one missed on this count. runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. Dylan Cruz in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Swing and he breaks his bat, pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Batting seven, right fielder Dylan Cruz. Dylan Cruz digging in for the Nationals. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Outside low. Ball one. [Applause] And there’s a ball. [Applause] inside. Just missed. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Garcia at first. One gone. [Applause] [Applause] And ball four to a board. Two on, one out. Next to hit for the Nats, Brady House just missed. out of the double grounds one to short. Triolo slings to first in time. Oh, we talked about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Up now for Washington. Robert Hassel to third. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. All right. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two outs, two in scoring position. Bottom half of inning number two. And a count one and two. He was a little out front but did a good job keeping the hands back long enough to foul that pitch off. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So they strand a pair. We play two full all tied 1-1. Back in Washington DC onto the third inning. And now the Pirates leadoff man Jared Triolo swing and a liner foul off to the right and a swing and a miss there. The Nationals have some action going in the pen. Cole Henry looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez number 50 getting cranked up as well. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. hit on the ground to short and one away in the top of the third. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Spencer Horowitz digs in now. He walked and came around to score his first time up. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Horowitz measures 6 feet even 27 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season in the air out towards right center. Hassel gets under it. Brings it in and that quickly two away. Now batting designated hitter Brian. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Clayton Beater won’t go any further tonight and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. A new arm into the game, the righty Jake Irvin. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. So, now here’s the DH. Brian Reynolds, one for one with a single so far. just missed and that one fouled off. [Music] Two outs. That misses the zone. Two and one. Foul ball. [Music] Two down. Nobody on. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. Down in order go to Pirates. Score remains tied 1-1. Back here in Nationals Park, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. CJ Abrams, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, these Nats do a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Next offering in there for a strike and that is strike one. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today. [Music] goes down swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know, it happens. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] One down. Base is empty. And that’s him for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. That misses the zone. Now one and two. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Next pitch misses way outside. [Applause] Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Tasked with one, two, and three to start this inning, but no trouble so far. I’m sure he’d love to strike out the side here. Make a little statement, but you got to be composed in this spot. Focus on getting this next guy. You got two good outs. Want to get the third one and avoid the middle of that lineup coming up with a base runner. could become dangerous. And first offering is fouled off. No, that’s down. bounced out to short in plenty of time to first and it’s a one-tw inning. Nothing doing it for Washington. Score remains deadlocked at one and welcome back to the ballpark. Start of the fourth leading off Andrew McCutchen. Missed with a change up. Ball one. You know these Pirates as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak. Oh, now this one’s high and deep way back there. On its way gone. And that should quiet this home crowd. And the Pirates take the lead. It’s 2-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, I’m sure there’s a big grin on his face right now. Boo. He’s probably had some of those that didn’t stay fair, but off the bat it looked like he was going to bend foul. Was able to keep it in there. Tucked it nicely and he gets the jog around the bases. Good for him. The batter now Nick Gonzalez check swing went around. Strike one. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. line drive to short and caught. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. So O’Neal Cruz is named after Paul O’Neal. That was his father’s idol in baseball. So he named his son O’Neal. In 2022, they finally met each other when the Pirates played the Yankees in New York. And I’m sure that was a moment that O’Neal Cruz will never forget. And a foul ball. [Music] That smashed towards center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Up next for the Pirates, third base. Now the third baseman struck out swinging his first time. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. That one finds the zone going on. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Two outs. And that one is downstairs. And it’s one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One in the inning for the Pirates on this solo homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Dalen Lyall just missed activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Dowry Moretta up and throwing. Machinsky, a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. [Applause] Right side hard hit. Tosses to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting second base Louise Garcia. Here’s the second baseman Luis Garcia. A single his first time. Pitch misses outside. One and0. [Applause] [Applause] That’s down and in. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. Riley Adams in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And the tying run is on base. That just came apart right there. four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. Derek Shelton out of the dugout and he will make the move. Mitch Keller departs. Gave him a good effort as he exits with a lead. And we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. So they turn things over to the righty Dowry Moretta. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One down, runner at first. And now Riley Adams, he’s 0 for one. Right through there for a strike. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. The next offering misses one and two to count. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. just tried to overthrow that [Applause] down the line and it’s fouled. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner of the plate. Got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes. And now the right fielder, Dylan Cruz, he reached out to walk his first time. Swings through that one. Right now, they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. [Music] lifted in the air left field pretty well struck and that’s the inning. Unbelievable. So, one left for Washington and our score remains 2-1. Now, pitching. back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Cole Henry, well, walks have been a big issue for him this year. So, I expect these hitters to be patient up there. Well, one-run game at the plate for Pittsburgh. Giwan Bay struck out swinging his first time. Just missed. You know, these Pirates, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark, and unfortunately, sometimes it’s right into a glove. But still, they’ve hit nine line drives so far, and that’s something they should feel very good about. And that one is lifted in the air. Cruz sizing this one up, makes the grab. One down. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right and that’s just baseball sometimes. So up next, Henry Davis fly to left his first time. Just missed. [Music] And another ball. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. His seventh home run of the season. It’s 3-1. That one just sounded different. Yeah, it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. Let’s break out the Stackcast numbers. And Singy, it tells us this home run was projected at more than 450 ft. Yeah. And not many players can hit home runs as far as this one. That’s a special feeling. And I’m sure he was giggling a little bit as he was jogging around the bases. That was one heck of a swing he put on the baseball. Jared Triolo, the next pirate to hit. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. Now the one popped up first base side. Bell under it. Nabs it and there’s two away. Now batting the first base Spencer Horwitz. So digging in Spencer Horowitz. He’s 0 for one. in the air left field. Lyle sizes this one up. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. And this is now a 31 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Carmen Majinski. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Now here is Brady House. Grounded out his first time. Basement Brady House misses inside and that is ball one. You know, these Nationals need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for them so far. Zero extra base hits in the game, so it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through, but it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there. Outside low and the count’s even at two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. towards first and that’s just foul. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And foul ball. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Oh, look at the stop. Throw to first and they get the out. Now batting center fielder Robert. And now up for Washington. Robert Hassel to third. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Come on. Let’s go. on the ground right side and it stays fair around first heading for two. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay the tag out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. A strike out and a walk. Let’s go DC. That pitch gets the corner. That’s strike one. Two down. Doon. Oh man, that smoked him on the mound. Gets it there in time though. And they get it out on the play. He didn’t have a choice. Slow roller comes in offbalance bare-handed strike to first base. That’s an outstanding play to end the inning. Back here in Nationals Park, top six. And now the DH Brian Reynolds. Henry back to work. Henry a 64 righty. He features a fourseam fast, a slur, a sinker, a cutter, and he works in a change up. [Music] stays alive. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball. But it stays nothing and two. [Music] Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Here’s Cutch to the ditch. He’s already homered in this game. first pitch and he just misses. And another ball. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. That one missed. That one finds the zone and the count is three and one. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Well, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a tee, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Gonzalez, the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Oh, that’s that slerf right there. He threw it extremely well. You talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. That one’s in there. No balls, two strikes. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. McCutchen leads off first with one away. Man, that got him square in the mask. And that one in the air center field makes the grab and there’s two gone. So a man aboard O’Neal Cruz getting ready to hit. Bowl for two in this one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. Late swing. Fouled to the left. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And there’s a ball. [Music] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s out number three. So one left for Pittsburgh as the lead remains 3-1. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Dennis Santana. He’s been so good against lefties. Number 60, Dennis Santana. Now it’s the DH, James Wood, one for two. This kid picked up in a trade. A lot was offered and given to get him, but he’s got a real high ceiling. [Applause] Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Singy. That’s a start. Yeah, as soon as that ball got through, I could see down in the dugout players pumping their fists. They know that they got a chance in this ball game. Josh Bell will hit next. And that’s outside. [Music] Check swing and it’s popped off. Hauls it in. One away. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Now it’s the Nationals cleaned up hitter Dalen Lyle. Come on, let’s keep it going. [Applause] Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Snags it on the run. Two away now. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Last chance for the Nats in this one. Luis Garcia now at the plate as the Nationals are down to their final out. Just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Next offering is down low. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. With the tying run at the plate there, the home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] This could end it. And a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. Well, we saw a lot of good pitching and defense in this ball game. When you have a lowscoring game, it’s imperative that the players stay on their toes, ready to make plays behind their pitcher. And they did exactly that. It’s an excellent win. Everyone goes in the clubhouse feeling really good about themselves. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
