After eight top-10 finishes, including two runners-up, Michael McGeady ended his wait for a 2025 victory on the PGA in Ireland Region by taking glory at the Westport Pro-Am.
The Letterkenny-based Derry native was one of the late starters on the day, and, beginning his round on the back nine, made five consecutive pars before reeling off three birdies in the final four holes on the nine to make the turn at -3.
Seven pars on the front side, along with a birdie on seven and a bogey on nine left the 47-year-old on three-under and all alone at the top of the leaderboard, one shot ahead of Portadown’s James McVicker and two clear of the four-man group of David Higgins of Waterville, Lough Erne’s Damian Mooney, Newlands’ Steven Quinlan and Jimmy Bolger of Kildare who share third place.
The win will see McGeady will move up to seventh place in the Elavon Order of Merit, overtaking Paul Eivers of Cahir Park and Lucan native Richard O’Donovan.
Simon Thornton of ST Golf continues to lead the way, but a T22 finish won’t see him increase his lead over Cormac Sharvin by much on a week where the Ardglass man, playing out of Elm Park, didn’t compete.
The Region moves on to The K Club for the Dillon Quirke K Club Pro-Am on Monday, as we enter the final stretch of the 2025 campaign.
