Ever wonder how the pros start their downswing so smoothly and powerfully? It all comes down to the hip and the grip working in perfect sync.
In this video, I’ll break down the 3 keys to starting your downswing like a Tour player:
1️⃣ How to use hand speed from the top to get your trail elbow in front of the body
2️⃣ Why the hip and grip fire together for maximum control and consistency
3️⃣ The “skip the rock” feel to lead with the elbow and shallow the club naturally
This is one of the most misunderstood moves in the swing. Learn how to start your downswing like a pro and instantly feel the difference in your ball striking.

So, when I say hip and grip, I’m here and I’m pairing these two together and I’m feeling the grip pull through as that hip opens up. You imagine that club’s in the metal washer and it just goes like this. There’s no dropping out of that, you know? It’s just here. Yeah. Just a beautiful day in sunny San Diego and I have my little brother Dante Fernado up here. What’s up, buddy? It’s good to see you, buddy. Love this guy. You mentored me and I love what you do and I love how you change a lot of your players lives and it’s more than just golf for you. you know, you teach him a lifestyle and and so like that I look up to. So learn a lot. He spent a lot of nights at the Poor Zach household. So we’ve had a lot of fun. I love this guy. Um love his family. We we we consider I consider this guy family. Um it’s Yeah, it’s been a fun journey. But you know, a lot of successful golf. I remember the days when you you you were back in here and we got you over here. Um and now what’s awesome is Dante’s teaching and we were just talking about how you’re about up to what 26 people a week now. Yeah, it’s awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Anyway, it’s funny. I watch your videos and I hear I hear I I hear it. I hear the rhetoric. I love it, man. Spread the word. Hip bump. Whoa. You just had a college player shoot a 61 the other day. Yeah. Yeah. Nick Davis shot at 61. It was awesome, man. You know, shout out to you, bro. Really good player. Yeah, it’s cool. It’s really cool. So, Dante’s here now. We’re working on his game. I think you’re really going to like what you see at the top of your swing here. Okay. Check my day. Yeah. Yeah, let’s take a look at this, guys. The old tendency was to drop way under the plane. And look at this thing. It’s crawling down that forearm now. Doesn’t get underneath. There we go. Yeah, dude. We’re doing better. We’re doing better. Do you notice how it gets on the forearm and rather than covering your hands and straight down the ball, it just gets a little under. That’s also hand speed. That’s getting a little stuck behind. Getting that right elbow more in front of your body keeps it trailing down. I don’t know if you have ever told you this one, but my dad used to always tell me, you know, Adam, when when you get the golf club here, he’d say, imagine that club’s in the metal washer and it just goes like this. There’s no dropping out of that, you know? It’s just here and Yeah. Right. So, watch what watch what that looks like from the perspective of the camera back there. You’re here and just goes right. That’s my hands continuing to swing the handle through the golf ball. It’s my right elbow continuing to skip the rock through impact. Okay. My body wants to just rotate to get there. But that makes sense. If I get stuck behind the rotation, I’m going to have to throw. Do you feel your hands go from the top, Adam? Because for me, when I feel hand speed, for some reason, it could be anatomical, I feel the want to go this way. Yeah. You know, I I think it’s important that you pair that up with the I call it hip and grip. Hip and grip, you know, and this is something that, you know, really is good for you because you needed more of this. Um, for a long time, it was what was going to help get the golf club in front of you. It wasn’t just you feeling your arm swing out this way. That was not it. It was it was much more of the direction that your lead hip was traveling. So, when I say hip and grip, I’m here and I’m pairing these two together. And I’m feeling the grip pull through as that hip opens up. And if you watch from this perspective, okay, watch that club. There’s going to be no drop to this golf club. Yeah, it’s right on. It’s on a very direct path to the golf ball, you know. So, just to give you an idea here, this is me feeling hip and grip. So, I’ll do a little I’m going to be here and I’m going to pair these two together and really feel that motion of the hip and the grip moving as one. Now, when we do this correctly, there’s a very direct path of the golf ball. The club face gets very stable. You’re connected, you know. So, here we go. I really feel my sternum and hands stay together in the back swing. And I really feel my lead hip and hands go together on the way through. See that? And that’s where that compression comes from, right there. Yeah. It’s a good feel. You know, that’s one thing you’ll see with my swing typically is that club just always crawls down that forearm. Dante’s very close. I mean, this is a huge difference from where we were. Don’t get me started. A huge difference, right? You were here and now it just kind of stays like right there and then gets a little save through impact. We want to be here. We wanted to see that thing just crawl straight down to the golf ball. So, a drill I was actually showing him, I’ll show you the drill first. I like this, you know. I like even getting there and getting that look, you know, to me that’s a really good feeling. And I you notice I’m hitting like a little two- yard cut when I do that. That’s a kind of a good feeling for you because why? The tendency is to want to save it, which closes the face down. So when I do that drill, typically the ball will always have a tiny little cut. That’s when I play my best when I play a little cut. Yeah, exactly. Really tough to overcook a cut. So here you go, Kev. I’m going to show I’ll show show the viewer a good little hip and grip action here and you’ll see that that that that’s just like a little baby fade out there. That’s me feeling like I’m really on top of it, which is better for Dante. Now, in terms of like like sequencing, do you feel your lower body still start and then everything go? I’m saying for me, not Yeah. You know, like do you want me to feel go then kind of everything or just all together? I’m glad. Yes. You’re asking good questions today. You know, this is I know that when we freeze frame somebody at the top, we see we see the hip start to go. Even myself, right? But you know what’s funny? As somebody who hits it all, right? And I know what I’m feeling to make what looks like is happening actually happen. And I am feeling my arms and hands move with it. You know what I mean? I And and sometimes, you know, it’s funny. I’ve had moments where I have to feel like my arms get ahead of my body. And I still look and my hips are still moving. Like I feel that with driver. Yeah. With driver, I feel like the hands get ahead. the hands staying more in front of your body allows you to continuously rotate. Whereas, if you rotate out ahead of your hands, you’re going to do one of three things in the down swing. You’re going to either stall out, stand up, or back up to allow your hands to flip the club and catch up. Okay. Yeah. Like that’s the feel I want on the course cuz that was the first where I felt like I exited left. I had this versus Awesome. That was that that was your best swing of the day right there. What you just did. That feel. Yes. Yes. Beautiful. Do you want to give a quick shout out to 167 RAW in Charleston, South Carolina? It was a restaurant that we um went out to and visited at Kiwa Island. We’re going to go back to Kiwa Island for another clinic in November. We’re going to announce that soon. 167 RAW is going to be doing the uh the host dinner for us. Unbelievable Oyster Bar. They sent me this awesome shirt. So, I wanted to give them a shout out. And uh Darren, one of the owners. Thank you so much, buddy. Good golfer. Remember at some pretty cool clubs out there. Uh we became buddies last time. And uh looking forward to getting back out there. Thank you for this. Love it. And this is just a reminder. I’m not saying you’re doing this by much at all, but you do want to make sure that you keep those hips a little bit more over your ankles. Sometimes you get a little bit of the sit back from I’ve always had just just stay a little bit more over the balls of your feet. That’ll that that’s one more thing by keep you on top of it. Exactly. Exactly. Cuz right if I’m too back then I’m going to want to 100% dude. Oh then 100%. You know when you’re sitting a little bit back here I see it all the time. Hips are back here. It’s so much harder to keep everything out in front of you. Everything wants to work around you and under. Would you want me to feel feet back, hips forward or just No, no, just just hips forward. You’re far enough hips forward. Exactly. That look good? That feels much better. Good. Does that feel better? Yeah. Now the way it feels on the balls of my feet. Yeah, it’s better. That’s why you trapped that one more, by the way. Yeah, definitely. I know it was a little bit draw there, but that was that was trapped. All I want right now is just compression. Well, that was Yeah, that was much more compressed. That ball went a lot farther, too. All I want right now is just where I can consistently make like compressing contact. Freeze right there, Dante, real quick. Just making sure that the hip joint behind the pockets in line with the ankles there. Okay. It’s perfect right there. That probably feels like So like this feels comfy. Yeah. So that would be Yeah, exactly. A little behind. Right. I like that with the club. I can kind of check it myself. That was a nice ball flight there. Yeah, definitely lower. We’ll see what happens is when you’re more on top of it. Yeah, that alone without even doing anything with your setup is bringing your ball flight like this. I love how yall always teach the same things and I still find myself coming back to these videos, like the “washer” downswing and chest pointing back as you fire your hands and hips… stay classy!
He asked the question I always struggle with… hips then arms, arms then hips, all at once…golf is hard. I do remember this though Porzac… break the glass, then everything goes. I hit it so well with the pump drill, then I BLOW IT when I go full swing.
The club sliding through the washer reminds me of an old swing training device my brother may have had back in the day (I think it might have been called the kallassy swing magic). For the hands hip downswing combo do we want to feel something like the left (lead) hip pulling back behind us where it feels like the left hip pulls backward from above the left knee and foot where the hip is moving above the heel, and the left hand/butt of the grip pulls down underneath our shoulders with the butt of the club hammering into a wall just ahead of our lead leg in some cases? Or is there another way you'd describe the sensation of the hands and hips moving on the downswing?
I love it,,,, keeper simple.
Even an 80-year-old man can do that.
👏👏👏👍💪💯
When are you gonna be in Charleston?
I finally found a Adam video that my brain doesn’t directly connect with.
Maybe this is a little too advanced for me
Great video adam, I really like the question about when to move the hands. I enjoy watching Milo Lines rotary swing concept and yours. What I like about Milo's rotary swing is that I don't really think about my arms/hands because they slingshot back at the ball due to the rotatation. But When i do look at my films, I do notice my hands/arms do get a tiny bit stuck. I guess the questions is when do you pull those hands/arms as they're being slingshotted across your chest?
This was a very good video.
Pros like 100% of tour pros start their downswing float loading or hingeing wrists/increasing lag. They tell they do this with proper sequencing but the float load to them is natural. 95% of rest of us cast at top and our first move decreasing wrist angle and unloading lag so y the time we get handso. Trail thigh the shaft is almost in line with arms where the PGA Pro the shaft is parallel with the ground. A good drill for this is to literally try to slam the shaft into your trail deltoid coming down from the top is your first move and practice this over and over and over again, so you get an exaggerating feeling of improving your lag or your wrist angle coming down you’re obviously not gonna do that when you really hit the ball but it’ll give you the feeling you need to actually make a float load move. Basically, we have to consciously change what comes naturally in a PGA pro to make it work in our swings until it does become natural. You need to be teaching this.
多謝您!这是單平面揮桿、比双平面易學一些?
Been doing a Kiawah family vacation for last 20 years. If you get a chance to go to the clinic I highly suggest it. Great place 🤌
hunter mahan release
I've tried the hip and grip before but I always felt like something was slightly off but this was so clearly explained, especially with the club trailing down the right arm. It made something click. As always, love the videos and will definitely make it out to one of the clinics one of these days!
How good is the Porzak content and his teaching.
What going on when my shots are struck well but “pulls” I feel like starting with arms causes this action across ball
yes
Have to get out and play the Charleston Muni next time! One of the coolest municipals in the country. Also thanks for helping me qualify for the state match play, you’re the best teacher on YouTube!
I really love this method of teaching the golf swing. I basically ruined my swing a couple of years ago by unnaturally trying to drop the club way below the swing plane. I am going to work on this.
No better instructor….period…
sternum and hands otw up, hip and grip otw down
6:03 having the arms and hands moving WITH the hips is such an underrated feel/swing thought. Very often I get too focused on swinging with the lower body that the arms gets left behind. Had a great range session today after watching this video. Thanks coach!
I
Leave my hands behind when my hips start the swing . I am trying to sync them up but when I apply the power my hips win the race
I have been drilling this move for a few hours a day and I’m hitting really pure shots. The hip bump helps my backswing and puts me in a good position for a downswing. Hip and grip and then let it rip. I had to drill it slow for a while because it felt a little foreign to me but now I check the video and it looks so fluid. Hitting the ball really good and way tighter.
Porzak you should do course vlogs, people would love it. subscribers would boost
Porzak seems like a cool MF
This is great for irons and really works but is it the same technique for the driver? ie pulling down and holding the angle with the driver or do you feel it more with the right shoulder?
The specific move im referring to is 2.24 mins in to the video. Is that the same move for the driver and even fairway woods?
I’m trying to improve my downswing. I watch your channel exclusively for lessons but I believe I have interpreted some of the information incorrectly. Does the lead hip have to open to initiate the downswing or, as this video seems to offer, move to open as the handle drives through? I have had difficulty trying to open my lead hip first but, as another of your videos has instructed, keeping my chest back seems to solve the what comes first issue. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your great videos.
Adam, I have been working really really hard on trying to get the club down the forearm in the downswing. I am a steep swinger. How do I go about getting an online lesson with you personally cuz I think you're the only one that can probably fix me. None of my local pros can and I'm tired of wasting my money
Adam, I consistently watch all your videos and my game has improved tremendously. I’m confused with the downswing / right elbow sequence. Do you hold the right hip back for a fraction of a sec or do you create enough “ space “ for the R elbow to pass in front ?
Explains a lot. As a former baseball player I’m used to the hips firing and the hands lagging behind. It seems they’re more in unison in golf.
Do you make the same hip and grip move with the driver?
Saw some of your other videos, now I’m confused! What about “the X factor “ and getting hip separation from hips firing first? Arms and hips fire first, chest stays back. Or am I misunderstanding something?
