The No. 23 Georgia men’s golf team wrapped up its season-opening tournament with a seventh-place finish at the Carmel Cup. In the six-count-five, 54-hole stroke play tournament, the Bulldogs shot 7-over in the first round, 1-over in round two and even in round three.
Three Bulldogs placed in the top 15 individually: Freshman JD Culbreth, sophomore Sungyeop Cho and senior Carter Loflin.
Culbreth highlighted the team’s weekend with a stellar final round of 4-under, filled with five birdies, which placed him in sixth place for the weekend at 6-under. In ninth for the weekend was Loflin, who shot 3-under in the final round and 5-under overall. Cho matched Culbreth’s 4-under final round, finishing at 15th and 1-under for the weekend.
Rounding out the Georgia roster for the tournament was junior Grayson Wood, who closed his weekend with a round-best 3-over to finish at 15-up for the season-opening event. Sophomore Matt Moloney handed in a card with an 8-over round on Sunday, finishing at 11-up, while sophomore James Earle had a tough final round, shooting 10-over and finished the tournament at 17-up.
No. 12 Vanderbilt won the prestigious Carmel Cup at 17-under, followed by top-ranked Oklahoma State at 14-under. Arkansas and Oklahoma tied for third, while TCU rounded out the top five. No. 15 Texas Tech, Georgia and Mississippi State rounded out the field at Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.
The Bulldogs will continue their fall schedule with the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas (Sept. 29-30), the Hamptons Intercollegiate in East Hampton, New York (Oct. 6-7), Fallen Oaks Collegiate in Saucier, Mississippi (Oct. 18-20) and the Ka’anapali Classic in Maui, Hawaii (Oct. 25-28).
