If you’re looking for some fun exercise and you enjoy competition, you might want to consider disc golf. The popularity of the game has been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s like golf, but with no clubs.

“The difference is you’re the mechanism. You’re the tool. Your arm is the lever that throws a disc,” Course Supervisor of CNY Disc Golf Eric Trippany said.

Instead you have different types of frisbees to play different parts of the game.

“There are three, so this is a putter, that’s for closer shots, there is a mid-range for mid-range shots and then you have a driver, so it’s just like golf,” Riley Jensen, who plays disc golf, said.

Riley Jensen and his father Chris don’t see each other often, because they live far apart. But when they’re together, disc golf is one of their favorite things to do.

“Last fall, he wanted me to come and play and I was like ugh, I just don’t want to. Then this year I thought yeah why not I’ll give it a try,” Chris Jensen said.

When Chris first started playing, he got hooked right away.

“It’s literally like a walk in the park, but you have a little bit of a challenge,” he said.

Chris said at his age he couldn’t get into regular golf, but disc golf was right up his alley.

“It’s dead simple to do. It’s easy, it’s cheap and the beautiful thing about it is most of the courses are free,” he said.

They go out to disc golf courses across North America and play together. They don’t always play at a course though.

“My dad and I, we play frisbee in the street when I’m home with just a normal frisbee practicing like that,” Riley said.

With every throw through the trees, the Jensens are building more than skill, they’re building a bond that’s hard to break.

“One of the nice things about it is just spending time together,” Chris said.

They do get a bit competitive while playing, but in the end it’s not the score that matters.

“The conversation goes free and you are spending great time with people whether it’s friend groups or yourself or your family. It’s really enjoyable,” Chris said.
