Can I Break Par At This Hidden Gem!?!
This is Southern S Golf Course located in the southwest region of Scotland overlooked by the mountain range of Cumbria. It’s a golf course I’ve heard a lot about and I’ve always wanted to play. It’s a testing links with coastal views, fast greens, and deep bunkers. And today we’re going to head out there in the challenging conditions and see if we can break par. Right. So, we’re down at the first tea. Now, I am super excited about playing this golf course, tell you a little bit about it as we go around, but for you to know, past 69, it is a course rating of 73.3 as we go around. So, we’ll flash some score guides up over the drone now for what I’m trying to do. The way I’m playing at the minute, I’d be quite happy with level, but not knowing the course, maybe one, two over will be good. Um 6,79 yards off the back te’s. Par four to start. Gentle one 393. We have got the normal wind which is off the west. So it’s a left to right wind today. A slight dog leg left to right here. Straight down at those white signs and see what we can do. Wish me well. Looks comment down below what you uh what you think we’re going to shoot. Um and have you ever been in this area? Of course we filmed recently. Sllith is literally over the clubhouse, eight minutes away in a helicopter as we were told. It’s not too far as the crow flies, but it’s an hour and a half drive. Let’s see what we can do today, though. Wish me luck. Right, here we go. I’m so excited to play this golf course. This has been on the list for a long time. Let’s go watch this ball fly into the mountain. The tracer will slightly ruin it, but pure golf for me. Pure golf. Little bit down the left right next to the 150 pole. That’ll do. That’ll do in a stiff test. So, we’ll see. Let’s go, boys. Let’s go. So, I’ve just bought a ball mark in the club. Now, look at the design of that. So, you’ve got the hills here because over in the distance, we’ve got the hills over in the Lake District. Can’t remember the name of this one. Crag Hill, was it? Something like that. You’ve got the ocean. But then, watch this. When you put it up now, you see the blue sky through the middle. That’s why it’s designed like that. Pretty cool, isn’t it? Pretty cool. Right, we’ve only got 146 to the front here. I’m excited. The pin looks left. Um, Silith that we filmed at literally a week ago or two weeks ago is only just down the road or across the bay as it would be, but it’s a very different golf course. A lot of blind golf shots there and a lot of undulating golf shots as where here that is 173 into a a stiff little wind. Going to play a sixiron. Everything is very flat here. You’re going to be more exposed to the wind, but you’ll see a lot of what’s in front of you, which is a good thing, I guess. I’m just going to go straight at the middle here, get my first par under my belt, and move on. Dance floor. Dance floor. I’m on it. I can’t quite hear the music, but we’re on it, which is what we want. Two putts. Run away. This is a lag it up, runaway putt. Not much going on here. The greens look quite large to be fair for this length of golf course. some good revetted bunkers. I’ll tell you a little bit about the bunkers. We’ve been lucky that Andrew, one of the uh the director of golf, shown us some big plans that they’ve got coming and we’ll show you something later on in the video. But for now, I will roll this 45 footer up and run away. He could roll it in. He could roll it in. He could roll He couldn’t roll it in. Just come come here in a second. Just watch me tap in and come and look at this detail. Just look at this here. Get get in close, Joe. Look at that. That’s a sign of class. That little Southern S logo on the uh on the cup. What a golf course. Good flag game. Great logo. Great life. Southern S. Send me a membership form. So, our second hole, 457. This is one of eight par fours today that plays over 400 yards. The average score from Shot Scope as well is 4.9 on the um par fours. They are very tough. There’s only I think four of them under the 400 mark. There’s five par 3es and only two um two par fives. So going to have to drive it well. I think today is going to be a big key. But little dog leg right to left this one. Slightly into and across the wind. Aim down the middle. Trust Damian. [Music] It’s right out the bottom of the club, but it’s straight. That feels like I’ve got a long way to go there. That feels like I might have over 230 yards even though it stayed down below the wind. Right, then let’s get grafting. short game is going to have to be a I think a key component of today’s challenge as well. That is a heck of a way. I think I might well I think I’m definitely pulling a cover off it. Can’t be right. Wow. 221 yards. I think I might actually have to wait four. So 220. That drive’s gone 210 into the wind. Wasn’t my best stroke. 203 to the front. It’s not much trouble. What’s it lying like? 240 back. I don’t think I can get 31 over the back. Only 29% of shot scope users hit the green in regulation. I can see why that’s on the whole course. That’s overall, not just this green. But I think it’s one of them. The wind will just play such a huge factor. If you hit a poor drive, then you’re all of a sudden chasing. So, see what we can do here. I think we’re going to have to rely on an up and down potentially. But if I get a good one, I could bumble it on. Miss that trap, please. Soft, soft, soft greenside trap. To be fair, it was a strange little lie that I actually caught like the little bank in front. Couldn’t quite get it up to get the cut, but greenside traps, not too bad. It’s not the end of the world. Get some up and downy going. Nicely raveted bunker. Good news here is I’ve got loads of room to work with. So, it sort of splash it halfway and just let it trundle on up. Just hit another stone there. That was a shame. I just clattered a stone there and it’s made big mark on me fish and sent it out further than I wanted. Oh well, some work to be done. Jeremiah. Going to put this cuz it’s not too bad from here. Straighten, straighten, straighten. Thank you. All day, every day. It always looked like a four. Always looked like a four. See, I think it’s the new attitude, you know. Got a little bit unlucky there catching a stone, but it’s not the end of the world. Just see if you can hold your next one. Move on. Be humble. Have some humility. Don’t get angry at you. Enjoy the job that you have been presented with. Onto the next. Another huge par four into the wind. What have we got here? So 460. There’s some trees off the uh off back. I can see the 150s there. So that’s 150. That’s 210 to those in this wind. The greens actually pretty much over the middle of this little bush as we go through. So I think stay right of them. Don’t let it uh get swirled off into this long heather. It’s 460 462. Wow. Off the back here. Can’t wait to turn down. Now it’s interesting. This the golf course used to be a traditional lynx. They don’t class themselves as the traditional links anymore because what is now the 14th hole used to be the first hole. So you would play nine straight down and pretty much when you get out to this point now you would then start to turn around and head back down. So you’d have nine uh nine out and nine in as where the clubhouse was located a little bit differently. So now you play sort of nine going out around it and in your loop back around for another nine. There are some other holes that are being added which we will show you later in the video that look insane. But now the matter of hand driver commit to it cuz you can’t really see the fairway. Now let’s make another jammy path. [Music] I think that’s good. I can see the other 150. And I think I saw it bounce by it. So yeah, wasn’t the draw I intended. Oh gosh, there’s a hole there. But I think actually into the wind that’s going to be pretty decent. It plays almost straightish from the other TE’s, which is like 50 yards up here. But that was struck and drawing, so we shall see. Cutting it fine here. I thought I was about 20 yards right. I didn’t realize how much it could I think I might have the wrong club here. That’s a tad optimistic for let’s get a six iron instead of a five. 200 y to go. The case there’s two big pot bunkers down the right and then nothing really. Well, there’s a third one actually I’ve just noticed. So, we got to get over those. The flag’s actually on the corner in line with me here, but I’ve got to hit out towards the bunch of trees there to make sure I not only cover the roof, but that I uh let the wind take it from where it is. So, we shall see. Sit from one rough to another rough. Left to right. Let’s go. Left to right. At least it came out of there. That was brutal. Poor drive was the reason for that one. 78 yards. I want this to come out low cuz it’s windy. Someone put a comment actually the other day. Do you just enjoy playing in wind? Yes. I love Lynx golf. I don’t care if I get beat up. Right, 78. Try and land this to sort of 75 with a lower nippier flight. Try and just play a bit right to let the wind not have too much effect on it. That’s it. Just got it a little skinny. Just trying to keep it low, but we’ve given ourselves a chance. So, it’s not the end of the world. We can keep going. That is a great golf hole, especially off that back T470 into the wind. That is a proper hole. Three pot bunkers there. This big green. Pitched it right on the number here. 78. Just a bit too far. I’ve got to accept that there’s going to be a few bogeies today, I think. can then got to take take your chances where you can on the shorter fours and the shorter fives. It’s just these ones that are into wind. Tell you what, if I would have hit it, it would have gone in. Yes, I’ll take that. Poor drive meant I couldn’t get there in two. Wedge should have been a little bit better, but five not the be not the worst result at the end of the day. This will give you a good idea of how the strong the wind is. This fourth hole here is 166 on the uh on the stick. It’s 168 to play and I’ve got a four iron out straight into off the right a little bit. Pins nicely in the middle. So, it’s a case of just get it on the green here of this first par three. Good swing. Little cut to hold it. And we’re we’re a-ok. Okay. Let’s see. What a backdrop as well. Wow. What a backdrop. Oh no. I’ve got underneath that. It’s my bad swing at the minute. Perfectly pin high but leaked. Little pushy. Got to feel a bit more here. Queser. What a view though. Can’t get too displeased when you’ve got that as a view. Tell you what, I’m on with my distances. I’m perfectly pin eye. I was just 25 yards offline. Look at the coes out there in the distance. What a view. That is incredible. Just going to pop this up with my 54. We’re on an ups slope and then we’ve got a bit of green to work with. So, if I can just land it near the front edge, it will just run out towards the flag. Nothing dangerous as well. 58 under hit it. or get too high in the air, the wind could have a adverse effect. Landed that about five feet more than I wanted. Just trying to hit this little shaded bit there and just went over it. Tough little put for par. But what I’m getting happier with now is my chips. I’m a bit more confident with that there. I was actually thinking about holding it instead of duffing it, which has been the mentality of late. So even though it’s run 10T by, still pretty happy. Stay. Oh, just didn’t give it enough outside the hole. Well, back to back bogeies. Two poor T-shots. That one with the driver and that with the four iron. But luckily, one of the two par fives is now and we can see what we can get from there. So, the fifth hole, 532 yards. The first of two par fives. this an 18 or a par five. One of the easier holes. One in eight people actually walk away with a birdie here according to Shot Scope. And only 1% of golf balls are lost down this hole. You would think that makes it the easiest hole. Not the case. 18. But there is a bunker out there. That’s 207. I think if we just have a little peek. See? Oh, back. Yeah. Oh, 237. There is a burn out there. It’s only 3 30 32 and I think down the wind is pumping today. If I can get a good loose lips, fast swing. I just made a bogey swing going down the last probably a 320 drive. I would say carry minimum pure carry down and off the right. And also it’s down the left that and I’m going to be cutting it. So we’re going to be we’re going to be well away here. Oh my god, that one hurt my back. You got a twig sticking out your cap. Twig out my c. That’s where I put it down when we found the ball. Right, then we found it. Do you know what? I’ve picked my cap up and walked away from where we were. Oh, here it is. There she is. Not the worst. Not the best. Luckily, we didn’t make the 106 club up. We’ve got 200 to the middle, but our friend P is coming out. If I can just hack this back up to near sort of left, I can chip across to the green then. So, we shall see. Those shots feel like they drain like 10% of your energy. It’s just so thick. I think I need a Red Bull or something after that. Lucky to find it, but criy. To be fair, we did find six other golf balls in here. So, if you’re ever in need of uh golf balls and you’re playing Southern Ash, just have a little walk down the right hand side of the fifth and you’ll come up a flurry of eggs. All right, flag is 78 yards and it’s going to be a couple uphill. 78. That’s the shot with the 54. Left arm to chest go 75. How far is that flag going to be on? Cuz it’s 62. Okay, wind off the left and slightly down. Just got to commit to my turn has been my mis hit with these. So here, here. Hit a good one in. Could hold it for an eagle. Who knows? Feeling that confident with the wedges nowadays. Amazing how you can change spent got the right distance. It was just very hard to get it going left enough on that wind. Tried hitting like a little drawy feeling one. But good news is we got about a 20 footer for birdie. So after that terrible drive, we’ve been very fortunate folks. Right. So, we are driving up to the fifth green now on a huge slant. Um, first impressions, I am absolutely blown away by this golf course. It’s a proper test of golf. The um condition is unbelievable. It’s only £100. Say only £100. I know that to some people might be expensive, but for the actual quality of the golf course, I think it’s in the top 100 uh value for value for money courses, it sits at 21. So, you know that you’re getting a lot for your book there. So yeah, five holes in truly spectacular. And I think when we get round to like the stretch of 10 to 14, yeah, is going to be um very very spectacular. So battle down. Hold this there birdie and keep going. Tiniest bit of right to left. Come on. I did pull that. I did pull it. Well, five. Not a disaster after that sprayed tea shot. Good old hole, but I feel like I’ve really let one go because it was a par five under 500 yards downwind. Should have maybe been a bit more strategical off the tea and just placed it in. Hit it like 250 and I would have only been going in with probably four or five iron there, but got driver greedy. I got greedy. But we carry on. Doesn’t matter when you’re having fun. 46 yds as we stare back at the hills of Cumbria and we look out into the distance there. The fairway runs out at 306 which given the wind sort of on this direction don’t think is an issue for us today. If we can get it in play. Get this driver going. It’s been my stall water of late but just a little bit squiffy. It’s not quite turned through the last few. We can get it in play and wedge on. Come on. Come on. There we go. That’s more like it. Little bit out of the bottom, but perfectly straight down the middle. And it’ll do. We’re in play. We are in play. Right. Fairway found. Now we got 140 to the flag. There’s one bunker to contend with on the right and it looks like everything’s falling a little bit towards it. Luckily the flag looks like it’s on the left portion of the green. So it’s a case of play up the right. See if the wind brings it in. The wind sort of into and off the right. 140. 140. 122 front. 22 is probably playing 145 with this wind. I think I’m going to chip an eight. Go sort of smaller stance. 9:00 arm swing and punch it up the right and it should fall back in then. All being well. Get might have just gone out. That wind was so strong. That started out on the right edge of the green. I probably turned the face ever so slightly and it went a little bit on the wind, but it pitched on the green and I think it’s gone off. I needed to almost hit a flatter cut there. Maybe even with seven iron to take spin off it, but hey, we’re up there. Let’s see. See what we can do. Well, we pitched up near pin high. I didn’t even think I’d actually pitch this far. There it is. Is that it? Pitch somewhere around here. And it’s just trickled past the hole. And you can see, as we said earlier, 29% of green. Oh, there’s the pitch mark. Actually, I know you can’t do this in competition, but we’re all about keeping the courses good. Just on the fringe, that looks like my carpet. So, not the end of the world, but it’s the way with Lynx golf when you find out you’re not just, let’s say, your 7 goes 150, you’re not just going to be hitting at 150. That was a 165 club for me that we were playing at 140 and I’ve only just got it by and I moved it from right edge to left edge without really hitting a draw. So, it’s all about controlling that ball flight. Let’s see if we can cozy this up though and escape with a par. Go on. I tell you what, I thought it had chances. I thought it did. I thought it did. We’ll take a par. Two soft bogeies we’ve had thus far, but at the moment, we’re doing okay in this wind. Right, we’ve got on to the seventh hole. Now, this one, one in four people hit the green when playing this hole. It’s a par three, 207 yds, and actually over half the field make a bogey when playing this hole. It’s an interesting one cuz it doesn’t look like there’s a lot to it, but there’s a a sort of little bit of dead ground that you can’t see. The front of it 203 today and it’s 206, so it’s not far on, but the wind is sort of howling down and across. You could maybe bounce it on. This is a weird one cuz what what do you do here? Wind’s going to You could hook it on the wind or you could play against it to hold it. Long doesn’t look too bad and it’s 240 to get back there. I’m going to cut a five iron at it. Let’s see if I can uh bolster the one in four stats or just a slanty push swing. Just hit a few little slidy shots today. Not quite my loosest. Not sure where that’s ended up. Hopefully, it’s scampered past the bunker. Actually, it might not be the worst thing being in the bunker cuz it’ll come out softer and I’m going to be chipping down wind. I’m definitely adding to the 29% stack group here. It’s actually sat nicely, but possibly the worst place to miss it because we are straight downwind with this bunker to come over, then onto an up slope, and then all down from here. So, I’ve got to pitch this like here and just let it dribble over the top. I might even try and pitch it here. You know, this will test the old short game. This will test it. I got the spin but pushed it. Need to hit some greens or else we will drop shots dramatically around here. It seems we will drop shots dramatically. Wasn’t actually a bad shot that, but it’s probably got an extra five or six feet because of the wind. Nothing a good putts can’t sort out though. Look at that beach there. Tide’s gone out. That was in when we got here. Literally right up to the to the wall of the course there. I got the pace, but I pulled the package off it. Gosh. Actually got blown back then as I took the butcher away. Criy. Well, do you know what I think the issue there was? I was thinking of trying to get it close from 205 when really I should have just hit it to the heart of the green. Two puts. Thank you. Instead of trying to think I’m playing like Scottish Sheffller. We move on though. We move on. A few drop shots. Silly drop ones. But we’re going to go down the wind, I think, a bit now. You go like nine. I think nine and 10 are pretty much down at the shorter par fours. So, we can maybe salvage something over the next few. That would be nice. Right. 372 yards. The eighth hole. Some bunkers at 325 from these TE’s potentially in play today, but I’ve I’ve not drove it the longest. Been a little bit out the bottom. One poor one. So, I’m just going to peg it down to make sure I get the sort of straighter flight. And wind is going a little bit left of them as well. So, all being well, we don’t hit them. Just get driver down, wedge it up, tap it in. That’s my plan. Don’t over complicate it here. That could get on the green. It’s up there. It’s huge. The uh the guys in front, one one’s a member at Sllith. watched the video last week. Shout out. Thank you for coming to say hello. They’ve just turned and stopped to look back. The other chapter member here. Very nice chaps. Well, we avoided the traps and we’re only 15 short of the front. I needed the ball to be a couple of yards this way and I had a straighter shot. But it’s not the end of the world. I can fly it into the slope and let it bumble on. Luckily, the wind’s going straight down as well, so that’ll push it back towards the flag. I’ve just got to make sure I don’t get clumsy and chip it in the bunker. Sit. Sit. Wow. Look at the wind take that. I actually thought that was played pretty well. It wasn’t my cleanest of strikes, but I was thinking when it had its first bounce, it was a yard right of where I wanted it to be. And I thought we would have had three foot, but the wind’s just a cruel mistress today. Good hold that because those bunkers are so well placed. You can just see the backs of them there. Obviously downwind for me, they were in reach, but managed to get around him. And now we’ve got a little tiny left to right. Wind might have a a little dabble with it, but should be able to knock this in all being well. Come on. Yay. He gets one back. He gets one back. The fans have gone wild on the tea. It’s what we like to see at Southern S. Right, that’s one of me terrible mistakes accounted for. Just need to account for two more and make no more. So the ninth you actually stand not too far away from the clubhouse, but because of this field here. This is a farmer’s field that stretches for quite a big stretch of land here. It’s same plot of land owned by the same um family or whoever owned the actual land for the club, but it’s rented out to another farm here and there’s no chance of touching it. But you could get like you could get another nine hole like par three course, a putting green course like a cradle sort of type thing in there because you actually play all the way around it. So, we’ve gone from over the clubhouse, come down the stretch here out to the coast, and now we’ve come back here to the ninth, and then the next nine goes on the other side of the clubhouse. And that’s where when we get to about 13 and 14, they’ve got plans for new holes, and we’ll throw some drone footage up of them. You’ll see. They look truly incredible. Um, going to stretch a little bit more land out of it, change the the sort of amount of par 3es and fives that they have. But so far, nine holes in, this is a brilliant golf course. Absolutely brilliant. This one, the ninth, 471 yards, a dog leg from right to left. Sort of blind here off the back, too. You can see some of the fairway that we’re going to land onto. Just got to commit to pick him a line and and go down it. That seems to be my drive today. Slightly out the bottom, but pretty straight. Oh, it’s just run through the fairway, but it shouldn’t be too too dangerous there. Should be okay. Right in line with the 150. Not the worst in the world. The flag is 174 yards. It’s saying that is a long gold way. 169. Sorry, I got 169 and it’s straight down wind out of the rough 169 out of the rough front’s only 148. I think I’m going to hit pitching wedge here cuz I think that is a flyer lie. So 140 for 150. Couple of bounces you get. Don’t want to be greedy and take a nine out of it. It sort of sat down, but not. I think this gets us bouncing up to the flag. Oh no, it’s hefty rough. That That was like hitting into a a bucket of cement. It just stopped the club. It didn’t get any sort of fly. It just stopped. Wow. Luckily, I’ve got a back stop behind this uh this flag, so it could go up and come back down. I’ve got 22 to the front. Use that slope. May as well. Come on. Shame the greens aren’t like a foot faster there. The only thing was that the wind was pushing that up the slope, so it was going to harm it coming back down. Wasn’t a bad pitch to be fair cuz it was out the roof and straight down the wind. Just a shame about that wedge out the rough. I thought that was going to come out like a rocket, but that heather is tangly stuff. You can see why not many greens are hit. If you’re in there, you you’re doing well to get it chasing up. Oh my god. Well, I thought I had that. I thought I had that. That was a little bit of a cruel on knocking back on the tea. I did push my drive by about five yards and it ran through. You could have hit threewood there. That’s the thing with these sort of rounds. All the in the reds that we play, it’s generally the first time I played the golf course. So, hindsight would be a great thing. Three over through nine with two I would say soft bogeies. Should have up and down it on the par three and a soft bogey there just running through the fairway. But chipping needs to be better. to make sure we get them. But nevertheless, I’m still enjoying myself. It’s absolutely fantastic. And I think the back nine, we’re going to be in for a real treat. Let’s see if we can get where we’re going. To be fair, we’re not far away of a top five at the moment. We’re currently trending towards that. So, let’s keep it going. 160. Our 10th hole. There must be 160 n iron. The fronts 136. This is an interesting sort of yardage. Wow. Look, if you spin round now, you can see the the um tide has gone out. There’s the coes down there in the distance going all the way around the coast there. Back up to Scotland when you come back in back up to Trune way. Then we’ve got Cumbria over there in the distance. What a what a spot, ladies and gentlemen. Right. Anyway, come on. Let’s hit a good shot here. Let’s Let’s just play middle of the green. Wind’s down and it’s one 160 to the flag. I’m just going to hit a little nine iron. Winds down and off the left. Play a little left of it and let the wind take it. Oh, leave it wind. Leave it. We’re dancing. Just maybe gone off. I tell you what, I was sort of unsure. I was like, could I bash a wedge or should I just let a nine get there? Not the end of the world if we’re big. So hard to stop it on link screens downwind. Maybe when you thin it, that doesn’t help. But my aim, I think a new target for me is to hit seven. No, six of the greens coming in. Six. And then we’ve put a good score in that way. Tell you what, it’s actually sat that nice and the fringes are that good here. No point popping it up in the air in the wind having a little dabble with it. We’ll just get the old blade out and get it running. up over the fringe and it wants to work left about three foot right and let it run in. We’ll take that tapping range. El tapio tap tap. [Music] Right. I can’t get it. I’m stuck. Well, a little par. Oh, look at this for a golf hole around the next. Oh, yes. Sign me up. Sign me up, Scotty. I’m in. This is where it’s going to get good. This is where it’s going to get good. Well, 11th hole is 392 heading straight back towards Cumbria. Probably actually where we’re stood, you’re sort of in a good straight flight to um Sllith this way. It’s actually only 5 miles across the bay as you as you go, but it’s an hour and a half all the way around to get back to it. This hole though, 392 yards. There is a brook that runs um across the fairway that’s about 350. So, I’m going to hit uh 3-wood because we are downwind and I don’t want to bounce a driver in there on these fast and firm fairways. So, 3-wood down the middle and then try and pick a few up coming in now down this wind. Good straight kick should be good. Oh, wow. Did you see that? That was on the fairway, wasn’t it? That looked That appeared like 100 yards further than I thought it would be. If I’m in the brook, heads will roll. What a golf course. I’m proper enjoying this. I’ve always wanted to play here. Didn’t know too much about sort of heard of it. The club that you’d heard of, but you knew nothing of. It’s living up to its uh its mystique so far. 91 yards. Oh, 91 68 front. Bit of a slope behind it. I think this stinks of a 58 shot to try and maximize spin. My yardages have rubbed off 70 on a on a elbow swing. Shoulder swing. even shoulder swing downwind out of the rough creeps two yards onto the front edge and then it’s all well and good. We’re just tapping in if not hauling out. Just got to commit here. Here be the right yardage. I’ve actually stopped it too quick down the wind. I think I’ve pitched that literally a yard on it. needed to. I was expecting a bit more fly out of it, but hey, you know what? It was a good shot. I can’t control the wind. If I allow for and it doesn’t help me. We just got to get on with it and hold a bit of a longer put. It’s not the end of the world, folks. You want to think about your mentality. Be happy and positive on the course like me has been so many times for so many years. Actually see where mine’s pitched here, I think. Yeah, I’ve literally got it on there. Yeah. So, I did pitch it 70. Just just struck it too well. Just allowed for a mediocre douff that I normally hit. There’s a hole down here. I think it’s the next one. If you look out, you can see the two bunkers. It looks incredible. I think that’s the next hole we’re playing. These are the the good stretch. the 11th, 12th, and 13th. I think this here across this way, you can actually see the new green. That’s going to be the 14th green as you play in. But that’s a hole that’s yet to be done. I think it’s 2028. They were saying that the the renovations will be done, which I tell you what, when they’re done, I will be straight back here. Straight back here. Right. Come on. Let’s just drop this little mouse in. Good pace. Good pace. Just didn’t get it high enough up the hole, but it’s a four. We’ll take that. We’ll take that. regret my putter the other day and I’ve think I’ve got half the world’s glue on there. Not great. 12 holes 424 yards and I am buzzing for this stretch of golf. Cumbria in the distance over there. We’re heading straight out to the ocean. It’s a big dog leg left to right. There’s some bunkers out in the distance at 245 yards. So, I’m going to just go straight at them cuz the wind is going off the right. So, it’ll just get over them and fall into the fairway all being well. See if we can keep battling and just try and get this driver a little bit higher. Just peg it up ever so slightly. Same swing and I should should nut it. Even though I’ve turned it on the wind by the signpost softly, softly, softly. Should just be okay. It was a couple of bounces in the fairway. Should have pegged that lower and hit it out the bottom again. It goes straighter. Couple of bounces though in between the two posts. What would we run out then on that line? White signpost 300 should be okay. You can actually put your hand underneath that golf ball. That’s a mad mad lie. Right then, this isn’t doing anything to help the greens hit run. 143 back into the wind. Luckily though, 125 front. How the heck is that going to come out of there? The good news is I’ve got enough room here to not hit this, I think. Look at that for a view. Heading straight back out towards the big river. And uh almost an infinity light green. Oh yeah, this is going to be interesting. I’m only going to land it sort of one 120. Just go a little bit right of it as well. That was nuts. Came out like sort of with no spin but drawing. I’m not sure where that’s gone. It was at the left edge of the green, so it should be okay. Didn’t look like it could run too far. It was diving the whole time it was in flight. Short game needed. Six of eight needed. We’ve got one thus far. Incredible that. We’ve uh we’ve just run off the back of the green here into a snorkely little lie. How do you even play a shot like this? It’s just sort of a big clump here that I’ve got to obviously get through to get to the golf ball. So then can’t really strike it. Just got to ball outside the back of the stance and chop down I think and hope it pops forwards. Hopefully this comes out and hits this front little hill and uh just trundles up. Yeah, it was so thick behind the ball there. I had no hope. And then I follow it up with a bad one. Oh, that’s a bit unfortunate because it wasn’t a bad shot in. Should have in hindsight gone back from a 54 on the second chip, but just wanted to hit it right. Wind’s got it. Well, that’s a tough six to take that cuz the drive wasn’t too bad. Lie was funky and then that lie was bad. The second chip was obviously my fault, but didn’t want a six. So, the 13th statistically the hardest hole here at um Southern S. It’s actually plays one over its par. So, it’s pretty much a par five. And interestingly, it’s one of the holes that is going. You can from here nearly see the new green. You’ll see it up on the drone shot. But uh it’s going to be a little different. And then there’ll be the new T for 14 behind this green and that’ll be coming back up into the corner, but we need to uh buckle up and hit a good T- shot after that little double that we’ve just had. Luckily, the wind’s off the left, so aim down there and let it rip. Come on. Bit of a toe, but it’s worked against the wind. It’ll do. It’ll do, donkey. Right. 187 157 front. I’m thinking that is straight down wind. 157 front. If I get a good n ir It looks a bit jumpy, this fringe lie here. And then we can get this bouncing up. See the old Southern S lighthouse at the back of the green here, which is the the club logo. The new green is literally just here to our right. Oh, that was a terrible golf swing. But great shot, Matt. fell out. I think that happened for a reason. I think I had too much club, so I fatted it to the front and now we’re got a 20 footer for for birdie. Back on the birdie trail. One would hope. Yeah, you can see the the new green here. It’ll be softer par four playing short. And then actually the T for 14’s behind it. And this is here. If you just span round, you can actually see the 14th fairway, which then becomes a longer par five, a three shot par five. So, some impressive changes to come. This green that we’re on now, because of all the changes, what they will then gain because of the holes that they lose the next, this one, it becomes a short game green, this one. So they’d rebuild a little bit of the area and then where the next tea is, which is basically over our shoulders, they gain even more of a practice ground and put a big teaing area in there. So should be some very impressive changes that come in the uh in the future from here cuz it’s a club that I think is already awesome. Absolutely loving it here. Stay up. I feel like we need to pick a few up quickly, but we’re going back into the wind now, which isn’t going to be any fun for anyone. So, our 14th, 456 yards. Shot scope users card the most triple bogeies on the golf course here. There is OB right if you you sort of flare one but you’re straight back now generally into the prevailing wind sort of into off the left and four five six you can see why some big numbers would start to come in only 20% of the time the greens hit in regulation as well. So if we can get a par here we might we might be cooking. I think the first bunker is like 350. Yeah, 364. So, let’s uh let’s try and get a good drive. That’s the key to par here cuz my scrambling’s been poop. Come on, wind. There was two bounces down the left. I think it’s just in the semi. I pegged it low and tried keeping it left thinking the wind would just harm it at the end, but it went dead straight. Should have listened to Damian and aimed down the middle. Well, we are currently I think I think I’m five over now. Seven over is top 10. If we don’t do that, we’ll putting £10 into the pot for uh for the charity donation. I think that’s up to about 40 50 pounds at the moment. So, I would like to think I’ve got enough in to get back to or creep over at at uh a top 10 because we’re inside at the moment. We’re actually only one stroke away from a top 10 top five. If I could somehow birdie three of the holes coming in, we’d be very close to the wind score. So, a few sloppy little errors. Few I don’t think I’ve drove it as well as I could. Definitely not chipped it as well as I could, but we’re not we’re not a million miles away yet. So, keep going. Few holes to go now. Push on for the last few and see what we can do. Oh, no. That was a silly shot. That was trying to bite too much off there. And now we are back in it. Just grabs the club and turns it 85 into the wind to the middle. Take a bit more loft so I can open it. And then I can anticipate the flip. Please kick at it. Please go in. I thought that had gone in then because we didn’t see it for a few minutes. This could be a worldly part. That was just pure hidden hope there. I just don’t know what it’s going to do. That stuff is so tangly. Soon as the club gets in and if it gets any contact on the huzzle, the face just shuts. So, actually took a 50 and opened it up. Anticipating that then. And it pretty much did what I thought it would do. Flag out, drain him in up the hill. You can see here just behind us, that’s where the new 14th green’s going to be. Quite swely the run up to it there. If you think all the way back down there in the corner near that house, that’s where the tea is. One heck of a par five that will be. But anyway, back to the matter of hand. We’ve got 10 ft up the hill. just wants to nudge left to right. Can we make a great fall? [Laughter] That is just that sums golf up that hit a good drive. Just pulled it a tiny bit. Hacked a hybrid wedge. Just sort of hit and hope allow for that little flip and then hold a good putt. Say size four on the score card. But does everyone doesn’t know the torture that I went through in here to get that four 203 ys four iron in hand winds. Is it into off the right? Yeah, it’s in two. Let’s just 183 to the front. I’m just going to play for middle of the green here. I’m going to use strategy. We escaped with bogey par down the last even. We escaped with it. to now. Let’s just ride the coattails home of lady look and just let’s not be too brave. Let’s not be too stupid. That is a golf shot. We’re on the green. Started at the middle. It cut the wind absolutely humped it and it’s on the left edge of the green. It’s probably the best shot I’ve hit today. That I’m actually a little bit out of breath. I’m that excited. Let’s go. Right. Well, we’ve hit the most professional shot we could have hit there. We hit a very professional shot. It’s actually stopped rather quickly. It’s probably because of how professional the strike was. And now we have a crosswind slider on the humps here. This would be a lovely two if we could somehow sneak one here. But all I’m thinking is two putts. I’m going to get in the house. I’m going to get in the house at a respectable score. It’s got to travel. It’s got to travel and it’s in. So windy down that line. And then it’s just hard to actually give it its full full commitment. But it’s a three. I will take that. They are no SL. I don’t think there’s been a par three where it’s been particularly easy yet. They’ve all been serious distance. So three there on that one will take all day. 430 is the 16th hole. Straight into wind. It’s about 35 mph now the wind and we’re going straight into it. So driver and then pump of four iron [Music] that is down the middle low. It’s gone about 220 into the wind that I bombed it. Wow. This is like a more different winter. When we played open qualifying, it was more straight across and gusting. This is more just like constant into brutal. We’ve got 196 to the front. What did we just play then? We played a 203. I’m just going to hit the same shot. Four iron. We’re pretty much the same wind. It’s if anything a slight bit more into it’s 215 to the middle. So I think just another boom bump it up there. Let it get on the green. I think if we get in the house at four over, we get our top five. I’m quite happy with that today. Leave it wind just shy. Couldn’t have done much more. I think a rescue would have maybe got up in the air too much and moved it around. But I struck that, ripped it. So, we’re happy. We’re doing good stuff here. We just need a good short game. Just everybody look here. This is the ball count thus far of what we found. Provens Wilson’s. It’s going to start our own lake ball site just shy. And now we’ve got a chip straight back into the wind. So we just need to land this on and let it run up. These are the ones that are super basic that just require that that I just need to really make every single one of these. It’s just going to I mean I landed it three foot by nearly went in had my heart in my mouth then for a second thinking he’s done it lads he’s chipped in after all the talk but I didn’t and now I’ve got to test him little pup. So I don’t know if this was one of the new things as well. They actually experimented with some scrapeway bunkers. actually don’t think that is one of them, but they uh they’ve did a couple down one and two which are just over here. They’re saying they just take a little bit too much time to maintain. So, they’re going back to riveted bunkers everywhere, which is fair enough. And sometimes I think a pop bunker on a lynx just doesn’t get more traditional than that. And it just looks brilliant. Yay. It was an up and down. It was an up and down. He’s had two this nine. Keeps us at five. We just need to pick one up. The par five should be drivable with this wind. Who knows? 163 for the 17th today. Sort of into off the right. Par three with a raised green. Can’t miss it. left, right, can’t miss it. Long, short, just got to hit a good shot. Luckily, the pin’s in the middle, so just thinks of a hole in one really, just to get us back on track. And just to cement, this is potentially one of my favorite golf courses that I’ve ever played. Come on now, wind. I tell you what, that’s a I’ve hit that exactly where I aimed it. I thought the wind was going to move it, but two great shots on those last par threes. I think that and that four iron, I’ve not hit two irons as good as that cuz they are high tariff irons. So, one didn’t result in a two. The other one must [Music] as I said surely going to be a two. Surely end over end. End over end. Ladies and gentlemen, could we have a birdie birdie finish? birdie eagle in fact to just miss out on the win by one but not to be donating to the charity pot which is probably a bad thing but I’m happy. So our 18th here is actually 537 yards. You get a beautiful view back out here when the tide’s out as well going out you get literally everything as you’re looking around and then over to over there but 18th hole over 50% of the green is hitting regulation here. Only 2% of people make an eagle, but 16% make a birdie. And that is what we want. We want to top that 2% up. But it’s a a challenging little one because you actually can’t see the fairway. You can see the green in the distance. It’s actually pretty much just underneath the windows of the clubhouse. You can see the flag 537. is downwind off the left here, but you were really dog legging around and you don’t want to get too off the right of the fairway because it’s a little bit dicey down there. So, at the uh the signpost that you can see, that is 300 y to that signpost. So, we’ll whack it there and then see what happens. That should be A1. It’s going to land just right at the post. Be any better. Well, fairway found. 190 to the front, 221 to the flag, and it is straight downwind. The back’s 235. My 7 is a 185 club. So that’s flying to the front sort of normally on a normal day or just shy of it. So today with that I think that carries the flag. So I’m just going to play to the front because actually there’s no real danger around the front. The bunkers are short of it and I watched a few balls actually when we got here today and we were doing a bit of other stuff. I saw quite a lot of people bouncing it in. So unagi. I’m going to go eight iron. just try and get it up in the air and let it bounce on to the green and hopefully we’re then looking at a tapping eagle. That would be that would be something rather rather saucy. He’s picked it and it’s right at the flag. Landed just shine. There we are. Piny coming around. Tell you what, when you’re on, you’re on, aren’t you? Send it to win it, folks. Send it to win it. Well, we are coming down the last and I have to say, I have thoroughly enjoyed this golf course. It’s in amazing condition, amazing scenery. People are lovely here. Clubhouse is lovely. Brilliant for the value. I’ve actually hit it over the back there with that last shot. I’m I’m that big. Um 8 I 230. No, nothing. But overall, I think it’s definitely gone into one of my top I’d say it’s up there in my top five I’ve played in Scotland. That’s big. That is big. It’s a uh been an absolute treat. Let’s see if we can go and hold this putt off the back of the green for a nice little eagle to finish. Just ran through ran through the back that bit short. Little thin. If it would have got half more of a groove on it, it would have probably been pin eye, but we’ve got a uh back into winged eagle put down the slope up the hill. Turn, turn, turn. Oh, thought the wind was going to hit that a little bit more. It’s a little birdie to finish. It’s a little birdie. Birdie, ladies and gentlemen, takes us back to back birdies. The three overpower, which as we all know gets us inside that top five, guys. Southern Nest. Thank you for having us. If you haven’t already, check it out. Subscribe for more. See you in another one.

Love it! Looks something else, can imagine with the wind up its a nightmare track.
You need to play Pennard Golf Course in Swansea named Links in the sky. That is absolutely breathtaking 😍
Did latterly the same thing been to the lake district and played Southerness and Silloth what a beutifull trip it was
What about a trip to Aberdovey?
Surprised you haven’t played it before, great course.
Have you played Powfoot, just up the road a little?
I played Southerness this Spring and loved it. Not just because it’s a lovely links, but also because everyone was super friendly and made me feel very welcome.
In a few weeks we are playing powfoot on the Saturday, southerness Sunday then silloth on the way home on the Monday. Pleased to see your videos at 2 of them
Have you ever played some of the 9 hole courses just north of southerness matt ?
I have played Southerness a few times. Lovely course, lots of heather & gorse if you are wayward or the wind blows hard. One of my personal favourites.
You seem to be one of the few YTP's that is motivated and has the attention span to play full 18 hole rounds. Good for you. Well done and most enjoyable viewing.
Looks like you had it easy, Matt – flat calm! When I played there a few years ago the pro told me you can't miss the 1st fairway it's so wide you could land a Jumbo Jet on it. I was 20yds into the rough on the right the wind was that strong!! Still enjoyed.
Used to be a member as a junior. Best course in the region.
We have a reciprocal with southerness, hope to get there this yr
Another good lap, well played. 👏
Good round, can be a bit difficult in the breeze.
Great round that Matt considering the wind!
Whereas it's great credit to you for your change of temperament etc I must admit I miss the old Matt sometimes 😁 fair play and good round Matt 👏👏
Entirely too long.. These should be 45 min tops..
less than a club wind.maybe 70….ok wind was not affecting the flag much on 1st green . 220 drive on 2 you got wind you are long so what did you have 3 club wind.. lets see
👍👍
Love the black wedges Matty.
