What is lag putting? It’s simply having the skill to purposefully leave a long putt just short of the hole, with the primary goal to master speed control for an easier next putt. When you can master it, you can shave a handful of strokes off your scorecard. 📉
While lag putting is crucial to score lower, it’s not something many average golfers tend to practice. Instead, most players just work on gaining more club head speed with the driver — which is fun, but won’t necessarily help your golf game improve. 😓
But by using this clever ladder drill from golf teacher Robert Randall of Redtail Golf Club, you can dial in your lag putting, improve your putting distance control, and be on your way towards becoming a wizard on the putting surface. 🪄

I don’t know if it’s going to get there. All right, Robert, I’ve told you bane of my existence right here. Putting I mean, I can hit the ball. Okay, I can get fairways, but when I get on the putting green, man, I can’t tell you how many times I three putt. Okay, you have a drill set up here. Pretty interesting. Walk me through to help eliminate that and dial in my speed control. Yeah. So, it’s pretty much a ladder drill. Yeah. So, all you need is three T’s, right? And you can set the first T wherever you want to, right? But then you at least want to give yourself a couple paces between you and the next one. And you marked it off. It’s about 24. So I I did eight paces, right? So all I did was put that first tee down and I just take my pace. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 to the next T. Right now, this T is where the drill starts from. Okay? So, we need to hit the ball to this T or past this T. Okay. So, then from there, I’ve done six more paces. Okay. One, two, three, four, five. Incorrect. I’ve done five more paces. Okay. So, now this is the end part of the drill. Okay. What you’re trying to do, you hit your first putt past that T. You’re trying to hit every putt longer than the last putt you hit. Right? So, if you don’t do that, the drill’s over. If you hit it past this tee, the drill’s over. You’re trying to put as many balls as you can in between these two T’s. All right, great. And it’s a great for lag putting to eliminate three putts, to do all kinds of different stuff. The closer you can keep these balls, the better the speed controls getting. All right, Robert. So, for expectations, you said off camera your kind of high score is five, right? Correct. So, if I can get three, a little bit more than half, then I should be happy. Right. Right. Can’t beat myself up if I don’t even get that done though. And I’ll just tell you one thing before you hit this first putt. Yeah. Don’t worry so much in this first go about putting it as close to that first te as you can. Just make sure you get it there. Get it there. Okay. So, just get it past that first te. Yep. Doesn’t matter how far. There you go. Oh, slow down. That’s all right. Okay. This first go is just kind of have your baseline Get there. Get past. That’s perfect, dude. Okay, that’s totally fine. Okay, so this is my third. I need to get it past that. That one feels pretty good. Slow down. Sit. Ah, I think you’re a pass. I think I’m pass. So, two is my record now. Correct. I mean, this is not an easy drill. No, it is not even a little bit. And that’s kind of why I love it so much cuz it’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to give you a little bit of challenge. So then when you have this 30ft putt on the course, you’re like, you know, I can put this right next to the cup. I know exactly what I’m going to do. But it’s because you put yourself through a very difficult drill, not an easy drill. Yeah. And what I like about it is so many times you see a 34 like that that I went far, I’m disappointed with, but actually on the course that’s a hell of a putt, right? Like I’m right next to the cup. But for the drill, that’s just hitting and praying. Exactly, right? Like it’s like, okay, can I get it to 30 ft? Sure, I can get it there, but that has no touch. It’s just I’m hoping that it gets there and it’s next to the the 30 foot that I need to make. So, 100%. I I really like this. That was beautiful. All right. So, just that every time. I think he did it. Yes, sir. All right. I’m feeling dialed in. Robert. Yes, sir. Get past. That’s That’s definitely passed, dude. Yeah. Slow down. Slow down. Slow down. Hit it. Oh, it almost went in. It did. Okay. So, three. That’s my number. But that’s a great drill. I those first three I felt like, all right, I’m hitting these solid. My stroke feels so smooth. And then the last one I was like, I need to get it past that third ball. So, I went a little bit too hard. But this is an awesome drill, man. Yeah. Awesome. [Music]
