Well, Kev, the day has finally come where you’ve managed to pick up a lab press grip.
Yeah, about three months in waiting
and uh we’re going to do what Odyssey couldn’t do is put a press grip on their zero torque putter which has got a bit of a lean. Have you got comfortable using it with a standard grip?
No, not at all.
It’s funny you said that because when I reviewed this putter, that’s all I said it was missing. You know, I just felt that because I got used to using a lab put with a press grip on. For me, I felt like that lean left it to my judgment rather than sort of getting set in a position that we’re comfortable with every time. And I weren’t sure if I got it pushed forward enough, if I were delofting it, or there were too much loft. So, I think this is going to be revolutionary for you.
Yeah. I saw a video we uh telling Dan, Odyssey technical uh guy, and he says when you set up, if you can see any white insert, you got too much loft on it. So you have to then obviously press forward
and that’s perfect.
Yeah.
But it’s it’s just feels awkward. It don’t feel uh comfortable at all.
I mean being a golfer, I’m somebody that don’t like to kind of like set up then press forward. I like to sort of set up around the putter and how it sits. So for me, I think once this grips on, I think you’ll find setting up dead easy. Yeah. Well, I’ve just tried Dan’s and uh it just sent so much easier.
And Dan’s got the Lab putter if you’re not aware, the DF3. You’ll put a closeup of that one in. So, basically, we’re going to try and make an half price DF3 putter, aren’t we?
Yeah.
Why did you not go down that route a lab?
Uh, just be honest.
Probably cost it and I don’t think they’re the best looking putters.
Does your wife watch these videos?
She will watch this one. See, I just wonder if he’s got to be careful what he says or
No. I mean, to be fair, Dan knows I spend fortunes on golf. Yeah,
it’s never an issue. We are uh I think it will looks more than
you just obviously I mean to be fair I’m familiar with Odyssey Porters myself so it’s kind of the Versa style design is kind of it’s easy on the eye is it something we kind of
I do like the insert
what I would say in Lab’s defense though I weren’t a massive fan of the DF3 till I got one and you know when you start putting well and Dan will agree you soon that look just becomes like you love it because you’re putting well with it. Yeah. I think when you see them on YouTube or on telly
Yeah.
they look really big.
But when you actually get one and you’re over it,
they they’re not as big as what you know what they look on screen.
If you’re wondering guys, what’s your handicap now?
The 11 point. I told you an handicap earlier and you got offended, didn’t you? You come down a lot.
Very rude. Right. So, what we’re going to do, we’re going to do a little bit of a before and after. So, I think there’ll be a lot of people who’s got this putter with a standard grip on it and they’ll be very curious to whether a press grip could actually help it.
Yeah. One of my pals, he got it couple of three weeks after I got this one, exactly same putter.
Yeah. And we’ve just been on about it. He he he has to up and he’s pressed really forward.
Yeah.
Although he likes the putter, I think he’d benefit from doing this.
Well, I’m sure he’ll be watching. So, you’ve had a good warm up already, haven’t you?
Y. So, I want you to we’re going to do some tests with the white balls. It’ll not take too long, guys. We’ll get some results and then we’ll put it headto head with the same putter of a press grip on just to see what your reaction is to feel. But whether there is any wow factors to changing the grip or are we just sort of kidding ourselves?
Yeah.
So, we’ve got a lag put. We’re using the Groove Fix lag hoop if anyone’s wondering what that is.
Um, and we’re going to basically we’ve marked the tea and wherever the balls finish, we’ll leave them because we’ve got the yellow balls. So, we’ll we’ll just leave them where they finish on each test. We’ll do three tests. We’re using Prov1 yellow and white. Bit more up on that than what I thought. That’s not actually that bad, is it? [Applause] Just taking me behind camera. He’s telling him to aim for white circle. They’re nearly puts, aren’t they? They’re kind of not bad puts, but they’re just not close enough. That looks as though it breaks so much. I’d be hoping to get very close to boundaries.
Yeah. See, that’s my ecclesial shot.
Yeah, let’s leave them where they are. We didn’t quite think ahead. We needed them balls. So, we’ve marked with TE’s uh in the last test. So, we’ll keep them TE’s there. We’re going to do a six foot put test. Now, this is the key to scoring if you can hold these ones. So, we need to count how many he gets out of five. Just step away. Step away. Let’s just So now go through it and set up from behind and try not to sort of try and take each put individually. Hold on. Maybe should we just start that test again and we can leave that in just to show a bit of what Kev will probably I mean that’s the lesson for everybody at home
is when you’re practicing you’ve got to take each p start because it’s not a fair test otherwise
you’ve got to take every port as a separate put and I think you were kind of like just
your feet your feet were fixed and you were so it’s a serious we need some good results from this We’re not trying to make Odyssey slip up here or Odyssey grip lose. It’s I want it to be an honest test because I don’t want people going out and buying a lab putter grip if it’s not going to we don’t think it’s going to help. But from my initial testing, I’m quite hopeful this could work. How many would you expect to make out of five, Kev? From 64
from there. Two.
Two. Is that with a an Odyssey put or a good putter?
Uh, probably with this one, I’d say. I’m just joking. I love Odyssey as a brand. I love the putters. I just wish they’d put a press grip on this.
So, I’ve got me target. That’s brilliant. So, that’s actually probably above average for you now, which is really going to put the lab uh, you know, grip and setup to the test. So, three out of five. So, we’re doing a really long put to test what the ball actually rolls like off the face because Kev’s obviously having to press his hands forward. It makes me wonder whether he might like release his hand, you know, and help it there and put loft on it. So, we’re gonna say because you said you struggle, don’t you, with your longer puts. We’ve got a really long put.
We’ve got the uh
lag put hoop, which just so you guys can see where he’s going. Do you struggle to get him there? Is that what it is?
Yeah, more often than not, it’s pier. That’s perfect example to be fair. Just leaving them short. And does it feel uncomfortable to try and take it a bit further back?
Yeah. Yeah. See what it’s rolling like? Is it not? No, it’s not too bad. We can leave them balls there as well if we mark the lag put with tease. to me. I think he does. He is more on shy side though, isn’t he?
Oh, yeah.
Whether or not the press grip will help him get there or not. See, that feels better purse wise. So, just remember he’s near that them two black marks. Anybody that tells me you can blow one of these off and put it back on, we aren’t damaging it. You’re a liar. Honestly, because it’s stitch back, you just you just ruin them. And um obviously because we’re doing this test today, we can’t blow it off and and do it
like a challenge to
instantly. You can remove them. Don’t get me wrong. You can remove them, but to try and remove them without damaging them, you just ruin the stitch back and they don’t fit the same. I just What we’re saying is if you don’t like this new grip 40 down grip there no longer use I don’t think there’s any doubt about this but we’ll see. I mean obviously Kev’s going to go into a putter that feels different to him now is he and we know when we bought lab putters there is a bit of a sort of transition period. You can’t just move straight into him. But if he can match his performance or if he can even feel comfortable well it’s a win.
It’s a win is it? I’m kicking myself. I didn’t test this before we rip the grip off in the revealer, but we have done that test already when we did the review. And what we notice where is it’s very low torque, but obviously in the revealer, it was sort of sitting open and then it were kind of staying open through the stroke. So, we’re going to see now what it does with a press grip on. See if that has any effect to see if it actually improves the way that it swings in the revealer. What do you reckon? What’s your predictions, guys? You think the grip is going to do anything? Cheers, Dan. It’s It’s not returning anywhere, is it? It’s sort of as it should be. It It is worse. It’s sat very open and it’s it’s moving more, isn’t it? Now that we never we didn’t forecast that issue, did we?
No.
So, we’ve now got the press grip, but you’ve not got a zero torque butter. Oh dear. Do you think I should have showed him that?
Well, there is a solution.
What’s that? By a lab.
DF3. He’s now got an excuse if Mrs. is watching. We’ve tried everything. So to make it as fair a test as we can, we are just letting him have a little bit of a feel of the putter before we do these tests again. I mean first impressions Kev.
Yeah.
How do you feel just if you just sort of just line up to a hole? Does it has it changed the way that it feels?
Yeah. I can’t see the insert now.
Right. Okay.
I don’t I don’t feel like I’m pressing.
You’re not having to maneuver it.
Yeah.
You just stand into it and it’s it’s kind of I think for me Oh my god. Thanks for tuning in.
Right, Kev, here we go. I’m going to stand here just in case any of these TE’s I need to lift. He’s straight in first. Looks a bit shy, but it’s within the circle. It’s an improvement on one of the others coming off. You gave me that.
What’s it feel like, though?
All right. Good. It does. It lines up much better. I’ll tell you what is an improvement. If you were to draw a line,
they’re a straighter line. Aren’t the dispersion lines better?
Back. Oh, don’t move it. Don’t move it.
Uh,
I mean, look, if you look at it from, it’s for you guys to even conclude on what’s putting us. You can see the results. I mean, he’s got two there that are tapins. He probably only had that one there, but it’s not as close. And I just think the dispersion’s better. Back to front. He still had one short and one long. But I think it’s definitely It’s definitely one if we’re going to
just feels like I don’t have to do as much when I’m getting over that ball to uh line up.
If we summarizely at this stage, you want to Does it feel? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Million% better.
Right. Six foot test. Um, this is going to be hard to beat cuz you got three, didn’t you, on last one.
But all I want you to do is make sure you go through your routine and you take every put every ball separately. To me, it looks more controlled what he’s doing. If you can see that it just looks more connection and more it’s repeated more just give a side on view. I think people at home might be able to spot this, but we’re waiting for Yeah. I ain’t seen that yet. I mean, he’s got this to beat it after first one could have gone in, couldn’t it? He’s literally lipped out. He just looks Yeah,
he were he worked to be fair. I could have probably told him I’m going to miss that left, but he hit it kind of where he were aiming.
Yeah. So results wise it’s a draw but I’d have to look at the video
feel more comfortable
I thought I mean I can’t remember the first ones but I felt like you were again he weren’t online as much were dispersion was quite off right long put that’s going to be an interesting one I’ll put the ring there so you can see and I’ll just I’ll keep an eye on them ball so it doesn’t hit any
I think they’re going to be get in the comments guys if you’d like us to put this putter head with a DF3 putter um I’m So, it could be of interest to some people if you We do a lot of putter videos. I think we’re getting a lot of putters sent to us. People are enjoying these tests that we’re doing. Dan says this is going to be a hard one to beat. And no pressure, Ke, but I think he could be right. But we weren’t expecting him to sort of jump straight into it, were we?
If there’s some early good signs That that jump that Oh, that would ring. It would have been about there. That’s a lovely weight, Kev. Brilliant. He’s got it. Take this grip off. Sure. I mean, there’s one thing. He’s got that one. the one that deflect that hit this ball here. It were at a lovely weight. It were going to be So, I popped it there. Try and keep it as fair as we can.
Yeah.
Um, you know, you’ve got two one in. I mean,
I mean,
it’s better results
on that put the yellow with this grip.
Yeah.
Came out better only just and yellows have come out with this grip on long put only just but it does feel more comfortable. I must admit, definitely.
I think as a golf coach looking at you, I think now you can set with that putter head in a consistent place and you know, if you allow it just to sit naturally, the putter, you know, you’ll have that lean preset. I just think it’s a no-brainer because obviously when you’re pushing your hands forward, it can adjust your shoulder angle. You can it can throw you all out. So,
it’s just uncomfortable.
And I think I think that’s been seen in the results that your dispersion’s been better. You know, again, everything’s more in a line. It’s tighter side to side. Guys, get in the comments. What did you think that test? Did you enjoy it? And would you like us to put it head-to-head with a DF3? I think that’s as close as that putter could be now to a lab. Um, and a lot of people probably say it’s anric lab. Although, as we saw in the revealer, putting the press grip on it is not good for, you know, the zero technology, is it?
Uh, which I think Lab will be probably pleased to see really. Otherwise, they would have been getting worried. I think final thanks to Waterfront as well for letting us get out on the putting green and do this test. Thanks for watching guys. Make sure you subscribed and we’ll get Cav back on for the DF3 test. I think you up for it.
Yeah. Yeah, definitely.
Problem is if he likes it too much, is it? Everything’s for sale.
Everything’s for sale. We’ll see you in a few days time, guys. Bye.

  1. let me guess, it's another LAB putter video GM?? You're always pushing the envelope on youtube golf creation… 😉

  2. All you need is a golf grip removal tool, it came off easy. I tried a super stroke grip it didn’t work so I put the Odyssey grip back on and sold the putter.

  3. Great experiment. I don't understand why grip manufacturers haven't jumped on the bandwagon to create forward press grips. I would jump right on it – I am struggling with the forward press on the Taylormade Spider ZT Counterbalance.
