England’s Most Beautiful (and Brutal) Golf Course? Bournemouth Tour: Episode 1

i just will lead in with I this could be my new
favourite course in Ferndown Golf Club could potentially be my new favourite golf course in
England and here’s why this is Andy Ali and me three mates with one shared obsession chasing
birdies avoiding doubles and soaking up every fairway that we can find two good shots there not
so much Andy we’re not pros we’re just three mid- handicappers who love golf for everything it
gives back and together we are experiencing some of the best golf courses which Bournemouth
has to offer so sit back and enjoy this epic journey with us we are starting at the legendary
Ferndown Golf Club a course full of history and beauty but plenty of ways to humble us welcome
to Bournemouth the golf tour okay ready rolling rolling we’ve packed up the clubs dodged the M25
and made the trip from London down to the sunny south coast welcome to Bournemouth how’s that
looking all right this town has it all beautiful beaches sea views appear older than most of our
golf swings and more sunshine than anywhere else in the UK so we make our 140 mile trip down
from London to Bournemouth and after a couple of service station snacks and at least one wrong
turn we’ve landed here in sunny Bournemouth this beautiful and very popular location in the south
of England sits right next to the Jurassic Coast it’s inspired painters poets and even Tolken
so if Middle Earth magic brought him here it’s good enough for us but we’re not here to tan
or time travel we’re here for the goal the kind of courses where beauty meets challenge
and mid- handicappers like us try to hold it together welcome to the beautiful Ferndown Golf
Club this hole looks tough so we’ve got bunkers on the right bunkers on the left it’s uphill i
would say it’s it’s pretty narrow i’d rather go left than right this could be embarrassing or it
could be good oh it’s a low stinger but I’ve got away with it that is If you put a tracer on
that it would be like a lo on the floor i’m going to do the tracer up and just give it a
little bit more log so it doesn’t do it as bad right no why have I done this as soon as the
camera comes out mate as soon as the Come on as soon as the camera comes out I play so well
one mate I hit Look I literally hit the ground here god can we just have a mulligan can I just
get a mulligan i hate this game this is three off the tea fairly in case you didn’t know
okay great great i’ve done it again [Music] that just hit the trees it’s just plop down yeah
well well we all know what your golf game is like but I’m We’re here we’re here we’re here in
Bournemouth Ferndown Golf Club i can’t complain even though I just dropped yourself cry there’s
a quiet elegance to Ferndown Golf Club the kind you don’t often find anymore tucked away in the
heart of Dorset it doesn’t shout for attention it simply lets the landscape speak tall pines
line the fairways like old friends and the air carries that unmistakable stillness you only get
on the course with history in its bones every step here feels timeless from the soft crunch
of gravel underfoot to the gentle undulations of fairways shaped by nature it’s a place that
values tradition but never feels outdated where the game flows naturally unforced what have you
got little rescue yardage it’s not It’s not It’s not great the lie is very bare uphill what’s
your yardage then yardage about 220 uphill i could probably should be hitting a 3-wood but I
don’t think I can get to it off this lie should we ring the clubhouse i don’t think I can get
to the clubhouse i don’t know if I can get this off the ground i need up and down really
to have any chance that’s horrendous isn’t it tell you what I’ll take that bucket and
spade oh wait it went over oh did it pop back out it bounced over it sort of like Oh
that’s fine i can I can drain that from there and you’ve still got Look you’ve got what
good shot 170 uphill you’re not getting on it’s a good fourth shot all right no hero
shots needed it’s a great finishing hole there yep that’s good that’s so good so good i
mean what can I [Music] do fair play fair play from the moment I arrived at Ferndown there was
this quiet sense of familiarity like I’d been there before even though I hadn’t it felt like the
kind of place where everybody knew each other’s name and visitors are welcomed like old friends i
took a few minutes before the round just to soak it all in the soft hum of conversation on the
terrace the rustle of the pines in the breeze the gentle click of the ball being rolled across
the putting green there’s something about Ferndown that slows you down in the best possible way this
is blew me away hopefully you can see behind me just like where this is situated the land around
is absolutely stunning it’s a great piece of land to have a golf course and they’re maintaining
it so well the bunkers the aprons running off the green there’s so much detail they’re almost
like checkered and then it runs straight and then you get to the green it’s just visually very
very nice what I loved about Ferndown is that it doesn’t try to overpower you it’s not long for
the sake of being long it’s clever and subtle you have to think your way around it every T-shot
asks a question and there’s usually more than one right answer the bunkering is old school not
dramatic but always in the right place and the greens they roll true but if you’re on the wrong
tier or side of the slope you’ll pay for it it’s a course that rewards patience and punishes
ego which I actually really respect more than anything it’s just peaceful walking those fairways
with the trees swaying and no real noise but your own footsteps it’s the kind of round that stays
with you even after you’ve packed your clubs away you’re about two foot off donating two pound two
to five two to five i think I would have gone for five cuz that’s the kind of guy I am that’s
This is This is nasty and it’s game over so I might have a bit of a I’m just going to try
hold as well try and drain it little flopper from there that’s pretty good it just just a tiny
bit more and that was delicious no mate that’s I’m just going to go put out that was really really
good actually I’ll put out on my putter i’ll play properly sometimes you’ve got to give him a few
compliments otherwise he’ll give up golf cuz he plays really bad yeah great shot mate well done
mate thanks thanks that was really really good just got to do it again i really want to be angry
but sometimes you just have to say fair play would have I actually even if I hit my first shot in
play would have I beaten that probably not so it’s like what could I do steps up do you want
me to finish first cuz you know how they do in the championships like they always want the
champion to putt last and have the honour and just to tilt the cap so I think you should just
let me do it and then I’ll lead the way for you to take it take it home that for a six is it
it’s a respectable six mate a respectable six that’s so good you finished on a high
get over and over and over again that one put now you’re back you’re back i
want to come back here i will be back here right finish it off i fancy a little
birdie to be honest got to say I do fancy it you need a blow need a
blow out the way bit breezy today drop drop drop oh oh the 18th at Ferndown
brought the round to a quiet close a mix of relief laughs and maybe a few lessons learned i
finished it with a solid finish but Alli had one of those holes that we all know too well golf
always finds a way to humble you even on the very last green but as we stood there looking
back down the fairway the score didn’t seem to matter so much you had that kind of stillness
you only get at the end of a good round and that’s what you remember Ferndown doesn’t try to
impress you with big finishes it lets the course and the company speak for itself and honestly
that’s what makes it so special yeah that’s good well played mate well played well played well
played so burned down absolutely beautiful golf course if you’re interested and you want to
play this golf course maybe you want to do a tour in Bournemouth get in contact with your golf
travel absolutely littered with experts in golf and they’re going to create the best package
for you and Ferndown should definitely be on your golfing list if you are coming or live in
the UK and want to play some great golf [Music]
