dustin Johnson was never the type of golfer anyone pictured grinding away on the senior circuit once a dominant force on the game’s biggest stages the two-time major champion has faded from the major spotlight missing five of his last seven cuts and slipping from the top tier of the sport johnson’s last great moment in a major came at Oakmont Country Club the sight of this week’s US Open where he claimed his first major title in 2016 since then his form in the majors has declined his most recent top 10 finish came two years ago when Johnson joined the breakaway LIIV golf league three years ago his motivation was straightforward for me it was playing less making more money he said bluntly in Netflix’s full swing doeries and he stayed true to that mantra while other LIIV players have sought additional competition outside of the league’s 14 events Johnson has stuck to a lighter schedule even if it’s meant fewer chances to shine on golf’s biggest stages the clock is ticking on his major exemptions johnson’s 2020 Masters victory grants him a lifetime pass to Augusta National but his 5-year major exemption will run out after this year’s Open Championship at Royal Portrait his 10-year US Open exemption earned with that 2016 win expires after next year’s tournament at Shinikok Hills but don’t expect to see Johnson hanging around just for nostalgia i think I’ve got another 6 years in me he told the Associated Press i can grind for another 6 years and then I’m going fishing that’s the plan six more years of competitive golf not coasting on past glory i in a December interview with Bunker Johnson emphasized that he’s still motivated by winning and competition competition winning it’s still what drives me he said speaking to reporters this week at Oakmont the former world number one said his game is inching closer to where it needs to be golf is a strange sport he reflected i don’t feel like I’ve slipped any my scores haven’t reflected my form but it is a really fine line he recalled a stretch earlier in his career where he shot backto-back rounds of 80 missed two straight cuts and then won the very next week “for me it’s always really close to being good.” He said “It’s just about getting back there and staying consistent over the last couple of months I’m starting to see a lot of patterns and the game feels like it’s coming back in a good form for now Johnson isn’t thinking about senior tours or ceremonial T-shots he’s thinking about winning and if his instincts are right he may still have one more major run left in him before he finally swaps the driver for a fishing rod
