when i think back at my roots there’s so many things that happened to fall into place that made me who i am today and pensacola is a part of that golf taught me about giving it’s just something i’ve learned about helping and wanting to give back community is near and dear to my heart because i believe that this city made me who i am as his career progressed i think he started to realize that achievements on the course really weren’t the most important thing to him and so we started talking about how can he have an impact and how can he make it a lasting impact i think the children’s hospital was one of those things that really fit that bill for him i’m not sure we really believed it would happen in the beginning if you look at the gap where there was no children’s hospital pretty much from tallahassee all the way over to mobile which is like 177 or 200 miles well that’s not unusual with big large geography because you need about 1.8 million people they feel to justify a children’s hospital we don’t have 1.8 million people however we do have children that need care bubba got involved we started talking to him about the impact him and his family could have on the children’s hospital you know i think in bubba and angie’s case because of their level of involvement in it it was easy to get behind the concept being able to see the evolution from sort of the first design to the second design to the third design it started to become even more personal it’s going to be bubbly it’s going to be colorful it’s going to have themes it’s going to have stuff on the wall for kids to feel like it’s theirs i said “what about the hallways a little bit wider so kids can drive cars?” he had this vision of kind of like a shot tracker mentality of when you drive down the main road to get to the children’s hospital and he talked about these colorful arches that lead to the entrance of the children’s hospital and i thought “wow that’s that was a pretty cool creative idea that only his mind could see.” the original plan was the hospital was going to cost 80 or$85 million to build and they needed to raise of $30 million locally the ask of the community was an amount that has never been achieved throughout the history of pensacola or northwest florida since the inception and design of the new stutter family children’s hospital the watson family has donated over $2 million this is where we grew up this is our home and those are the people that made me how you doing nice to meet you a nice to meet you and now i’m just doing my part trying to be a part of the community be another citizen that’s just trying to help it wasn’t about recognition but more they wanted their gift to inspire others the green jackets put me on a different platform my voice is heard differently and so people listen we’ve already started building it please help us out let’s raise some money for charity the community really rallied behind it they were able to raise the money and raise the money a lot faster than i think perhaps anybody really expected we got it done we raised $32 million beat our goal and now we have this beautiful new children’s hospital to serve the [Music] community watching that dream come to reality it was special [Music] i watched parents be reminded that they weren’t forgotten and that we as a community were there for them and their child in their time of need how y’all doing oh we couldn’t be better [Music] baba wanted to make sure that his image in pensacola florida was way bigger than being a professional golfer being here and going through this situation as horrible as it was it’s the biggest blessing and it’s also restores our faith and community just seeing how amazing everyone is we’re so grateful it’s just amazing for sure for sure he was adamant from the beginning that he didn’t want to just help get it built he wants to keep making it better that’s when the legacy part came in that’s where when we’re not here anymore the hospital’s still going to be there it’s the only children’s hospital across northwest florida and it allows families to stay within pensacola so for us to have that here in pensacola you don’t think it’s needed until it’s needed show them your muscles show them how show them oh show them yeah show them carter is a special case gosh it’s amazing to think that he’s up and walking and talking carter has had multiple open heart procedures he’s one of 14 children like him diagnosed with what he has in the world right before carter’s first birthday he was diagnosed with a rare syndrome called takenochi kosaki syndrome it affects multiple body systems multiple body organs what the stutter family children’s hospital provides to carter is a medical home to where 80 to 90% of his care can be treated right here in northwest florida yeah knock it in there oh this is the rooftop healing garden but today it’s our putting green um so for us it’s fun golf’s tough it’s amazing to think that there’s kids like that that now have a chance parents like that that now have a place to have a chance hold on let’s fix this first there you go that club right there you go nice i fixed the club and he made it i’m like a good caddy they did tell us that they thought carter would never walk on his own and he is now 7 years old running around t-ball bases it’s always been a dream to have a son and carry on the legacy i just didn’t know i think we get to this point so i’m very appreciative there you go ready yes the impact of the investment bubba made at stutter family children’s hospital is touching over 50,000 children per year 50,000 lives are better because angie and bubba invested in this children’s hospital it’s pretty remarkable to think that golf got me to a level where we can do the things that help other people the hospital is one of a few things that we’ve been a part of convoy of hope we are a nonprofit organization that has a driving passion to feed the world one of the ways that convoy of hope helps families is by resourcing their farms and the way we do that is through goats they are one of the most hearty animals you can have on a farm everybody seriously who doesn’t love goats hey stop stop it we launched a program in conjunction with convoy of hope where we donate a goat for every team we beat in every live golf event so there’s 13 teams in liv if we win a tournament that’s 12 goats we donate to convoy of hope’s agricultural program that week the nutrition of goat milk is the best nutrition in the world when it comes to milk and so it made sense for the goats to give away goats me and the range goats we went down with convoy hope to guatemala and met some of the families that have goats met some of the families that are in need we took them all the way up into the hills of guatemala to see actual goats we wanted them to see that they are really making a difference not just on the golf course but out in the real world regardless of the problems that you have going on in your life to be able to come out here and see like the resources that other people you know have or don’t have and stuff it’s uh it’s pretty eye opening bubba brought his son on the trip with him and it was emotional for me to watch how bubba was wanted to introduce his son to something bigger for him to come and see it it’s a dream for me as a parent i want him to experience this i want him to want to give back for me and our family and my golf team i wanted to do more than just put a golf club in somebody’s hand i see it differently than just golf i see it more let’s make a real impact bubba cares about eternity and long lasting legacy every time i’m around him he always continually says “we have to do something because it’s more than just about golf.” bubba’s always seen golf as a means to do what he wants to do which is to truly make a difference in people’s lives isn’t that why we all live to make the world the best place we can live it’s overwhelming um to think that a guy with my education level and my my skill set you know a guy named bubba from baghdad florida without golf lessons to to change people’s lives i can tell you that there’s not many people that i know that have grown in his desire to serve and care for others more more than this man right here high five high five high five nice he cares so deeply for people it’s it’s amazing to watch if you say bubble watson the golfer you’re limiting who i am i feel i’m much more than that
