CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) –A mini golf tournament was held Sunday to support the Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue team ahead of the busy summer season.

The event, called the Ocean Rescue Open, took place at the Putter Pub on Winner Avenue. It was organized by business owner Ryan O’Rourke and Carolina Beach Town Council Member Joe Benson.

The tournament featured up to 36 two-person teams competing for a variety of prizes. A majority of the proceeds will benefit the lifeguards of Carolina Beach’s Ocean Rescue.

According to Benson, the fundraiser was created to show appreciation following a season in which ocean rescue staff conducted 381 rescues.

“Sometimes just acknowledging that they are there and thanking them for what they are doing is enough,” Benson said. “Thousands and thousands of people that go out into our ocean come here to the beach and enjoy themselves. They are (ocean rescue) always on point and they are there when you need them most.”

Benson said the event may return in the future. The tournament was open through the evening, with entry fees set at $25 for individuals and $50 for teams.
