Obviously, we all want to hit the driver better. You want to hit your driver better. I want to hit my driver better. But how do we do it? Well, how you start the down swing is so important. There’s one main message that we’re going to show you with three little pieces to it that’s going to get you starting the down swing correctly and more importantly hitting your driver much better. Let’s dive right in. Hey guys, Eric Agorno here with Performance Golf. In today’s video, we’re talking about how to start the down swing with your driver. Super important if you want to go hit your driver better when you play, which I know you do. We’ve got a drill here today called the shift, tuck, and turn drill, which I don’t think many people have seen before. It’s one of Mr. Martin Hall’s many famous drills to help you hit the driver better. Martin just got done with his training program, the billiondoll T-shot with performance golf. I’m going to talk about that at the end. How you can grab that. You’re going to want to grab that so you can go hit your T-shots better. And part of that right today, Martin, we know how you start the down swing is so important. I love this little threepart drill that we turn into one move if you can guide us through how it works. Yeah. So, so obviously I’ve been doing this teaching a long time and you try things that work and you try things that don’t work. Over a period of time, I found something like shift, tuck, turn, three little pegs that people could hang their thoughts on work very well. So in the down swing, so we can we can go the long way. You have to have lateral motion of the center of the pelvis. You have to have ex trail shoulder external rotation coming down and you have to have suppination coming into the ball. We could say that or we could say you shift, you tuck, you turn. It’s much easier to say shift, tuck, turn. Now, what are we shifting? We are actually shifting the center of your pelvic, but you can just think of shifting your weight. So, I want you to set up actually. Yep. And just make a back swing for me for the moment. So, there’s a lot of reasons to shift, but one of them is it allows you to sort of get the club on a plane that’s going to hit the ball reasonably towards the target. If you turn your hips immediately from the top, I didn’t tell Eric to do that. He didn’t. I don’t. But that club’s going just going to go out there to the degree that it becomes unplayable. I don’t mind a little bit out to in. I don’t like 15° out to him. That doesn’t work. So, the shift is for power and it’s to get the club on plane. So, let’s talk about the shift. We’ll address this camera here. Take your setup for me. You could at home if you didn’t have an old pro helping you, you could just stick an alignment rod in the ground. But I’m going to hold the driver there a few inches away from your left hip, your lead hip. Make your back swing and stop. Now come on, Eric. Close that gap. Shift. No. No. More shift. More shift. Okay. That to me was too early with the turn. Still too early with the turn. That’s it. That’s it. We’re going to shift. What? That’s more shift than you would normally make, isn’t it? Yeah. So, I would say you turn into your shift, but you need some shift. I don’t like people rotating too early. So, let’s play that one more time. I want you to go to the top and close that gap. I love that. I think that’s way better. Okay. I mean, we’re going to turn through, but I love that. So, that’s the shift. You’re not turning too early. You’re not clearing the hip too early. That’s the shift. All right, guys. Quick break from today’s video. But look, if you want to make massive improvements with your game and actually get way better in 2025, you got to do something different than you’ve done before. And one of those things that I highly recommend is checking out these two-day schools that my friends at Performance Golf are hosting. These are with the best coaches in the world. People you see me in videos with all the time like Martin Chuck, Andrew Rice, Erica Lark, and many more of the top coaches at awesome, awesome places all around the United States. We’re seeing great results with these schools because what we’re able to do when we see you in person is really find and fix the main root issue. Most all of us have like four or five things wrong with our swing. You can’t do them all at one time, but you can find and fix the main one thing which we can do in person like that. We’re able to make massive improvements. I’m talking like maybe two years of improvements in only 2 days. So, if you’re looking for something to really fast track your improvement, this could be the thing that could take you to the next level. We’ll put a link in the description down below. Check it out. See if there’s a spot available in a location that works for you. What was that second word? Um um Oh, we’ve got to tuck something. Yeah. What have we got to tuck the elbow? Lot of elbows. Now, when you’re coming down, I think it’s really important again to get that club in a sort of a delivery that would run into the ball nicely. You have to tuck tuck the elbow. Now, my favorite drill for that that I’ve had the most success with is I’ll take your club away from you is I’m going to put your left palm about opposite your right leg and I’m going to take your elbow take your back. Now, clobber your left hand with that elbow. That’s that’s the motion we want from your right arm. I mean, all too often we see this and you could say that’s trail shoulder external rotation. You didn’t shallow the shaft. You could say that or you could just say, “Oh, come on. Tuck your elbow.” The simpler we keep it, the better. So, tuck the elbow. And then, so let’s hit hit one with that. Shift and tuck. Okay. And then we’re going to talk about the turn. And it probably won’t be what you think. You’re going to shift and tuck. That’s great practice. Uh, have you ever seen the player Justin Rose once or twice? Once, twice. He’s fairly good, isn’t he? Just see how he practices his swing. He shifts and he tucks. He shifts and he doesn’t actually hit the ball like that, but he’s burying a feel into his sort of his feelings of the motion that will make it almost impossible that he’s just going to swipe right across the ball. Yep. Okay. Shift and tuck. Shift and tuck. Shift and tuck. And then we’ve got to turn something. Shift and tuck. Shift and tuck. Uh, that was, as old Henry Longer would have said, an absolute corker. That was a cracker right there. Take that one. We take that. So, shift, tuck, and turn. Now, what shall we turn? Oh, there’s an interesting thought. Shall we turn the hips? Shall we turn the chest? Shall we turn the feet? No. You’re going to turn your left elbow towards your left hip. Okay. So, you can square the club face up. So, I think there’s a shift. There’s a tuck and the turn is going to be to take your left elbow and you can get the club close to the ball. But I do this with a lot of students. I like people to know that the lead elbow needs to be pointing about at the lead hip when you hit the ball. It’s the best way to square the club face up. I know having the lead elbow in the sky and trying to swirl the club around your hands. Good luck with that. So I’m okay. So I’m turning. Shift the tuck and the turn. Tuck and the turn. Shift as you close this gap. Tuck as you take your right elbow to my hand. And turn as you turn your left elbow. Oh, I like that. Okay. To your left hip. And you can see how that squares the club up beautifully. And I think as I said, I’ve done this such a long time and I find that little little catchy little things like that all the time I was on the golf channel, people say, “Oh, I remember that bit where you said shift, tuck, turn, or you know, hold it, fold it, and go for the gold or whatever.” I said, people can identify with those things. So to start that down swing, you need to shift, you need to tuck, and you need to turn. We’re not talking about turning the left hip. We’re talking about turning the left elbow to point at the lead hip when you hit the ball. And I appreciate that with the drills. I told you off camerara like I’ve been so impressed by watching you for all these years and how you come up with new ways to say things and it does. It sticks. I remember videos of yours from like a decade ago with those little catchphrases and we all want simple things we can go golf with. Martin, I’m assuming these three pieces that we’re talking about, the shifting, the tucking, and then the turning. Obviously, these are things that the average golfer would struggle with. In fact, they probably have the opposite of all of these. They probably have hips too far back, maybe the arms too far back, and then the club face too open, right? Yes. Yes. And yes, and yes. I mean, I think one of the reasons you complimented before the camera started rolling said, “Oh, you’re very creative.” And it’s sort of if I am creative, it’s out of necessity, Eric, that I still teach a lot here at the club at Ibis. And you know, if I if I’m not getting results with the people I’m teaching, it’s like I need to do better. I need to explain it better. Um, I hate using long words. I’m not impressed with people who use big long words. I want, you know, shift. I don’t need to talk about your center of mass is moving this way and your your your forces are moving this way. Like, just get your hip over here. How’s that? Yeah. Just get your elbow down here. How’s that? I like to say things that a 10-year-old could understand. And that’s why we appreciate and that’s what makes you a makes you a great coach. I’m going to hit one more, Martin. Shift, tuck, and turn. Yep. Shift, tuck, and turn. as I’m shifting. Obviously, I’m feeling as I’m shifting more weight working into my lead foot. And and and this might be a little bit more advanced, but maybe something we’d talk about in a future video. We probably at some point don’t want to shift and have my head going way forward with it. No, you don’t. You don’t. We We might want to have a shift going where I’m getting my hips forward, my belt buckle working towards my ankle. Maybe my head stays a little more, you know, back over the ball line, but tucking of the arm versus back and then the elbow towards the hip. I love that one. Yeah, I think the elbow to the hip, the left elbow controlling the club face is a very big part of playing good golf. I think if a fairway was one yard wide, you just split that fairway. Eric, Mr. Martin Hall, a I appreciate you being here. This is awesome for me today to be able to work with you. Martin put together an incredible the billion dollar t-shot. things we talked about today, but really the whole the whole game. How to manage yourself off the tea, how to start the swing, how to swing down, how to swing through, all of that’s included for less than the price of one round of golf for you to be able to drive the ball better forever. We all want that. I want you to go grab that. It’s the first link in description down below. And there’s no risk. You get to try it for a full year completely risk- free. Go grab that. Thank you guys for watching.
