Zack Johnson’s incredible round at Augusta, a nostalgic journey, Augusta, Georgia. On a beautiful Saturday at the Masters, Zack Johnson found himself swept up in nostalgia reminiscent of the glory days of his past. The 49-year-old former champion showcased his skills with a stunning performance, carding a remarkable six under 66, his best score ever at Augusta National in 65 rounds. This impressive feat came as a delightful surprise, especially considering he had gone 28 rounds without breaking into the 60s at this prestigious tournament. Johnson, who has often faced challenges with distance on the course, expressed his determination, saying, “I don’t hit the ball far enough to compete on some of these venues, but it doesn’t mean I can’t have a decent finish. It doesn’t mean I can’t make cuts. It doesn’t mean I can’t still do it.” He emphasized that his game has been improving this season and Saturday’s round was a testament to his hard work paying off. After making the cut at two overpar on Friday, Johnson’s third round saw him leapfrog 29 spots on the leaderboard, finishing at four under and tied for 11th place. His remarkable charge began early in the day, starting with a spectacular 41 ft eagle putt at the par 5 second hole. The momentum continued to build as he made back-to-back birdies. Starting at the ninth hole at the iconic par 312 known as Golden Bell, Johnson expertly landed his approach shot from 155 yds within 15 ft, setting up another birdie. He followed this with a strategic layup at Ray Creek, hitting a wedge to just 2 ft for yet another birdie. His patient and calculated approach paid off again at the par 515th where he placed his wedge shot within 3 ft of the hole. One of the highlights of his round came at the par 316th where he skillfully navigated the 170 hole over water, landing his shot just a foot from the pin. Johnson reflected on the challenges of the course, noting, “There are some pins where you’re like, “Okay, I can get after this.” And others where you think, “If I get out of shape here, I’m in trouble.” He managed to secure a par at the tough finishing hole, capping off his best round at the Masters. In 2007, Johnson made history as one of the few champions to finish over par, winning the green jacket by two shots over notable competitors like Ret Gusen and Tiger Woods. However, the past few years have been tough for him, missing the cut in two of the last three masters and not finishing in the top 25 since 2008. His last victory came in a playoff at the 2015 British Open. Johnson credited his success on Saturday to his pairing with John Rom, the champion from two years ago. They inspired each other throughout the round with from finishing at two under 70 despite a couple of late bogeies. Johnson also drew motivation from season players like 67year-old Burnernhard Langanger and 65-year-old Fred Couples who he sees as contemporaries. Both legends face their own challenges in making the cut with Langer missing by just one shot in his final master’s appearance. 100% those are my guys. Those are the ones that you look to, Johnson said, acknowledging the inspiration he draws from their careers, he added. This place can bring out the absolute best in someone, and it starts either taking a left or right down that lane. As he walked down Magnolia Lane, Johnson allowed himself to feel the weight of nostalgia. “Taking somebody down Magnolia Lane for the first time is probably my favorite thing,” he shared. “I’ve seen people cry. Most people are smiling and turning on music. It’s nostalgic. Yet, for whatever reason, you’ve still got to be where your feet are. I’m very happy with the fact that I’m staying present because you can get caught up in all that. It’s really, really [Music]
