The Purdue women’s golf team has made a habit of postseason appearances.
For the 10th straight year, and 27th time in the last 28 years, the Boilermakers will compete in the NCAA Regional, a run that includes the program’s lone national championship in 2010.
Purdue is attempting to reach the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.
The three-day tournament begins Monday at The Rawls Course.
Purdue is seeded seventh in the Lubbock Regional. Last season the Boilermakers overcame a No. 6 seed to finish runner-up in the regional.
Here’s what to know about the Boilermakers heading into the regional in Lubbock, Texas.
Purdue golfer to watch: Natasha Kiel
Senior Natasha Kiel was named second-team All-Big Ten, marking the 29th year in a row a Boilermaker was named to the league’s all-conference team.
Kiel is just the third Purdue women’s golfer in history to win three individual events in a season, joining former NCAA individual medalist and LPGA golfer Maria Hernandez, three-time Olympics qualifier Paula Reto and three-time All-Big Ten honoree Aurora Kan.
Kiel is currently ranked 60th in the country. She leads Purdue with 84 birdies this season and also has two hole-in-ones.
Recapping Purdue women’s golf season
The Boilermakers most recently finished 11th in a loaded Big Ten led by Momo Sugiyama’s 12th-place finish individually. Sugiyama leads the team with a 73.08 18-hole average and has carded a team-low round 11 times this season.
Purdue opened the season by winning the Boilermaker Classic in September and also claimed the Coach Mo Classic in St. Augustine, Florida, last month.
Jasmine Kahler earned a Big Ten Player of the Week honor in March after she tied a program record with a six-under at the Briar Creek Invitational in South Carolina, helping the Boilermakers to a runner-up team finish.
Sugiyama and fifth-year senior Jocelyn Bruch are competing in their third NCAA regional. Bruch scored a hole-in-one at last year’s Las Vegas Regional.
Purdue’s path to NCAA Championships
The top five teams and lowest scoring individual from a non-advancing team in the Lubbock Regional qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Purdue’s competition includes four ranked teams among the 12 in the Lubbock Regional, including No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 18 Arizona and No. 19 Texas A&M.
Other teams in the field include Iowa State, Tennessee, Campbell, UC-Davis, Florida Gulf Coast, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
