In our tenth list review for the 2025 AFL season, we go over some basic projected statistical changes from Collingwood’s 2024 side and what their off-season changes might bring.

The Magpies picked up former Giant Harry Perryman and St Kilda key forward Tim Membrey, they also managed to get exciting draftees Joel Cochran, Charlie Wesr and Will Hayes in the National Draft.

Thanks again legend! Go check out@SwoopLuke if you haven’t before, I hope you enjoy our assessment of the Pies and their list.

  1. It's a funny one for the Pies, all lines struggled at various points last year, but I will say even though the midfield line is the "best" on the video for 2024, I think the drop off in some of those numbers from 2023 to 2024 hurt them a lot. They are a high turnover high clanger team that often get out possesed, with terrible marking and ground ball differential stats. As Swoop mentioned this made a lot of inside 50's pretty average and they where pourous in the midfield despite the offensive minded talent there. This exposed their offensive KPF problems as they couldn't do much with their entries and where forced into tough shots and their defence got exposed from offensive looks they wheren't used to.

I have the Magpies one of two teams (Bulldogs the other) with a "6 spot ladder position swing" with the ranges that I did on my team previews putting them 6th to 12th as a range and just sneaking them into the top 8 by the slimmest of margins for 2025. They where injured a lot and have a preseason to patch up, and I love Membrey to add some forward consistancy and obviously (as much as I cry as a Port supporter) Houston was the best possible patch they could get for their back half ball use woes. However if some of the midfield stats don't improve I can see forward half ball movement teams like Brisbane, Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Sydney all shred them with not too much resistance.

  2. Too many 2024 stats being looked at while ignoring 23 stats…at the end of the day these things are never accurate and there's far more likelihood the Pies will challenge again rather than falling away.

  3. Stats can be incredibly useful and misleading at the same time.

Collingwood is one of those teams who will largely ignore a lot of the 2024 stats given that half the team was injured for significant periods during the season.

Still an interesting discussion, and I think that the team proposed is likely to be close to the starting lineup in any case.

  4. Yeh I agree with Swoop here too Woody, I think Cox isn't in their best 23 and they play McStay as the second option for ruck. Thus allowing for Schultz to play. I have them improving this year on the back of the injury bug not biting as tough as last year. How long does it take you to do the database for each team, sort your numbers out and record each video Woodster?

  5. Collingwood has one last roll of the dice. Could 2025 be the year. I reckon they also need to consider rolling the dice. Move guys around a bit. Even do something to make their side less predictable. Consider playing Darcy Moore in forward half more often and playing a swing man role. Bringing in some youngsters into important roles and freshening up the side and being less predictable.
