In this video I review the Icebug NewRun BUGrip GTX, studded ice running shoes.

I bought the shoe to run the Polar Night Marathon in Tromsø, Norway in January 2025. This video is are my thoughts on the shoe after running the marathon.

  1. Fantastic video. Due to your impressive review, it seems you really, really had a great race. Query: I had bought Norda G+ Spike (Grey/White/Orange colorways, size 9) a while ago based on Troy’s comments. Have used it about 12-15 times last few years (due to snow/ice on roads). Find it lightweight, laces are perfect, carbide spikes still look new. But, am a short, stocky runner. So, curious about your comments on VJ and Norda. Was it the Boa system that tipped the scale to Icebug? Thanks!!!!

  2. I know this is an ice-specific shoe, and this was a very comprehensive review; but 2025 promises to be a huge year for trail shoes, in general. Thanks, Barry.

  3. Another great review Barry, excellent work. It's great to see people covering these more niche shoes, even if they're ones I would not necessarily get for myself. It's very rarely icy where I live, and it tends to last only a day or two when it does ice over, so I could not justify the expense of these (as tempting as it is).

The Boa system sounds ideal for shoes like this, which makes me wonder why you don't see it used more often. I guess it's a lot more expensive than traditional laces. Would you consider buying other shoes with the Boa system?

  4. Great review, I'm not sure there will be many other YouTube reviews of this shoe 😀. I can second your vote for the boa system – i have the boa on my spin shoes and it makes them so easy to on/offboard and adjust for comfort.

  5. Hi Barry, greetings from Indonesia, stumbled on your video likely due to a push from youtube algorithm after watching (and buying) this similar looking shoes https://youtu.be/sKJzq5oCm5E which of course have different material and purposes but only costs 1/10 of it.
