BEDFORD COUNTY, Va (WSET)– — After a successful disc golf championship in Bedford County, one local course is now undergoing some major changes.

Disc golf enthusiasts flooded to Central Virginia this year for the world championships at the Ivy Hill course and New London Tech Disc Golf Course.

In August, Bedford County received grant money to expand the New London Business and Technology Center.

However, those plans meant cutting into the disc golf space.

County Administrator Robert Hiss said they turned to the pros for help.

“The county reached out to the Professional Disc Golf Association and again reiterated our commitment to wanting to have a quality and professional level course here at New London,” Hiss said.

As part of the agreement, holes will be relocated to a new space in a plot at the entrance to the center.

It’s a process Disc Golf Professional and course designer Paul McBeth said is easier said than done.

“The land is unique. It’s a lot more elevation than the original course so there’s a lot of cool aspects in that sense but there’s a lot more woods that we have to navigate through compared to what we previously did,” McBeth said.

McBeth said holes 8-12 will be incorporated into the new design with 4 and 5 turned into holes 16 and 17 at the end.

McBeth designed the original course, so it was important he be involved in the process.

“With having him bring his expertise and his name recognition, I think people will trust that it’s going to be well designed and something that everybody can be proud of,” Hiss said.

“Designing it is a process because you can design it, lay it out, but then they have to go in and do the work and there’s a lot of cutting, a lot of pruning, all sorts of stuff on the land,” McBeth said.

Next year, the world championships will take place in Finland, but in October the New London Tech Disc Golf Course is hoping to host the Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship Finals.
