Watch More Lessons: How To Hit Perfect Iron Shots Every Time – https://youtu.be/WcqwbvdicdE
Excellent video, thanks for your help.
Very interesting will start to practice. Ball position? Normal 7 wood or bit further back?
Thank you for the insight Ed & Patrick , I carry a 7 wood in my bag but have always used a lofted iron and played conservative
Thanks for this video!!! Before I knew anything about evaluating lies, I tried something as stupid as hitting a 6-iron out of 6”-8” rough. I learned a hard won lesson not to hit lower lofted clubs out of the rough.
Thanks for teaching me WHAT TO DO in this situation. How do you recommend people to practice this shot to get a sense for distance?
Great video. You would advise a 7-wood and not a 3-wood because the loft will help it get out?
Very interesting video and makes sense. I have a 7-wood in my bag and it works great for me off of the tee on some holes and in the fairway. But I've never even considered using it out of the rough. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the video!
Close the toe inwards and the rough opens the face at impact.
Don't do it with hybrids or woods
Good lesson.
Great vid. Always great to understand how and why something works …or doesn’t. The hosel ahead of the club face makes perfect sense
I can't see any reason why you would use a ladies club rather than a 4-hybrid. Hybrids are great out of the rough and a lower ball flight too, to run it up the fairway. I used to carry a 7-wood years ago, but they became redundant when hybrids arrived (except maybe for high handicap ladies, who shouldn't be allowed on golf courses anyway). Poor video.
You forgot to point out not all irons are offset.
Ypu can also open your iron face, swing more steeply, etc.
I liked your suggestion to go 'half way'.
I do that regularly when on the fairway if the green is out of range. If the first shot goes half way I use the same club again. More often than not it doesn't so I go up or down a club for my next.
If the grass is very long I pick the shortest path to a good lie, sideways often. I position the ball in line with my right foot and hit down almost vertically with a pitching wedge. It only goes about 20 yards but has rarely failed to get me out.
The leading edge of your hybrid and your 7-wood are positioned about the same in front of the hosel of BOTH clubs. You simply concealed it on the hybrid. I'll continue to use my hybrid for these situations, as it's shorter and I control it better.
My personal favorite is the 5 degree foot wedge……
This is actually really useful information. A lot of these U-toob golf vids that promise 'miraculous' cures for krappy iron shots, don't work. This actually works. Yay.
…is that you ACTUALLY have to hit it from there. Pick it up or use the .75 iron cleat "stinger"… Back to the fairway…and you don't have to hit it from there either. Get you a tee..and a 90* wedge and you deserve whatever happens if you act on this….
I’m a believer now too!! What a great idea. Put the so-called ‘rescue’ club away because it won’t rescue you from this kind of rough lie but using a high-lofted fairway wood is a great idea. It makes perfect sense, as he says. I may even buy a 7-wood just for this very job. Thank you Sensei!
It makes perfect sense! I do have a 7 wood, and I have been hitting it as my go-to club out of the rough, at least, when it's not so deep that I can't use anything other than a wedge. I didn't know why it seemed to work, but now I do. I will definitely try choking down a little to get a smaller circumference circle/steeper angle, and I think that will enable me to hit in even deeper grass without having to go all the way to the wedge. Thanks!
You the man. I did what you said and used a 7 wood in the rough. I couldn’t have hit it better if I tried. I give you an 11 out of 10.
The problem is that virtually all public courses and many private ones do not do a 1st and 2nd cut of rough like the pros get to play out of every day. The first cut is mowed higher than the fairway but lower than the rough – the ball still is very visible and hit-able!
How about hitting out of the woods? I'm always there🤣🤣
The Callaway Big Bertha woods from the 1990’s, with warbird sole, work well from in the rough. At least they do for me.
What was the club you mentioned along with the Cobra Baffler? It sounded like Jensi or Gensi.
"The rough is 6 to 8 inches" . The guys ankles are still above the grass. 3 inches in spots. US open rough isn't even that high.
0:15 "This is not a greenside shot, if we are in the fairway…" Um… if we are in the fairway, we do not need to worry about hitting out of the rough!!!!!
Good video.
I have an 11 wood, will try using it more out of the rough
I've not had so much luck with fairways out of the rough but I don't choke down that far. Will have to give it a try but it seems I would have to open the face a bit too to compensate for the upright face.
Thankiuu !
You just blew my mind.
What about attack angle dude… This is crazy lol
That's a great tip, pro. Awesome!
Ive got a question. Trying to fill out my set with some thrift finds based on this tip and some others for other clubs. I was looking for a 7 wood and i ended up with an old wooden 7 wood and a 22° loft 5 wood (arnold palmer oversized arnie's own, i understand the 22 loft is a bit gigher than standard for a 5 wood so i thought it might work). Which would serve me better out of the rough with the situation you're describing in this video?
Seems like the powers that be are trying to get all of us to buy 7 woods this year. Kinda like the paint and fashion industry saying 'this is the in color this year'.
Yes use the club with the most ground contact to hit out of the thickest grass. This guy is a dumbass
My Adam’s #3 & #4 hybrid leading edge is beyond the hosel as your 7-wood.
Horses for courses , different rough requires a different approach .
I do agree that a wood ( i only carry a five ) is usually better than a hybrid from long leaf grabby grasses , however if you have duvet fescue you are not getting any wood or hybrid in there ever , that requires a hosel first iron with force , swampy rough will also laugh at a wood but accepts a fast aggressive iron .
Yeah my 5 wood works well out of rough, my 5 hybrid, unless its sitting up is a crap shoot.
Its funny how hybrids are called rescue and you should think they are the correct out of rough and fairway woods only works out of the fairway
This is EXACTLY why I cant play a hybrid to save my life but I monster my AI Smoke 7 wood…. but now I finally know WHY, THE FREAKING OFFSET.
Thank you for addressing this " cause I've differently have been challenged by that sitting position…😅THANKS..!!!
Look for the average golfer stop trying to make that hero shot out of the rough. Just take a lofted club 8,9,pw etc and get it back into the fairway. Wedge it on, two putt take your bogey and move on. Even scratch players often take this approach.
I’m going to get a 7 wood Cobra Baffler, very inexpensive on line
