Robert MacIntyre made a 22-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 3-under 67 to win the Scottish Open, becoming the first Scot in 25 years to win his national open. Colin Montgomerie in 1999 was the last Scot to win the Scottish Open.
MacIntyre won for the second time this year, having earlier captured the Canadian Open – the fourth-oldest championship in golf — last month. He will head to Royal Troon feeling as chuffed as ever and knowing that it has been over a century since a British player won at Troon.
Adam Scott finished second, just a shot behind MacIntyre while French player Romain Langasque occupied the third spot.
📌 Rory Struggles With Short Game: Rory McIlroy’s ball-striking was good enough to win the Genesis Scottish Open, but the putter was a different story. McIlroy hovered around the lead for most of the week at The Renaissance Club, but his 14-under total was four short of winner Robert MacIntyre.
McIlroy ranked second in the field in both Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green. He ranked No 63 in the field in putting, though – and the fact that he had an outside chance at the title heading into the final few holes Sunday, then, was a testament to his ball-striking.
McIlroy will now head to Royal Troon where he’ll have one final chance in 2024 to snap a major-championship winless drought that currently spans 10 years.
