Early extension is killing your consistency.
It causes your arms to get stuck behind your body and forces your torso to raise up through the hitting zone.
In this golf lesson, PGA golf pro Kerrod Gray and Martin Chuck demonstrate how to fix early extension by creating more depth to your hip turn to get you hitting better golf shots.

early extension is killing your consistency it causes your arms to get stuck behind your body and forces your torso to raise up through the Hitting Zone so in today’s video I’m going to show you how to fix it by creating some more depth to your hip turn let’s get stuck in okay man we’ve got a great reference here for creating sufficient hip turn throughout the golf ensuring getting enough depth and we’re not Falling Towards the golf ball right dynamic balance m really big deal okay you see you know you always see my t- score in the ground when I do my videos um you know so we have a bunch of holes in this thing and and one of the easy things is just simply you know with the extra aim sticks is just to feel can I get my heels against the aiming bar and feel my buns just kind of gently against those vertical sticks because what a lot of people do is they’ll sit back yeah and then dynamically the first move they’ll make is to find their dynamic balance now the golf ball is too close to them but the supercomputer makes makes you fit it in to hit a shot yeah and then you’re very unreliable yeah so creating that you know getting in that nice balanced position is a huge deal in golf so really important to be able to move the club dynamically without messing with that space where the golf ball is and exactly space is the key word there isn’t it so if you set up I want you to demonstrate a player who is sitting too far back on their heels and then where they would run out of space you know so they’ll be they might feel very very solid in this situation right so I’ve got my heels purposely too far forward y their buns are back and now what the brain’s genius is because now when you start to move you’re not going to stay here you’re going to f you’re going to basically encroach on this area that we’ve got the golf ball in now you’re kind of going to miss the golf ball and so what do we do we have a situation where dynamic balance actually made things worse cuz now we’re close to the golf ball yeah we’ve got to fit this in usually by backing up to create room or by letting the left elbow chicken wing a little bit yeah big time okay so when I help golfers with this I said okay you’re going to probably feel like you’re a little bit more in your toes I’ll give them a simple sensation of being able to heel tap MH so the gentle heel Taps tend to get my hip joint knee joint ball my feet a little bit more organized rather than my hip behind my heels yeah for sure for sure okay so that’s a big deal for me and then so having people set up like this now they have some place to like you say create room on the way down create this space now the golf ball’s in a place that it’s e to get rather than start back here thrust forward and feel like you have to hand save it by running out a right arm and uh when you set up to that golf ball I want you to just demonstrate the player who’s sitting too far back the heels I just want to make note of a couple of things here for you guys so the player’s hips are back number one you’ll see that the uh the front of the The Shins here is quite vertical straight up and down you’ll see a lot of professional golfers or most have a slight sort of uh incline to the way that they would have that set now as you then set up again mutton for would a lot of they they byting in this position you can kind of let your arms hang out from away from you but that also increases tension through your arms doesn’t it totally your arms are extended away from your body can hit it yeah this is a very tough position to be able to move in an efficient and athletic manner right so these little heel Taps that Martin does as he sets up to it that just gives some awareness and I like to get the feeling of going to extreme of like what is it like to be all the way on my toes what is it like to be on my heels move those feet up up and down a little bit you can see that we start to find our Natural Balance point which is very very c yeah so you know I’ve got two sticks kind of on my rear here and the sense is on the way back can I push into the ground feel this one push the stick back a little bit then there’s my relocation then can I get the other stick to push back out of the way and create that room yeah so the student can you know student can do this pretty slowly kind of push hit some shots and even if like a subtle M hit that’s okay because when we’re we’re not necessarily worried about the outcomes in the training and trying to build in this you know these New Sensations for people because if they’re not used to this look they’ve been here for 15 years of their golfing the golf club into it yeah why would they have to unload it because they have no room so they figure out a way to get the club on the ball yeah and that’s their best version of themselves at that moment and so through coaching we try to say hey here’s some here’s some really athletic ways to be to be in a place where we can you know get into a side Bend with some extension create room to have some control the golf club phase rather than something that has to be flashy with a running out of right arm yeah and understanding that training there being slow and very considered with the way you go about these exercises mapping out the fields in a methodical manner is very important we don’t want to just do this for the first time get a huge big bucket of balls and rapid fire over and over and ever again do we no no it’s you know it’s slow methodical I’d even say can you do it with your eyes closed like the sensation of what’s like my eyes are closed what’s it like to feel that new position settling in what impact might feel like this is where a coach might help position you a bit so you go oh okay this is what that feels like open the Open the Eyes do something kind of slow let the ball get in the way drw that stke no this stops to the races I love that so the is at home uh you can grab one of these training devices here uh meantime you can get yourself a couple of stickstick on the ground and just use that as a reference for sure just when you do put the sticks in there guys just make sure that you’re not sitting too far back on your heels there you made mention of the dynamic balance from a dress and then into the back just talk about it in the follow-through as well and for players being okay with having a bit of weight on the outstep of their front foot when they finish huge deal had a very good you know online lesson online student good golfer but just kind of stuck in this toe can’t continue the rotation up the chain things have to flash out a little suddenly so it’s like learning how to feel like that sense of getting pressure back on the lead side but it’s okay to let this InStep this left in my case my left InStep my lead InStep go to the outside of my foot as though I can drop a golf club because that’s what helps my glute stay back to create that room so pressure would be pushing to the top goes to the toe then then my weight’s going to circle into the heel before I go to that finish and like you said I want to feel like I can crease the grass with the outside of my left foot I don’t want to be flat flippy I want to crease and extend yeah and certainly a common Trend through all the videos that we’ve shot here today guys and make sure you check those out is all around making sure that you are moving in a dynamic fashion we don’t want to be stuck like a statue over the golf ball and not moving we want to finish like one in a very nice tall poised position like this but to be able to do that to have that flow that sequence that you see with your favorite player who slushes the ball gets those crispy iron shots you need to make sure that you’re moving in a dynamic fashion so Martin’s going to roll one off one more Y and show us how it’s done nice crispy strike beautiful look guys mchu out here at the Raven Sensational advice on how to move in such a manner that can improve your ball striking thanks for watching this video YouTube thinks that you would benefit from watching this one next so click that card and it could be the tip that you need to take your game to the next level I’ll see you next time
