In today’s video we put Costco’s $100 Kirkland Signature wedges up against
custom wedges made by Artisan Golf which cost just north of $900.

We just made a mini doc about Artisan and you can check that out here:

all right so I have been waiting for this day for a long time because not only do I have here custom fitted $11,000 wedges that I can’t wait to try they got my name on them I haven’t even seen them yet but I also went out this morning and I picked up some non-custom wedges for a little over $100 so we’re going to compare the difference between these two this is the th000 wedge set versus the $100 wedge set the other cool thing about this is that we get a chance to practice 100 yards an inn which is personally one of the weakest parts of my game so I’ve been practicing a lot I have a bit of a new wedge swing this is going to be a big deal in terms of getting to and breaking Pinehurst for the US Open which is coming out soon Francis is back Francis come on down see you to see thank you Francis we’re going to use the scientific method to really understand the difference here the first step in the scientific method is State the problem the problem is are these wedges 5 to 10 times better than these let’s find out fair enough yeah form a hypothesis what is your hypothesis based on the little that we know we haven’t seen the clubs we haven’t touched them but we know one is custom fitted to my body and 5 to 10 times as much as the others let’s say that this should perform three times three times than that one okay yeah yeah fair enough spin rates uh consistency of your strike and then feel number three of the scientific method is make observations that’s where I come in that’s easy to do and the final step in the scientific method perhaps the most important is to form a conclusion we want to conclude which one’s better game at the end of the video so you need to watch the entire video look that’s me doing my Rick Shields first off I’ve never seen the wedges yeah okay which ones do you want to see more this is going to look so much better like after you open this okay cool let’s open up these first all right cool oh my God are we really I just found out we’re giving away an i mini what’s the value of that it’s like five grand we’re giving away an i mini hold on let’s rip these apart and try not to litter this is clearly modeled after Aoki pretty surprised haven’t gotten a lawsuit yet on this one cuz we all know they got a lawsuit on the irons brand new wedges they are carbon steel probably not forged right mil face okay bokis are forged bokis are forged yeah there’s going to be a big difference in feel there for sure now I mean there’s nothing wrong with cast clubs you can still make cast clubs soft it’s just it’s just it’s different and you’ll know when you when you hit it you know oh we have a gnl AKA 5256 60 I have a feeling like one of the big differences we’re going to be looking at here since I don’t play those numbers without further Ado The Artisan box oh my God look at that they all signed it what sweetie pies thank you so much for your friendship and the work that you do so very well first difference they didn’t write that on the Kirkland Box made in Fort Worth Texas so if you don’t know about Artisan please go back and watch the film that came out just before this which is essentially a story of the team at Artisan that originated out of the ashes that was known as the Nike oven first thing we’re going to notice here is we’ve got golf fried dual compound grips my favorite grips shaft pretty stiff those shafts are not stiff would you say no these feel these feel very light yeah soical so if you’re a real player you’re probably not even entertaining these but just so you know those are regular Flex these are stiff to extra stiff also the weighting is different the other big difference cosmetically in this club is we’ve got personalization on the wedge which is something really fun that you know you might want to do as you get further into the game of golf in the beginning this going to be a great set for you if you’re getting started you’re trying to put your set together so in summary first main observations obviously better quality forged raw faces personalized specialty shafts and Specialty grips and then here we got you know a nice set of clubs for good price so now we’re going to test the 52° Kirkland Against The 49° Artisan I’m looking at the red flag that’s our line here so just for me I set up a little bit open on wedges and uh we’ll see what we get here I’m really so what I would be thinking here is like 100 yards what what was that divot what was that divot like to you uh very toe heavy oh man I mean that I hit it a little bit behind the ball but still really wants to dig into the turf that was definitely one of your better strikes for sure it a better swing overall yeah right so this is the equivalent of the gap wedge here oh man already feels like we’re in a real plane you know what I mean I mean a little skinny but got a lot more yardage out of that that’s oh man we were coming off at 26° and that thing is all I mean it’s definitely 3° stronger the wedge itself mhm se you swing this a little bit faster that’s the main thing like I swung faster yeah this looked like it’s you swung it faster that is right online with that flag I mean that literally split the flag this is nice you had 117 yards there at carry yeah your attack angle was down a lot it was like down like 9° which is it’s great you know we want to see a downwards attack angle to get the spin that you want cuz spin can be your friend with wedges what’s funny is the attack angle was the same amount down but the divot is way Chiller exactly yeah exactly yeah I’ve got I’ve got divot problems with the uh with the Costco Edge that’s that’s observation number one that good yeah you got a little bit more yardage there for carry and you didn’t swing as hard yeah that was nice I think you getting that compression that we were looking for you can be a lot more efficient with that type of Swing so we haven’t really been using real golf ball yet we’re using kind of hard range balls but if you look this is the Kirkland divot pattern and that’s the Artisan divot pattern so already these divots are flat this one is very tow heavy so one of the biggest problems with the Costco Edge at first glance is chaotic divots and if you’ve ever seen chaotic divots on a range uh you know turn around walk away uh tell someone call someone Okay cool so let’s get some real balls in here let’s see what this feels like oh man 114 carry 92 mph swings our club at speed that launched a little low a little thin okay 10,000 RPMs MH let’s hit one with the 52 and see how many RPMs we can get on that how’d that feel pretty good that was 100 that 100 8500 spin 27 a little so 272 degre of launch angle there you got spin the spin was nice look at the divot I don’t know if this is because it’s not fitted yeah or what but that is just it’s just cutting into the turf I think the one of the most important things too when you’re hitting wedges is like how does it feel when it goes to the ground and we talked about that with the range balls yeah this just not matching up with no with the numbers that I kind of want to hit the 49 again a couple times cuz I mean ostensibly the 49 should be like harder to hit if if if the logic is higher lofted clubs are easier to hit oh that was my best one just a half a yard draw nice and low you’ve been consistent with your spin it’s always been right around 10,000 which is awesome yeah going to hit a full version of the 49 here I’m expecting this to probably go 128 that was nice I mean you exceeded your expectation you’re at 131 on that one that’s yeah 131 little draw let’s try to full one with the uh with the with the old uh Kirkland I mean that felt great actually but it did go miles into the air yeah that that was one of your higher ones that was that was 30 just over 30° 30° with 1,000 less RPM mhm all right so right now we’re going to test the two lob wedges at the yellow flag a which is 70 yards nice yeah I mean you want to hit it 70 right you had it 60 68 good number that ball 4,000 spin that’s quite low it’s it’s low it’s low and the launch angle was not ideal that was like 42° 42 yeah we want that we want we want it down we want to come down yeah we want mid3 yeah we dropped that launch angle down a little short yeah just a reminder here folks I’m not the iron Byron that was crisp yeah nice Coco Crisp right there little short but that was sick that sounded really good that was 66 now here’s the thing like out of you know four or five shots you hit two really good ones but we still didn’t get the Back Spin that we want we didn’t get the launch angle we wanted I can’t get the ball down yeah I feel like I’ll be able to get this down for some reason I’m interested in seeing the divot pattern now with this one you’re not trying toate I mean I me that’s just immediately on the number you just got 5,000 more RPMs with that club and you launched at 36 which is really what we so it launched five at least 5 degrees lower and we immediately got 2,000 more RPM so the ball’s going to be less affected by wind and it’s going to stop when it hits the green so for me a lob wedge a 60° wedge is is really comes into play at around you know 60 70 for me that’s like the immediate kind of like okay wow like that’s the difference between the two like I couldn’t get that one down was struggling to even find you know Square contact that could be this yeah there’s a huge difference in the Sha I mean that that Tempo was smooth I’ll just say it that Kirkland was just a little clunky before we go do short game here first of all take a peek at this like I kind of love this I’m loving this like obviously OB we’re talking about two different things here the the black versus the Chrome but you can see the dimples inside of the grooves that’s where miraan likes you to hit the ball a little bit inside the combination of allergy season and corrected Vision means I can’t always wear my contacts on the golf course I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rushed home after a round of golf desperate to take out my contacts that’s why I’m happy to say this video is brought to you by a company I’m a huge fan of sport RX since 1996 sport RX has equipped thousands of faces with custommade prescription eyewear and the eyewear isn’t designed just for golf their Opticians are experts at pairing the right frame and the right lens for Whatever Gets You Outdoors whether it’s fishing or cycling or running snowboarding even Motocross sport RX has you covered me personally I went with the glasses that will best fit me on the golf course the first pair that I picked up was the Oakley thos with the prism golf l lenses these lenses boost contrast and definition so I can better read The Contours of the green they also help me with following the ball in the air which is something that I’ve struggled with in the past wearing sunglasses and I also got these sport RX kodas these are glasses made by sport RX they were made for golf and my lenses change tint when I move in and out of the shade and probably my favorite glasses that I’ve ever owned are the ones I’m wearing right now they’re the one Moons by article one and inside of these frames I got lenses that transition from clear to dark dark brown depending on lighting conditions they have an anti-glare coating which is super helpful for my astigmatism so if you have an astigmatism definitely go with anti-glare eyewear like I said I’m a huge fan of this company there’s a link in the description that will take you to their website check them out and back to the video okay so we’re going to head down to the short game area to get some bunker shots and some chips so what are you looking for from a from a bunker shot here both wedges here you have the 60 right they’re pretty much the same Loft um the main thing we’re looking for here is how the grind interacts with the sand Texas we get different kinds of different kind of buckers pretty much we get a little more firm um a little more firm sand uh we don’t get the fluffy type of bunkers I’d love to see what these two grinds do as they make contact we got brand new balls which will be really nice in the bunker here too to get a real idea of spin cuz that’s so important yeah on your way out of the bunker so cool all right we’ll do three and three see which one performs better we’re doing the tight pin here there you go that was nice yeah it’s going to be hard to beat what do you feel it felt like I maybe was a little heavy or something it felt like the club wanted to dig further into sand you know obviously operator error is always part of this show nice even better than the first one that is maybe a great I had no problems with that in the bunker but let’s remember like bunker shot not a full shot um consistency of the shafts not really as important and the you know what you’re interacting with the sand is pretty much always the same as opposed to Turf right yeah I say so I do like the wide flange here especially out of the bunker out of softer bunkers so depending where you are maybe this would be a good bunker like you said for beginners that don’t know how to hit down on it right yeah the artist out of the bunker excited a little bit nervous let’s see how this goes [Music] wow wow it’s very different out of the sand okay um I mean the ball jumped up way faster M and what’s funny is this is 59 so it’s a degree less of Loft but that thing popped out of the sand it feel pretty smooth there so smooth so smooth it just felt like taking a bat into a plate of stew you know just like bam what kind of stew beef yeah so what’s for dinner yeah yeah I mean that’s the dude if I can make that my text message ringtone that’s such a good sound it actually sounds very different and and I think that’s more a feature of Bounce MH and then also you’ve got all these little relief points which like you when you look at a wedge you’re not thinking like oh there’s like a little bit ground down here and here and here but like in this example I’m I’m noticing the impact and and honestly I don’t think I ever have before cuz I’ve never really I’m not a club tester we don’t do Club reviews all right last one I’ll be honest with you folks I’m looking to hold it hold it I mean there’s a big difference just with the two clubs that you had in your hand like as soon as you put this in your hand you hit three amazing shots so yeah you definitely felt better over that one and the effort to simplify this film so that it doesn’t take us a month to shoot and it doesn’t take you 3 months to watch we’re going to hit three three so first Kirkland we’re also going to hit the 60 That’s my kind of around the green kind of Club let’s see how it goes okay kind of rolled out little bit didn’t sound as like Smooth through that it wasn’t the best contact in the world better yeah go in that was pretty good woo I like that you played around with different face angles there too the first one was more Square yeah now you’re cutting through the grass a little bit better with that one opened it up oh man this just feels like aing tank dude I don’t know if you guys are gun owners out there but this feels like a gun I don’t know it’s I don’t have a gun so what’s funny about that one is that was Heavy mhm think that’s one thing a lot of amateurs are out there watching and probably saying like I usually hit B first I hit down on it right like what you do really well and I’ll I comment on this a lot of times when I see you play is that you like to return the club with a more neutral Loft so you play that higher softer shot yeah so that’s great like you can get away with that bounce of a shot set not a lot of spin there not hitting it very hard all right it’s going to take some work I think going to take some work I got to hold this one as far as the short shots are concerned they’re both good clubs you know you could sort of buy the Kirkland set and you know just use figure out to you could use a couple of the clubs or something but as far as short game and stuff like that you don’t really notice a lot of the major differences better players will notice the difference but I think I’m not even quite good enough to notice the difference as far as short game’s concerned I mean give it a give it a few more days practicing with that I mean that’s that’s going to be a lot more you can utilize this a lot more yeah different ways this one for sure for sure that was sick the Flop father all right should we try the Flop with the the Kirkland too let’s see all right well the the Kirkland flops a little better so this has been super interesting thank you for joining me and adding you know some some virtue to the scientific method nice as far as forming a conclusion uh where do you stand as far as the difference between these $100 wedges and $900 wedges well we saw physically like the divots were just inconsistent the strike was inconsistent you really had to try with this wedge whereas with the Artisan it was a little bit more smooth more consistent with the divot not as not as steep not as deep and you didn’t have to try as hard to get the distance that you wanted yeah now I think there’s a whole another side of this too that kind of ties into like the mental aspect of the wedge and that’s why it’s so customized to the player which one do you feel more confident with yeah good point besides the data like just looking down I feel like you seem more confident with the other one for me it’s an interesting story because you know obviously I like this one better right uh that’s been clear throughout the video but obviously it’s made for me and it has a lot of personal touches that I prefer and also need and it’s not that I don’t like the Kirkland wedge I like the concept of it my opinion though is actually there’s a third option out there and and if you’re interested in golf and you can’t afford this or you don’t feel like it’s worth it for you which is totally fair I would say don’t get these I would say go to a garage sale go to your golf store in your town and buy used wedges because there’s a lot of great wedges out there that are going to perform way better than this I would say go get used wedges and put new grips on them and get a nice Groove cleaner and use it in between shots that’s probably going to have more of an impact than this this is really a beginner’s wedge it looks like a vogi but it really isn’t and um that’s not just because of the head it’s because of the whole system so I would recommend going to the in between getting a used wedge if that’s really why you’re watching this video but if you’re not watching the video for that this gets my vote even though it’s about as much as a full set of clubs but we shouldn’t be surprised there either I almost forgot hit the QR Square here to win one of these where does it say im mini I mini right there you got the it’s right there for you it actually sounds really really musical that’s the sound of everyone clicking on the QR Square yeah so just uh send over your phone number we’ll send you one of these we’ll pick one lucky winner at the end of the month to pick up an IM mini uh big thanks to unicor and we’re excited to see you on the Mt scramble tour and of course always if you’re in Austin or if you want to connect with Francis online Beyond Golf performance dude that was fun that was fun thank you thank you thank you we used to think that golf was a game for stuffy old dudes with Argyle pants or that golf courses were just a great place to make out but over the years we found that golf is actually an adventure whether you play in your backyard yard or thousands of miles [Music] away so when we set out to make a club we didn’t look around at what everyone else was doing we made it for us for everyone join random golf club for events tournaments and Golf Course 1. To be fair, if your first name was Kirk or your last name was Kirkland…wouldn't the box set would be one step closer to custom. Riiiiight?

    Great video EAL!

  2. Who is that guy and why is he trying to make you spend more money? I did not see much difference…

  3. I wonder how well the Kirklands would perform with a better shaft. Dynamic Gold S300s or even Apollo shafts are not very expensive and reshafting might solve some of the contact issues you were having and improve the swing feel. Those stock shafts are probably meant for a slower swing speed player. I personally struggle with a lot of off the rack wedges because they are too light and whippy. As a result, the release is hard to control and contact is inconsistent. Stiffer, heavier wedges are just more consistent. A lot of tour players have heavier wedges as well. Thankfully, reshafting irons / wedges with steel shafts is relatively easy to do. Alternatively, you could partner with a local custom club maker to reshaft them, get the flex profile, total weight, length, lie, and swing weight to be similar to the more expensive wedges, then retest. I highly doubt you would end up spending $900 to refit those wedge heads. A follow-up video would be great to see and perhaps spark an interesting adventure into the world of custom clubs (Maltby, etc.).

  4. 95% of golfers should be using a cavity back wedge. 99% can game the Kirkland and still chunk it the same.

  5. Feel bad for the guys at The Artisan for having their clubs compared against Costco Kirkland and seeing very similar results. Damn… that's brutal. Those guys at The Artisan were so cool—and just hard-working, God-loving good ol' American boys—more of what this country needs.

  6. Well right off the bat those carbon steel artisan are forged and those #Titleist Vokeys are absolutely not forged at least here in the US. Carry on.

  7. Cut the BS man, they play very similar. You also misinform saying the vokeys are forged? LOL you don't know what you are saying and are comparing two different wedges that play very similar. One is just better looking than the other.

  8. QR Code not working? Just linking to website but no mention of a contest? Artisan wedges looks amazing, but damn, what a price. I'll prob pass :p

  9. Interesting. I bought some of the original Kirkland wedges (just for fun) and they spin like crazy. I tested them against Vokey's (and a few others) and they (Kirks) were spinning significantly more. My only real complaint(s) are the grips feel too thin, and the they are super shiny, so they can blind you on a sunny day. But performance was as good or better than the more expensive brands, and they feel fine. Also, pretty sure Vokey's are not forged 🤔 I kind think you talked yourself (likely subconsciously) into the result you found. You definitely seemed to swing the expensive clubs with more speed and confidence.

  10. As I watch the Women’s US Open, I think the next Breaking should be where they play. As a 4 handicap I always think I could do ok, but I am delusional! I want to see how much they dominate golf vs us hacks.

  11. The Kirklands are 10 percent the cost and play 90 plus percent as well Artisan clubs(which are fully customized to your swing). The three reasons I could think of to get the Artisan's would be to support American manufacturing, if your game is at the collegiate level or better, or you just like the idea of nice looking clubs.

  12. The only difference between the wedges are price, but it sounded like you had already had a conclusion to the test before you started.
Not many people will pay a grand for wedges.
Manufacturers already price gouge the general public to pay for the tour pros.
So, price to performance, the Kirkland wedges win, just replace the grips.

  13. I wanted som takomo wedges but if your tall like me can't play off the rack wedges . Divot is bigger because the shafts are regular flex. If I some how got a set of artisan wedges I'd never hit them lol I wouldn't want to destroy them
