t- shots K away first look where Jordan’s hit at 321 with a driver but the angle at that pin with the shoulder kicking into it from the right side is going to make it so awkward even from a good lie we’ll see what the golfing gods have given him [Music] look at discussion with Mark Karen say KY and downwind makes it all the more difficult to judge this I wouldn’t think you can get a close drawing and You’ think the favorite shot here would be left or right started a sort of left half of green and try and cut one in get as much spin as possible he’s on the up slope which is a little bit of help probably hit it to 2 feet now yeah that’s the difficulty when you trying to cut it down then off an UPS slope launches higher a little more Spin and a little bit shy he knew that on the Dance Floor to the much more experienced Henrik Stenson [Music] [Applause] oh dear Jord beace Li put your phes down please not sure what the issue here is if somebody kicked it by mistake or nudged it but getting a ruling I wonder must have been nudged by somebody if he’s taking a drop you don’t know the exact phph while taking shot position where it was so you take a drop I think one of the marshals We Believe Trot on the ball but he’s got a drop well it’s in a better position he can see the back of the ball now T yes looks like there’s some sort of low brambly type strands growing there they’ll be quite wiry so you’ll try and maybe catch this a little on the upswing get it coming in high and soft down the wind well I’ll tell you what well that was that was probably the plan then with a drive know I’m going to get it far enough down there that if I miss the Fairway I can go with a very short on and try and get some control but he did have a break there yes very much a good break well have a look who we got here two-time open Champion Ernie Ells birdie put at the first oh he hasn’t lost it he did for a while with a putter but so good to see Theodore Ernest else holding them again that’s so nice nicely [Applause] hold at five one under Justin Rose birdie at the 12th the PA three get there get [Applause] there Dead online back good Pine open Champion doesn’t it have a nice ring birdie putt go on oh yes they walking with him in practice rounds I think two things caught my attention Dom he’s not as tall as I thought he was you know looking into the STA thereafter he’s 6 feet but he’s got that Adonis sort of physique he looks about 65 but strong as an ox Justin Thomas will have learned something from the speed of Justin Rose’s Pat but didn’t act on it also shorten the Jaws makes his three Thomas stays at one under par at theid is is not good at all I hope I hope they get it two puts would be good here for Kim 13 thef umbrella going to be up you’re going toare gloves it could be one of those horrible days like we saw back in 200 US app it’s going to come from the right initially will it come back I don’t think so I think he’s just under that shoulder coming off the right hand bunker ah I’m surprised he hasn’t got his green jacket on I thought he wore it to bed and why wouldn’t you Sergio master champion [Applause] one of the most popular wins I think in recent times so so long overdue I think a lot of people fancy him this week right y he’s certainly the ball Striker isn’t he so there’s a lot of weight off those shoulders walking around a little lighter playing alongside Jason day who along with Adam Scott Mark lean are carrying the Australian hopes yeah I think that lack of a major was a huge weight on his shoulders his his whole demeanor is changed now his whole bearing has it certainly has spe for birdie an unlikely birdie after the t- shot 12T fresh off the birdie at 11 here Brooks Capt cup of into this swing wasn’t get away the up to 13 again and this time it’s Henrik Stenson trying to get it to 200 hold on tried the tius to get [Applause] back four there at 13 will never harm you that’s for sure still the two paries to come for Stenson 15 and 17 to try and take advantage of so it’s Garcia Jason day and Zack Johnson the 2015 open Champion about to get their first round on the way this is game number 35 on the te from the USA Zack Johnson also Master’s Champion has a particular way of doing things and he does it very effectively that Tower [Applause] a little unlucky should have kicked straight back out to the the faway but on the tea from Australia Jason day well he’s admitted it’s been the major championship but you struggled the most with the open he did have a sniff at St Andrews in 2015 he’s such a high ball hitter so really got to learn to knock the ball down to have success here at the Open Championship there’s no doubt he’s got the talent [Applause] on the tea from Spain Sergio Garcia he’s had a few close calls hasn’t he at the Open Championship I suppose most memorably maybe at carti in 2007 missed out to Podrick Harrington who then came and won here the following year good [Music] round oh not the opening t- shot that was looking for that 1999 PGA Championship that he chased tiger home at Madina in Chicago as a 19-year-old I think people thought we all thought that he’d have multiple majes under his belt by this time kka a PA 3 12th two in a row and tied for the lead as well he moves to three under 188 for Jordan SMI just backing off it they can’t feel the breeze back there but it’s pretty strong straight across them Marshall just wanders across theway trying to get him out of the way see missed the green a mile sorry Jamie the Marshall that’s in the way he thinks it’s the crowd and it’s him can’t miss him in those jackets can you they begin the hurry up by the referee as well hole and a half ago this group so they don’t need any extra holdups that’s for sure good shot there from speet there’s only been six birdies here at 14 today which is surprising cuz the pin position is in the perfect spot on the green to be able to ride the ball on the the wind yeah it’s a difficult path three this is the hail air wi hle is it yes it is yeah you’re probably were you playing then yeah back in ‘ 83 yeah remind me what happened there great well Ann had about a 2 or 3 in popped a tap in for his power and he walked up and had a swipe at it and totally whiffed it and tapped in for bogy we’ve all done it but not in that situation Lenny Watkins made an art form of that it sets up well for Sten in this shot as you say he can aim it down the right let the wind bring it into the flag it’s it’s getable this flag all the bunkers are short of this green Oh My My My that is properly shortsighted tough tough mhot to get that anywhere close Andrew Johnston known of course as beef third shot at the sixth [Applause] wait for it there we go much needed birdie as well he’s just a big teddy bear isn’t he he does children’s parties on weeks off oh he’s a character absolute be when you talk salt of the earth characters there it is right there folks what you see is what you get first hole Sergio in the rough see the ball at the moment looked like it finished right in the middle of a lettuce just waiting for Zack Johnson the bottom of your screen to go first very quick swinging American that was a bit of a misjudgement now a very difficult third coming up [Applause] just a question of how much bat he can get on ball here far he can advance it [Applause] about as much bad as the English got on the ball in the last test W hey woohoo oh a bit of a low blow just what we expect from you Aussies this was just a brutal lie you can see him just holding on for dear life through there and even with his power right foot off the ground just had a swish at it really literally a hdden hope you just hope it comes out with a a fly pitches short and runs up there but it didn’t happen good second shot here at 11 for Han and in for birdie two under well take taking advantage of his late call up with Brent Snus withdrawal last night here’s Rose second to 13 well worked out you have to guess a little bit how much it’s got how much Top Spin going to come out with then work out your landing area take the wind into account I’d say he got that quite right to 14 and seu Kim oh will come well that was a short while ago actually where we saw Kim standing on the te’s played his shot and like Stenson he’s in this green side bunker at 14 Jam is down there oh we’re just hearing that Kim is actually in the bunk of a two he was in heavy rough and couldn’t get away with the sound stening away first and it wasn’t a great line again the shoulder so many of these greens have you have little shoulders feeding off the bunkers and I think he just got the wrong side of the crest of it Kim better lie still not easy though hasn’t dropped a shot yet he’ll have to hold this one if he wants to keep that sequence going CL very nearly did yeah there are certain sides of the green and certain bungers that you almost want to put an X through when you look at the pin positions in your yardage book that was one of them don’t go in that one but what a shot Kim’s come up with rose at 13 after a brilliant shot from the left rough and couldn’t capitalize spe just that 20 to 25t range that he absolutely adores and every time you think of the statistic that he holds one in four from there you think that can’t be right he drains another one the moves ahead once again at the top of the leaderboard speed to four under one ahead of palter and kka and two par fives in the next three holes back of the first green D the only one with a chance for a birdi in this group although it’s a huge outside chance power would be nice get two puts kick your round off to a solid start and it’s got to keep tracking just the length you don’t like on the first green you hold it happy days I’m cutting nicely from 4 feet but you miss one of those on the first green and somehow it sets the tone for the day or often it does ankle high boots short trousers just come out of the gym Brooks ke oh release beautiful shot he’s had a rest since the US Open but he hasn’t lost anything every chance of three in a row there for kka as we go to Garcia par out at the first he s of smother hook that opening t- shot didn’t he and it was trouble from there on in ston for hit it Henrik been he’s been shy all day the entire day the only one that he got past the hole was on 12 when Tony said that it’s really slow up there P pet of Zack Johnson trusty old Seymour pter that served him so well over the years but the stroke looked good might have just read a bit of left to right in it there wasn’t any [Applause] it’s interesting look for the golf course we too old for that look right do you think uh get with the times Tony come on yeah riy F has sported that look I think he was the first to do so wasn’t he spe knock him one down the far five 15th every man and his dogs been in this position here at 12 we’ve only seen one hole [Applause] at stenum with a driver at [Music] [Applause] 15 well when you see Stenson hit ones like that you wonder why he doesn’t use the driver a bit more often quality strike from him let’s go to Justin Rose t-shot at 14 oh it’s doing the Wall of Death Around that the bunker and it’s on the downslope that is just horrible yeah he knows it as well down slope awkward stance so spe by one from polter and kka Stuart Manley with that wonderful round of 68 earlier today taking well taking advantage of the morning conditions but actually it was rotten first thing this morning has improved slightly since then testing conditions we said we we’re told we might get another shower or two throughout the day then it should be quite a pleasant evening it’s going to be kind of sunshine showers Breezy over the next few days Danny Willet open up with the birdie then got it to two over fought back 71 nice to see Danny playing decent golf again had a m after his W orasa last year lost it completely but he’s on the men Tom Layman around of 72 for the 1996 open champion John Daly’s in the field this week no doubt looking colorful one at St Andrews in 1995 Harrington the winner here at burkdale last time the open was staged here in 2008 Callum shinin played so nicely in Scotland last weekend little unlucky in the end not to run out a winner there just couldn’t quite get through that 18th hole unscathed kka birdie p e effortlessly brushed in three in a row four under par dangerous Paul Casey Adam Scott and Ricky Fowler are next to go 26 minutes past one it’s their schedule tea time f is in good form Casey’s had a good season playing nice and consistently isn’t he Casey he’s come back and foul it well he’s a proven winner now he’s really coming into his own and Adam Scott well he could do anything he can get the flat stick going for a man who grew up in California he handles the British links conditions pretty well this rookie Fowler he’s got all the shots this is game number 37 on the te from the USA Ricky Fowler sporting one of these popular two irons looking for a low Stinger down this opening hole [Applause] on the te from Australia Adam Scott taking it all on with the big dog Adam Scott he’s one of the better drivers of the golf ball so close to winning the open up the road at lthm that’s how you do it on the te from England Paul Casey W oh was right in the mix back in 2010 over the old course of St Andrews just couldn’t quite maintain his momentum over the closing nine holes [Applause] perfect t- shot for spe 15 second four under par five starting it down the right wants the draw back is it oh ground hook little unlucky if that kicks left it’s down by the flag but it’s come back into the Trap not not a difficult shot for him oh Justin Justin stay stay at least it’s not going to go in his footprints in a horrific position wasn’t it did the Wall of Death and finished on the back down slug really ugly ston still cut this just left out to right stay there stay there you wait 15 holes to get to your first Power five on this course and you have two and three holes but you want to use them Justin Rose actually played that too well wasn’t an easy bunker shot and probably wouldn’t have believed he could leave a CH from there good birdie chance here Haron straight pot and straight in very nice solid start three PS number bie well he’s not in the bunker stening he’s just on the downside but I think he’d rather be in the bunker here a difficult shot this coming over the shoulder of the bunker he’s got to pitch it onto the edge of the green and get a lot of spin this shot but it’s on a down slope this is not easy excellent shot from ston caught it a little bit heavy just give it the release up to the hole bogey P for Rosie well done back to even par doubles on par threes doubles anyway but far threes they seem to hurt more good line on the bunker for Jordan into the wi no bad I never agree with sten’s ball being left there yeah it’s a strange one Sam I was thinking the same thing just Thomas is for his power on 14 side right oh oh my goodness that is a hor shoot looking his caddy for sympathy I’m afraid you only allow 10 seconds when you get there Chim a boogy for just [Applause] thomasy John Johnson on the back there who played the sunshine T played B States great player in his own right Sullivan lovely shot into the first that’s for birdie very good good start for Andy Sullivan [Music] Garcia good luck and a good shot to an awkward pin helped by the fact it was into the wind but it was good spe has he done oh double breaker look like it couldn’t miss a foot out have the scorecard for swe four birdies no Bogies first round of the Open Championship you can’t ask for much more half for Kim remains on par calm steady customer the defending Champion 7 hours to the minute since the first t-shot of this 146th open was struck by marira in horrible conditions early this morning the third shot was also hit by him as well I feel for Mark winner here in 98 it really was horrible early on and the later starters have certainly got the best of this opening day ston even power make that one under you have to wait a long time for a power five to come around here at Royal burkdale and when they do and there are only two of them going to take advantage particularly at 15 we’re not going to lose any Marshals this week are we that isn’t orange that’s orange isn’t enough afternoon unseasonably cool I think you would say the two Americans the two major champions Jordan SPI and Brooks capka leading on this opening day long walk back to the 16th T speak expecting record crowds for a burkdale open this year somewhere around 225,000 th000 people alltime record in fact the top two attendances ever both at St Andrews not surprisingly as we go to 14 and [Applause] kka well the crowd always find that quite amusing I don’t think the player does Ser Sergio Garcia this for bird at the second get back one he dropped at the first a look at how his pting is no good speed just kind of hit it through the break over borrowed slightly the Master’s champion [Applause] ah head to 15 and Justin Rose and the the left rough are ling pretty well though oh not no W that’s not one that Justin will remember with any effect action Dicky Matana such tough C to read they’ve got a couple of holes in a row here where the flags are cut just on the little edges of ridges one that not an easy hole today 16 bit of a sleep of this 438 some bunkers down the right to avoid but the left and roughs not too bad if you overhook it you got a favor the left hand side here driver for Stenson that’s in Arnold Palmer country down there at the back at the 16th T spe pronounced left forefinger there you see on his left hand interlocking grip actually doesn’t even inter just goes over the top Greg Norman used to grip it like that right it’s not good right here wind bushes everything not far from Palmer’s plaque smashed a six hour out of the Winds and the Heather and knocked on the Green they’re a long way right those two Sam I think you got to be down the left hand side here there’s a lot of room down there Sur they didn’t mean it it over there though Kim’s been driving the ball pretty well today needs a good one here also with the interlock [Applause] grip the pmer plaque you just saw there in the in the bush another great shs blade and Open championship history back to Casey at the first looking for an opening birdie yeah I reckon I still think he’s got a major in him somewhere Paul Casey I agree Tony got to save par oh well done Brooks kka woo amazing took a month off I thought maybe he’d you know gone to settle you know all business for the managers and sponsors Just A month’s holiday oh I love that Birdie on 17 this they get back to two over which be a huge difference oh it’s straight in excellent Eagle 17 applying his trade on the PJ tour and doing it well says he’s come back into for again that’s how it looks opening day of the 146th Open Championship Jordan SP and Brooks capka tied for the lead at 4 under Ian pull her in with a splendid 67 earlier he’s only one behind excellent 68 from Stuart Manley and Alex noren and El former Champion one under through four and 70s for tongchai J and Steve Stricker I think tongchai in particular will be delighted with that he’s been pretty depressed about his form recently he’s not had a good year and had a chat with him in Scotland last week I think it was and he was a bit down about things but that’s a good start and Brandon Grace is another man who I think has got absolutely the game for Links Golf low ball flight good short game starts with a 70 as does Russell Henley all of those players in the early stages of this opening round third shot at 15 oh he’s played that oh little unluckily not to release up the whole High there a p second good third back on the te kepka driver this will get a proper hiding anded left though kind of got away with it lie doesn’t too look too severe a foot right You’ have been perfect I’m just doing a job well spe’s got away with it a bit here he his Li great Li he could have been a lot worse he can hit it that’s a good thing Ball’s above his feet get into the back of the ball that’s the first thing you look at these shots can I get into the back of the ball and he can 160 yards ahead of him and the flag’s on the front so he’s not going to get any control out of this y it’s always a hard green to hit this one from the Fairway but from a position like this it’s going to be you got a terrific shot to get the ball onto the green there’s so many around catch an ER shot 75 having a bit of a laugh on a joke with the crowd Marshall hasn’t stepped on his ball this time so he can play out straight just to say to go straight right heard him say it on the [Music] Trap just stand now guys thank you not bad from there though Sam he’ll have a chance that has excited himself same sort of problem St and it’s a thick Li this one and if he misses the green left it’s a it’s a poor shot he’s got to play right if it dribbles off into the right hand bunkers he’s got a chance but obviously be trying to get this one the green but it’s pretty thick there be trying to dig this out 155 but he’s strong we know that well done stand please thank you and Kim in the perfect spot just to the left of Palmer’s claque great memories no he’s hit a few shots left the last few holes the 14th noticeably so we to take this flag on but only left of this pin it’s going to fall off the green and I won the the players it was also 13th in the US Open but that’s actually the only cut he’s made since winning the Players Justin Thomas at [Music] 15 hugely talented young American and certainly the smartest dra golfer today Alex Le this for 69 on the 18th oh shame you work hard all day keeping under par give one away at the 18 still oh no he’s giving two away oh no oh it’s a one over 71 oh what a shame 56 finish it wasn’t careless either he took his time anyhow still one under after four holes oh very good chance of going two [Applause] under 67 best completed round so far fter Justin Rose birdie chance and slides by it’s just amazing to think for all the success Justin has had and then the quality of players he’s still never done better than the fourth place he had as a 17-year-old amiter all these years ago in the open that was spei from the bunker B of work left for Jordan at 16 Justin Thomas level power today this to get to War under very good over the funny horseshoe the last very quickly Bird’s the next gets it back to warand we’re using his chipping wood here for the fourth time Kim he’s did it more for chipping than he has for long shots in it goes old bonus birdie there for the Korean just 22 years old it look just as good from overhead oh yeah 11 successive pars before his first birdie at 12 dropped one at 14 but back on par again with that birdie here at 16 there’ll be a few people out with their three Woods practicing their chipping they watching this today doesn’t matter how you do it he’s brilliant with that club now Stenson that was a great shot into here from that lie for Stenson about as good as he could have done this is across the green little bit right to left but a good chance this for Henrik excellent Pace just a fraction offline andri senson stays one under as he begins the defense of his title same Marcus kimy W Jordan speel for under if he can hold this one apparently it was not a nice lie in the bunker so he’s done quite well to get it as close as he as he has Jordan but has dropped a shot today so far he doesn’t miss many does he hardworking power for Jordan SP stays tied for the lead with Brooks kka at four underpar and here is the man who shares the lead Big t- Shot pulled it left ke is just got an iron in left looks like o tricky bunker shot a long bunker shot across the green but not that difficult it’s into the breeze a bit more aggressive Jason day he ped three solid start and it’s just got [Applause] better James Han who was the last man into the field when bran snea had to withdraw and he is making the most of the opportunity great birdie at 14 for the American and he moves to 3 under it’s like a shot of adrenaline when you first reserve and suddenly you’re in the pigi a man who still does everything as well as anyone in the field T to Green had issues from this range but seems to have sorted it well done and another man who looks like he’s had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders found a way to put everything else the long game the chipping The Bunker play is as good as it was 20 years ago and got Old Faithful Ricky Roberts on the bag still power 5 17th good indication there of just how far we are from the seaside unusual for a link course normally you get views of the sea and we’re much closer to it but rbert don’t fantastic power 517 567 got to thread it through these two Hills they shouldn’t be in play today that bunker is 37 which Kim’s just toppled into beforehand this is Trusty CL for Henrik needs a bit of a draw here if he can get one steady steady yeah great t- shot wind is down but off the left hand side that doesn’t make it easy here tiny little two pot bunkers down on the right hand side right where they want to drive the golf ball now spe tou left it’s done very well it’s a half decent Li there it can get up not too bad where he is capka deep revetted face long bunker shot but as Sam said into the wind he could be a bit more aggressive than that probably worried a bit about the steepness of the face rule one just don’t catch the lip and come back in your footprint Jordan spe and Brooks cap leading by one from Ian polter James Han who was first Reserve until a couple of days ago that’s also on three under Stewart Manley and Alex noran both 68 Matt Fitzpatrick 69 the one man who’ll be more disappointed than most is certainly Tommy Fleetwood though the Local Hero huge galleries following Tommy he’s four over unfortunately playing 15 hasn’t had a birdie yet two Bogies and a double at the ninth huge expectation on Tommy this week at the moment only 21 players under par on this opening day of the open ready cup star Thomas Peters great second at the 17 this is for eagle oh well done well done three over to the turn but four under the back nine thas Peters get into the red figures great comeback there back to the first kin kizner Dy can you imagine some of the players that are watching this now that teed off this morning he’s just flipped a sand wedge in there they’re Tak eights and sevens and sixes here fantastic opening shot for K surely that’s can’t be his drive there I don’t think that’s his drive we’ll give him a par that is true though isn’t it’s classic open isn’t it you can get so unlucky with a draw you can get the worst of the weather first two days let’s hope that doesn’t happen here here but when your first tea off time is at 6:35 and the last tea off time is when most people are thinking of settling down for their evening meal you’re going to get changes in the weather now Matt suyama the world number two at 15 [Applause] top 15 in the Irish open last time out couple of weeks ago Look Back Down the the 17th much changed Green from the last time the open was here when rodri Harrington won in 2008 yeah it certainly is doie it’s a very long narrow green Kim in the bunker can’t move this more than 80 90 yards out here they’re real proper bunkers here they’re a penalty shot let me tell you something speed light is beautiful in that rough couldn’t have plac it better now Sam and I have just been joined in the commentary Box by uh the man who won the open 20 years ago Justin Leonard Justin good to see does it feel like 20 years uh yes it does actually and today is actually the 20th anniversary of the actual day the actual day yes at Royal trun special week fun to get to relive it and especially last year playing at trun um a lot of great memories M man’s got some good memories of trun as well yes he does an amazing performance last year battling Phil for all weekend and then those two rounds they played Saturday were just amazing launched it high in the air St that’s okay I think the pins on that level must be chipping across there quite easy little sprinkle a in his way the stuff and patting it he’ll have to chip [Applause] it Jordan spe bouncing it on nicely he’s shouting down that means it’s going quickly well it’s come down is it oh it’s come down just perfectly there’s a nice start to your day oh within a yard of out of bounds of the te how many players would have taken that this morning at 6:47 a.m. I think 155 still didn’t know it gone in I can’t see the level of the putting surface from there another Contender for shot of the day plenty more golf to come though here in the first round at ronal budale now capka has to move into the lead on his own up the hill fordie for the lead Miss on the left I think it’s always such a buzz Justin isn’t it to come to to the open especially the likes of you and Sam have played in it so many times you’ve You’ve Won it but for all of us it’s just a a thrill to come to to this tournament isn’t it oh it’s it’s Unique among the other three major championship ships and the opportunity to come over here and and uh experience Link’s golf which has its you know its own idiosyncrasies uh this golf course seems to be the least of those every player I’ve spoken with this week has talked about how fair Royal burkdale is yeah this is regardless as the fairest of them all good Fairways to hit not bounce off from the middle of the fairways into the rough Pur L is having a tough run he just gone bogey bogey double oh even be worse than that oh dear oh this is the man who hasn’t missed a cut since the open last year and has a great record in the open one in 2010 was in the playoff in 2015 but having a t of time today Louis as we go back to Rose at 16 a little bit more it’s not bad from there though I guess growing up in Texas Justin the wind was never an issue for you you were used to that but how long did it take you to get to grips with the the vagaries of lynx golf well I came over and played as an Amer in 1993 at Royal St George and uh I fell in love with immediately I didn’t understand it immediately but I fell in love with it uh just the the the strategy that was required to play Links Golf um and then just being over here and amongst these these old towns where uh the these links scl courses have so much history involved um and uh I just immediately grew to it and I think so much of it over here is attitude if you come in with with a good positive attitude and embrace it um you’ll reap the benefits of that and and I did that at a young age it’s a tricky one this for Stenson just putting it up the bank it’ll go left or right all the way as it gets onto the green that sprinkler is not in his way wind just held that very straight strong one right to left there that’s b a tricky one there that’s got a bit of a swing on it from left to right can’t believe that start by Charlie Hoffman holding you second at one of the toughest holes in the go on the golf course it’s all downhill from there did a bit like this bunker shot look at this these I’m not sure but these camera bunker great for us I used to hate them as a player wow go un admitted did you closure your [Applause] eyes Captain Clark this for Birdie on 18 come on Darren but nice make your first cup of tea taste that be bit better there you go Big D 75 roals and George’s oh he’s been struggling with his game so much Sam hasn’t he he’s just marking time for the become a senior golfer and get that second wind cuz as we all know it’s dead easy in the senior tour isn’t it the two the difference between the senior tour and the main tour you get better every year on the main T you’ve got that to come Justin well see I covered the Senior PGA Championship the US uh at the end of May and uh I’m not sure uh I’m not sure I’m going to go out there and try and compete against those guys they still take it very seriously a little less serious than than the main tour um but they put in their time and they they love it they love playing competing and I think I’m getting the point where I enjoy talking about it more than actually doing it well the great thing is I mean most people have Hiatus between 44 and 45 to 50 where you kind of just in the No Man’s Land then you get her 50 again you’re back at the top of the leaderboard you’re winning and it brings back the old urges and the old juices let spe tap in Jordan SP with that birdie at 17 moves into the lead on his own I notice you did play in your home open this year Justin in the the Texas open but you’ve not been playing a whole lot really have you no that’s the only event I played uh this season and by Design I I wanted to I think it’s very hard to do what we’re doing right now in play at the same time and do either of them very well and so I RO keco with his t-shot on 16 and uh I just decid I want to commit to one or the other and and uh this seemed like a better option well the great thing is we’ll never miss the cut I well and I didn’t miss the cut I’ve made every cut I’ve played every tournament I’ve played this this season I made the cut so made about a 20 footer on the ninth green on Friday afternoon to make the cut and I just laughed when it went in that would have missed years ago I’ve seen that film now Kim excellent bunker shot a little unlucky not to release up to the whole side but this for his birdie at 17 it does not that much shame Mr cut in his last two outings in the PGA tour as I say after winning the Players had had a good US Open but that’s actually the only cut he’s made since winning it sass now Rose for pop we’ll see if Henrik could uh get a bit of a read from Kim’s putt coming from the other side but so Kim played quite a bit of break I don’t think he’s going to break as much from this side of the hole but these are the putts he was holding this would have been good a year ago even though up until about March this year when he got in the US and started playing and struggled a bit that’ll be a disappointing par Mr power for ston shame Mr F today is still under par 500 leading cap cup ready for Coach there at the second good start for him played very well last week in Scotland particularly on the Saturday in those horrible wet and windy conditions Jordan Speed leading by one though Brooks kepka on four under Ian pter and jamesan on three and then there’s a long list of players on two underpar if you have just joined us you might be wondering how Charlie Hoffman got to two under after one hole well there’s only one way you can do it hold your second shot and he did that’s y back into the wind at 16 just 3/4 CCH punch it through the wind a little bit right maybe that’s [Applause] excent did you play here just in the open I did I played here in 98 and 08 uh not with very good results but I like most of the players really enjoyed the golf course now Jordan here at 18 oh Jes chopped it right bunker there somewhere no it’s fine what is he like I wish I wish I could M hit him like that yeah straight down the middle perfect you’ve been defending here of course in 98 Justin weren’t you I was yes how was that as an experience was was it okay once you stepped onto the first te was it all of the stuff beforehand that was a distraction you know it really didn’t require a whole lot during the week uh you know the hardest part of the week was giving back to Clara jug and I wasn’t 8 ft inside the the car park before they came running to the car and demanded it back I told them at first I said what I was supposed to bring that back I forgot it but just the IR am for Henrik Stenson I’m not surprised Ling straight down wind playing very short 473 great hole all Great Courses finished with great holes and this is one of them it’s leaking a little left but it should be short of that bunker that’s perfect from the Iceman looking straight down the hole towards the clubhouse I’m right halfway down the Fairway here beautiful Art Deco Clubhouse thinking back to that two iron Tom wats in it 200 18 yards I think it was there no too high today it is off the te Kim going with his wood that he’s chipped in with he’s given it enough tries Jim he must have used it it five six times today from off the green I think he had some yeah five I’ve counted to get one end sit set not sure that’s in number of right oh inches must have just fallen in Jamie four birdies no Bogies for Brooks looks like he’ll continue that Trend lovely third in there in his first time to use the putter breaking quite a bit to the left he’s become a very good player Justin I like Charlie’s game uh he’s not afraid to to stand up and hit a shot that’s required uh especially off the te I love the way he drives a golf ball plays aggressively and and uh he puts his work in as well so Yama highest ranked Japanese player ever in the world rankings no one’s ever got to number two in the world before imagine the pressure he’s under from uh you know just the media at home and they follow him wherever he goes he handles it beautifully I’m sure the sponsor soften the blow slightly true true enough bogey P for James Hand trouble off the te one Slips Away for American Paul Casey Resurgence of form over the last year or so for Casey this boy can play hav seen that honestly but wonderful shot from casy man that hold his hold him one to win his singles match in the rer cup k club Ireland oh my goodness to hit a drive that far straight downwind short enough Club to put that much spin on it greens are still soft from the overnights rain overnight rains now kka for par here at 16 this next t-shot at 17 may have a little more mustard on it after that first bogy yeah and suddenly Jordan spe’s a two- shot lead just in the semi- rough Henri sensum 212 this a it’s a flying lie this this ball will travel out of this grass but he’s got a great angle to the flag it’s back right can’t see this being more than an a time for Henrik it’s going to go from here 212 all up straight down wind sun’s out wasn’t 212 Jimmy the distance of Watson’s two iron that’s right same ston flying an 8 Pin High amazing great Tom Watson won it five years five times in eight years starting finishing here his last one his last victory in the open his only win in England One open four times in Scotland Mr Watson wasn’t down win when he hit that two on he’s got a chance here Kim problem is the ball just nestled a little bit the lip isn’t that much of an issue it’s the lie if you had a clean lie he could have whipped this up he’s got 158 to the front but from this lie I don’t think he can quite get it there it’s all about the strike that’s an excellent shot he didn’t make this mistake of getting too greedy he’s left himself a tough chip over the Trap down win but when you get too greedy in those shots you hit the face you’re back in all of a sudden double triple comes into play Old Dy just take your punishment get back into play well perfect position for our tournament leader 161 yards this can only be a wedge for Jordan he’s hit some stunning wedge shots already today see if he can produce another in front of this huge crowd yes he can been a very impressive start this by Jordan SP no Bogies in the car there isn’t going to be one now meanwhile back out in the fourth Ricky Fowler I think stroke that’s just as good as it gets justtin well and I think it transfers well over here because the the pace of the greens being a little slower than the in the states uh he he has a little more speed going through stroke I think it’s easier for him to make that adjustment yeah he puts a beautiful roll on the ball a rose for Eagle off the right it will no not quite turn that much excellent pot though and a good birdie get the shot drop drops back at 16 back and back to level par [Applause] Casey after that terrific approach little tap in birdie at the [Applause] fourth he just returned from a cycling trip in Italy climbed some 37,000 ft over the week it’s in great shape now an eagle putt for Justin Thomas beautifully done there a sporting the tie it’s very [Applause] smart better if it was fastened though no I didn’t think he’d take the three would out for this one he could run it around the lip but I’d be impressed that’s a little Lobby sand on Loft most lofty Club in your bag just chip it up let the wind do the rest wonderful from seim and isn’t that a glorious picture of the famous art deco Clubhouse instantly recognizable Royal burdale an even par round of 70 for the Players Champion 11 straight pars couple of birdies couple of Bogies the last seven holes he’ll not be too unhappy with that start a suspect and just as Justin was saying the players who played early this morning and really tough conditions must be looking at this and thinking why me why me indeed doy should have that written on my golf [Laughter] bag well he’s got a chance here senson putting up the hill it’s pretty slow from here from the back of the green a little bit left to right play well great defense of his championship so far must be delighted to be in the thick of it here this is going to move about a cup left to right up the green he was talking down his chances when he left Scotland last week he didn’t play all that bad at all in Scotland in fact he finished well good good last round but just felt he wasn’t quite in tougher things coming to burdale K no t- shot at the PA 34th I know Matt coocher loves to come over here and play played last week and played well really enjoys linkx golf well speed this for 64 lowest round ever in an Open Championship 63 we’re just blaz watching this going around at 64 no just the 65 then it’s a great start for obviously be disappointed with that one an excellent day a bogy Insight just one five shame they always hurt them you know you should Knock It In Crowd waiting to Roar already a two-time major champion and after a great start in his quest for a third 65 for Jordan SPI course record here at rbert was set during the 91 open Jody mud one of those 63s no one’s ever bettered at in a major now on Henri a subpar round to begin the defense of his title 169 see can 70 Nick Nick price became came the closest to Bea Augusta when the H should that P in the last screen for 62 Phil Mel in last year TR he the he the one for 62 as well didn’t he it’ll happen it’s just as surprising that it hasn’t really beautiful blue skies overhead now nice Breezy Seaside afternoon lovely conditions for this Open championship wherever you’re watching us around the world hopefully you’re enjoying the coverage the best players in the world taking on the Brookdale challenge let SK for birdie very nice Andy Sullivan two under Jordan spe in with a 65 to lead by two from Ian poter Justin Thomas Brooks kka coming towards the end of their round they could yet get a little bit closer to the leader 68 from Stuart Manley of Wales finished 33 for a 68 well done Stuart he was out early this morning in the tough conditions it’s an excellent round of golf qualif to play in the open at the jber open in the South African qualifier back at the beginning of the year how highly do you rate Justin [Laughter] Justin uh he’s a fun player to watch he’s uh generates a lot of Club head speed uh a little bit inconsistent but he’s young uh but when he’s on he’s he’s very very good be interesting to see how well he controls this going downwind and now that it’s dried out a bit F only a second open finished down the field last year at trun but did make the cut so sure he learned a great deal from The Experience more problems for Justin here 18 perty shot left real up and down day off a good start then gave them back got under again then went over back to level looking like dropping one 18 M soyama at 17 L who’s been struggling today at plus eight that’s not what he was looking for he will be absolutely sick he’s been playing so consistently well as I said he hasn’t missed a cut since last year’s open second in the players couple of other top 10s wonderful open experience you’d have thought Louis was definitely a contender for the title Justin oh absolutely the way the way he swings uh it’s so fluid and I mean I’m really in touch with powerless effort um that’s my game Lou is effortless power it’s amazing it’s a wonderful golf swing isn’t it Rosie third shot into the last boy this is where it all happened 19 years ago Justin can’t imagine the pressure that the English players are under playing here and having not won in a while it’s going to happen soon now Brooks at 17 oh that was just a couple of feet from being perfect finding a bit of sand in the way in Brooks easy to do at Royal Brookdale though they are proper Seaside bunkers are going to cost you half a shot every time if not more olison young Dane at the second power at the first this to get his round under par rattled it in wonderful t-a coachers an excellent birdie great start from mat 200 under after four this is a tough one here difficult distance hit it like a bunker shot or do you try and pick it oh that’s beautiful wow what a shot and the crowd recognize it [Applause] too is down through the ball he’s taking his least lofted wedge and Blasting it through there perfect strike can’t do it much better than [Applause] that a double Bogey and a triple bogey and a of regular Bogies as well it’s just been a horrible day for Lou 788 overpar Sun breaking through sunny and Breezy afternoon here at Brookdale and we’ve just been joined by Thomas bjor rer Cup captain man who played in what was it 18 opens I think I I check Thomas Second Twice good memories and bad memories I guess yeah there’s a bit of bit of a mixed bag there but um I think anytime you play in an Open Championship you you make good memories um and the bad memories often comes from playing playing very well and you almost get there it’s not so much the the ones where you miss the cut you remember it’s it’s the ones where you you actually get very close and you don’t quite get there what you make of this timee Justin I think it’s a bold move I played uh in the in the open exhibition a few years ago at St Andrews on Wednesday and I put a tie and button down on and it was good in that format I don’t know if I uh oh what a shot all that practice in the sand the last couple holes finally p off every golfer gets into that moment in time in their career where things just go the right way and it seems to be going Brooks’s way at the [Applause] moment first tournament since he won the US Open and he looks to be picking up where he left off of one of a legal three from the sand at 17 and he’s back alongside Jordan SP at the top of the leaderboard Justin Rose real up and down day for Justin he hit it three Bogies in the last five holes for Justin and it’s a [Applause] 71i to go to three on the par oh didn’t see that one coming [Applause] that’s disappointing after such a beautiful bunker shot and now Justin Thomas for his par great round three under par to begin the open wouldn’t it be fun if he turned up for dinner tonight and they turned them away for not wearing a tie can’t see it catching on but you never know Adam Scott for birdie back at five beautiful rooll get him in red [Applause] numbers very much many people’s favorite and player in the world talking of Aussies nice to see Aaron badley on the leaderboard couple under through the first seven holes but it’s Jordan SPI and Brooks Kea at the top justtin Thomas joining Ian polter at 3 under Stuart Manley and Alex noren in 68 poter Manley noren all round in the difficult morning conditions they can be well pleased with their start Matt Fitzpatrick Thomas Peters and the defending Champion Henrik Stenson all 691 under par par 70 here at Royal burkdale 34 out 36 back only two power fives and they come in the last four it’s a strange configuration and it’s such a tough Golf Course Thomas isn’t it when you need a a par five early on just to give you a little bit of ritee but you don’t get it here need more no it’s a hardworking Golf Course uh book there it’s um just kind of have to plot along plot along and then try and take advantage of those last few holes and this SC course you know those power PES coming there just to finish the round off but you got to be in a position to finish the round off and um and that’s a you kind of lost your mood before you get there it’s uh that’s very key on this golf course it’s it is a long tough track to to get to those power fives Thomas it’s a golf course it’s hard to get comfortable on because every hole is going at a different angle a lot of links courses you know is TR last year you’re playing downwind except for the eighth the whole way out and then into the wind on the way back and so you get used to how far the ball is going what the effect the wind is having on it but Ro burkdale is kind of all over the place and so it’s very hard to to really get a true gauge mfield is the same Justin isn’t it mirfield you’re always crosswind up wind downwind it’s absolutely real test this saw the figure there for the number of consecutive measures that saio has played and he won the 73rd at last the major breakthrough for for saio it’s turning into quite a spectacular year for Spanish sport not just Serio winning the Masters but Real Madrid won the Champions League Rafa adal won the French Open gaban mugara won the women’s at Wimbledon last week John Ramen Rafa Bara won the last two in the European tour it’s not been a bad year to be Spanish has it wonder if the sequence will continue here three Spaniards in the world top 20 for the first time began his tournament career of course here in Europe playing on the The Challenge tour secondary tour here in in Europe one four times there then one the Turkish Airlines open on the European tour before going to the the PGA Tour and as now major Champion oh yeah talking of the challenge thr his brother fin is second on the challenge last week I saw that Thomas yeah so it’s not only Brooks that’s a good golfer in the family Chase is making his way that would have looked quite good from where he was and a little bit unfortunate just to land Softly on that bunker and and roll back into it he has been in a few of these last few holes hold the last one oh don’t turn away he does that quite often but not typically with an iron see that’s sometimes from monama off the tea hopefully that will get down in the flat who’s this coming I wonder I’ll get a huge welcome on to the first te Rory meloy and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Rory plays he’s missed the cut on the IR open and the Scottish open and he said himself he needed the practice he really wanted to play four rounds welcome on to First t for another open playing with Dustin Johnson beautiful approach from Tommy into the last not easy playing at home Thomas no it’s not and he’s been looking forward to this for such a long time and you know I think he’s probably the one that he feels like he’s let himself down more than anything this week it’s there been so so much talk about him coming to to this golf course and and playing in front of his home crowds and yeah it’s always difficult it’s always one of those things that if it gets talked about too much you you got to be you got to be very strong to to carry that through and and once he hit that poor iron shot in the middle of the front line there it just seems like it it unraveled a little bit for him today but hopefully he can get back get good rest and come out tomorrow and and put on a fighting performance and even try and make the cut you know golf is a funny game you can always um you can always make the cut from from faroul back’ll be huge galleries following this three bow you can guarantee that Rory mroy Dustin Johnson and Char schwartzel the world number one world number four and the world number 21 who who has been all three of been successful Seasons so far Rory of course been bothered by that rib injury which first played up in South Africa which really came about because he’d been hitting so many balls testing for new equipment in the offseason and it’s all been a little bit of a struggle for him so far maybe it’ll come good here at the open let’s hope so okay here we go this is game number 44 on the tea from northern Island Rory mroy the 2014 Champion not far from here at Royal lpool the driver normally such a strength of rores it was letting him down last week and he is obviously taking an iron off the first will he use the driver much this week it’s a kind of course where sometimes you don’t need [Applause] [Applause] to on the tea from the USA Dustin Johnson the world number one that’s the cut in the US Open last time out so DUS had a a good break as well three wins already this year including two wgc’s fabulous start to 2017 good record two in the open second to Daren at St George’s in 2011 couple of other top 10s including one last year [Applause] on the te from South Africa Charles [Applause] swartzel second and FedEx and Jude this year third and the Masters former austa champion of course charl he’s gone left he’s he’s okay any thoughts on Rory’s apparent troubles over the the last few weeks you guys I read where uh he’s obviously played the last two weeks and in playing in in that much weather and wind uh when you’re not playing well can really throw you off the rails a bit and uh you know thing is it’s never as good golf is never as far away as we think um but it’s been off for a while and so um certainly hopeful that he will find a little something today out there and get that spring back in a step just turning to the arm lock of Matt coocha here on the fif works well he goes to three under through five holes nice start from Matt but turning back to Rory I think you know he’s just the type of guy that when things are not quite right you know he he’ll turn turn on it at one day and then it it’ll all be forgotten and then he’ll start playing well he hold the last bunker shark Brooks made a good effort of that one as well powerp forio Garcia [Applause] the7th yeah Rory himself says the pieces are all there it’s just a case of putting them together so Yama and that’s a pretty impressive start too for the world number two Hadi Matsuyama round in 68 earlier on The Spectators and there were thousands here at half 6 this morning were huddled under umbrellas as the rain lashed down much more pleasant now wonderful round from Brooks cka that wonderful run of holes over the middle of the round uh set it all up and then uh an eagle there in the end of the round five under par tied for the lead it’s not always an easy thing to do bridge a month a month uh without playing competitive golf coming from the his victory at the US Open to now he’s tied for the lead here at the open Tommy Fleetwood eventually signing for a 766 overpower without a birdie on the card back to the first then ch consel such a tough opening hole this it is this isn’t a bad place to come in from uh great angle you can see what’s in front of you question is just judging the line how the ball comes out say that was rather well done that that was the ball of Dustin Johnson on the first obviously got it turning the blade turning over in the rough and that is not a good place to be he has to maneuver his way either over around that bunker as we go to Rory the last man in this group into the first same angle as swartzel but a little bit further up in the rough that looked to be somewhere right of the green not sure if it made it over it’s well right oh goodness gracious there were a few of those last week next three ball off led by Lee Westwood and with Patrick Reed and John Ram another very attractive three ball for The Spectators on this opening day and there’s not many in the field have come closer to winning a major without quite managing it than Lee Westwood yep beautiful swing of Sergio Garcia there straight down the middle we watch Ricky Fowler on the six for par nice start the first five holes this one slips by and he’ll move back to level PA Dustin Johnson and a tricky one here at the first me in this F sunny afternoon at BD down Justin Leonard and Thomas beö I don’t think either of you were particularly fancy this shot this is tricky isn’t it Dustin’s got a couple of options unfortunately none of them are good looks like he’s going to try and place something into the bank and problem is it goes a little bit downhill once it gets on the green and breaks away from the hole Rory’s got his own issues well right of the green Sly looks if he doesn’t have to fly the bunker it’s still not an easy shot but the Bunker’s in his line I think once he gets on the ground oh he’s taking it up in the air n oh well yeah I mean you could do that if you wanted to wow yeah that was a real tough shot Dustin what a shot that was superb he did it he did it so casually as well it looked like his walk almost it was just I’ll just do this and then throw it up in the air and there it lands up it goes and yeah four on the first oh Westward read and RAM next to go okay we have a good day this is game number 45 on the te from Spain John Ram little bit early at the age of 22 to talk about the next Superstar but he is hugely impressive on the Irish open 24 under par just two weeks ago the real deal This brilliant [Applause] Spaniard on the tea from the USA Patrick Reed disappointed to miss the cut at Dundonald last week in the asset management Scottish open again he did manage to avoid playing in the bad weather on Saturday on the te from England Lee [Applause] Westwood at least one top three in all four majors Lee Westwood no win so far it’s a nice way to start your open challenge it’s just a conveyor belt of top golfers in the commentary box at the moment Justin is gone we now been joined by Laura Davis good to see you Laura nice to be here just in time to see what Rory’s going to do here he’s taking a drop hasn’t he fre drop off the path chases it through [Music] though scruffy start there for Rory with just a Weds I think it’s one of those that just get knocked down by the wind comes up a bit short fourth shot at the opening hall for Rory Mel right for goodness sake very surprised he puted that cuz he had quite a bit of the longer Fringe to Pat through first lack of confidence you’d have thought meanwhile up ahead Jason d almost a slam donk but I guess the boots go with the slam donking I saw you admiring those Thomas yeah the the Ricky fer high tops back to the first and Charles Schwarz has been a spectator for a little while but now he does get to for birdie that is a nice way to start El struggling a little bit although Dustin’s pretty close for his [Applause] car t- shot at the par 37th for PA Casey none of the path threes here at Bert deer are easy very attractive this another another of them down the hill beautifully played bir the fourth good chance of making birdie at seven as well back to michaelroy this for bogy at the first very nice he’ll be very pleased to get out of there with the bogy because that would have been a horror start stranger quickly it turns around he walks off there with a six and it’s the end of the world isn’t it because he’s hold a great part for five you walk off of the bouns and you step Don’t You Jason in with a very impressive birdie at eight no Johnson’s in for his part at the first you see that guy with Bri green good I’ve been saying it all year he looks a awful lot older than 22 doesn’t he yeah he’s a strong he’s a strong boy John he’s putting a good stamp Run the World of Golf at the moment he really is he’s a he’s a good guy he’s passionate about his golf and has a strong Bel in what he can do not a nice place and of course he’s very desperate to be on your team next year as well Thomas not here to talk about the Ridder cup but I know it’s very much in John’s mind he was talking about that when we were in France a couple of weeks ago now schwarzel t-shot at the second dting right looks like he’s gone over to the rough on the down the third hole there he might be a little bit unlucky if he’s gone into that dark green cabbage they’ve quite found it yet there’s Dustin never nice following a a dodgy t- shot from your fellow competitor so not that I think Dustin worries about too much you always to your first floor so you are all right I wish he’s G the other way needs a bit of light just carry that corner which knowing him he can yeah that’s nice now good angle to that pin back right you sorted out the pting yet Laura I know that’s been uh causing you all sorts of Angus for the last while well I finally gone to this claw business I’ve been seeing it for years and uh it’s last couple of weeks it’s a definite Improvement so I have to say I’m very pleased with that I’m enjoying enjoying patting for once beautiful swing there Rory Mary looks like he’s strip bomb do it every year and I hate to say it but you’ve got a senior event to look forward to now yes we played one last week Tris Johnson won it I finished third that was nice and then next year we’ve got the uh senior women’s US Women’s Open which will be great f [Applause] Westwood at the [Applause] first he still got a major in them surely Thomas hasn’t he even at 44 well you would like to think so you would hope that that would come his way because he very much deserves it that’s for sure if we watch Mr Poo everywhere he goes in the world Phil Mickelson walk on to the first think about Westwood talking of putting if he’ had just putted anything he would have won three four five Majors for sure cooa here at the sixth looking good oh yes cooch up to a flyer he’s pretty popular too you talk about Nicholson but this guy genuinely everywhere he goes everyone just seems to love him seems I’ve never met him but looks like a really nice guy and that’s a nice start I wonder if he’s got over last year at rron how can you play that well score that well and not win 17 underpar at the open 65 in the last round and it wasn’t good enough just one of the great days golf brother Tim on the back now one of the most publicized player caddy breakups in a long time Phil and Bones have been together for 25 years bones is here at the open working as an OnCourse reporter for American television and it’s brother Tim who’s on the bag for Phil whose last win actually came in the open when1 at mfield back in 2013 wonder if bones got this group in his first assignment no bet he’s out there with him good Insight well keep an eye out for him Laura sure there’s an American producer with a sense of humor somewhere playing today with Franchesco Molinari and Mark leichman okay we go this is game number 46 on the tea from the USA Phil [Applause] [Music] Michelson three top 10 in 2017 so far for mil for Phil [Applause] on the tea from Italy Francesco Molinari 10th open for Frankie just the one top 10 that was the year that melson won finished tied ninth Airfield there’s his record in the the majors he was looking a bit anxious there but that would settled down a little bit but be pleased not too far for the austral out of bound Mark Lehman that’s all Aussie two top fives in his last three opens of course was in the playoff in 2015 when Zack Johnson won at the old course oh well swartson made birdie from there so it’s not the worst place in the world to be you You’ rather be left over that bunker than down the right you open up the angle into this first screen as we watch John Ram after turning that second shot beautiful touch there like he was in the heavy rck as well so controlled that very well may have had his problems at the first but an absolutely cracking t-shot from Rory at the second that’s what he needed isn’t it just find the Fairway find the green settle into the round Lee Westwood for Birdie on the first good roll start Fowler birdie chance a little left to right has he read it yes he has very nice 32 but sometimes it’s just too easy for this man sad with feeling Thomas another excellent birdie chance for Paul Casey three birdies in the first [Applause] seven John ROM this would be a nice way to get started dodgy second shot but great chip and a good pu we’ll be happy with that it’s a lot easier this afternoon this first call but it’s it’s still a whole way you’re happy with the four don’t need to make three just get out of there and move on to the second John Han first Reserve until a couple of days ago Branch Neo sadly pulled out with a rib injury got into the open and he’s taken full advantage round to 68 and that with a double bogy seven on the guard pass stroke there from Rory didn’t quite get the line right but cooa chance to keep this great start going it be five under after not quite that’s a good P nice Pace didn’t quite read it finish in the top four in the Scottish open last week and of course there has been a trend emerging over the last few years that the open Champion has played in the Scottish open on a linked course the week before could you’ll be hoping that that’s a trend that continues does make it look very easy doesn’t he just wanders around hitting these monstrous drives great iron shots his wedge game’s magnificent he certainly puts well too nice P at 30 Austin Connelly from Canada and there’s how the leaderboard looks Matt coocher now only one off the lead after just seven holes Austin Conley and Paul Casey also in three under with plenty holes left James Han with his 68 Fitzpatrick Peters and Stenson all around in one under 69 and he El still under par after 10 holes Daniel burer recent winner in the PGA Tour as we said earlier tongchai has been very unhappy with his game so far this year but that’s a pretty solid start and even past 70 the corner there stood on the corner Y is that okay yeah land on there yeah just off my left shoulder like seven or so it should be straight Paul okay M 10 yes 10 Casey there getting some good instruction from his caddy should have the shot perfectly in his mind now did he listen not really it’s always going to do that wasn’t it yeah really is a very pleasant afternoon now just a nice Seaside Breeze there’s Great Links at Ro burkdale first time we’ve been here for the the open for n years Harington the last winner back in 2008 and we’ve never had an English winner here at brockdale quite surprising statistic is a lovely picture from the third T Dustin Johnson with the arm Ro Tracer gives us the ball flight oh dear how do you legislate for that much run though I mean it landed 60 yards back he must be surprised himself that’s gone in there but definite error you got to enjoy this go swing it’s always wonderful swing sh’s biggest problem is always that when his rhythm goes a little bit he tends to to get ahead of it but when he stays in it there’s not many better go strings in the world and this one is straight down the middle and he does like playing at home never back against him in South Africa stunning record of victories in his home country straight just dropped the club a little bit on the inside there Rory pushed it into the right rough not quite settled with all of his stuff yet yet but you never know with him talking about good goal swings yeah straight down Phil Michelson on the first screen long birdie chance good part 47 now Phil Mickelson but still up there at 26 in the world you would never bet against him in a major either he’s somehow he does it every year he’s up there he’s he’s definitely up for it you never know what he’s going to shoot but he battles right to the end every time Jason day at the ninth outside birdie chance cutting through quite a bit of Fringe here oh he’s judged it well very nice long long birdie chance here for Paul Casey little bit of work left there Martin Le t-shot at the 3 12 really picturesque part three this oh about that beautiful shot there the Shing the wind to draw it in naturally tap in birdie [Applause] he’s having some great couple of years here Richard Blandon this is for Birdie on the last him well done Richard 69 oh sorry 67 even so used to everything being past 72 yeah we all do it Rory’s drawing a good lie here you can see the back of the ball anytime you can hit the back of the ball you’ve got a bit more control downwind 202 though Long Way [Applause] a little bit of control just being in the rough but should be a pretty straightforward up and down for him gy at nine birdie butt for the Masters champion that Green Jacket has done some traveling hasn’t it I’ve seen it at dinners I’ve seen it at football matches I’ve seen it at Wimbledon he’s been everywhere with it and so he should be yeah exactly so he should be everyone wants to see it now Scott for birdie well done Adam it’s actually a very good shot he’s a little bit unlucky there he’s almost caught that too well suppos a little bit downwind but don’t know how he got the ball up so quickly from that little downhill yeah I was wondering whether he could reach from from that bunker from uh DJ can do some wonderful things as we know John Ram at the second third shot for the Spaniard [Applause] did I read somewhere that he doesn’t have a driver in the back this week then he’s gone with a strong treewood uh this week as well and taking the drive out to give himself more I think he has a strong three and a and a normal free wood in the bag I thought I’d read somewhere I hadn’t heard that Thomas it wouldn’t surprise me because didn’t he turn up with two drivers at austa one year I mean he’s always got a a theory is the right clubs for the course and this is a you you could probably get away without too many drivers if you’re hitting you know a strong three-wood a lot of the guys have got one irons in the bag this week apparently this is Westwood [Applause] Mark James is out with her Marquee three ball nice to hear from you Mark hello doy it is beautiful out here sun shining can’t see an ice cream van but I might be tempted not a ult shot for Rory up and over a mound quite quick over the mound but really no problems bit surprising he actually puted that one there’s a lot of uh fringes putting through there we’ve seen quite a few players come up a little bit short Rory actually at the first patted from off the edge and left it short Dustin’s Li isn’t too bad just a gorgeous chip at the first absolutely stunning pitched it on the Sixpence this is a little more difficult I would say cuz where he’s trying to pitch it it’s a sort of a few different slopes going on I don’t think he can fly it right to the edge of the the green so I think he’s going to hit it off the back foot and just try and Chase it along the slopes but gets it within 4T this is pretty good four feet Mark exactly right very good shot great start to the tournament for [Applause] coocha surprisingly he’s only ever had one top three in a major ccher that was in the Masters five years ago and just one top 10 in the open so he’s off a j a really good week yeah that’s about the perfect line of the ninth for Paul Casey right out on that brige overlooking the whole nine screen well done Le Nicholson second shot here just in the light rough let we say good angle land this short and let it release up to the pin oh he’s flown it all the way that’s probably going to go to the Edge that is a difficult put cuz not only is it quick it’s got a huge slope on it you have to put out towards that bunker that Westwood was in W two boogies in the first three holes for r Michael Roy [Applause] nice save there from [Applause] Johnson so they walk off to the fourth T Johnson and Schwarz will both one under Michael Roy two over there’s these shoes that Thomas beor likes so much you should get a p Thomas so can they suit you be pretty good abely I love when he does that when he just he knows straight away where that ball is as soon as he’s hit it coocha with the arm lock he was a good Potter before he even went to this arm lock but um he’s certainly become one of the greatest poters in the game with this with this technique four bodies in the first six couple of pars to follow and M CER just one off the lead held by Jordan SP and Brooks kco the two American major Champions both round in 65 five under par here at Royal there and Ian palter alongside Thomas and Bland at 67 real credit to pter and Manley and noran who all played early and got some pretty horrible weather to contend with to come in with scores two or three under par in these conditions much harder than it is now good start to the defens of is clar jug by Henrik Stenson under par 69 B second shot to the ninth after a perfect t- shot little birdie here turning two under very good start for the American lovely shot just below the pin nice love p chance get him Ricky anony Kang oh great p from perfect position as well on the ninth called Casey confident about his golf at the moment and when he’s like that he is one of the best in the world there’s a spectacular view of the the seaside town of Southport berdale course just over the fence Hillside which is also a wonderful golf course in fact this whole area England’s Gulf Coast they call it some fabulous courses West lengths Southport and ndale Forbe forby Hall where Tommy Fleetwood plays his golf there’s some good football teams here Laur aren’t they well I think have to say it’s the best isn’t it Liverpool FC I forgot of course you two are Big Reds fans yeah two Liverpool fans alongside me the Klo Appreciation Society absolutely 193 Ys this per 34th Touch of wind wi maybe five yards five yards of downhill so playing about 180 so no more than a sort of a time for the big boys well that will be a very chicky tricky Chip he’s just got to land it over that bunker and let it release down not happy with that now M Roy Man United Van wish him well nonetheless maoy let see so far today lucky to be two over some inexplicably poor shots to be fair and that was a shocking swing it’s almost out of it before we take the club back incredible unfortunately it’s it’s more of the same this is really what we saw last week in in Scotland and I guess in Ireland the week before as well it just looks completely out of sorts now here’s Hawkeye with the two lines to the hole one depending on your pace I think you’ll be going closer to the blue one here Phil not sure you want want to take this one at PACE not bad at all incidentally my apologies to sunun Kang who we saw ping that part at 30 I I called him Anthony who was used to watching on the Asian tour sure Anthony would love to be here but it’s actually Sun hung Kang that is going well Scott got away with one there another yard and he’s back down the hill R now perfect t- [Music] shot straight down wind he looks like he’s hoisted that up height oh it’s a lovely shot beautiful jot a strong looking goldf swing really is looks like he’s really in control of what he’s doing buy CH for Jason day even par at the moment his feet look enormous don’t they those things must put him off looking [Applause] down Mr cut last two events Jason US Open and the and the Travelers did lose a playoff though in the uh the Byron Nelson that’s his best finish of 2017 Billy hell I think it was now Westward at the Third good distance control from Westwood we go forward to the ninth watching Adam Scott for birdie another man with a really good open record I know that might sound like a strange thing to when we all remember that awful collapse at Royal lthm a few years back but he’s been pretty much in contention regularly Over The Last 5 Years Adam nothing wrong with Dustin Johnson’s live but it’s sort of up to the middle of the green then slightly down to the hole and there’s almost a bit of grain into the first half and down the second half so it’s going to be difficult to get the pace right the line’s no no big deal at all if you get gets it within 3 ft on Pace that’ll be a pretty good effort good effort then Casey at the ninth this for a nice birdie this would be some front ninth 30 to the turn oh he’s pushed it I don’t know if he miss or pushed it but either way not his best stroke Jason day of the 11th with an iron here hand off the club straight away knew that was going right look like that was sitting down a bit just doesn’t look comfortable does it today I mean like you said earlier following on from the last couple of weeks where he’s missed both Cuts he just doesn’t look right he’s explaining everything as well and it usually means you’re trying to make excuses but I’m sure he’s not but just wants to try and get something going very quickly nichelson t- shot at third so the fourth green the first of the bar 3s here at Rell not a whole heap on this for mroy the problem for him that t-shot is just the sort of shot and swing that takes away your confidence and bringing your step and everything slightly down pretty straight he really needs to work hard to keep his head in the game right now three over after four holes I was working pretty hard with Michael Bannon as as one and only coach since he was a Youngster and I think I’m right saying he didn’t play yesterday he didn’t go out so the Assumption was that they were quite happy with the work done and that everything was set to go today doesn’t seem to be the case though as we Le Westwood’s birdie po going to be another half a leite 41 career wins and they really are around the world he’s W everywhere lead a possible exception of South America but he’s certainly one everywhere else fabulous career he just needs to round it off with that much deserved major watch John R reading this part have a wonderful shot in here for birdie doesn’t leave many puts short does he nice firm stroke there slight misread but too bad coocha now it’s almost like a path three this everyone seems to be at the top of this hill in perfect [Music] position another a lovely iron shot from coach to 15 Austin connley the Canadian third shot for Conley nicely played R Bella here winner last week to get his week off to a really good start very nice lovely if you’re just joining us whatever you’re watching around the world hopefully you’re enjoying this 146th open in the sunshine day one with SP and capka leading I have to say the way Matt ccher is going they’re unlikely still to be t for that leaderboard at the end of the day Austin Conley and Paul Casey going well a lot of golf still to be played of course last te off time is not until quarter past 4 local time and that’s still half an hour away yeah you headed up the right half of this Fairway the run out is about 240 Johnson just hitting an iron wind blowing pretty good almost straight into the play’s faces just a question of position he’s going to be slightly out of position though and into a little clumpy bit of rough we’ll be back but let’s go ahead to the 11th Jason day stay there oh [Music] stop it misses the bunker there short left so lot of green to work with oh Conn to go to four under PA well done John Ram at the fourth get I surely not brought that over here leaning a bit means he’s close to the bunker hopefully he’ll carry oh no he’s come up short the bunker oh that’s tricky he’ll be aiming this right in the center of the green Lee he’ll be too clever certainly Billy Foster will be too clever to tell him otherwise sometimes on these short path threes people get too aggressive be right the one very close sit wonderful iron shot from Westwood second and the third for Phil mikkelson he’s opened up with two pars look a little not quite up to Phil standards but not bad M coocha good birdy chance this to be out in 29 oh very nice well done it’s nothing like it is there yeah you don’t get too many of those do you that’s a lovely moment even a path 34 that’s still pretty special into a share of the lead great goal from coach up not quite all of it right yeah I’m thinking maybe kind of like nine but 10 grip cuz otherwise she spins up right was playing 75 actually one more and I think like full a time would do it it’s just probably bit crazy you can do a 9:00 one of these rev it down a bit if I just turn it in just to touch yeah off of that c the off the bucket you okay with this yes the caddy overall it’s got to be right now talking it back to me Paul though just it doesn’t feel like no rev down just rev down and turn it in fine it’s like basically nine Johnny McLaren Isn’t It Caddy experienced man Johnny Long Sox looks like it’s Johnny long boots at the moment [Applause] [Music] oh you go perfect Club Caddy’s done well there it just turns a bit it’s very [Applause] close 126 yards for Dustin Johnson not too bad a lie although he’s found about the thickest bit there is around there he can’t feel the wind the only danger here is it might move it right a bit in the air although not really that much to be honest four yards less for melroy not too bad a lie but it’s sitting just a little down not much grass around it just might squirt a bit so needs to be treated with respect not too bad PS can have a little bit of movement on it from left to right Adam Scott couple under [Music] s it did sit this is Charlie Hoffman started with a two and the first and the pop go in there he’s now back to 200 under rcky Fowler all three with longish birdie parts lovely Blue Skies over Brookdale in this Thursday afternoon John Ram second a little bit shot with the t-shot that’s not dead [Applause] was in Scottsdale Arizona where he went to college but originally from Bara in Northern Spain in The Basque country’s birdie tot on the way little bit short quite give him that one he’s prone to the odd Miss short put but hopefully not that one now Dustin Johnson very hard to keep this short oh he’s played it very well as good as he could beautiful when you can hit it as far as he does and have that sort of touch around the greens kind of hard to beat isn’t he he’s got plenty to smile about beautiful touch there from Johnson it was lying well but very downhill I mean really amazing as you were saying both schwarzer and Ma Andro ma ma Andro he’s not out there is he thank goodness we’ have to bleep out a lot of stuff uh I’ve got long downhill puts the other thing about schwarzel is he could probably bring it in from both sides it’s a sort of a slight Gully he can bring it off the shoulder of the apron or just let it feed from the other way he may of course try and hit it straight maybe I’m overthinking it but again it’s all about the pace most of the Burrows in the last sort of four or five ft it’ll tail away to his left depending on the angle of comes from that’ll dictate the amount what’s Hawkeye showing Hawkeye showing a little left to right I don’t fancy you’re right to left but uh see what you’re saying yeah at the end it’s going to come back a little bit yeah it does St coming back at the end so like you said all about the pace not going to come back from there I don’t think it’s okay though that wasn’t a bad part at all so we turn out to hold Casey birdie didn’t quite hit that one PA we’re going downhill for maroy his too might Edge left to right to start with and then come back at the end the more he gives this the more it might come back I would say about a a foot left to right should just about do it never really G a chance did he Lee Westwood after that beautiful t- shot chance to capitalize now little bit uphill this needs to hit it was a good roll didn’t break he read it to break Charlie Hoffman the man of hold his second shot at the first oh good putt you talk about yardage dropping in for the day I think he’s up there with the leaders for the day John RAM for his par at the fourth W still waiting for our first bir from this three ball RAM and Reed both won over Westwood even early on but really needs to hold this can’t be dropping another one that is just a horrific start for poor Rory I mean he can bring it back there’s no question about that but that confidence-wise he’s got to be reeling just overr that one Adam well I think there’s still a bit of stunned silence around the the course and maybe here in the commentary box as well Rory mroy 4 over after five Johnson going with driver he can carry that bunker undoubtedly but can he keep it in the Fairway once it lands yes well just off the edge but that’s not bad that’s way way down there well an eagle putt for Andrew Johnson who’s I think only his mom calls him Andrew he’s beef to everyone else and listen to the Roar of this goes in for eagle I played with him in France a few weeks ago and walking down this hole and then all of a sudden these people on the hill started going a li Bo and it was it was a great moment and he takes it in so well beef he’s a lovely character isn’t he it’s just what you see is what you get it’s just exactly as he is he’s lovely nichelson now she shot at four thrilled that’s why M Ro out with driver as well need do the fair we well that looks very tight but I think if he carries it he should do yes again in the rough but very good nonetheless such a tough hole the six par five for the members of course par four for the for the open just as the 18th is and Rory Maola really does need something good to happen he’s four overp par after five holes so he’s nine behind Jordan SMI and Brook kka and Matt cchen of course who’s only halfway through his round looking a little bit further down the the leaderboard Martin leard and Anie Al among those who are one under so is Ricky Fowler Richie Ramsey and Paul the the two Scots in fact three Scots in that page all one under early on in this opening round Rafa cabao who won so brilliantly at done Donald Lynx last week with an early birdie Gary Woodland did you notice Thomas there’s a plant a tree in a woodland playing this week hey I knew you hadn’t noticed that Alfie plant tobby tree and Gary Wood would count Sandy ly but I don’t think you can [Applause] really Tony Johnson contributes Justin Rose to the appropriate surnames I think we better stop this now it get a bit silly here’s coach [Applause] up round on the fifth a good t- shot is only a little wedge in air super [Applause] shot think about 98 wind read second shot from the perfect position you see the wind a little bit into 7 six 7 miles not too bad this morning it was a lot more than that yes not bad nice bit of spin too there’s the advantage being the Fairway much more control just didn’t quite hit it there Matt some times send on link screens to forget to hit them and then concentrate so much on the lines that’s what you do when you play golf in America all the time greens are so fast so you’re just mostly thinking about line and then you come over here and play and just forget to hit them sometimes schwortz and Johnson equidistant but deciding swartzville has the edge so he’s going to hit 182 now nrow sixth green fractionally off the left but mainly into it’s not the easiest Target to hit but they’ve hit the drives a long way up Schwartz’s ho that Miles up in the [Applause] air almost the same shot for Johnson it’s in the semi-rough but the lies are no big deal at all pretty much uh straightforward shouldn’t fly unless he’s very careless probably seeing schwarz’s held up a bit by the wind he’s going one Club longer a little bit tricky there against the collar 170 left for Rory michaelroy they need something good to happen pretty quickly and it’s not coming here well it’s it’s I’m flabbergasted I really didn’t think he would be this poor after not playing well the last two weeks working in his game the inspiration that comes with the open but he just looks completely out of sorts doesn’t he not the Rory Macaro we used to over here on 12 day with a good birdie chance lovely little pa three there yes lovely too very nice P for Phil Michelson from off the fourth green [Music] [Applause] two options or anything in between for for Lee here Thomas yeah which line do you take here I think you go for the blue one the older you [Applause] get every put straight if he hit him hard enough I don’t know I don’t get the red line I must admit blue one was the right one all day long anyway Casey perfect position on 11 stop looks like he’s pulled out a little bit oh it’s not bad though very quick P we saw a put from pter there earlier today and it’s very quick past the [Applause] hole they do talk a lot don’t they him and his caddy it’s unbelievable not quite the Danny Willet Clash but uh they talk a lot good to see Danny playing much better today incidentally no joy for John Ram he doesn’t look like he’s quite got the K of the greens yet he’s leaving everything a little bit short which is unlike [Applause] him if you have just joined us here at the open good to have you with us 146th Open Championship L Davis and Thomas bjor alongside me in the commentary box Mark James is on the golf course and we’re all scratching ahead watching Rod Melo yes it’s um pretty amazing to see him all at Sea like this bad second shot there way way left of Target both set up in sort of trodden down grass going to be an awkward sort of sand shot he’s got to play lob it onto the green and just hope the spin comes out about right [Applause] [Music] Rory go back to the Scottish open Champion Rafa for birdie go one you know a few people said that he was a bit fortunate to win that golf tournament but one thing you can say is as soon as he got the chance in the playoff he stood up and he took it that three-wood in in that playoff was absolutely Magnificent cucha the 11th T he’s got the driver out we haven’t seen too many people hit driver here oh and he’s double crossed himself that’s not going to be nice thick rough or a bunker oh you know what you might have got away with that Johnson playing his third it’s like he’s going to put it again it seems to be the club of choice not too [Applause] bad young Austin Conley just 20 years old came through final qualifying at Royal s ports had to play off for the last qualifying place and unfortunately that’s one that’s got away for he’s young got je nationality brought up in Texas but his dad’s Canadian and he’s following the Peter Uline Brooks ke L he’s coming playing in Europe on the challenge tour and on the main tour when he gets a chance and it certainly worked for these two swarts taking the more conventional route here on the six than his playing Partners birdie never hit it it on the fo what got in the way Adam Scott now long long birdie chance I’m sure he’d be very happy to get this down in to you saw from Hawkeye a little bit of left to right he’s undercooked that that’s not going to be horrible he’s probably going to have to hit that second but outside the hole as well so he’s got his work cut out R let to avide a fifth bgy in six holes oh just nothing is going right for him you got must be stunned mustn’t he he he can’t believe it well he can’t believe it I’m sure he can’t believe it no I don’t care how confident you are on your ability how good you know you are how patient You Can Be You must feel a little bit shell shocked if you’re Rory Michael Roy now walking towards the seventh t five overp par in the opening round of the old in good conditions too that’s to be said I mean it’s not like the wind’s howling you can you can certainly get some numbers going when that wind picks up but not this afternoon Johnson surveying his PO up inside right let’s run it down there don’t need Hawkeye for this one it’s nicely done good power on the six there been a lot of I think there’s been an eight and a seven and lots of fives two holes in the course which are par fives for the members par fours for the open the sixth and the 18th laa you call this one you said it was quick by the hole not sure if that was just just about everything wrong with that one lead birdie chance on 15 oh lovely very nice part right in the middle get the pace up which is very important on link screen they can get a little bit bobbly towards the end of the day David lipsky TR one of my favorite par threes in all of golf could be one of David lipskis as well great shot lipi Pops that one in which I’m sure he will he’ll move into the group at three underpar tied for four three leaders on this opening day spe kka and coocher day second shot perfect t- shot now can he produce a perfect second shot oh he’s a bit unlucky there just released downwind you have a [Applause] chance okay see back up the hill little right left it’s unlucky yeah almost hit that part too well a little bit through the brake that’s a clumsy three put bogey the master magician out of the rough be on five needs a little bit bit more Magic from filled with that bunker shop we seen a couple of guys in there and they they have gotten it up and down but it’s a it’s a soft tricky little one another one Slips Away for Adam Scott Dustin Johnson out scoring his playing Partners one under short so par and Rory of course struggling [Music] n another PA threes are easy especially when the wind’s blowing but a lot of them have got elevated te so you’re going to have a a shot into a relatively small green with runoff side side green hi bunkers and the wind blowing best with here from 219 is going to send that out to the right and try and hit a sling hook get it landing on the front and hopefully it’ll run up a l just it’s unlucky it doesn’t need to move much more and that would swept around towards the pin but lot of green to work with 164 this seventh hole pin cut tight left and Johnson’s gone down into the Gully on the left that might not be easy Club to a club and a half of wind really nice and warm and pleasant the problem when you’re in a slump is that the more the slump goes on the less time it takes in each tournament for your brain to slip into neutral and I think I hope it hasn’t happened to maroy I hope he can snap out of it but his body language is not great at the moment and these shots are pretty testing when you’re playing reasonably well so probably only a seven or eight iron for him the pressure absolutely on him now every shot and he’ll be feeling it you wouldn’t believe it would you anything that can go wrong is going wrong and it’s a tough tough Golf Course they’ve got to be on your game he just never stops to amaz you this man does he he just looks like he he’s in such control of what he does in those situations tournament leader M coacha on 11 oh out of the rough a flyer there it’s going to release it’s going to go down that Hill as well day good chance just behind the pin a little bit downhill so needs to be a bit little bit careful of pace just inside that marker now it’s oh it’s gone the other way at the end bad though ra middle of the Fairway 199 as you can see that he likes it very nice beef to round off has round great finish last year at TR when he really won hords of new fans not the easiest bunker shot for DUS Johnson oh and it was sitting down and it really did scoot on him think it was quite that hard but I’m managing it at all while Rory’s ball is sitting fine quite lucky not to come back from further up against the back lip of the circle of grass in the middle of this bunker this is just a piece of cake he should put this 4 5 ft short should just trickle up if he doesn’t get it within 3 ft it’s a very poor shot much better you can sense that the crowd really are trying to lift them can’t you yeah there’s no question nobody likes seeing these top players struggle good par settler Co lovely chip from the back of the green is to stay tied for the lead oh yes very nice long birdy attempt for schwarzel three pretty poor efforts at this all to be honest not easy but none of them very [Applause] accurate Lee westw a little bit unlucky at six at the ball just took the wrong side of that little hump there it could so easily have turned towards the [Applause] flag hely improved part of his game these last few months Lee I think every time I see him he seems to be chipping a lot better than he he has done in the past and that’s a a big thing for his game do you think that’s why he hasn’t won a major is is chipping because it seems to have let him down so much yeah he’s never been a strong part of his game I still think you know there’s a lot of lot of ifs and little things have done him that he hasn’t won he’s been there so many times and I don’t know he he seems to be such a great player from tto Green he should really have won one but sometimes it just doesn’t really happen for for certain people that’s better John Ram maybe just beginning to find the pace of the greens first birdie of the day back to even [Applause] par day T shot to the 14th little bit of right to left wind set it out in the middle hopefully get the wind bring it back that’s beautiful lovely [Applause] shot power saving part for the world number [Music] one bogy on the C for DJ we know [Applause] see if Paul Casey can roll one in it after three poting number 11 was a big swinging po there [Applause] an ‘s going along well in this opening round this for a birdie for the Great South African well done Ernie and have Ernie does get that cutter behaving he’s going to be a factor this week no doubt about that he moves to two [Applause] under beautiful sunny afternoon such a contrast to the difficult conditions first thing this morning when the 146th open got underway but it really is lovely now and three men are tied for the lead at five underpar John Ram [Applause] there bunkers on the right 308 to 320 five to carry the last one nothing on the left after 270 must be very tempting to just it over everything get it up there within 50 short of the green but if you hit a bad one goodness me have far up the hill as that one Jess well difficult to tell there’s a lot of people between me and the ball I shall find out and report back God Rory is just really struggling you can only feel for him well DJ uh seemingly certainly today a bit straighter than Rory but he may be having second thoughts I think DJ can almost hit an iron over the 270 bunker on the corner and get it way up there think they may be overplaying the hand a bit such a wonderful FL athletic freewheeling swing isn’t it world number one safely on The Fairway eight now back to the par 37th and Lee Westwood all pars so far for Lee well A procession of top offers in the commentary box continues Thomas BJ and Laura Davis have gone for the moment Tony Johnson’s back and alongside him former Masters champion Trevor imman Trevor welcome oh thanks so much doie it’s great to be joining you guys there’s never been a day at the open that wasn’t fascinating I don’t suppose but uh you just can’t take your eyes off this can you so great to be here fantastic weather this afternoon for these guys yeah I think the morning GS will feel a little grieved cooch just flying along and they’re saying it’s good it was right down the banner your dread I think Trev when you’ve had a bad first morning weatherwise and it’s good in the afternoon you think well it’s probably going to carry on and be good tomorrow morning and then blow a hulie in the afternoon and it’s depressing isn’t it it’s definitely one of those things about the open that you’re going to have to get used to during your career this young man is really impressing Austin Connelly just 20 years old tchs enough Canadian Heritage he’s got jeel nationality playing his trade in the European challenge tour qualifier for the open and he’s right up there only two off the lead former Champion Paul Lori second birdie of the round that was a test for these 44 year old hips when you come to the open you know that at some point you’re going to get a lie like that I’ve got a horrible feeling that no matter how good the scoring has been and will be for the rest of the day the talking point today is going to be Rory mroy again Tony isn’t it sadly so not for the right reasons have a look at that lie that Don RS found here I mean talk about a fried egg he’s going to go with a square face to avoid getting too much bounce on it he’s going to just drop this down steeply behind the ball and just hasn’t even managed to get it out the sand it’s uh he’s got to stay calm Trev because he’s got quite a short fuse he sure does it’s uh one of the things that I think you’ll have to work on as he matures in the game but isn’t it so unusual to see a plug lie on a lyx golf course just not something you see very often no it really isn’t I think comes in from such a frightening height with the way these guys HED these days Jason day the 14th the high top sneakers Tony you’d look great in a pair of those Trev the only thing is I’m so short that those would actually come up to my armpits right CER one of our three joint leaders if I can knock this one in at 12 take the lead on his own oh he’s got the line oh that’s cruel tell you what I really do Fen these chances around this golf course at burkdale where length is not such a big factor such an accurate player and of course he played last week in Scotland and we all know that Trend over the last few years is for the players who have played the week before on a links course to have an advantage coach has got that and that’s how you recover leave it in the sand out of a horrible R and back off couple of deep breaths calm down and then stiff it Mickelson was bunking off the te at six and has this long range putt for a par and leaves himself a bit more work to do Charles Schwarz were playing 135 straight downwind simple enough wedge and rather nicely played melroy’s ball is in an interesting spot he’s actually got more than Johnson but it looks like Johnson’s going to give it a whack the B this gentleman here I’m not sure Rory’s going to play he may be asking for ruling seems to be a holder sort of a path but it just spectator path balls on the edge of a a sort of a Cliff if he addresses it when his body’s pointing in the right direction the ball’s 2 feet above his feet he just can’t get anything on it he can stand up on the ledge and play the ball a foot behind his back foot shut the face wickedly and hope the ball misses both his legs and goes to the Target he’s not doing that I think he’s just lobbing it out sideways okay you want to give the good yeah no yeah quiet please he must have put the club Behind the ball and thought well I really can’t do much with that however I stand so probably the best option once again just struggling to get momentum there ferari yeah it’s just not happening is it really isn’t Westwood at 7 60 fr P after having that awkward line in the bunker and at least one shot departs coming out of this whispy rough sometimes tough to judge the speed at which the ball’s going to come out can get Flyers it’s tough isn’t it you know since the the mes change you’re never sure whether it’s a flyer or dead it’s actually made it tougher Mickelson for a bogy using the claw grip to Perfection that time 92 left for maroy nothing too wrong with the lie just a question of working out how much it’s going to release when it lands and give it plenty of air he’s given himself a chance at least but it’s just been the most horrible start to an Open Championship it’s amazing game when you just consider we’ve just seen Matt cucha go out in 29 and Rory’s going to have that putt to stay at five over off R holes trouble is the confidence is going to start taking a dent once you start losing self-belief it just gets harder and harder Scotty steep lipped little pot bunker but on the UPS slope which will help and he can carry this all the way there it won’t run far pretty good effort [Music] Co just trying to keep it short of that bunker down the left hand side he is such an accurate player so consistent yeah holds where other guys are hitting hybrids and three WS he just he never doubts himself with his accuracy just threads it through there tough one to read Jess Pace wise yeah it’s um much longer birdy attempt than he would have liked obies no question about that it’s going to come a bit from the right over the whole length I think might add up to foot and a half total as you say it’s it’s the pace that’s crucial here and really not a realistic bir opportunity at all now such a good cut great touch three here wind will be coming into them let’s see if Phil goes with that abbreviated follow through that he likes so much what are you doing seen a lot of guys in the bunkers here seven yeah it’s been uh it’s just not easy is that the front left pin too hard to get at this is very hble forer Rory 15 ft slightly up but not a whole heap on it but every chance he could leave here with a four excellent and you know what it’s just a par but that might just be the little kickart just that little surge of hello I do know how to do do this just hanging there knowing that those two FS are coming late in the day and he has plenty power to be able to reach them and all the talent in the world JP will be just having a little word with him look it’s early days long way too schwartzel one over can he get it back to even [Applause] [Applause] [Music] goalkeeper Trev I always felt this guy had the game to to grab a major don’t you absolutely I love everything about his game he’s been on top form here over the last 12 months or so playing in the US come on Ernie let’s see a nice smooth stroke here oh my my my thank goodness he’s found a way to putt and that is just brutal there are moles that don’t dig that deep Trev you know I think because they coming into the breeze from an elevated tea that ball is coming in with so much spin there on the seventh hole remember Ram’s ball plugging but now the master let’s see what he can do tell you what just could not have played that any better he actually risked Landing in into a little up slope he’s so you can see how pleased he is with that that was just a fantastic bunker shot from that lie almost almost as good as you from the bunkers Tony oh let’s not get carried away now oh he’s a wizard isn’t he Scotty this would be an excellent up and down from the sand as well man he’s using a new putter this week just hasn’t quite been able to get some momentum if this man had Jordan spe’s putter he would have five or six Mages by now I think that’s unquestionable golman to Die For Good course management does everything so well just the patter week in a week out isn’t as good as it should be just an IR for these boys today phoh nar’s in farway Narrows in at about 285 just trying to punt it up there quite blind this t- shot wind right to left across and down but awkward to actually hit the short stuff that’s a beauty for meloy I love seeing the shape on that shot there I think for Rory to get some confidence back again he has to go back to playing that draw shot that’s one in four majors so far in his young career I think you’re right Trevor um it’s a symptom of not playing well you sort of just try and cut it isn’t it and get the ball round as Dustin goes with a long iron as [Applause] well okay just clings on Casey par 314 beautiful par three here down the hill got a full view of the green and all the bunkers surrounding it and another high quality Iron Shop from PA such a simple golf SP you always wonder how can anything actually go wrong with Mark leichman Mark and his wife had their third child last week and if that one make you smile holding CS like that well yeah I caught up with them yesterday so you know after what they’ve been through Audrey and know she we know she had serious health issues I mean it was it was really dire and they’ve come through that and they’ve got I got the new baby and life is magical and Well Done Audrey we’ll be thinking about you sure you’re listening Jason likes to play these shots very stiff wristed no wrist hinge turns his chest aggressively through [Music] impact one Groove too low Tony yeah exactly he knew instantly didn’t he just hadn’t hadn’t got it you saw drove that very stiff wristed chipping and P pitching action it’s unusual Scotty just can’t love watching this action oh Majestic what an up and down this would be now he knew off the t-shot that he would be struggling back to back Bogies and two over look at the color of that Sky Three Man Tie K cooa still with six holes to go good play out there poter out in the early miserable weather lot of guys just just a great leaderboard isn’t it nor and matama just who do you pick little too early in the game for me to make my pick I don’t like to commit that early Tony but I will say this Royal burkdale has been very friendly to Americans over the years of uh the all the opens held here five American winners so uh not too surprised to see three Americans at the top howong Lee playing well again South Africa’s Brandon Grace out early this morning shooting even par yeah that was good work don’t vburger even par another huge Talent Ricky Fowler even after 13 a lot of people’s favorite for this week he gets Lynx Golf and he can play every shot in the book Bubba playing nicely even after six not very late there JB Krueger has only played two holes it’s going to be a long late evening just a who’s who isn’t it the top 60 guys who’s who of golf very good effort there by Tom Layman out here compe with the Young Bucks yeah actually walked a few holes with Tom in the practice rounds and he was excited to be back loves Lynx golf loves the championship 154 for Char schwarzel danger here is coming up short or rolling off left wind just seems to be gusting up a minute right now oh that’s a lovely shot though judg to perfect caught up with charl earlier in the in the year and he he told me that he made all his clubs heavier Tony felt like it helped his rhythm was quite interesting yeah I do that with uh with mud 146 for meloy hopefully he’s going for the draw again better it’s quite painful to watch Rory struggling like this it really is because we know what a talent he is I think the thing that makes it frustrating is that his good golf is as good as what Tiger’s golf was but we just don’t quite see it as often so we expect to see it more and more so maybe the problems with us but uh we know how prodigious his talent is P for Johnson good lie just in the semi- rough oh this looks as though it could be ballooning ooh dear unlucky yeah just stalled into a little bit of Breeze it feeds off down the front it’s quite steep too quite a steep drop off hence we didn’t even see the bore here awkward third at least he’ll be chopping up the hill should be able to be aggressive with it day for birdie at the first of just two par fives on this golf course you wait 15 holes and then you have two in three holes and that was dead online sander Shuley winner in green Bri a couple weeks back it’s how he punched his ticket here to the open with shots like that Tony got his first win on the PJ to in his rookie season that’s pretty impressive isn’t it striping a CO with his birdie effort and will it get there no very he surprised that he’s got such a poor record in open championships like you Trevor admire his accuracy his distance control Johnson looking at what I think is a seashell a few inches behind his ball but he doesn’t really need to move it downhill lie not the easiest but the ball is sitting well he could have been a little unluckier with the live for sure but still a pretty awkward shot wow that was played by a man who knows what he’s doing in sand didn’t quite get up there but that was very impressive a smart shot wasn’t it I thought he had avoided that sound but uh left himself a tough one Scotty look at white to left good stroke just under red I think two holes in a row where he’s caught the edge look pretty good halfway there this is the kind of thing that wears on you hit good shot after good shot can’t quite convert I was talking to Adam hadwin yesterday and he was saying the same thing the the margins are so small and you have three Rim outs that that so one day they go in the next day they stay out and it’s the depth of talent in these fields now is so deep it’s it’s minuscule amounts great atmosphere out here there’s a big crowd following these boys around and they are trying to encourage Rory he’s given them precious little yet straight butt for schwarzel as far as I can tell uphill really good opportunity for another birdie it’s always interesting to me to see how many players leave puts short at the open just not quite used to the speed of the greens yeah only 9 F6 on the stump meter this morning and they just worried about the potential of winds to come up to 30 30 or 40 m hour a lot of these greens raised and the wind catches them so they’ve got to be a little careful just right Edge for Rory could get away from him if he’s over zealous but I think his cutting stroke looks really good at the moment TR but I I’m convinced that his reading of greens is the biggest problem on the greens to me just looks like he’s overthinking it a little bit I’d just like to see him get out there and free it up a bit more this one will be hit hard Tony yes it’s going to take a bruising but he’s try to jump on it and HED it left oh well hang on not that bad is it especially with a nice friendly bounce that’s now very good must be nice when your bad shots end up on The Fairway I’d love that problem yes and 3:30 DJ poat oh yes good all round p as they say in the classics and stays at even par [Music] beautiful view here of 14 down the hill see if Matt’s trying to hold one up against the saying be good [Applause] lead Eagle P at 17 we have seen a few Eagles at 17 today so guys are taking advantage of the opportunity of downwind par five yes Tony it amazes me out on tour nowadays how many different grips we see guys using on their Putters yes what the actual putter grips themselves or the or or and the way they’re putting their hands on absolutely I mean there are just so many different ways of handling the just a claw grip on its own it is absolutely amazing it’s almost unusual to see an orthodox grip these days had three guys SL at the top yeah I’m with you d i just uh you know week to week the guys change you know how from the pencil to the claw to the left the right I can’t really keep up with it but uh that’s the old story isn’t it whatever works for you that’s the answer you even see a player of Phil Mickelson’s caliber who will go conventional and the claw just depending on how he’s feeling or if it’s an uphill or a downhill putt looking at some scores here beef shooting one under 69 he’ll be out in the first group tomorrow I believe he might beat the bad weather with a bit of luck they say it’s going to be quite tough and quite harsh out there tomorrow another variation on how to hold a putter up the left forearm and on this occasion just not getting the pace right he will have the opportunity to separate himself a little bit with those two par FS to come should be able to reach them both well the bunker raker is finished his duties for the match in front short s about to head long iron Bunker’s left start at 230 bunker right’s 240 to reach it so just playing for position only 400 yards or just under today this hole anything on The Fairway pretty much does the job that is perfect from Schwarz good distance up well a couple of better shots from Rory at the last hole but now it’s a left to right wind and into so a little more testing oh I think I better take cover all [Music] right d yeah a good go at me I’m not that huge a Target though fortunately he’s fine just where the spectators have been as they huddle around in a conglomeration that’s it’s just so wide with an iron though Jess that was miles out wasn’t it miles out I know it’s like the minute he because he’s fading it it’s just got no control in a left or right wind he he should rip a draw in this wind on this hole I’m not sure what DJ’s doing I can see he’s got a long iron looks perfect yeah beautiful yeah there seems to be this compulsion by players TR to mess around with their natural shape you know they they they’re successful and then they want to change it for some reason we’ll just go to The Big Easy and that bunker must be deep if we can only see half of Ernie he’s about 10t tall I believe nicely played and but I think those are the sort of Bunker shots he really likes because he sets up open but takes the club away Square to the ball comes in very shallow excellent at those High softies David lipsky to get to three under well done three birdies one drop fantastic crowds and a lot of the sweaters are off it’s warmed up it is just glorious out there just going back to what we were discussing with Rory earlier when I walked with him in the practice rounds just seemed like he was struggling with that shot out out to the right and uh man I wanted to go and tap him on the shoulder and say come on let’s see some of those drawers like the old days hopefully it comes soon yeah I think I think with Rory and I don’t think I’m being unfair but I think I think he struggles to take advice you know I think he’s his own man and you know you could say he’s obstinate but I think he’s just intent on doing things his way but there comes a time where you know maybe some advice from people who care would would not go a Miss Young American Tony fena with an even past 70 he wouldn’t have seen much Lynx golf so far in his career well done to him westwards made the same mistake as Dustin Johnson come up short of the green but he’s avoided the sand and opting to putt it this is such a steep slope wow that is well judged that shot just epitomized link scl didn’t it doesn’t it running it around the bunker fantastic and don’t under hit it because it’ll head off left to a wall of death and back into the bunker Jason day third shot at 16 another one of these elevated green steep slope tough to get a close off Perfect Light let alone out of the rough [Music] over to 10 Fairway again and Rory’s come up with pretty tasty lie here Jess yeah absolutely no problem at all just not meant to be played quite in that much of a dog but as you say the LI is perfect 185 he’s got into the wind beenin reasonably well back left it’s not hugely difficult shot but if you get it wrong there’s some gnarly rough both sides of this green the way he’s playing I mean who knows this may feel a very difficult shot with the wind straight into your [Music] face serly the 157 for Dustin Johnson just have a quick look at this swing of maoy it have to be a better man than I am tr to working why it’s so off key today that was a decent one always amazing to see that shaft deflection through impact you don’t feel it as a player but when you see it in slowmo amazing sight DJ [Applause] fantastic ball Striker Charlie Hoffman got his green glove on as always hold the second shot and number one today that gets you off to a nice start yeah nice way to start an Open Championship from not that far away from the out of Bones fans Jason day to save [Music] [Applause] par now you see cooch always aims way to the right pulls it back online on this occasion failing to do so just looked like he picked that up very quickly but steeper and sharper on the way back than normal cooch 146 left for [Music] charl oh lovely Iron Shop such a beautiful rhythmic swing to watch so much power and elegance in it when he’s on song Trevor he’s he’s as good as anyone isn’t he and it’s been like that since he was a teenager fantastic swing always put a good strike on the ball lovely aerial view of the Great Links of Royal burdale we’re here for the first time in nine years for the Open Championship since P Harrington’s win back in 2008 next year we’re on to cani then to Royal St Georges sorry then to Royal Port rush and then to ro St George’s Martin L for par complete horseshoe that’s tough my mother always used to say that uh when she saw putts lip out she wished we could just walk up and drop the ball in the hole I’m sure Martin feels like that right now only a mother could feel feel that pretty good start though for Martin something good has to happen for Rory I’m not suggesting he necessarily going to hold this but he does need to get something going it’s good putt from that far off to get the speed up the hill nice save after that t-shot yeah he must be thinking you know if I can just sneak three or maybe four back on this back nine I’m capable of doing it put in a a sensible score and then start all over again tomorrow two Pi FS to come maybe Chuck and Eagle in there we know you can do it Rory gentle right to left for Dustin Johnson probably no more than two cups total good second Shots by all the players to be fair Rory was absolutely smacked down the pin from DJ pin high right probably the least holdable of the three obviously schwarzel is very holdable Rory’s part wasn’t looked quite inviting even though it was 40 ft but this is going to move a little bit and’ll be just difficult enough to judge I’m thinking he’s just going to lag this up which is exactly what he does Smart PT now these are the kinds of shots you can put a nice crisp strike on it get a ton of spin beautifully executed those sort of shots of linkx turf Trevor it’s just heaven isn’t it just Heaven do again I went for a walk around on Tuesday and you know as as your shoes hit that legs Turf you just think oh maybe I should get the bats out again and come on retirement it’s just such a pleasure always nice when you feel like you can hit that down on it and squeeze the ball against the turf and he does week in and week out strikes the ball beautifully but it’s all down to the pting with Char he’s probably you’d have to say an inconsistent pter never particularly horrible but a bit hot and cold when he’s hot he can win anything now this man is a great putter Tony always a little anxious when he’s watching it he made a hole in one in one of the practice rounds I believe yeah 14 I think it was TR wasn’t it I think yeah I’ll be tracking him down for my drink wonder if Ryan Fox had to buy drink last week in Scotland one of the more unusual Falls in one well done Charlie birdie at 14 and he moves to fall under just one [Applause] behind and not often we see a hole in one with a Mulligan’s see did Ernie’s uh gone with driver off the T all the way down there coming out of the wispy rough let’s see if he can control the distance there’s a little Ridge there runs into that Swale seen many players back there today chance for Paul Casey Ricky fowers in for bogy here at 15 one of the great open quotes came on this hole from Lee Travino back in 1971 he said at 15 we put the bag down to hunt for a ball we found the ball lost the bag I think the rough was a little bit thick that year that happens to me every week doy oh that’s buried itself he wanted it he was asking it to get down and it did it’s a very different picture from 6:30 this morning isn’t it one of the great things about the Open Championship you see all these people just crowding around the tea boxes oh he’s a fantastic atmosphere not the easiest t- shot for these players tray into a little off the left and oh that was very fortunate indeed 285 to carry that bunker so it’s a little bit of wind these players normally carry it 300 to 320 that looked a better swing je certainly a better ball flight yeah I mean sort of that that bunker is not that bad a shot it’s not a monstrous Gap they’re aiming at that far up so yeah certainly give him a half decent shot there trouble is the way things are going expect expect to see it plumet under the lip and try to bury itself down to Australia third one’s on its way [Applause] Perfecto actually saw DJ uh testing some different drivers on the Range yesterday I was quite surprised by that Scotty poat at par five 15 makes it well done they with just two par fives do not want to be giving shots away on them you want to be birding them but next best thing last year’s runner up in that epic final day battle with Henrik Stenson couple over today though Phil I really do fancy his chances this week I like the idea of taking the driver out the bag I think he’s a very underrated iron player I think he’s going to be uh near they come Sunday and he El and the swill at the back of 18 it left himself with one of [Applause] those C of John Ram good lie in the right [Applause] rough man I love watching this guy play the [Applause] again I think Trev I think he could be number one in the world within the next 12 months that young man I think he’s just superb 100% agreement with you there no weaknesses to his game Master’s champ for par sh you another who’s having a difficult day getting married next week in [Applause] Dallas Angela heading off Angeles planned the wedding so just says all I’m thinking about is the open that’s how it looks Jordan SMI Brooks kka Matt coocher all and five under par coo still with four to play Charlie Hoffman’s just one back and a number of players at three under Kevin n Zer shle after a good start y L has had a pretty quiet season in the European tour two under after 15 St Manley finished 33 for his 68 that was early today in the worst of the weather early on Rafa Cabrera B who won so brilliantly last week two under through eight three holes to go for Paul Casey dog leg right 16th not too much rough down the left side so there’s some room down there he doesn’t need it right down the middle to 18 come on Annie knock it in a groan of disappointment from the galleries he’s still one of the most popular players who ever played the game and everyone delighted to see him playing so well a boogie at the last still take a 68 tough life for Charles schwarzel I wouldn’t be able to reach from this lie but he’s a bit stronger than me and he’s close but not quite simple chip though you got this wiry grass I mean look the club head actually stops the shaft keeps going quite a shock Factor digging it out of that stuff Nic be done by DJ G straight down the banner 143 for mroy oh chance to hit this close was an awful lot of narly rough just left of the pin so anything attacking and hooked is a real danger signal on this hole that looked a good swing to me Tony more free flowing through the impact area that full flighted finish that we used to seeing from Rory like the look at that yeah you wonder if there just too much clutter up in the cranium at the moment I think with all tour Pros you get to a point where you feel like you should just stick a vacuum cleaner in your ear and just suck all the garbage out and start fresh you should patent that idea I like it take away the last 25 swing thoughts you can leave a few but take away the last 25 swing thoughts well five under leads if he can pick up two or three shots in the way in and who knows capable of wondrous things as we know Rory here’s one of those leaders it’s pretty well played actually unlucky that it dug in that quickly got it coming in nice and low out the rough you’d expected to release a little more just things like that with Matt cucha leaving himself on the right side to be able to attack that flag smart player just a little bit too much Pace to take the break from Kevin n been a really disappointing day for several players inevitably there always are in the open but you feel for Tommy Fleetwood so much expectations so much pressure on Tommy and and Lou us Hazen a 788 over for Louie with an eight on the card of the 15th k for his part no caught up with Lou yesterday he’s uh just come from a 4-we hunting trip down in South Africa had the beard to match not a difficult chip for schwarzel there’s a ridge that goes diagonally across the screen probably pitch it into it it’ll skip left and over and run out left to right at the end not bad at all from there wonderful touch one of these players that prefers to chip with a glove off feels he just gets a little bit better feel in the fingers it’s funny how tour players come up with these little idiosyncrasies glove on glove off some guys like to putt with the glove on remember Jack Nicholas putting quite well with a glove on Tony yeah it wasn’t bad was it decent amount of success yeah I always puted with a glove on cuz I like a glove really tight so if I took it off every hole it sort of stretches it by the end of the round if it’s or halfway around it’s just sort of the size too big a DJ good opportunity here this really will not do an awful lot maybe left Edge oh just stopped turning mooy couldn’t have a much easier P uphill right look at Dead we or firm just inside two good swings two guys were saying off the TM second shot and not the easiest second shot in the world you know if you’re a little unnerved crowd huge cheer when Rory hit that second shot really willing him to do so well he must be able to feel it [Applause] ah the relief Lor Michel Roy’s first birdie of the day had to Wi 11 holes for it but it followed a beautiful second shot and a good drive so hopefully maybe he has found something and can start to undo some of the damage that he did early on Casey second into 16 a laser beautiful shot table top green there on 16 not a big Target so that really was fantastic into the breeze Jason day even par but a chance for a birdie here at the par five1 17th and even in his press conference that’s what he alluded to just not quite making as many putts as 2015 and 2016 here’s [Music] Ricky that’ll do quite nicely thank you Mr farler one over for the day Ricky Westwood to get back to even lot of of support for Lee understandably the short at seven gets it back at [Applause] 10 Micha Ro Johnson and will crunching their way up to the pa the 12th one of the best path threes you’ll find anywhere lovely hole there’s an indication of the the wind direction blowing in a fairly steady 10 to 15 mil hour today perfectly manageable just a nice lynxy breeze we’re told that tomorrow’s weather might not be quite so good [Applause] [Applause] it’s one of those days for Adam couple under on the front line but two over on the back this is Le Westward on [Music] 11 not been a great year for Lee I have to say and that’s gone left Oh Long Way left over the spectators and that could be some pretty thick stuff for Lee he’s only had a couple of top 10 in 2017 must have cut the Irish open last time out so not on top form but when he gets the the scent of sea a in his nostrils he always finds something now Casey for a birdie well done PA the great Dennis hon has join me has seen more open championships than most of us have read about thank you very much to again I like that seea air in his nostrils get him going on like that been some wonderful Golf and some tough golf but all in all has been A Grand Day David lipsky the European tour regular American going well he’s in three under for the group in front have just cleared the green their onour is heading off with them we’re faffing around a okay we playing at 175 yards today the 12th all 18 Paces into the green four from the left the breeze has been coming across the players from the right and slightly helping but it has died away a lot might hold it up again against that breeze a little Roar another cracking iron shot maybe maybe it’s coming back good job Ricky Fowler took it back to even for the day on 16 [Applause] how look well for the same price I’ve now got two South Africans in the Box beside me because I’ve been joined by the former European number one the great Dale Hayes welcome hazy thank you very much as you watch Charles swatzel you see too many bit golf swings in this o o unlucky they catch you that guy might well have run down the bank but hit the Marshall and now he’s got a devilish difficult little chip got the Marshall on his best [Laughter] side it’s just beautiful playing conditions now for an Open Championship when you want a little wind on a glorious lyns like this I mean that’s absolutely what you would have wanted isn’t it it really is and it’s just one of the most beautiful golf courses you could ever wish to visit oh he straight over the top of the flag SE for Dustin Johnson slow putt back from there Jason da second shot into the final hole what an interesting outfit I don’t know whe I’ve got those shoes in your size Dale but I know you will be ordering them I’m not sure they got the ankle size from either though how about the I think I’d look quite cute in those SS Charlie Hoffman got the day after spectacular start by holding his second at the first and has continued to play well oh he’s judged this nicely run on having such a good year on the PGA tour as well featured in the hoga featured in the US Open I think I really set the course out beautifully the rough is not too severe if you’re really wild or right you can get a shocking lie but they’ve left it really playable for the guys and the opportunity to hit shot and Matt cush has played wonderfully up in 29 500 fabulous gol yeah I think we have to praise the RNA because the course set up for the open for the last oh 68 years has been absolutely spoton they let the weather dictate it they don’t try and trick it up and I think that’s absolutely the way it should be and they’re not worried about low scores low scores mean that the golf course is is in great condition and these guys are the best golfers in the world they’re supposed to shoot low scores good sound it’s in good shape just short of the green fairly easy pit shot I think those of us who watched Matt last week at done Donald links in the in the Scottish open where he finished top four felt he was getting absolutely the ideal preparation and was always going to be worth keeping an eye on this week so it’s proved so far looks like the horrible lie that swaters caught look that the grass going back over the ball D you a genius at one time but this is a tough shot for anybody I would play this under in assume name into the window anything helping him a little bit the window has dropped that’s well there’s not much he could do just caught the down slub sending it shooting by but what a horrible line to find yeah he took another swing at it I thought it was a pretty good shot that’s not far away that’s not too bad Hoffman to share the lead at 5 under the bar y you have to wait until the 15th to find a par five so it’s always nice to take advantage of it another one comes up at 17 we go back to Dustin Johnson at the p 3 12 back of the green this has been a slow putt he’s just off the edge of the green but in a big swing from his left not too many people have read this putt correctly is a been at way left you watch the swing go Y and that’s also been the popular spot short David lipsky European tour winner from the USA it starts to turn doesn’t quite get the legs but that’s [Applause] okay well they got his first 30 of the round at 11 he can follow it with another one here might just spark a spectacular running that’s up up not too much in it hit it hit it hit it oh just slightly wrong with the pace a little fir on that line it was right right in the middle [Applause] we saw Le Westwoods pulled t-shot at 11 and uh this is now his fourth shot and he’s near the [Music] green pretty near the flag book and the part of this with the is quite severe and there’ve been several Double B sixs on hold during the course of the day but let’s go back to Kusa 16 oh nicely done see that top there on the side it’s got work day what do you think he wears on Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays swle now for Po and this will be very special well done it couldn’t really been easy to get upset by that lie that he had and he really did remarkably excellent his brother his younger brother who’s also a professional played on the tour cting for him ram ram at 11 CH have quite a big slope and swing from the left handled very nicely Kevin no for his thir his third shot at the ninth and is that going to reach perfect line that’s a super shot a very steep Bank in the front of that green really played that well it’s sort of coming down Breeze too huge stands around the 18th and the white Art Deco clubhouse at ronal berdale unique atmosphere the 18th of the open championships greatest Arenas in sport expecting record crowds last that the most people ever come and watch here at uh in 2008 just over 200,000 people yeah they’re expecting around 2000 225,000 aren’t they D alltime Record or the the top two crowds ever still held by St Andrews not surprisingly the last two opens at St Andrew both up around about 240,000 when Hatchi you know when haty first played 1954 they only had 32,000 people sure and then he had one bus up at the top with the public toilets right on the way to Hillside golf club just over the hill from here and actually if you hadn’t arrived they would have had 31,900 y Jason they with a classy finish right across the 18 green nice after the three FES I hold before that now yeah be happy with that 69 one on dep he’s not going to be all that far away at the end of the day disappointing day for saio though master champion get in no he’s done it as well let’s see if that’s put a smile on his face that’s the old song isn’t anything you can do any after got a shocky lie in the first hole when he pulled an nine off that te and made five but he had to struggle here’s a Scotsman foui Richie Ramsey third at the 16th qualified to play here at the Irish open two weeks ago and all the knocking them in from all over the [Applause] course moves to two under last Scot to win the open of course was Paul L at KUSI in 99 last Englishman was Nick fdos seven years before that looks like Casey second to the par five 17 I the two par FS on the course and the back nine and that’s a cracking shot again well done a lot of people fing him to lift the carrot jug this week he’s never looked comfortable on the greens today lot of people tipping John Ram to win the open it’s only his second appearance he was down the field 59th last year in his open debut very rare to winning just your second appearance but he’s a huge Talent if anything that Co down last week with the part just never hold enough T played beautifully and really solid solid golf today andman is coming up not a drop shot W be many players who are able to say that at the end of the day coer and Hoffman with a chance to overtake spe and kka who in the clubhouse with a five under par total in this opening day David lipsky going well one to play at three under Paul Casey as we saw also three under and polter absolutely thrilled after his disappointment in Scotland last week to shoot 67 Kevin n Only just turning onto the back nine he’s on three under and he El’s disappointing bogie at the last but a a 68 for two underpar and he did look comfortable out there today really it was nice to see not so many Twitches in the back so hopefully it’s not giving him any trouble defending Champion Henrik Stenson 69 one underpar halves of 34 and 36 here at Ronald berdale just a two par fives the 15th and 17th that’s Charles schwartzel in the group at one under Brandon Grace was one of my fancies for this week opening up with an even P 70 just an need or two in the rough Charli Hoffman stay up there going to run all the way down the bank get in the bunker in the bunker maybe oopsies oops that was unlucky doesn’t have any sort of open record at all Charlie Hoffman just been been checking he’s played in at uh six times he’s missed the cut three times and he’s best finished tied for 35th in his first appearance way back in 2007 so he’ll be delighted to have played as well as he has today Scott at the 17th third shot at the par five come on very nice Rory second shot into this 13th green got to avoid that bunker on the front right there try and get over that it’s headed that way I think not beautifully played fabulous IR shot been coming down Bree but a nice big parle 505 yards remember you’ve asked once in this hole whether you couldn’t aim further right and one Championship here all those years ago 98 for Dustin Johnson out driven by quite a long way by Schwarz who hit it 402 down here distracted by something there but it was a pretty good shot Sailing Away In The Wind Through the back for DJ more and more players like long driving champions aren’t they like the 400 yd Drive Paul Casey with an eagle chance at 70 came close in louio tas’s year 2010 on the old course at St Andrews so after that 402 yard bazooka from schwarzel 103 to this back pin not really protected by a whole Heat this pin there’s a slight Ridge halfway up the green on the right but he can punch it low punch it into the front half of the green it Should Skip over that Ridge to where mooy’s ball is and then just sort of Peter out towards the hole wi straight behind not a difficult shot just need the touch trying to fly all the way and stop it quickly he’s done it pretty well that is perfect striking to pull the ball back coming down wind I think that’s unbelievable fantastic shot now I can’t believe he’s not happy with that back to the 12th with KNE Westwood and happily he managed to make a five he hold that put off that super pitch at 11 and has been playing some lovely Golf and shots like that of f com great just an iron off the 18th for Paul Casey see way above the Fairway here at 18 downwind firm Fairways 473 yards and that what get there quite comfortably with a couple of iron shots just in the semi now Hoffman we saw his ball run all the way back into the 16th into that bunker got to carried all the way up onto the green and he’s done [Applause] well if you remember when he came out on tour he had very long blond hair looked like a looked like a surfer Californian Surfer but so did you is he but I had a much bigger surfboard Justin Johnson was a little unlucky there decent strike just bounded on left him a not very holdable putt probably 35 ft bright to left it is uphill that doesn’t make it any easier it’s just the sort you don’t have a dart at and suddenly get hyper confident so I expect to see him just dribble this up somewhere near the hle side and move on to the next beautiful camera work Mark called it absolutely perfect well done super f [Music] ah can Charlie save his PA slly downhill started just outside right he’s done that as he given enough so close only the second boggy of the day for Charlie Hoffman he drops out of the lead back to 4 under alongside Paul Casey I’m just talking to a bunch of Charles schwarzel supporters well under the age of about 12 they’ll have to wait a minute as Rory puts maybe a little bit of fade I think oh no it’s coming the other way well just a hair the other way unlucky it was a lovely p that could so easily been three birdies in the row but he’s getting the [Applause] idea now off that beautiful second shot from the sh this is for his birdie imagine just on the right Edge beautifully [Applause] home the power five 17th Matt cucher new green since we were last here leveled out a little bit by m hot and that’s going to find the bunker that’s interesting you know that the the the changes to this golf course have always done by a been done by a member of the Hy family three generations this David lipsky on the final hole today and oh nearly he’s played very well two under 68 for David y that was well received the Galler has enjoyed that budie from Lee Westwood only has second of their own gets them back to even though this is Kevin n just off tin green trying for [Applause] bird3 hold your line and come so nearly good [Applause] effort glorious Sunny evening just about 6:00 local time here in the northwest of England there’s how the leaderboard looks in this 14 six Open Championship coacher Casey and Hoffman all coming towards the end of their round Kevin now back in the 11th and excellent rounds today from Ian polter and Justin Thomas and Richard Bland Stuart Manley in the worst of the weather this morning 68 Alex noron a 68 after missing the cut last week in Scotland ADI mat soyama the world number two of 68 James Han who got into the tournament couple of days ago after bran snica had to withdraw with a rib injury sander schaule who won at the Green Brier just last week to win his place in the open 69 for Jason day Ross Fisher said he hit it beautifully te green just found it so difficult to hold the puts maybe tomorrow will be Ross’s day fellow Englishman Andy Sullivan also an even par 70 188 yds from this 14th te elevated play a little downhill I don’t think the wind is doing a whole heap it’s hurting if anything pin in a friendly position for today 15 on Six from the left so no reason not to hit a good shot unless you miss Club quite badly it’s right over the flag but at least 30 yards too far the wind had dropped then for sort of 30 40 seconds it’s now back up again I think the same direction danger here is that mooy will overcompensate and just sort of come up on the front end Edge when a player of schwarz’s ability Mis clubs by that much it does tend to affect your own judgment looked a pretty decent swing too he seems to have settled into some sort of a Groove [Applause] it’s a real nothing happening day for Johnson he hasn’t hit many destructive shots but then he hasn’t hit many stunning ones either struggled to get the distance on a few shots and hasn’t hold a whole heap swing and game looks pretty much normal he won’t get much out of this course it’s a little short for his game he’s got a couple of far fives to come so certainly time for him to get something before the end of the day uhoh it’s been the popular bunker throughout the day while I’m sitting here with two South Africans should point out that Brandon Stone has battled back well horrible start for Brandon triple double in his first two holes even par for the rest of the round but remains at five over obviously yeah nice recovery from Deep bunker there for mcus and a chance to take the lead he if he can pop that one in quite far behind the ball where is it now hidden in the sand There She Goes quite incredible dep picts what a great coaching lesson as well just to show amate just how far behind you do hit the ball now Casey at 18 beautiful balance through the swing and that is a fine shot [Music] big cheers from the crowd as the players approach this green Schwarz will not an easy putt or chip from Over the back but it’s Johnson’s second shot there’ll be the interesting one really difficult stance in the bunker don’t know if he can get all his feet in I say all his feet he’s only got a couple that’s time I looked anyway only Jake the peg tribute act they have one more schw is going to be first to play Just slightly below the level of the green it’s a good 30 yard shot so the only help he’s got you down whatever window is is into him isn’t it so helps a little in the chip and loads of green to work with mhm so seen exactly how he balls line but shouldn’t no it’s lined perfectly so not a particularly difficult shot should be able to get this close he does trip the wall beautifully well well he got all his feet in yes can’t see from where I am you’re better equipped to answer that I bet it’s awkward yeah tough one [Applause] so Richie Ramsey Tri to get to three under with his put for a bird he had to par five downhill and just got out at the last second played very well was second in Ireland a couple of weeks back in the Irish open steady enough last week and has brought his game with him here but TI the last for 68 and’ll be a good opener playing with Matt coocher and Ryan Fox the informed New Zealander who’s three over I’m afraid Casey at the last but one or two players finishing spectacularly can Casey do likewise good long range p doesn’t have to leave the hole yeah slightly downhill had the feeling another part would have put him off with Ramsey just ducking right as it got to the hole and he just looked for a little too much it’s a shame that was a Pity that would have put him into the lead if he’d made that but never stops smiling does he Adam Scott for birdie at the last these huge Galleries and the massive stands around 18 I’ve certainly seen some terrific pots and chips around the final green here at Royal berdale but one stays out solid start though from Adam 69 one under par Micky F the unfortunately with this for par at the last Mark lean from just a little bit more than two yards off the green so it’ll be a slow c as to start off with swing drastically from left to right and he’s judged it to Perfection back the fch has picked him as the Australian most likely to do well here rcky fer HS out I think alliv us expected rcky to be a factor this week and he may well still be but an overpar opening round disappointing back nine for the American 66 for Paul Casey leaves him and a tie for fourth behind the three leaders and a very impressive start by Paul Casey who knows plenty about blink’s golf very successful amateur career lot of experience in the open he may well be a factor this week certainly got a good start come close a few times now let’s see him pop this one in didn’t give it a [Applause] chance he can take advantage of last two power FES and not drop any shots he still won’t be in too bad a shape right Southport Sands where the legendary steeple Chas of Red Rom used to be trained by Jinger McCain as trainer brog on to win three grand nationals it’s where he used to caner and Gallop along the Sands of Southport now this for paa Dustin Johnson and the world number one slips over par for his opening round there’s one thing about those southp CH the Titan goes so far out you’ve lost it the SE is gone tou for Lee Westward o on there but it must have got a little cooler with that it looks like a very warm top he’s got on Lee huge galleries in this opening day of the open there will be even bigger tomorrow I’m sure Friday traditionally the favorite day to visit the Open Championship fter among the early STS played in the worst of the weather came in with a 6 7 3 under so many talented young Englishmen in the open this year is one of them going to go on and do it I wonder oh that must have been hard for you to say not at all giv up in the Scots we’re a tennis Nation though cabri B played so well in Paris as wonderful final round in the top few already got it mixed up that was last one last week of course cabria Bay oh how’s this for a friendly bounce when the scottage open and find so the playoff Charlie Hoffman who started so spectacularly is finishing less impressively fourth shot at the power five 17th for Charlie [Music] Finly lost his first ball off the T California no know lives in Las Vegas was saying earlier if you just hit the wrong shot of the wrong time this course can bite to so quickly oh some seriously long decision making going on here or maybe get back for Charlie but let’s go ahead to CER at 18 look too bad a lie so shouldn’t be a problem for that cush it is stay there now there a little long coming down the wind remember it’s a 400 73 yd tle this is Hoffman’s ball flying through the air at the 17th and that is a stunner lost his t- shot so that’s his fourth so he still got a very very good chance to make a p here at the 17 truly fabulous we saw Westwood off the back of the greeny puted it to here so this for his PA and that’s sa very aw his hands right over now 41 so he remains even far after the lovely two at the 12th but it was really awkward but his hands the shadow right over the hole at he head two horrible little pot bunkers on the left but they finish at 260 so I think these boys might be able to carry those bunkers on the right start at 300 and they’ll be just within range maybe probably 15 yards of wind still sit that high it’s ballooning a little bit heading into the right rough clinging onto a decent line he might just be able to get there from that spot a Rory and Johnson can definitely get there in twoo I mean they’re a bit longer than schwarzel but he’s Mighty long it’s just a question of avoiding the bunkers up the right which if mroy absolutely rips one just might reach perfect yeah an absolutely glorious hit from maroy just carrying about knocking on 300 yards into a reasonable Breeze he given Johnson something to shoot after let’s see how much muscle he’s got in the bag pretty close contest between these two I suspect Johnson might have a five to 10 yd Edge but I could easily be wrong it’s flirting with the bunkers but won’t make them Cabrera Bella pleas bird get in get in just swung across the hole at the L [Applause] moment given now long chance for a two not to be so many different nationalities of players play here 156 players start off in the field 58 the most of them are from Europe 52 from America Two from Canada four from South America 11 from Australia 18 from Asia nine from Africa and two I don’t know where they’re from maybe Mars cuz I can only get to 154 then I gave up tronic count from a planet yet unknown there not a fabulous picture though looking down in the Great Links of Royal burdale a much more wooded links than than many though isn’t it there and they’ve taken out an awful lot of trees since since the last time just which provided a bit of a Windbreak a little more Exposed Of course now that’s a terrific lag P there from Richie Ramsey he should pop that in and be rounded in 68 would be a grand start nice shot back to the 18th green that’s wonderful Arena require a lot of skill to get this close to the hole beautiful P beautiful P to chop it’s a terrific round of golf if he’s able to just finish that one off and perhaps only behind Lee Westward as the best golfer who has yet to win a major championship yeah we can take Serio off that listener and I think we’re all delighted to do it Dale which is the bpn thwam club Lee Westwood the leader of that solid powerful don’t think they’ve got a club tie Club you don’t really want to be in isn’t it the tires aren made wide enough for those initials this for a par at the last for Matt cocher a round of 65 outstanding stuff from the American and he joins his fellow Countryman G Jordan spei and Brooks cap cup at the top of the leaderboard all Pars in the back nine but out in 29 five under you are three players now in the clubhouse with 65 against the name Paul Casey just one more polter Thomas Bland and Connelly 67 Charlie Hoffman in a little bit of trouble at 17 but only two back at the moment as is Kevin nah so it’s a little bit of an American dominated leaderboard at the moment long long way to go of course again those flags indicate the truly International nature of this great Championship Wales Sweden Japan America Korea South Africa Spain Belgium Austria Australia the club house on the left they’re sitting right in that edge of that window I can see it as if it was yesterday 1971 Simon hop day sitting there he qualified by winning the South African open and uh on the way from the practice te to the first T he stepped in a hold and broke his leg 238 to the front for Charles schwartzel 259 pin into the wind Li is not bad but it’s just the touch tight so he’s got to hit this really well and give it some well to get it there uhoh 253 for Johnson SCH finished I think near the ropes on the right CH will be able to get there no problem not quite sure what the problem is just length and directly into the wind H it slightly either side the ball splits away from the center of the green that does make it difficult only 240 for maroy just an iron it’s really almost getting going now so really hope he can knock it on here he can make side Mark lean to save herar at the 13th well done to the Aussie two top fives in the last three opens lost that playoff with Z Johnson and Lou Hazen in 2015 now R for a birdie at the final part three on the golf course the 14th go on go on beautifully hold 22 years old regarded as one of the best young players in the world Spain although went to college in America chip here Forin which he’s handled very nice he El it perfectly I think can say beautiful chip fabulous Hayden McCullen just 20 years old shot 64 in the second round of final qualifying over the fence at Hill Side that’s some round r that gol course is we look at the 12 well not as good as yesterday he made a hole in one here so the best that he’s going to do is double his score I love how you always take the positive view he W now when he’s poed the CL 34 said he was happy with his putting and he has what we’ve seen these two F he’s puted very nicely has the get to Wi a [Applause] major well he’s a bit off line here to be honest the ball finished under a buggy help the official move the buggy without affecting the ball she truly did a bit of guidance fortunately it wasn’t me cuz I’m a terrible Parker so I’d have probably run the ball over really got away rather lightly here so but schwarz’s going to play first although I think Johnson is further away both probably doing their thing AR and I have talked about ready golf maybe it’s coming in sooner than we thought tough for schwarzel to get it within 6 feet but relatively simple to get it within 30 he seems to be waiting for Johnson Johnson’s waiting for Christmas shortz is going to play it’s got to go over a mound but then in a sort of Gully be very lucky if it stays straight from that Gully finishes anywhere near it’s almost certain to bounce left and away from the pin certainly can’t cut it too near on the right because it’ll run off the green oh that so soft just St its heels in and said no I’m not having it so DJ off a decent lie plenty of green to work with they’re really not in bad shape just got to get it up the slope which he hasn’t [Applause] done give a off for his birdie at the 12th R3 be left to right swing good P this is f Nicholson down the hill into the 14th playing at 188 yards today H little long but good [Applause] shot lovely second from Rory mroy it’s been a while now since he hit a poor shot so I’m guessing he’s very very encouraged if he can find a good finish to this round he’s still in this he’s got a two put or better here up uphill it’s an opportunity left to right he’s hit some good puts too now brilliant try well done Rory he really has battled back well after that horrible start when he had five Bogies in the first six toes and didn’t seem to know where the ball was going but still three overp par but three holes to play one of them another par five so he’ll be feeling a whole lot better than he was a couple of hours ago if he get back one maybe two more shots he’ll actually go into the second round filled with confidence think I might be the shortest off the team midst the Sea of Marshals I can see about 48 from where I’m standing Dustin Johnson putting for birdie uphill it’s makeable he’s seen Rory’s but hasn’t learned enough do [Applause] oh great effort Char out scoring his playing Partners he’s two under Johnson one over M Ro three over three to play it’s been a super opening day hasn’t been we’ve had a little bit of everying this morning rain and wind and now days cleared up the wind has dropped a little this afternoon but it has been a fantastic first day in lots of good scoring head off to the 16 lers the great Arnold Palmer who came here in one in 1961 talk a bit more about Arnold in a moment but let’s go and see Charlie Hoffman struggling a bit at 16 and 17 it’s just gone 56 bogy [Applause] bogy this is for Nicholson now just a little long with the t-shot down the hill into the part three this through two oh on oh no no a little bit like the putt for a 62 at T last year just pouched on the edge I was going to say two open Champions have passed away since last year’s open at trun the great Arnold Palmer of course and Roberto De venzo also passed away the Argentinian the one in 67 along the coast at highlight you knew them both H you of course I did very much and uh they were both fantastic players and actually watched Arnold P that shot out of the Bush would was now 16 was then 15 I’d finished I’d played with Paul running one of the great Americans PJ champion in that event in 61 and when I ran out to watch on finish it the bush just blew away and it finished 50 ft or 20 ft behind the hole amazing I might have got it back in the Fairway with the sand on I was reasonably strong in those [Applause] day the great Peter de Briner the British writer and broadcaster said of that tournament it’s doubtful there was a man present at Brookdale who wanted pmer to lose it’s impossible to overpraise the tact and charm with which this American has conducted himself on his two visits to Britain he has no fancy ears or Graces he wears no fancy clothes he makes no fancy speeches he simply says and does exactly the right thing at the right time and that is enough fantastic words so true enry Longhurst about the late great Arnold Palama the wind has just freshened making this t-shot quite a bit harder it’s quite a Cool Wind now too maroy swipes it Marshall’s signaling straight so as expected it’s Mr Fairway you do love your Marshals well always always had a LoveHate relationship with Marshalls I hated them and they loved being [Laughter] Marshals is a one actually hurting them there from the right I’m standing in amongst them I don’t know you start the round with about four and by the time you get to 6 there’s 25 of them it’s uncanny they’re like um gremlins splashes them with water how is the wind actually here now now the wind yeah as they play this is it into the straight into absolutely straight into and really quite brisk I would say as brisk as it’s been all afternoon and um temperatures just dropped quite markedly in the last 15 minutes so this isn’t easy for for the players all of a sudden this that looked like a river from Charles Fel nicely on The Fairway and welcome in Tony Johnson thank you Hutch nice to be back nice to see shl drill a bullet down there and nice to see Rory on a little bit of a comeback traal Al looks a good one from Johnson I do love that Pro Tracer impossible not to love it there it just uh definitely adds something to to the production no question just Mr fa with then let’s have a look at this swing don’t we to think about the top of the Swing position here there’s the club face looks shut already going back and that left wrist bars backwards clove face looking straight at there as shut as you can get absolutely I mean the thing we were we were really told not to do as youngsters I know Mark James Mark James always tended to get a little bit of that but you know if you’re strong enough in the hands and arms and you can control the club and a lot of guys do it now h a lot of guys have that uh shut position at the top and and work it so well Charlie Hoffman final green birdie PT attempting to get to four under but disappointing end to his round dropping shots at 15 cend second shot into 16 and was actually on the green and rolled off the slope Into the Bunker and he couldn’t R they lost the ball of the 17th team so really just a p to finish off 564 nevertheless 67 hardly a poor start to this year’s Open championship um second shot the par five 15th with his power he’s been waiting all day for a par five but that get there is not going to quite get there I tell you what though it has got there it has got there that’s a super shot and sort of almost cut it up into the wind and still getting there I mean that is enormous power love watching this man play melson such a free flowing swing Wing can he find a fairway here at this big t five and it is Big cuz the window has changed that might their bunkers down there in the left that could catch him it was wider than you don’t want to get the rough in a long hole like this no absolutely not just negates your chance really of unless you get lucky get a great Li and get a bit of a flyer just takes the green out of play 13th Fairway Kevin n bunkered off the tea we told this is his fourth shot this is bit messy yeah it does reward good shots burel but if you make a mistake it really hurt you quickly so he’s struggling now to make B you’ll do well to double so often when you see these guys playing their fourth shot it means they got too ambitious with a first bunker shot caught the lip came backo down the hill into 14 wi in the Scottish open last week in a play with young Kum Shin oh interesting little chip nice description H bunker shot difficult behind the bunker oh [Applause] my good live for Rory 150 Ys for Rory mroy perfect line in the rough Absol absolutely could not be better almost like it was ran on perched on a TEEG pin front left so you don’t want to mess with it it look like a nice swing there he has messed with it I’m sure what happened there it didn’t look a bad swing I think just wrong Club just yeah yeah that was way out Johnson has five left left well 1 145 left five less than Mao Al way there got to be 20 yards of wind right now yeah are those just stalling just stalling into the breeze Jess yeah there’s bits of grass suddenly blowing around it’s the wind’s definitely freshened a lot in space of 20 minutes half an hour these players don’t seem to have noticed certainly Rory didn’t look Hope Char swatzel does they should have that cut is hooked up to a TV all the time just listening away theyd learn all sorts doubt if that’s against the rules is it I don’t think so they talking off regards it too so that might have been a little difficult for most to follow just 140 for schwarzel christas strike is he going to get it there yeah he sure he didn’t do the [Applause] same there’s a sudden keenness I can see I think in charl he just suddenly got happier on the golf course he hadn’t looked like he wanted to be there for a couple of years but he looks better now I agree entirely actually he looked utterly disinterested for a season or two enjoying it again Jan this man loves playing golf loves working the ball big hooks big cuts can’t actually see a straight shot he says that was pretty tasty right there wasn’t it as good a shot as I’ve seen them I done a few St in the that little three hole Ram now with that monstrous second shot to power five the SW Eagle big swing from the right quite sharply uphill there it wasn’t an easy pun looking slightly mystified but I won’t tempt fate but he seems unbelievably sound from sort of 3 to 5 ft he hits him firmly takes the break out and doesn’t miss too many check your little mini leader board going through look for your favorites well you could bunt it into the bank here skip it up and spin it but I think Rory is going to go the full aerial route it must be a really nice lie yeah pretty good this turf at burkdale is really is some of the best in the whole the UK I mean it it just gives the right amount to hit iron shots off and chip off beautiful Dustin’s practice swings would indicate he’s hitting it a little lower whether or not he’s pitching it up top difficult to tell well he’s done even better he didn’t used to rate himself around the greens but he’s worked so hard in the last three or four years and he’s developed a proper short game you don’t get to number one in the world without having that that was very confident played I love these shots that Andy gives us from the playing the cameraman the superb work and it gives you such a good idea what the golf course you think there are a few bunkers around this hole you could really play s castles well it’s a birdy chance for Shell but it’s lengthy it’s downhill downwind but there’s not a lot of borrow on it I’m thinking just outside right Edge should do it I think if Hawkeye were on this it would be a very very narrow Corridor go on that didn’t look quite enough there but again not a buch of good attack coming down one and everything a good solid par push well this is where the chip we were talking about for Rafa at 14 is he going to do a little Wall of Death here he’s got a back in his stance what a shot what a shot there was so much risk involved in that maded slightly comes out slightly dader right in the face of the bunker beautiful what a well played chip just fractionally under hit maoy this isn’t going to do much a firmly struck but straight should always go in nicely done he could have already with a bit of luck on the greens very delivered could haveed 12 13 and 14 I mean it really had chances and had the eagle opportunity of course at at the par five so he’s really played nicely since 11 k n a bogey P it’s going to be a double find one Fairway bunker and it can just bite you so quickly this is buba that beautiful shot down the hill into 14 this R too to get under par twice a master’s Champion there you go he was out playing golf with his buddies at forby down the road here earlier in the week just loves Lyn golf great to see that I believe it’s a fantastic horse too for me nicely done boldly popped in there by RAM and he goes undera back to back birdies two4 drinking oh little dis disappointing you can see it in the body language been grinding away to get that good score on the board and two shots gone but he still one under par I tell you what that’s still that’s still good work keep yourself in the red you’re okay with two par FS to come that’s all good I really enjoy watching K by that beautiful swing lovely Rhythm looks effortless and hits it miles so elegant isn’t it Hutch I mean it’s just it really is poetry in motion [Applause] this well that is spot on and just behind babba there who gives it a right old pop yeah I think you’ve had an awful lot of friends last week in Scotland up ahead at the [Music] greenon trying to bump and run it in there come off the shoulder oh just a little too much on that otherwise it could have got very close he’s got an awkward little one from there it’s dropping the club down quite sharply on the ball trying to get as little grassp between club and ball as possible and keep the ball the ball flight down and it was a good shot it was probably a yard or two too firm that’s all and Hut says it would have come down very close beautiful you look at the leader board there three players in at 65500 Kusa C and spe PA Casey there with a wonderful 66 some very good scores Rich L 67 good to see Manley in the worst of the weather early on today lovely round from Alex laen who won five events in just over a year nowo good number two in the world there two under par 68 so anybody underp parted today I think has done really well it’s in fantastic go of course in great shape 37 players under par at the moment he’s a wonderful Fielder isn’t it just actually it is really is the The Who’s Who of world golf nobody misses this unless they’re injured if they can get in it they will play a bit like austa boys want to be here olison level part a very talented player old Stager Paul Lorry two holes to go at even good work Chris Wood out early one over par adding the the nasty stuff this morning that was good work Justin Rose r one over and good to see another one of Young Players short Norris round in 71 of course there one in Japan and in the Far East yet to win at home a big event anyway on the main Sunshine tour Ricky farler 71 had to work hard but not bad and not he played so nicely last week in Scotland there at one over after 12 and Tom Layman still plays beautifully on the senior tour now Champion tour 72 good work Shane Lowry many expect him to do well rounded a couple over 79 have we got 65 and ties again this week is could really find out I think it is I think it is hat talking about making a halfway mark D forelli Rand and Sona got away to a shocker I believe triple double fought back to be just three over par off to 17 so they done very well young Brandon Stone there one whole to go three over par needs a bit of good work to John Daly was one on the Champions store this year of course one he’s open at St Andrews his PJ had crooked sick in America and it was soon after he’d been with us in South Africa we knew more about him than the Americans did and he could really send it out a long way little correction there Hutch uh is top 70 in the open I think might be more I think we both had that feeling there might be a slight difference but just a sign of our age isn’t it AB you do we were trying to find out earlier d and n I thought that I had a feeling it might be a little more a wang had a tough day 77s and 76 with Tommy Fleetwood much expected up but tremendous pressure and the stage and took a nice Triple bogy Eight at the par five 15 so that hurt his chances right back to full from the back of 15 the power five good effort [Applause] this Manan had a hole in one yesterday given off in practice down the hill 1888 playing a little differently now the wind sort of buing in from the right and hurting them a bit right over the top of the flags a good [Applause] shot Lee Westward finding another Fairway left stand the tower at 16 9 M an hour the wind into them directly into him now the temperature to 17° but cool the ho just right in the front Six Faces in four from the left and that is excellent good B Raa s or8 yards behind Bubba but very good clout off the tea my 42 y power five but into the wind andk he’s launched that pretty high I think sort of accepted that wasn’t going to really try and get cute somebody close to the flag there the hell bunkers on the right the only real problem off the 17th T about from that it’s keeping it straight his bungers are at 315 and he just hung on to without a fraction too much and it’s just in the longer rough on the left depend on the LIE he hit it a long way it’s probably gone um 360 or so and it didn’t run much cuz it’s in the rough it’s only about a foot in the the longer stuff it looks pretty wispy from here but i’ have on the other side of the Fairway I think he’ll definitely be able to reach how much he can control it there a different matter no he doesn’t like it Char it’s got away from down the right is i’ look the other side of the Court somehow the optical illusion but I tell you what he’s got a bit of run on that Hutch and he’s got a decent lie he’ll be very relieved when he gets there I think well Johnson appeared to like that one absolutely perfect yeah who wouldn’t like that one the classic RI that got the full treatment that one did and as Jesse said the temperature’s just dropped in the last 15 minutes or so sweat is going back on Li so cleanly off the top of the tea Dustin Johnson say’s a one terrific a heat I believe say can stand on a medicine ball in hit shots I mean how’s that for balance yeah they say could have been a pro at just about any sport he wanted oh no John Ram giving the hamstrings a bit of a rub there hope he doesn’t have a problem this is not going to help him right up the back of the bunker they’re trying to make a plan where to go must be an awful lie I wonder if he wasn’t down on his knees just an awkward stance yeah he’s definitely having a little rub there he’s got a tweak in that back back of that right thigh tiny the little bunkers there’s hardly room for you and the ball some of them I think Patrick Reed is going to go next we might just leave these guys and come back Burger birdie put at 17 well done two under par this is hard looking at he two at 14th behind the hole should come B from his right hold your line now hold it yes sir oh that’s doubl and 13 comes back with the two in the next hole well done lovely after half is 31 so what is the plan lot of discussion he’s still not utterly convinced about what he’s going to do oh my no look where that ball is it’s really cool two charges slim and none you couldn’t do anything else tell you you’re one of the best bun of flers that never played the game yeah very kind of you hatch but if he couldn’t do it he was giving a clinic the other day I was watching a b of stuff on on Sky TV and he was hitting three irons out of a deept bunker and he was carrying a three yards out the bunker and getting it close to a flag that was about four yards on the green so talented Cabrera boo a department that he has improved on dramatically in the last couple of years he used to be three or four years ago he was actually quite iffy with the wedges if he had had that shot there you would have thought this could be a bit fat could be a bit skinny not anymore beautiful shot I can now find this 15 Fairway but right now bunker there okay it’s all right yeah I missed the Fairway Hutch but I like that flight that’s a a good indicator isn’t it of how to play in the wind always loved in the old days di remember the little FY wels when was second in the Open Championship once and real long hitters who want getting ready to play Dave Thomas who was one of the longest hitters in the world and Harry wheatman could give it right down when they used to sailor by him into the wind he shaped the ball so well he used to out dve them they used to get a little Disturbed how much Hearts all now something special into 1 par five wind off the right trying to cut it back into the wind and wow the sort of brakes you need so true isn’t it hat you know some weeks you can play the best golf in the field and the breaks are against you you don’t win other weeks you know you don’t play quite as well you get the brakes and you go home with a trophy 1 193 for Johnson probably little as a eight iron for him leaning as though it’s gone right there’s a trap there oo well it probably a fair result neither trap nor green and a tricky little putt over a ridge down to the hole maoy just won L his Li is absolutely fine don’t think it’ll fly much unless he gets a bit steep on it or something tough to get it near the pin but not too difficult to hit the green done well another Eagle chance he had a chance at Christini couldn’t quite take very nearly and he’s what we’ve seen now since know the 11th H we saw made the birdy he played quite beautifully just got it absolutely perfectly didn’t he seeing the flecks in that shaft I mean just shows how strong he is I mean the head stops the shaft keeps going it’s amazing P pack now for John Ram would be a heck of a part because he had no chance in the bunker [Music] Petty I was reading that once upon a time he had a really violent temper he could really get very cross in training at University in America when he was I think in Arizona somewhere as we watched Daniel Burger into the last oh as that for a friendly kick Rafa straight and firm conness very good up and down for the Spaniard he’s got the complete game now RAF I’m so glad he got across the line last week I felt sorry for Callum shinin but RAF has got close a few times and managed to blow it that’ll get his confidence back on track continue to play well here B goes for one over par five back to even for the round he got a par five to come but really for 22 years old as believe will be mature golfer saying but he’s got over he’s got a demolition expert that does a bit of Mind work with him my I can’t remember the guy’s name demolition expert yeah that’s what he’s retired now now he’s gone into it’s a good thing to retire from being also having heard of what his temper was like I think it sounds like he could do a bit of demolition so he still got the right man there apparently they’ve done very well but back to Jesse just a little bit of left to right on this but danger is running it 4T past and then the second part would be badly affected by the slope past the pin would make it very awkward so if I if I were doing this I’d try and get it up just short or in it’s a brilliant Tripper isn’t he a fantastic Tripper tell me a hold that one so good to see sh as I really good he looks like he’s enjoying himself in the GOL course again which is you’ve got to yeah a couple of years ago I mean two 3 years ago he looked like he was hating every second of it and I I believe he actually said he just wasn’t enjoying being out there and when and you you don’t give the best of yourself if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing he is now in a great place mentally I think and it’s great for us to see we know him so well we’ve known him since he was a baby absolutely there we are getting along very nicely 18th hold again well that certainly was a great chip from sh not that easy it’s quite tight in the Gully where he was I just expected him to put it but didn’t hesitate Dustin Johnson not much green to work with it’s going to go a little left to right to start with and then it’s going to come fairly sharply from his right and it’ll be downhill that last sort of 12 10 12 ft really not hble it’s the sort you just dribble down and hope it just stops somewhere near the hole make a for get out of Dodge onto the 18th te happy as Larry got a very good view of it change S but still in excellent if you look at this say Well done we going have a look at hawkey and see what maoy has left for his Eagle three what a way a horrible started maoy it was five over five to six HS and he’s ready out of fight hard since got back a couple where’s our HW guy there you can see the Blue Line depending on a slightly slow PA take borrow a little more you’d have to hit on the red line very firmly to make it I wouldn’t think you’d want to go about it that way but now we know watch it break from the left give it a chance oh he knew he hadn’t hit it perfect line too so another birdie bird 11 both to par five so and he’s looked so much better over this little stretch after a horrible horrible start yeah looks like his twin brother took over at the at the 10th great bounce back it’s what we expect of a wonderful young play and such a talented young man he just hasn’t been able to hold a but really I mean he’s played beautifully and Dustin Johnson now from way up above there we go pop this one in for his birdie back to even path and the round uhoh yeah just took a bit of a flip at that one somehow [Applause] disappointed I think he expected to turn quite sharply which it didn’t do and I think that the slope behind that he put down influen the line he looked at there half the ball below the hole full another man C be up short that’s 16 when has picked up a couple of players misjudging the second going with the old Texas wedge the putter from off the green [Applause] fluidity still there in the stroke on the longer puts Burger Shadows getting longer now for birdie unlucky well good solid round for the American 6 68 no I’m done there Kevin now [Music] go need a picture to touch more would kick left got a big swinging put there now for a birdie players waiting on the 18th T Mayu I think it is just uh playing up the group in front Kevin Chapel just hit the most diabolical shot from the middle of the Fairway quite incredible straight left this seems to put the Willies up the players sometimes this finishing hole can understand it into the wind but not today bunkers all around this 18th the one that will concern the most it’s about 300 Ys off the tea on the left hand side plays in front all came up just short of that which means that meloy and Johnson have have plenty of artillery even with a three-wood to reach that bunker so they’re going to have to they’re going to have to be quite careful here sh the wind is picked up to 50 mph he’s lost it right oh good boy back at the Fairway nice bounds pitched in the rof which just softened it a bit I have pitched on the faway it would have been within 8 10 yards of the bunker so Johnson has to just not get too careless Schwarz probably all right with the three wood we just across enough probably to he’s taking no chances he’s got a got an iron and he can really move them out that that looks perfect scamer along a little perfect that must have been about a 99 that that bunker is it’s only 240 to reach it he’s got about 230 to the front of the green that must be a different bunker I think I’m getting easily confused there a loot of them to to confuse you this way place it I’ve been out here a lot of hours said Jess you’re doing a great job boy Al looks a little right but can it get back in the Fairway bounce out of the rough come on nearly not too bad take that he knows he’s got a tough angle into that back right flag into the wind again to 16 for career Bay holding a very awward spot right in the front of the green and he’s played an absolutely masterful shot brilliant mark leichman for a par at 16 didn’t really threaten just a little firm knocked it through the break it did yeah they swing quite a lot from the right on the slower p birdie Pat now right to left and looks to be on a good line oh man just a little double breaker went the other way at the whole bit firmer might have held it online good TR though Bubba in a little trouble here tall very strong take that well done also got a bir johnon bub rot going along very very [Music] nicely P Champion poor Lori good days work at one under this far a par though come on chippy oh no [Applause] this a boy to finished but all 70 hardly a bad round he’s got a sun caring for him and it’s nice to work back D Don thank you H young Michael Lorry who’ll be carrying for his dad until he goes off to Sterling University in September disappointing finish for Paul but still an even par 70 by no means a bad score only five back three players sharing the lead at the open Paul Casey whose 40th birthday falls tomorrow in second place just one back Rafa Cabrera beo last week’s winner at the Scotty schopen the man he beat in the playoff by the way Callum shenin had a 74 today four over a little further down Kevin n still on the golf course in the group at two underpar anything on dep par today has been pretty good not been an easy day it never is at Royal burkdale with the the wind blowing and especially early this morning some heavy rain as well very unpleasant Jason day and Adam Scott the two Aussies both up there there Paul Lori in the group at even power 7 John RAM and Mark lishman will be hoping to pick up a birdie or two in the way in as will Lee how Tong the very promising young Chinese player Danny Willet showing some Farm it’s been a pretty miserable time for him recently but a 71 today is not bad Justin Rose a 71 Ricky Fowler also a 71 71 that young Amer too that just one plant or Alfie plant Alfie plant yeah well I’ve sorted out the bunkers on this 18th I know exactly which one is which to a certain degree anyway Schwarz has 209 to the pin pin 24 on seven from the right it runs away from it to the right runs away off the back and there’s a little slope before it’s not the easiest shot in the world a reasonably long yardage even for him this has got to be a I would think a pretty decent six time oh what a bounce that [Music] took well that was the sort of Bounce you get and then suddenly you wake up and and you’ve won the open yeah oh no even most of us don’t even dream that you finished 14th in the local pram Johnson’s got 167 so very realistic yardage at getting it close should be able to pitch it at the bottom of that slope and just let it pop up but both him and Rory and Schwarz they have a habit of trying to fly all the way right to the pin stopping it on a Sixpence that’s what he’s trying to do again and probably would have managed it the Rory with just 147 this will be one of his probably four wedges have so many wedges now cuz they hit the wall so far the time you get to the most lofted it’s nearly going up your left nostril so it is just a controlled wedge come on one more Rory get up there and spin yeah he’s giving himself the chance and really he has hold nothing doy in this line he’s played superbly for what we’ve seen we’ve seen a lot of him from the 11th it’s been a superb exhibition and if he could have held a couple of puts it would have been very special the trouble for am well we thought it was trouble very powerful this could come all the way around and get close how unbelievable Ah that’s Mark James dream again isn’t it really is talk about a Wall of Death fantastic shot he is cable look how strong he is and look at that head down swinging past the head of the old classic really fantastic and this is the reception up the 18th for Rory meloy we really did fear for him early on I know that sounds like a ridiculous thing to say about the former world number one but his game looked to be all over the place after half a dozen holes five Bogies in the first six holes but then the real Rod Mao turned up steadied and he’s three under par of the whole sense and if he can just make birie here my goodness he turned around and signed for a 71 quite very unlikely after half a dozen hes R after a beautiful second to the 16th as this little but from the little Li and in she goes she really is playing quite beautifully he had to wait five years for his win in Scotland last week they might only have to wait a week for the next one look at those stands and of people still out there watching the golf office I don’t see an awful lot on any of these buts Johnson first was a was a a ho hum sort of 99 wedge even I think this is pretty straight most of the way I just Edge left in the last 6 fet but I just don’t see a lot on it it’s really about Pace it’s the long enough P but you just get the pace right if it goes in youve had a mega bonus simple as that is this taking more time on this than he’s taking on virtually any shot in the round which considering it’s Welling to beer a clock is ridiculous he’s got the green book out on his book of notes I’m not sure which given him maybe a bit of inspiration unless of course it said just lag it up I can’t read the screen I’ve seen one or two dramatic finishes to rounds in this 18 green already today we’re going to get a couple more with this group [Applause] boy strange sort of day for the world number one he birded the second hall and then never had another eventually a 71 one over par for Dustin Johnson well if he holds this and it should move a little right to left it would be a brilliant effort he had a real wobble at the start could have gone for 85 but he’s knuckled down and done really really well so we’re all willing this in come on go on oh brilliant we s with went to the 10th T the thought in his mind would be to try and sneak three or four birdies this back nine and I’ll tell you what he’s gone out and he’s done it what fighting spirit that is absolutely brilliant from matoy he can be as proud of that round as just about any other he’s played for a long time five over for the front front nine four under for the back and Rory maroy is back in the Open Championship could really provve to be an inspiration for for him and it could have been a few better too because you know really did play wonderfully well from the 11th onwards after a great pounce for charl swatzel this for a round of 66 play well done well done char pass Masters champion great opening round comfortably out scoring his two playing Partners schwarzel 66 Michael Roy and Johnson 71s and Charles watzel only one off the lead well the thousands of Spectators who followed this three ball have certainly had their money’s worth thanks very much thank Youk of course they’ll be out earlier tomorrow morning here’s the reaction as that birdie put dropped for Rory and look at that there you go that’s the real Rory Michael right I’m back and all credit to him because we’re not exaggerating he really did look to be in all sorts of of trouble after six hoes today we’re hearing that John Ram has called a two- shot penalty on himself but illegally moving an impediment we’ll get some more details for you but that’s a very strange situation that’s going to go down as a 72 overpower any ideas s well I’m seeing some footprints in the right hand bunker maybe he thought something you know was an artificial object and lift it out out and found it was a stone I me I can’t I don’t know we wait and hear more details that’s very strange a seven for John Ram as Kevin that good shot now that is strange do I I just popped out for a minute and uh hatches just said that Ram wasn’t in the bunker played around the bunker so it must have been prior to that that’s very strange one the stones and bunkers are movable obstructions and in in the open you can move stones and bunkers that’s what uh we heard at the har rules committee on wed they didn’t but he wasn’t in the bunker as such he says so I’m he’s an honest man you know when he was 16 he finished second in the European amateur championship got back to his room and realized he actually had 15 clubs in the bag I think there was a club hiding under one of the head covers and reported it to his coach and took a disqualification and of course he was involved in that slightly controversial incident in Ireland wasn’t he with marking the ball in the green in which under the new rules it was assessed as a reasonable attempt and no penalty so he’s clearly very sensitive about it and has called a two- shot penalty himself so John Ram has suddenly one over par wow but of a mind Bender we’ll find out more in a while Raa he’s four under with a PA five to come confidence is just Sky High go go that didn’t look pretty yeah that’s borrowed its way in a little bit hasn’t it Colin Bur in the back many Cades around with more experience than Colin C for a lot of top players retif gon for a long time when retif was winning majors and a very fine writer too I’m not sure if he still does his newspaper column but it was always a very interesting read Scotty hen ler to one which he does on every te even the par three 315 yards from the oie setting up very open I’m going to give this the smash power cut running down there like a scolded cat that’s gone miles unique you’d have to say Bubba Watson is back of the field unfortunately after an 81 today was the man who hit the first t-shot of the open this morning marera L you stays in the 78 luck for that Bry and Des Shambo who qualified last weekend in the PGA Tour 76 Amo Grio 76 Tommy Fleetwood 76 turle hner 75 Zack Johnson 2015 Champion also a 75 Franchesco molinari’s two holes to go he’s four overpower so lot of players that you fancied might have something to say about this open have got off to a poor start John deia 74 good try by Nicholson Phil could have done with doing what Rory did and make a few birdies in the back nine couldn’t he but he’s not birdied either of the far fives remains at three [Applause] over this is what faces you for your second shot on the final hole massive Grand stands on either [Applause] side we’re not actually showing a caption with John score on it because there is some doubt as to what actually happened at 17 we won’t know until he’s obviously hauled out and G in and either signed his card or spoken to officials we’ll get an explanation for you but meanwhile Le Westward strength as well as technique required for that one it’s a beautiful shot out of that thick rough to get it on the Green from there just looked not very much space between those two bunkers well done Lee Westwood [Applause] so it’s a bogey for now back to one under hold still on the path please hold still it looks like he’s got a pretty good live here oh wow to come out of that R and judge the distance so well is quite incredible not a birdie on the card for Patrick Reed three Bogies three over leash birdie put at 17 to get into red figers well done he has really pattered well he’s hold a lot of that that sort of length F today it was Anton’s Tony and Nick price is President’s Cup team last time around and I’m sure he will be later this summer as well Tony yeah I’m pretty sure he will be and he’s a he’s always a welcome addition great competitor there’s how it looks three players sharing the lead in the open at five under Power polter Justin Thomas Richard Bland All Out Among the earlier starters they’ve been highing that leaderboard for a long time they might have felt they’ been overtaken by a few more players than they have have but although the weather’s been better this afternoon it’s still not been easy obviously in very thick grass not able to have a go at the green but he’s played the percentage shot and he’s done very well do H your ball into the rough you want to make sure that the first thing you do is get it back out onto the Fairway so you don’t double your problems Shadows lengthening at uh about 20 to 8 in the evening here in the northwest of England play will go on for some little time yet what one two three four five six seven groups still to finish after this one this is a p of a good 45 ft just knock it up close to put he’ll be very pleased with the 71 [Applause] Baba perfect Drive always hard to predict what shot he’s going to hit what shape he’s going to hit but he’s got that one wrong got the clubing completely wrong John Ram not entirely sure what his overall score is because of the confusion about about 17 but we will find out very shortly meantime it would help if he holds this it’s a good put though not in but it’s a very good putt really has a lovely picture from that 18th T isn’t it I on the sensible shot the safe shot downwind for Mark lman perfect t-shot so this for a par four for John Ram we suspect it may be for a 71 total but that’s not confirmed now Patrick Reed for his birdie for a 72 biry free round that is amazing isn’t it player like that aggressive player you think he’d have two or three birdies or more every single time he played played a game well on Lee Westwood it’s a 711 overpar had to wait until the 10 for his first bird he added another at the 12th after dropping one at 11 but in the end he’s not that far behind one over pars only six off the lead at the the moment saw him in the thick rough this is his third shot now to the par five and that is a beauty very elegant player isn’t he he really is fluid rhythmical action strong as an ox and is sapple as a willow disappointing day for Phil Michelson and Franchesco Molinari they’re both three overp par poy is here a long way back it’s going to be 190 more than 190 yards and he’s played a terrific shot right for Bubba get down get down full melson probably at more than that 187 for leean it’s quite a narrow entrance into this into the screen that bunker on the right is fairly close to the way the doesn’t bother him though fabulous second shot man and form top five in the quick and Loans International in the PGA to last time out he won the Arnold pmer Invitational at Bay Hill earlier this year of course the first time first time it has played after On’s passing exactly was a little unlucky they have a fabulous tribute to Arnold Palmer in the uh tented Village which is definitely worth worth seeing Cabrera Bell just underneath it didn’t quite give it enough on that line far five though keeps him at four under par tied for fourth Sam and I met him earlier in the week congratulated him again last Sunday and we’re laughing about the number of ranking points race to the buy points and I don’t you want some money as well what was it 900,000 he said no 89841 and 11 P actually he’s actually very funny rapper huge grin in his face as you would have sh BBA now his birdie P he going to start just on the left of the hole beautifully hold and in the end was a good two put those birdies five in total three Drop shots second in the BMW PGA Championship the first event in the RX series at Wentworth in May that’s his best finish of the Season he said four top 10 in the PGA to though pretty good year for Frankie inside the top 20 in the world not a great day today got off to a bad start in fact he was five over after seven ho so he’s done quite well to get a couple back is it just the sort of patch you don’t want to leave yourself on the last screen isn’t it [Laughter] absolutely especially with 10,000 people watching unbelievable crowds out here today as you would have expected they’re expecting a new alltime record this week for the crowds even eclipsing the crowds at St Andrews not very for full [Applause] Mickelson not too often nichelson has a Birdy free day he has rounds where he makes a lot of birdies and drops a lot of shots because he’s so aggressive but so unusual not to have a single red number on the card this for 68 and would have a very good idea of what this putter is going to do after watching Phil Mickelson it says because I mentioned how many of those putts he’d hold today on the last hole it’s definitely your fault but he can’t he can’t walk off and complain about his pting today that’s for sure he’s ped really well and you can’t hold them all they all know that final t-shot of the day for Bubba Watson it’s pretty straight for Bubba in terms of flight path well then Mark lean round in 69 one under far at the moment only four off the lead now who would have believe that not a birdie in the card for Phil Mickelson not a birdie in the card for Patrick Reed both round and three over lots of booties for this man six today two Drop shots little wants to move a yard wonder if that’s reached sit down stay wow that ran a long way coming off the fair way only Now The Spectator stands beginning to empty as we head towards 8:00 in the evening local time 146th Open Championship three players on 5 under par 65 are Jordan SPI Brooks kka and Matt cucher Paul Casey and Char schwartzel and Rafa Cabrera beo who’s playing 18 all on four Under World number two Hadi Matsuyama round in 68 same score as Alex noren prolific winner over the last 12 months as Bubba Watson coming towards the end of a first R defending Champion enrik Stenson a 69 today well as we saw that uh Second of Kevin Naz at 17 run a long long way to the back of the green and hawkey is giving us the the path depending on the pace he puts on the pot it’s a long way over the ridge it’s obviously going to come left or right just how much it comes left or right depends on how hard he hits it 54.8 8 ft one and a half or 1.2 ft downhill and breaking 3.2 ft to the right roughly yeah I think the differential between those two lines is partly down to the fact that there’s a little shoulder coming in off the bunker on the left and almost the further left you go the more it’s going to turn so a couple of distinct ways to approach this P I think he’ll take the bigger break and try and dye it down the hill and he has gone a long way left pretty good effort buba just in the edge of the rough there comes down very steeply on the ball so doesn’t often have to worry about getting a flyer [Applause] this is Kyle Stanley of the US who’s on even par going along very nicely Kyle got a tidy card until an unfortunate double bogey at 14 [Applause] and that’s suspected Raa did find that left hand bunker off the te ran a couple of yards too far and he’s just knocked it out to here so this is third shot that well played chance to save his part Phil michelson’s R by the way we saying he didn’t have a birdie it’s the first time he’s played a around in the open without a birdie since 1999 l w it I’m actually quite surprised you said that because I would have thought you’d be saying it’s the first time he’s ever played around a golf in the open without a birdie two PA now for Kevin n don’t forget you can keep up with everything that’s happening here at Royal berdale on theopen.com including some live TV pictures as well fing featured groups and the three hole Channel all the information about all the players the open.com thoroughly recommended Scott H he’s one over for the day also couldn’t find the green two third shot settle down settle down pretty good you know when you see somebody on that side of the final green you think got to think of sevie bisos incredible shot that he played in 1976 the last hole in Johnny Miller one ran it between the two bunkers brilliant haven’t seen an updated weather forecast for a while I have to say but they were saying that the chances are tomorrow could be the worst of the the four days for the weather they’re expecting to be pretty heavy rain for much Friday thought they been wrong before let see if Bubba can finish with a magical long putt go on go on oh all it needed was a couple more rolls he’ll be pretty happy with a 68 anyone would be three drops on the card but also five birdies for Bubba Watson the two-time Masters champion and it’s good to see him playing well again he hasn’t had a very good year so far in 2017 for a PA for OD yeah unfortunate way to finish for Rafa third bogy on the card still a 67 three under inside the top six that is excellent form of D Donald a week ago and the Scottish open continues just looking down at the players still on the course there’s no one going to threaten the lead at five under par so it looks as if they will have three players top of the leaderboard after the opening 18 holes Gordon SPI Brooks kka and Matt ccher the US Trio and a nice four for Scott H and he’s rounding [Applause] 71 oh coming towards the end of our transmission today fellas silly question but have we enjoyed it could just a bit who could not enjoy this great test on a great course with a great field oh yes D and the weather got better and better as the day went on so that added to it but we saw some incredible golf we really did was top three players 65 there is some golf on this golf course Casey 40 tomorrow so an early birthday present for him a round of 66 for four under Charles schwarzel alongside him polter Thomas Bland connley the young Canadian and Charlie Hoffman all round in 673 under that’s the the top 10 Rafa Cabrera b as we saw finishing 67 Stuart Manley of Wales finished 33 for a 68 and pretty tough weather this morning James Han who was first Reserve until just a couple of days ago when BR Nea had to pull out James Han took his spot and has capitalized an Al is had a good day BBA Watson’s had a good day Matt Fitzpatrick a 69 fellow Europeans Thomas Peters and Henrik Stenson alongside him beef Johnston B vurger only 35 players out of 156 finishing under par Jason day Adam Scott Mark Lehman the three Aussies together Ross Fisher Andy Sullivan Paul Lorie and torb olis all round in 70 as was Kevin kizner Danny Willet finding some form and what’s been a disappointing year one over 71 Alex levie missed two tiny putts at the last to turn a 69 into a 71 well done Alfie plant the Amer 71 Justin Rose also on 71 Ricky Fowler 71 and Rory michaelroy how about that stunning round to goal from uh Rory from eight onwards he was five overp power after six holes and he finishes just one over coming back in 32 so one of two fancied players didn’t have such a good day clearly among them L Hazen Podrick Harington the win of the last time the open was here and Sergio Garcia 73 by no means out of it 65 leads so 73 or eight behind after one round there’s still plenty of time to try and make it up but they will have to go low tomorrow and that of course will depend entirely on the weather conditions and we hear that they may not be too conducive to low scores but there we are the clock on the famous old white top Deco Clubhouse shows the clock ticking around to just about 10 8 in the evening it’s been a wonderful day here at the open how was it ever anything else from us all bye-bye for now [Music] e yeah there’s there’s a little bit room behind it just kind of runs away there said 35 land 40 with the back down low 30s okay [Applause] 5:00 down [Applause] seven off the right little La correct J man [Applause] for for for [Applause] the go w for [Applause] I you stoping to give me a lift my heart just sunk can I take your kit off here and
