Rory McIlroy shoots 4-under 67 | Round 1 | Wells Fargo Championship | 2024

In the opening round of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, Rory McIlroy carded a 4-under 67 to sit three shots off the lead.

The PGA TOUR heads to Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club – site of the 2017 PGA Championship and 2022 Presidents Cup. This is the sixth signature event of the season, which features an elite field of 69 players. Rory McIlroy returns this week to a place where he’s had plenty of success. He’s claimed three victories here (2010, 2015 and 2021), as well as five top-10s. He enters this week with momentum after winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry two weeks ago. Wyndham Clark will also tee it up as he looks to become the first player to win back-to-back here. This was Clark’s first win on TOUR, and he has claimed two more titles since that victory – including the U.S. Open. Xander Schauffele will also be in Charlotte this week as he hopes to secure his first win. He finished second here in 2023 and claimed T25 or better in 10 of 11 events this season. Others to look out for are Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood.

just makes a different sound when it comes off down the left hand side cutting back this thing is perfect first of 25 PGA Tour victories for Rory mooy right here back in 2010 just a little 3/4 nine iron from 158 this is at it but it looks like it’s going to land up top all right in the perfect spot is that any good nearly in pitches it right into that UPS slope see the ball Mark has looked really solid in this opening round so far early the driver is an absolute weapon and seems to have the three4 offsp speed shot dialed in as well just takes different lines off the T and most in the field Play Slightly downhill good looking strike started out well right winds bringing it back it’s plenty of Club it was on a good line as well Sky High nineiron even though it was back into that wind but he’s able to stop it no problem confident stroke really well done back to back for Roy that starts off very high down the center drawing towards that left bunker may need to sit down it’s going to stop in a hurry and that’s gone back into the bunker the LI is okay really solid strike it’s headed a little right of the hole but drawing back looks like it’s got plenty of distance oh too much looks fine there though you could put it from there if you choose to [Music] oh how about just make it keep the roll going with the final roll on the putt three time champ at a place gets that rooll look at the [Applause] line lovely recoil watching it a little bit anxiously down the left hand side nothing anxious about that no need to and that takes off just right of the flag drawing back towards it this could be really good if it gets up on top of that shelf 553 yd hole driver six doesn’t quite get the ridge yes I out of the left I remember when this hole used to be a power five it still is that’s right he’s giving it a wrap all right Frank he’s putting right now like he expects all of these to go in you see the left hand move it’s like a little more left hand through but this is as Johnson said he just nails that that is moving five under through seven from outside 50 ft he’s holding his pose for a long time staring anxiously down the left side oh wow yeah I’m not sure why I think he was just ad iring it Kurt I think he was too really wet Splash as he makes contact this is drawing towards the left side of the green needs to hang on and all three players in that group are going to have to play their third shot from the bunker that’s coming out a little soft needs to Chase he is not going to be happy with that he hit a beauty in New Orleans playing with Shane Lowry there late in the day there just didn’t quite catch that one the way he was looking just moving ever so slightly to his left split right Edge butt and keep your pace up he get a bunch of good looking putts today looks really [Applause] comfortable that has a six iron on the way on a really nice line at the middle of the green cutting back at it this could be K oh it sure is easily one of the best of the day from that new te area they’ve made uh they’ve built these new T’s they’ve adjusted at a little different angle from over there it’s fast putting straight down the hill feel like he’s had a lot of these putts today downhill where he just could not be as aggressive as he wanted yeah walks it in mroy to five under par and a shot [Applause] [Music] back uh well he gave it a big crack and it is headed down that right hand side we may get our answer here we’ll see maybe right of it though straight over it yeah okay there’s your answer yes he still can he covered it yes he did Sir oh boy new T it’s going to be 550 next year guys yeah but the good news is Johnson you can’t get to the bunker anyways solid strike leaking a little bit right wind trying to bring it back towards that hole Terry 528 yds Drive the nine on don’t look at [Applause] me and in the end he found the line so add another birdie to the total here at 16 for M Roy 11 throughout his career more than anybody else bounce back getting your first win here and then obviously you know don’t even have to explain your your success here at all time but what does it mean to you to come back to Quail Hollow every single year yeah it um it means a lot so you know I got to know the Harris family very well from um even before I played this golf tournament Johnny Harris was uh the first person to host me at Augusta before my first Masters in 2009 so um I’ve always had a great affinity for this place and then obviously coming here winning my first uh PJ Tour event um and then yeah just you know plan in front of these fans I feel like you know Charlotte has sort of taken me in as one of their own and uh it’s been it’s been a great journey I’ve celebrated I think like 13 on my last 15 birthdays here as well because we obviously when the tournament Falls so um yeah it’s been a great place for me and some awesome memories and obviously trying to keep making making more of those Ry you’ve been one who’s played weeks before Majors many times and it seems to to to fit and work for you yeah but what do you what do you think about having the Signature Events the week before this is a change for this tournament yeah I mean I I would say I um my favorite two weeks of the Year previously was uh akan and the PGA you know you had a world golf championship leading right into a major championship and um I love those two weeks you know there were two big events you could go to akan um see where your game is but still get some competitive reps and if you get yourself in the mix that’s a awesome way to prepare for next week to see where your game Stacks up against uh under pressure and against the the guys you’re you know possibly going to be playing against the next week as well so um I’ve always liked these sort of two you know big events back to back you know a world golf championship or a s signature event going into a meor I think it’s a to for me anyway it’s a nice Cadence thanks for
