Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!

I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.

I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!

On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

all right guys welcome back to the hit Channel today I’m going to do a gapping session I have got a lot of brand new golf clubs in my bag new irons new 3-wood fairly new driver I’ll be honest with you I don’t really know how far these clubs are going so I thought it’d be quite a good time to do a gapping session something I would recommend every single one of you watching do and you can do it in loads of different ways I’m lucky enough obviously to have a launch monitor I forsight GC quad which in my opinion is the best launch monitor giv really good Clos data either go and see someone who’s got a launch monitor PJ golf coach a fitter where you can hire the facility go to a top Tracer driving range again I’m I’m a huge Ambassador for top Tracer I think the technolog is brilliant so again go to the top Trac driving range work out your distances or even go on a quiet empty field hit shots and even Pace it out if you have to but know your distance is in today’s video I’m going to start off with from a lob wedge and work all the way up through my set all the way through to a driver show you the results at the end of this video you compare your numbers to me potentially but I need to know my distances to help me play better golf my setup currently I’ve got a 60° lob wedge which is a Tade mg4 a 56° Tade mg4 a 50° Tade mg4 then I’ve got the brand new and you you probably seen the review on this channel of the brand new Wilson Staff model CB irons I’ve got this from three iron down to pitching wedge I popped this three-wood in recently as you again you saw on this channel the Ping Max g430 and I’ve got the Cobra dark speed LS driver in the bag so let’s go through them all I ideally certainly my irons want kind of that 10 maximum 15 yards gap between every Club 12 to 13 yard gap between every club would be perfect let’s go on my LOB wge first build it up and then uh like I say hopefully we don’t see any big gaps in the setup and if we do we always need to find some recommendations to fix all those big you know if we start seeing 20 yard gaps between irons there’s something wrong there we need to fix that I’m going to handful of shots with each Club make sure I feel like I’ve got a good sample set and then move on to the next okay L wedge first just going to hit full shots I think another time I might do a proper wedge chart against something I’m desperately in need of but this is just going to be full shots with every single golf club today now what’s important in the gapping session you’re not looking for the longest you can hit a golf shot there’s no point in that we’re looking for the average so if I hit one stupidly long or if I Duff one a bit short take those out that’s not a true reflection on how far you hit it on average you want a good collection of nice golf shots so that you can trust those distances out of the golf course really important that what I also think it’s important if you can use the golf ball that you actually play with I play with a Prov V1 I’m doing all my gapping with a prov1 and also I’m not only just doing a gapping today because I’ve got new clubs I’ve been looking at increasing my swing speed hitting the ball a little bit further and I don’t really know how far I hit the golf ball at the moment so even if you’ve made a swing change you might have increased your speed you might have decreased your speed it’s worth doing a gaping session maybe maybe twice a year just so you’re fully confident on how far you hitting every Club in your bag so that’s why uh we take out any uh miscellaneous golf shots that is a a proper shank a proper proper shank that one will that one will come out of the numbers I don’t need to know how far I H my shanks [Music] [Music] okay we’re all the way up to six iron now pretty much halfway through the set um some interesting results so far actually very interesting I think it’s going to really help me this gapping test um maybe not what I expected to see [Music] today I’ve got three clubs left to go three iron 3-wood driver three iron first [Music] first okay so brand new ping g433 wood which is a new addition to the bag [Music] okay results are an interesting reading as well so that was just under 100 shots I’ve hit all the clubs in my bag to get a really good sample size for this comparison gapping test uh we look here through the numbers the big thing I’m looking for is carry distance and the Gap in between the carry distances so we see here and these are as I’ve mentioned before these aren’t my longest shots they’re not my shortest shots they’re in average of the nice shots that I hit um 60° 82 yards 56° 97 yards 50° 114 yards pitching wedge 126 yards um the only real one that stands out to me there is between the 56 and the 50° but that’s only because there 60 Dees of this gap between the two clubs so 17 yards that kind of is about right um wedges I’m happy with there I probably expected everything to maybe be four yards longer as an average but that is a snapshot of me hitting it today so I’m going to go with those numbers as gospel let’s move into the ions next so this is where it gets quite interesting between my pitching wedge and my nine iron there’s only nine yards Gap it’s not enough I just didn’t feel like I was hitting my 99 very far today for some reason like my average is 135 normally I’m seeing myself hit 9 closer to 150 yards at least 145 yards so I might need to have that 99 checked for the Loft and that’s what you might start to see with gaping testing like clubs can move they might have come slightly altered or whatever not saying it has been has done but it’s definitely something I’m going to check from there then everything looks pretty consistent all the way through the set from 8 iron to 7 iron 11 yards from 7 iron to 6 iron uh again n yards maybe not quite enough between 6on and 5 13 yards that’s what I want to see between five and four Ry there’s another 12 yards there so yeah there’s a little bit of discrepancy in there definitely 99 one that for me should be much closer to 145 yards about 142 I would see a 9on okay moving into three iron 3-wood driver again the gap between 4 iron and three iron for Me Maybe wasn’t quite big enough in this test only nine yards um I think on average my 3on should be Clos to about 2 15 yards um maybe just a couple of slightly misstruck shots still got into the gapping results there then we start to see a bit of a jump from three into three which i’ expect to be honest um that three was going on average today 230 yards I have seen in previous testing getting that close to 250 yards but right now today when I’m sitting off before it was going 230 um i’ again I’d like to maybe see that jump up a little bit closer to 240 maybe even 250 and an average distance for my driver pretty standard 286 yards of carry distance um which obviously you just want your driver to go as far as possible the actual right and left misses with driver weren’t too bad either so overall interesting numbers things I need to look at maybe tweak have clubs maybe just checked for L angle and Loft angles definitely Loft um I don’t see any obvious gaps maybe maybe being hindsight I could change my 50° to a 51 or 52° it’s the only real Gap I see guys thanks for watching hope you enjoy the video be sure to do a gapping testing in whichever method you can it definitely will help improve your game and hopefully I can take these numbers out of the golf course to improve my game

  1. I do see a massive benefit with gapping however I’m consistently longer off grass than off mats.. although weirdly there is one club that never changes distance no matter what measuring device I use or where I use it and that’s my 7 iron no matter what seems pretty set at around 168yds.. 🙈

  2. 15yr old Yardages in Meters because I'm in Australia

    Driver – 200m
    3 wood – 175m
    5 wood – 165m
    3 Hybrid – 180m
    3 Iron – 180m
    5 Iron – 160m
    6 Iron – 150m
    7 Iron – 140m
    8 Iron – 130m
    9 Iron – 120m
    P Wedge – 110m
    A Wedge – 100m
    S Wedge – 80m

  3. Almost exact yardages as me up to 4i! My 3 hybrid seems to go much further, at carrying 220-230 ish, my 3 wood carrying 240-250 and my driver carrying anywhere between 250-275. The hardest is always hitting the ball pure 🤣 whats the point of knowing ur good shots when u hit them like 60% of the time lol

  4. I hit all my irons and even 3 wood basically the same distance as you, give or take a couple yards, but with my driver I’d be lucky to get 290 on my best strike, where does that massive gap between our yardages come from?

  5. Rick, it may be due to Wilson usually running a more "traditional" loft profile, maybe worth comparing to previous clubs? Might need to get them all strengthened just slightly, because the gap from 9 to 8 would be small if you moved the 9 up to 145-150. Just a thought.

  6. Hey Rick – besides gapping (i.e. loft) – did you know that changing the lie angle changes the length of the club? It's only marginal, but a 2 degree change in the lie angle can be just enough to make a noticeable change in the length, and hence the heft and feel of the clubhead. So, in a good fitting the lie angles of each club should be included. Then, if an adjustment is needed it should be done BEFORE the club is assembled. Just sayin'……

  7. I know I have mentioned this before, but I thought I would say so again: Should you really say "All Right, GUYS" when it is likely that you also have ladies watching? C'mon , man.

  8. Im just starting back up after 20+ years & i only "tried" playing for 2 years back in 2004-05.. i have a REALLY hard time trying to get a full swing on my 52°, 56° & 60° wedges

  9. I cannot believe that you are going to play Wilson irons 😳😳😳
Wilson Pro Staff were my very first set of clubs back in 2003 lol

  10. I’m so excited to get my distances dialed in. I’m blessed enough to have a boss who played professionally. We just started the install of our full swing simulator setup today. So stoked!

  11. A bit odd but every shot sounds as though you’re hitting a driver lol. Something weird going on with the audio haha.

  12. The speed and distance between 3 iron and 4 iron seems way too close. Wonder why not 5 wood or even new TM driving iron.

  13. i do this a couple times a year when the seasons change. almost exactly 15mtr/17-18yrds gapping with irons/wedges. what's the thinking when aiming for just 10yrds difference ?

  14. Are those lofts standard? Might explain why you aren't hitting them as far as your previous set. If so, might have to bend them in favor of a stronger loft. But FINALLY you got new clubs!
