thanks for joining us a three time L Fargo Championship winner I know you’re happy to be back at qu Hollow if we can get some comments please yeah um always good to be back at Quil uh one of my you know not just one of my favorite stops on tour but one of my um favorite cities in America you know I’ve had so many great memories here from over the years uh first win on tour and obviously you know win in here a few times and and the I guess the support that um I’ve had from this community and the support that this tournament’s from this community over the years is it’s always been great to um experience that so yeah great great to be back and looking forward to um trying to get my fourth one here what did winning the last time out do for you I think it freed me up a little bit um it’s it’s a different win you know you’re doing it with a partner and you you’re only having to hit half the shots on a Sunday to get it done but uh I think it did the world of good to um for both of us for Shane and I just in terms of um setting us up for the rest of the season giving giving us some confidence knowing that we could get the job done whenever we needed to so um yeah I yeah I’ve had a pretty slow start to the the season especially over here in the states I you know played well in Dubai those first couple of weeks but um you know I felt like I needed something like that to to get me going and you know hopefully that’s the case the US Open just a couple couple weeks away down at Pine i m I’m sure you played there in 14 I did and uh and obviously the past champion of that event what does it mean first off to have your name on that Trophy and when you look at what what it took at Piner last time and what it looks like now yeah um yeah Martin kimer didn’t give us much of a chance last time he sort of ran away with it but uh I think you know I I love I love the I love what they’ve done with p in terms of you know making it um it’s not a traditional US Open setup the way you would think of it with long rough it’s you know it’s Fairways run off into you know those waste areas and um you know the greens are amazing I like that they that they’ve made the greens Bermuda grass now instead of um the bent that they had last time I actually didn’t someone told me that but uh I think you know it’ll play hopefully firm and fast in the way it should and um you know I like that the US Open started to go back to some of those you know traditional venues um I really I loved Lac last year I thought they did a great job with that course and that setup and um you know I’m expecting something similar at Pinehurst and then having your name oh yeah yeah I you know if yeah it’s you know I I won a US Open at Congressional that was um you know it was pretty soft and pretty you know the type of golf that you would need to play at Pinehurst to win this year is going to be very different I’m look I’m super honored that I’ve got my name on that trophy um but I’d love to get my name on it again and do it a little bit of a different way which you know I think that would was sort of be a feather in my capup that I maybe don’t have going back to Val Halland next week what do you remember about the last few minutes of trying to finish in the dark and then what looked like a gang some out there yeah um I’d say I’m a pretty I you know non-confrontational person you know I don’t I’m not a huge fan of conflict uh but you know when it when push comes to shove I will and that was one of those times when I needed to sort of assert my will on on a situation and um you know I think if I wasn’t as I guess as pushy as I as I was um I would have had to sleep on that lead and on that t-shot overnight and I just didn’t want to do that you know I think the guys up ahead were pretty unhappy with how it all unfolded but um you know I I got the result that I was looking for in the end and that’s all that matters Rory you’ve been you since U players and before that you’ve been trying to you know put some things together with your swing and your iron play and things like that does the Zurich win sort of indicate that you’ve got all that iron out or because you were only hitting half the shots do we know yet whether that’s it feels good I I the Sunday at Zurich I don’t can’t remember a time where I’ve driven the ball that good I drove drove it really well on Sunday and um put Sheen in good positions and you know that was you know probably a big reason why we why we did so well and the iron play really feels like it’s coming around I um you know that was the end of a four-week stretch for me so I uh I took a few days off when I got back home uh hit balls for the first time Sunday but sometimes to take a bit of a break and just think about it rather than actually doing it can help as well so you know I’ve I got here Monday pretty early and you know I’ve done some good practice and yeah it feels I don’t know if it’s this place and I just feel good here but feels like it’s all all starting to come around which is which is great to see can you tell us where things stand with the board and what your conversations have been if any and where where it’s going yeah there’s been a lot of conversations um sort of reminded me partly why I didn’t uh want to yeah I uh so yeah I think the it just it it got pretty complicated and pretty messy um and I think with the way the way it happened I think it opened up some Old Wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before so um yeah I think it was and and it was I think there was there was there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe um uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason um and yeah I think that you know the best best I think the best course of action is if if you know there’s some people on there that aren’t comfortable with me coming back on then um I think Webb just stays on and and and sees out his term and I think he’s he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that and I uh I just sort of keep keep doing what I’m doing uh so yeah I it’s you know I put my hand up to help and you know it was I wouldn’t say it was rejected it was just it was hard it was it was a complicated process to get through to to put me back on there so um that’s all fine no hard feelings and and we’ll all move on you you you’ve expressed your thoughts on this several times about that you I I don’t know if impatient is the right word but you’re you you’re not happy that where we’re at where it’s taken this long to get anywhere can you still affect change from the outside and what do you think the holdup is so um so in terms of I would say I’m I’m impatient because I think we’ve got this window of opportunity to get it done because both sides from a business perspective I wouldn’t say need to get it done but it makes sense um and I just think so I sort of liking it to like when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the ’90s and the Good Friday agreement you know neither side was happy you know Catholics weren’t happy protest weren’t happy but it brought peace and if that’s the you know and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated right and you know that was in you know 1998 or whatever it was and you know 20 25 30 years ahead no you know my generation doesn’t know any different it’s just this is this is what it’s always been like and we’ve never known anything but peace so uh that’s sort of how I it’s my little I guess way of trying to think about it and and trying to make both sides see that there could be a compromise here and yeah it’s probably not going to feel great for either side but if it’s a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and and and we can all get back together then I think that’s a ultimately a really good thing what what would you say is a is an is an issue that you said something that we you know we might not like somebody one side might not like but we might have to live with it what would that be what what are we talking about it could be you know if we go to more of a global schedule to to American players that are used to playing all their golf in America want to travel outside of the states 12 times a year to play tournament golf you know that’s that’s a consideration um there’s the you know the fact that you know if we all sort of come back together there’s only I think from the live contingent there’s only seven players over there that have status you know still have status or eligibility here so um but you know would it be palatable to the rest of the membership if they if they come back with you know after seeing out their contract and they’ve you know financially got ahead by you know potentially hundreds of millions of dollars over over the people that stayed yeah you know that’s a you know that’s a consideration um I don’t think it’s a huge consideration because you know it’s again like if you’re just thinking big picture and what’s good for the game of golf and what’s good for the Tom Kims of the world in 10 or 15 years time and they’re still playing professional golf you want to set it up in a way where um those younger guys have all the same opportunities if not more than the opport opportunities that we had at that time so you know this is it’s not really about the not the here and now it is a little bit but it’s also about how does how does this thing look 10 15 20 years down the line given the sort of difficulty you just trying to reinsert yourself are you any more or less optimistic that something can get done sooner rather than later um I I’m still optimistic um you know I I think web staying on is a really good thing I think he’s got a really balanced voice in all of this and I think he sees the bigger picture which is great um my fear was if Webb stepped off and you know it wasn’t me that was going in in this place what what could potentially happen so um I’m H I’m yeah I’m really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and um you know serve at the rest of his turn Rory what is it that makes you feel kind of driven or called to serve on the board and what makes you to go back and do that what is it that’s going to drive you to do so I’d say that the golf and the PJ tour has been so good to me over the years um and I just feel like it’s my obligation or duty to try to give back and try to set the next generation of players up like we were set up by the previous generation from you know so Jack Arie you know the guys that really helped build the PGA T and and help helped it Thrive and and tiger obviously to get it to where it is today I I think there’s a responsibility with every generation to try to leave leave the tour leave the place that you’re playing in a in a bit of a better spot than it than it was before that’s that’s what it about thank you thanks

  1. Good move Rory you don't need the headaches of Politics and now you have more time keeping concentration on your game and time with the family now kick some ass and win more Major's.

  2. hypocrit. He's secretly getting his LIV contract together. I now hate the man to death. He says one thing and does the exact opposite.

  3. He just got a $50 million consolation prize for prior PIP service — worth a few majors
