and it never ceases to amaze me when I do that little short swing how far the ball goes so many golfers that I see really struggle with their irons sometimes with strike but more with kind of distance and kind of accuracy so they’ll stand up over the golf ball and they’ve watched all the videos and they’ll make a swing and very often it’s that shape curving out to the right never feels a particularly good strike they feel that they’re putting quite a lot of speed into the goal swing but not really seeing any distance and a typical one there might be like 120 yards but what if I told you you could work on a little drill where you could take some speed out your swing where you maybe feel you got more control you strike the ball better launch the ball better and actually hit the ball further even though you’re putting less into the swing and as you build confidence you can put speed and length of swing back in so hopefully that sounds like the dream scenario so what we’re looking for with this little drill is that we’re going to feel like we probably make only a waist height swing but move much more like this and we can see even though that one curved a little over to the right the speed was a little bit slower the low point moved further ahead the ball launched much lower and it carried 159 yards now that’s a huge change isn’t it from 119 so what did I do differently there than I see most golfers do well it’s about how we create an impact position much more this way it impact like all the best players in the world do as opposed to an impact much more like that which you see much more mid to high handicap has creating so sounds dead simple doesn’t it so the first thing I think we need to understand is that when golfers get set at a dress aess and impact are not the same position and I see this far too often with golfers that they’re all almost trying to get back to where they were at a dress but it’s not like that we see much more weight into that lead side we see the shaft lean much more forward and the the hips particularly turned more towards the target so the little drill we’re going to work on is we’re only initially going to get get you feeling like you’re swinging to about waist height but I want you to work through this video with me when you take the club back initially to about waist height you’ll probably see something like that where the face is starting to look more up to the sky so I want you to feel like as you swing back you feel that the club face looks more down towards where the ball will be and you’re going to try and get that Leading Edge more at the same angle as your spine Angle now some of you might feel that you turning the left hand down so might feel that you keep the right hand more on top of the club however you do that that’s fine and initially I just want you to try and hit some shots like that so just waist height you probably get a little bit longer and then just hit the shot now initially what you’ll probably see with a lot of you is the ball suddenly curve differently over to the left you’ll notice the strike will improve massively and it actually won’t go much shorter than the full swing now the reason for that is most golfers are presenting that club face wide open at impact and slicing across the ball and as soon as you start getting that club face in a more neutral position actually the club face is going to be more closed at impact so I’m not going to hit lots of shots in the video but I want you to hit a few like that and if you start seeing that ball curve round to the left that is a good thing for now so once you get that feel for the back swing then need to start working on how we’re going to get the club back at impact so once we’re here we’re going to feel like the weight’s going to shift towards the Target and then you’re going to try and feel that that left hip stops going towards the Target and starts working back and even behind you a little bit but we need to stop it going this way so you have a couple of practice rings that felt great and you’ll notice again for a lot of you you’ll probably start if you’re on the driving range making much more contact with the mat if you’re on Turf you’ll suddenly start noticing that you’re taking divots probably bigger divots but more importantly they’re after the golf ball every time so hopefully you can see as we’re working through these little stages we’re seeing added bonuses to how we’re going to strike the ball every step of the way so the beauty is you get that feel there then you want to get that feel with the ball that felt good and we can see there 75 mph Club speed low Point 2 in ahead face still a little bit closed Club a little bit more from the inside launching very low at 13° and 145 yards carry now what we want to do is we want to hit a few of those feeling waist height almost feel nice and whether I said aggressive or dynamic about it I think most guys feel very static in the goal s and if we want the ball to go further need to be a little bit more athletic and a bit more Dynamic so once you’ve done a few at that waist height swing then start building a little bit more length into the back swing and it never ceases to amaze me when I do that little short swing how far the ball goes and we see there 83 mph nearly 4 in ahead face and path very neutral launching at 14.6 and carrying 159 yards and that for me still feels very short in the back swing so then I would just continue with that for a few and then gradually get longer and longer and see what length of Swing you get to until you start losing that strike and added distance so I’m going to do probably two more swings one a little bit longer than the previous one didn’t feel quite as good a strike but very quick 87 M hour 2.3 inches ahead launching at 16 and just being off center cost me a little bit of carry but still much longer than before now I think I can go just a little bit longer than that getting the club passing through that point and then really focusing on that move in the down swing again didn’t feel the best of contacts pretty near in the middle to be fair but see I didn’t pick up any speed there still 87 mph launching at 17° carrying at 164 now I’m not finish on that one cuz I reckon I’ve got one more that could be a little bit quicker and I know the idea of this video was you could swing slower and hit the ball further and we Prov that very quickly but then if you can put speed back in and maintain what we’re talking about you’re just going to hit the ball further than ever so let’s go one last one really focus on making a good movement and the ball will do what the club tells it felt good little draw one so 87 mph Club speed 2.8 in ahead launching just under 18 and carrying at 172 so you can see address an impact we don’t want to be here or here like I see a lot of golfers we want to see keep that club face a bit more hooded once you get back shift towards the Target and then get that left hip clearing out the way and if you can work short swings and build some length in not only could you swing slower and hit the ball further but you actually in time might start swinging faster and hitting the ball super long and some distances you never thought you might do
