hey guys it’s Michael welcome back to scratch Golf Academy and today I’m going to talk about one of the Misunderstood topics in the golf sing which is how to rotate properly you see all the pros with some crazy rotation and hip action well there’s a certain way to do it and a certain way not to do it and we’re going to address both of those in today’s video so the biggest thing that I see in terms of when I give lessons to my students is them thinking that they’re rotating properly and then actually not so biggest thing that I see is they take it back to the top of their swing they think they’re turning a ton like this either one of two things happen the first thing is they turn so much they dip the back shoulder down and they stick it right into the ground and they miss it to the right or they think that they’re turning but they’re really just sliding their hips so far forward the club gets stuck and they get absolutely no power and no compression so we’re going to talk about a drill that you can do to help understand rotation and then how it transitions into your normal swing so in terms of the drill you’re going to start with your feet together like this and in terms of rotation I want you to feel when you take the club back your back pocket turns behind you like this now with this drill you’re going to get some instant feedback if you start swaying side to side like this and you take it back you’re going to lose your balance so I want you to be able to keep your balance like this turn like you’re taking the club Behind you feel your back pocket turn behind you like this and then on the way through feel your front pocket turn behind you like this essentially this motion here and here and this is how it looks from this angle feel feet together turn turn and then you can actually hit a ball with this drill and you’re only going to go for about 50 yard shot here nothing crazy turn it back turn it through nice and straight and if you start swinging too hard or losing your balance you know that you’re swaying and not properly rotating so the question is how do we transition that into our normal swing so you’re going to take your normal stance here about shoulder width right same exact Concepts feel your back hip turned behind you on the way through and then I get a lot of questions saying Michael how do we feel rotation into the front side and a weight shift to the front side without sliding forward so it’s essentially exactly what I was explaining before we get to the top of our swing here turn it turn your front hip behind you like this and the way I feel it is I’m imagine my backside is up against the wall here and if I’m here I want to keep the pressure on the wall feel my hips turn this way someone was sinking back into my hip here and then turning it through and now when I’m in this position right here all of my weight is on my front side we have great shling on the way through super good compression and that way we get that tesque compression that we are looking for so slow motion here take it to the top pause good turn on the way back like this now we feel our hips sink back a little bit so we’re sinking back slightly now we can easily feel that turn our chest is down we haven’t slid forward at all we’re more so in this position all my weight now is on my front side you can’t tell me that you don’t have a weight shift there CU you’ll feel on your left side and your left glute now you can come all the way through and finish your swing so terms of a swing you can go slow motion first to start here feel a nice turn come down and through feel the turn put also a camera angle across from you that way you can see see whether you’re shifting or not and then what you can do is slowly build up into a full swing and this is how you get that rotation usually most people want to feel some rotation initiating the downswing you don’t want to feel this initiating the downswing feel more so staying back and turning initiating the down swing you’ll see a lot of success there terms of full swing full power looks something like this nice slow controlled smooth feeling everything clear but staying back not forward right staying back you’ll still have a little shift forward but we don’t want any drastic slide so give that a try I think it’ll help you out a lot make sure to subscribe scratch golf for some more free tips from me uh and the other people on scratch golf check out my practice plan in the link below and I’ll see you guys out here real soon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
