Adrian Otaegui Winning Highlights | 2024 Volvo China Open

Spaniard Adrian Otaegui overturned a 5-shot deficit thanks to a brilliant final round 65 to secure the Volvo China Open by one stroke.

For the first time since 2019, the Volvo China Open is returning to the DP World Tour schedule at Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen. Jordan Smith will be teeing it up in China this week. He’s on track to qualify for next month’s U.S. PGA Championship by virtue of his world ranking and performances to start the season. He played well to claim T2 at the Jonsson Workwear Open last month and solo fourth at the Dubai Invitational at the start of the year. He also finished 5T at this week’s venue in Shenzhen in 2019. Tom McKibbin will also be in the field this week. He’s claimed six top-20s so far this season – including a fourth-place finish at the Qatar Masters in February. Sebastian Söderberg will also fancy his chances this week. After claiming his second consecutive runner-up finish on the Asian Swing in Japan, the Swede climbed to eighth on the season-long Race to Dubai Rankings. He also claimed top-10s in Mauritius, Ras Al Khaimah and Bahrain which has put him in prime position to play in next month’s PGA Championship. Others to look out for are Dylan Frittelli, Yannik Paul and Alexander Levy.

[Applause] good more of a known quantity here yeah good player hits it very straight doesn’t give a lot away he’s sort of he’s he’s one of the danger men he’s five behind he’ll be thinking he can go out and win this but I think he’ll need a fast start it’s opening hole he quite gentle it’s a it’s a reasonably wide Fairway up the hill so it does offer up a good chance for three oh come on Adrian that was longer than usual yes it was absolutely maybe he’s had a chat with a psychologist overnight [Applause] we go up ahead to at e third missed out a chance on one 88 yards just 8 yards more than the first half so would have had somewhat of a feel yeah he won’t be missing that long and left like his playing partner that’s exactly where you’re looking it’s very warm out here guys rocking the sweat Tash today spoke to Adrian Al I just said what you get out to yesterday he just been putting in his room pretty much so hopefully that practice can pay off with this one he’s got a good idea of short that’s a bonus half a club short with the second charges and picks it out of the hole there’s the perfect start two behind SOI good t- shot here at the six what have we got in this hole in length 375 yards so in the players Minds this is really is a very good birdie chance this one not hitting much in there just aiming a little right at the flag though gathers onto that pin a little bit a little bit of a missed opportunity he likes to just move those doesn’t he very slightly in the air from that sort of distance he just turns it slightly oh I like the way he plays those shot yeah he gets the sort of right hand going I think that comes back to the fact he’s not the longest off the te and he’s naturally wants to see that ball moving right to left trying to draw into that left flag beautifully played that coming to get within one of the lead for Adrian Takei to move within one well you’d think that would drop at that pace he certainly did yeah absolutely there’s a few te’s back I’ve hit sort of four and five irons into this so yeah it’s very much a chance yeah you get the old mozes around that semi- rough you need to stay on The Fairway and see yeah it’s not nice got Sweet Blood as well they love it now takey solid 99 you’re playing a little bit downhill from this bit of elevation good shot consider he draws yeah right hand pin not easy for him to get to but short iron helps just inside right Edge for pigy for a wonderful part this would be to get within one and this time he makes it we said not to count him out does take quite a while to hit a shot to say I think the QE2 turns in a circle a bit quicker it’s down the right side that’s okay yep excellent the second shot here on nine is quite deceptive more often than not players do come up Shy because you go downhill and then back up playing off a downhill slope up to raise green so difficult one to judge 231 yards for AI yeah drawing it right to left well done and then there was three how quickly he’s whittled down the five shot deficit he was staring at at the start of the day up ahead at the green green side is Adrian atagi yeah long left it was quite a good Miss but left him a difficult pitch but down grain will help him that’s a nice shot yeah sometimes you look at people and you you don’t think karaoke Richard birdie P fori down the hill not much in this nicely done tidy there’s not much room left or long of it but this pin is located in a bit of a tiar maybe 5x five yards or so so you got to be pin accurate very easy to come up Shy with a bit of spin end up further away numbers everything yeah good shot oh a [Applause] c push it a little bit yeah now there a chance here beautiful t-shot very nearly hold it won himself an em90 car this to get to 17 he’s done it he well 600 today I was going to say he’s within one but he’s not he’s going to be tied for the lead well it sounds like things are getting a little bit interesting here that was a welcome birdy for AI once again you got water all the way down the right this golf course really works its way around the dragons late bunker left he hasn’t miss the F has he no no he’s found it and see he’s okay so about 10 ft right of the TV tower he’s ey it up and down must like that must be on the green surely that’s great shot excellent stuff exactly where he was sort of aiming would have liked to have moved it a little more left to right but trust me he’s happy for that [Music] now on it way should move a little right to left at the end coming round towards the hole very nice from Adrian AI That’s him to 18 under had you worried there slightly you said he wasn’t going to hold it he give it a good go yeah he gave a very good go didn’t he great P from 50 ft three birdies in the last five when you need to do it brilliant stuff and he’s out on his own on top back on the tea Adriane down to 18 and that will do nicely on the short grass we’ll be able to prefer the light so 145 he were saying I presume that’s in uh meters I would think for him you see the Volvo side at the back of the green it’s the first V on the left really is his line I said going knew in the air wasn’t quite enough just needed another I’d say another club yeah right on it wasn’t it just slightly heavy and in it goes will it be enough for Adrien AI to take the Volvo China open it was an excellent final day of 65 he applied pressure all the way through he’s done his job today now it’s over to the rest of the field and it all belongs to Adrien and shenzen Confirmation now Adrian AI is the Volvo China open Champion for 2024 Adrian many congratulations you had a long wait but that wait is now over how does it feel to get the confirmation that you’ve won thank you iny yes I’m I’m very very happy I’m extremely happy um obviously I had to wait a little bit since uh since I finished uh see what was happening on the last group but uh luckily for me uh things turned turn up well and I’m I’m extremely happy from the very beginning you looked extremely calm how did you control your emotions out there well I don’t know I mean uh I was starting five shots back um I I knew I just I just I just tried to didn’t didn’t look at the little board uh not think about the result just play my game same as I played on Thursday and Friday and uh and it’s a course that I I think if I mean I think if things go well I can have lots of biry chances so I’ve been I’ve been putting well I’ve been actually feeling like more and more confident through the week with the Potter so I knew that if I had bir chances I would I would well I could potentially haul a few um so so yeah I told you before I think I I was actually feeling more and more calm through uh like through the round so I hit I hit some I did hit some very very good shots on the last few holes um I think uh well the the the four iron I hit on on 16 was uh was very good I nearly hold it uh the three W on 17 second shot was uh was extremely good so um yeah I just just felt good and just kept playing my game were you aware of what you had to play for so a win this week actually confirms your third spot in the Asian swing that gets you in the PGA Championship well that’s uh that’s very good news um you uh being being on the PGA playing some Majors this year was a was a big goal for me um so that’s that’s a very good new that I’ll be on the PGA in in two weeks so so
