GRF Golf Head Coach Marcus discusses the difference between conscious & unconscious competence and incompetence, some misconceptions of learning, then as always, the practical application in the golf swing. This is crucial information for anyone who wants to get better at golf and get a lower handicap in a shorter span of time.

think about how you’ve learned to move you didn’t really know what you were doing yeah yeah so in terms of walking or throwing we’ve got no idea people talk about you’re unconsciously incompetent then you become consciously incompetent then you’re consciously competent we know we’re just unconsciously incompetent and then suddenly we become unconsciously competent we’re never really conscious about the movement and every sport you’ve played and every movement you ever make apart from properly golf you never even think about getting in the morning cleaning your teeth going and getting your games going have breakfast going and getting your car going to work you never want think about how you move going and playing football I’m sure kayaking and all this stuff there’s technique you never think about how you’re actually moving we’re learning golf it’s totally different way we’re trying to be consciously competent and to a point where if we do it enough it becomes unconscious but it never does so you’re always having to be conscious which means you’re always playing under a mental load which means on the golf course you’re generally playing golf swing not golf you you do you kind of building your own little checkpoints or such that you do it any no you don’t think he you’re going to run up and kick the ball or whatever you you just do it we’ve got to just create the opportunity for us to make a good swing and the body will actually join the darts you’re essentially using the mechanics you’d push off with really early the vertical gone way early in your down swing so I’ve got to be coming down more the then coming up so you’ve gradually loaded and then you’ve pushed off your backf hardly loaded into left and it’s all way too early and your body even starts loading again as you swing down this is all going to change you’re using a lot of body mass to move pressure instead of using right okay pressure to the to the move mass and then be able to rotate and use your body more efficiently the same kind of movement vocabulary just use it in a different way as opposed to like this and to get this board over there you’re using extension so now that’s all gone on can’t use anything to push off the ground I’ve already used the mechanism to push off the ground but if I rck this board in flexion now everything’s flexed you got that now I can spring once we start to recognize our Shi pressure and how we can orientate our body relative to that pressure shift we just create the opportunity to swing the club a different way and strike the ball differently so the intention of the shot is so much easier to perform with the movement what most people do first is this like a pendulum like a like a grandfather CL kind action but we want the wrecking ball and you can start to use the arms are are behind way behind and you’ve got all this rotation to react you’ve got the body that can now got all this you can push off and all this can react you wa it to use whereas if you’re doing this with it push off but there’s no nothing to react with so gone yeah so what you’re doing is you’re swaying okay and then rotate so that’s what happens first that’s why you’re in so we we’re going and then [Music] coming really but that’s just that doesn’t take a journey like this just because you so you’re trying to constrain your upper body you say you can see the internal turn wheil the conflict and you’re trying to override intention and and and grit and conscious competence so that’s good so can you keep hold of this okay so sway to me rock the board and then rotate now keep it behind you as you as you sway yeah and then when you get to the side hold it there so as soon as you feel that board you here now you can stay on this side and just rotate that’s it rotate rotate rotate rotate now once it’s over here keep it in front of you R back rotate now Rock through rotate see you rock rotate that’s it there you go nice excellent yes okay you’re in control of this you’ve got to boss this when you go bang bang you go when you want yeah just keep your arms straight as you do it so it’s not a big swing ready Rock the board then swing yes you had it perfect Rock the board no stop that that’s lag that’s why it feels weird cuz it CLS laging behind you throwing look at this just let the lag the inclination will be to control it and start to tension and start to try and move everything together we don’t want that we’ve got to break up the system this is like let go physically let him go rocking the board earlier and look you get more speed yeah different feeling yeah I can feel that now I actually feel more connected to the weight of the club perfect do it like that that’s almost feel like that actually what makes me want to use your body jump on the map let’s have a few swings brilliant that feel different yeah looks different see where his clubs going there’s no over the top movement anything so swing out there now to the right just like you did a minute ago just exploring that space out there with using your body movement fantastic I mean you even got a bit of draw there and at the minute it’s a still an early release but your body movement is showing now you can start you can swing the still I need to be getting it yeah look at that fantastic out to the right though yes brilliant okay so these got to commit to going much cuz I think in my mind I had a small movement and then I was going back and then trying but it’s it much more ABD dominantly to come down cuz we know you were predominantly hanging back labored on your left right side look at that fantastic fantastic well done you’re starting to get a draw yeah all the time of course we know we’re adding Loft but you’re starting to ball right and drawer in it so this means your path is right up the face fantastic nice good you’re already regulating it yeah I feel I feel what they say that trying to get that that feeling of the the club and there that’s a drop in the we’ not even have to do that much work on it drop just grip it with your left hand what I want you to explore is this this is something that’s how we want to rotate face so you can feel and that is the toe down D it you see okay so it’s not putting that excessive stress on your wrist in extension yeah and it’s allowing you to swing over here and rotate the face yeah yeah so it’s going to it’s going to draw it and it’s going to bring the LOF down all that was missing your low point mve back because you fell back right okay so you can use that you’ll work your way into that feeling yeah I see brilliant so see the drawer yes it was a bit clean but you dof in the golf club yeah because you closing the face you dof it so bring the ball flight down so you’ve got your draw that you had before so you can let yourself shift out to that right use that space out there yeah I’ve got eight iron in the hands by the way no problem so if you want to it lower shift and let yourself just take your grip I think I think it’s just that your GP both hands your grip just letting yourself just want you to feel that that toe hit the floor right you feel that then let it carry on notice how that feels so different yeah there yeah swing back and through to there for me yeah just to hear and bounce the toe off the floor I want to hear the bounce bouncer yeah to me yes different feeling yeah so notice this wrist it’s not being compromised in terms of all that extension go again yeah and then your elbows can fold the I I now I’m getting that feeling I I suddenly it feels like that’s somewhere for the club to go yeah fantastic have another go nice and easy let your body weight shift just like board well played so you’re starting to play a well a consistent shape oh yeah very much upper body so what you’d do yeah you’d have this behind you there a reset you i’ take this to the range and have it at the side of the mat yeah I would suggest swinging It Forward yeah okay on one back on two forward on three and into a finish no ball swing the club forward now brought the board back then Rock forward and then swing through and again so it’s a 1 two 3 four so it’s one 2 three four good now out to the right your number three will take you to the right one two three four hold it there bounce the toe for me off the ground do a little tiny swing to deep divot that we just did a minute ago yeah but bigger swing half a swing out to the right there you go it made your body move you see look there you go and then you into a finish your elbows just relax now again let your elbows relax into a full finish that’s it so you’re just feeding in all the time the feelings with the exercises to let it just gradually just filter through fantastic and more shift to the right you’ve really got to get out there where I was with a hoop that’s better there you go fantastic well done oh sound good felt nice and clean oh that’s awesome sound good look at that see it yeah beautiful isn’t it yeah same shape every time down down going in the same place tell I can feel it on my hi so like that that extra movement that we’re doing [Music]
