Jake Knapp leads CJ Cup Byron Nelson two days into tournament debut | Golf Central | Golf Channel

golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome tour golf ball from Callaway welcome into our golf Central Studios I am Matt Adams there certainly was some drama to finish the day at the CJ cup Byron Nelson it started with Jordan spe he needed to make this had a hole it from the 18th Fairway in order to be around for the weekend at a place where he has had so much history remember when we were introduced to Jordan spe when he was but 16 years old but alas it didn’t work out for Jordan spe as he would be going home here is the story of the day you can see three bogeys on his card The Divide between staying around for the weekend and His Four under Mark was two strokes on that same green in fact in the same group Jason day faced this putt to be around four the weekend riding it up the Ridge and dead into the heart of the hole so Jason day will make it to Saturday and Sunday here’s a look at his scorecard he too with three bogeys on the day but a one under 70 and a 6 under Mark was enough to make it through the cut the lead right now 14 under belongs to Jake nap and Jake did it with only 28 putts today after he finished up he addressed the media the Mexico the fairways I feel like are cut a lot wider I mean this place is wide from like trouble to trouble but t-shots like like number nine um number five um I mean there’s still just some t-shots that you just have to kind of avoid some things and and hit good good shots to give yourself a chance to go to the green for two so um it’s definitely a little bit more you want to be in the Fairway especially with the rough the way it is it’s easy to catch Flyers as it gets dried out so um just been trying to put it in the Fairway as much as I can you had that hot stretch from Tori through cognizant didn’t quite keep it up the last couple starts anything differentiating kind of those two periods of golf yeah I mean I think I I think I just got a little tired uh I think mentally it was just a lot going on and you know I wouldn’t say necessarily life-changing just everything got a lot busier and days got longer so it was just a bit of an adjustment and uh didn’t feel like I had the the same energy throughout the day kind of in some of those weeks which was kind of a bummer so um decided to take last week off and give myself a good reset at home and work on some things I’d been struggling with and you know feel like it’s it’s working out this week so far Jake the only blemish on the card today was at three how important was it to come back at four and get a pretty good long birdie putt yeah um you know obviously a putt you’re not necessarily trying to make but uh but yeah I felt like hit a good iron shot and Putt didn’t have a ton of movement on it and um I hit it a little bit harder than I would have liked and luckily it was on a good line and went in obviously a lot of people are getting familiar with your story a couple years ago you were you know I guess you were working in a bar you were doing other stuff trying to get back what does it mean to look back two years to now to have a win on tour and now be here leading a tournament Midway to another one a couple weeks later yeah it’s just um you know even when I was doing any of that kind of stuff I always knew this is what I wanted to do and and kind of felt like it’s where I should be and just wasn’t wasn’t there yet and uh just kept working away and sticking at it and had a good year last year and just letting that keep on keep on going wondering about the significance of opening with two rounds of 64 or better look at the company that Jake knap is now in Tiger did it in 1997 he went on to win Scotty Sheffer did it in 2023 settled into a tie for fifth what will happen with Jake knap we know that family is important to him and at 81 years young this is his great aunt her name is Mary Hard Castle Thomas with her custom t-shirt saying nap time Rex hogard caught up with her to find out exactly what was going on what’s it like to be out and watch him now after he’s won on the PGA tour established himself now leading a PGA Tour event again it’s awesome it’s really really awesome we saw him years ago when he was an amateur and playing in in uh Chicago we happen to go over there to see him so it’s been great to watch him grow and learn and be on the tour how exciting was it to watch him win earlier this season on the P PJ tour we were just estatic we watched him on television and yeah of course we had to text everybody and let everybody know and we have uh my husband plays in a golf group and they’ve all become big fans so they’re always texting him and giving us pictures and stuff off of Television so it’s it’s been a change of life kind of it’s given us something to do on the weekends we’re not out working in the yard now I have to ask whose idea was a t-shirt uh actually it was Jake’s girlfriend if you were saw the Mexican open they were there they had they were from Canada and we thought it was a great idea so I had them made up with a t-shirt company that I deal with and uh it’s been so much fun to wear them and how many did you have made cuz I’m I’m guessing that people are going to want them more more they do we had a dozen made we sent some I think we sent six to Jake’s dad in California and kept the rest for ourselves and we’ve been kind of I mostly get to wear them because I don’t know why cuz I’m not afraid to I guess any plans to make some more considering that he’s leading again yes we definitely are going to make some more Jake knap kind of alluded to it in his interview with the media about his Pathway to getting where he is now on the PGA tour a winner he is a PGA Tour rookie and arguably along with Nick Dunlap those are the names that are being discussed right now for rookie of the year he won the 2024 Mexico open at fedon he entered the week 25th in FedEx Cup standings will he improve that with his performance over the next couple of days he finished 13th in the corn fairy tour standings in 2023 to get his status Matt Wallace is one shot back and you can see a five under 66 today and only 27 putts that were helped by a very lethal wedge as well was quite beneficial afterwards Matt Wallace met with the media the strategy today was hit it as hard as I could really um that pin was was really tricky if you lay it up there’s a massive Ridge about 5 yards short of it that you you can’t lay it far enough back to get some Spin and then it’s quite a tight pin so my strategy today was get it as close as possible but not be in the bunker right and obviously not in the water left so hit as good a shot as I can I know I could get probably to the front on a really good one and I’ve just I’ve I’m obviously confident so I swung it a little bit FAS a bit quicker I hit it perfect on the right line little draw and uh I pitched it about 315 into the wind and then rolled her in so I’d like to be able to do that all the time um and I’d make quite a lot of money if I did that but now I know what it feels like to be Rory I need to ask you about that second shot on nine your last hole as talk us through that a little bit well I thought I hit a really good t-shot I hammered it down the left side and I thought do you know what that’s that’s the Short Line it’s going to be tight to the trees but I didn’t think it would hit it but I think it hit the tree came down obviously got a little bit lucky hitting the C path and just staying there and when I got up there I was like oh no bother but I haven’t hit it off hard mud in a while so I took it back with a two onon I thought the two on was was the place to get it a bit further up than just the 4 ir and be left uh the two would take out the the water from what I thought um but it got caught on the way back and then on the way through I didn’t you know want to lean on it a bit so I just tried to pick it and I picked it too much and I topped it so I haven’t topped one in a while but I’m laughing now because I’ve managed to find it and and get it up and well into the green and tup how cool is this at 16 years 7 months and 3 days amateur Chris Kim from London becomes the youngest player to make a cut on the PGA tour since 2015 all right folks we cannot wait join us pregame at noon tomorrow I live live coverage kicks off at 1:00 p.m. eastern time [Music] a
