In this video, I share a concept for the golf swing that has been helpful to me and the players I coach. It’s based on a grid design I learned from my mentor, Andy Plummer, and clarifies the circular motion inherent in the golf swing. Using alignment sticks, I create a model that demonstrates how the club and hands follow distinct paths, highlighting the double pendulum effect and rotation. The setup, inspired by Ben Hogan’s “plane of glass,” emphasizes how the club arcs along a specific plane, with a focus on the low point and the path from shaft parallel to the ground through to impact. I illustrate how to avoid common mistakes like extreme in-to-out or over-the-top swings. This approach offers a visual guide for improving the golf swing, providing players with a clear framework to practice and understand swing mechanics.

all right what’s going on everybody I hope this video finds you well super special video uh for me it’s been very helpful for me players that I coach uh and I want to share it with you it’s how do we design how we design our golf swing around this grid so this video and this grid that I’m about to show you this is something that I was uh I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from a a mentor M Andy plumber um I think this is one of the things for me that has really brought some more clarity to how a golf swing operates so when we look at how the golf swing works first thing that I think we would all agree with is the golf swing works on a circular motion or an arc so when we look at other sports that we play that are circular motions we could take baseball so if we took baseball we took baseball there’s a plane guys so this would be the plane in which we would hit a baseball in guys so it would be parallel to the ground working in a circular motion so being able to take that concept and realize and understand that the golf swing operates on an arc model we now can actually dictate we can actually decide and say every Circle has a center and we can place a point for where the center of our golf swing or the center of our Arc would be so what I have laid down here on the ground is I have these two white sticks right here which we would refer to and we would call Target line now this other stick from face on here we would call this low point so let’s take our plane again that’s parallel to the ground so our first connection to the object that we swing would be the left hand so our first actual pendulum or circular movement that we create would be around the lead shoulder so this would be our very first this would be our very first Arc that we’re actually creating around this point that I put here on the ground so lead shoulder you probably hear me talk about this a lot I call this low point so here is the Arc of our lead shoulder now our next placement our first connection to the actual Golf Club if I hold a club here our first connection to the golf club is the grip okay so our lead hand connects to the grip so this now forms this now forms a double pendulum uh so this is now creating a swing on this plane now the neat thing about a double pendulum is I can hinge it this way and I could work it around me that direction I could work it around me this direction and this is where this is where the skill set of swinging a club comes in if it was an individual single pendulum this would probably be a lot easier but we wouldn’t be able to create as much speed with the levers that we have access to now going into that this is why I think truthfully if we look at baseball I think baseball should be significantly harder than golf uh a lot of us it comes more naturally and the reason I think that is the reason I that is is because it’s played on a plane that’s parallel to the ground and then if we look at our cone our dispersion pattern we have to keep it inside of a 90° angle and we also get multiple attempts golf we get one attempt and our cone is not this wide our cone’s this wide so the cone in the area that we’re trying to keep this inside of is a lot more difficult we also can take into account the instrument the club face has twist to it which creates a face to path relationship which creates curve uh so we have to align this this small piece of metal with a golf ball operating on an inclined plane working on an arc this is why I think golf is a more difficult sport for a lot of us to comprehend so if I were to say this man I wish this piece that I’m about to show you here was the very first thing I would have ever learned in golf so that I could actually start to comprehend how the golf club works on an arc regardless regardless of what your model is whether it be staying centered moving off of it we can still design golf swings around a grid like this we design them around low Point how low Point Moves In Space where we get it back to and how this is still creating an arc so this is what I love about this model right here is we can design golf swings around this regardless of what regardless of what your your mythology is or what you believe in we still have to abide by the circular motion especially down here from hip high to hip high so when we build out this grid again this is the first thing I wish I would have ever learned in golf so when we go into building out this grid so that we actually have something to be able to see visualize trace and comprehend how a golf swing actually works the first thing that we need to design it around is the golf club we’re using so here’s low point so this golf club right here would have a plane this would be more of a vertical plane this would be a lower more shallow plane right here guys so if we take the golf club and we let it rest exactly how it sits here I would slide an alignment stick in underneath that and I would say all right there here’s my starting reference from a plain perspective based off of low Point here from face on so this is this is what we’re designing everything around right here now I’ve got two alignment sticks that are taped together and I’m going to put them in the ground right here on the same plane that this is sitting so now we’re building this out here threedimensional in space so we would go in here I’m going to do the same thing right there so now we’ve basically what we’ve formed right here is this plane that we’ve started with this plane that we’ve started with with a seven iron would be the same right in here so now we can actually project three-dimensionally in space how the golf club works on more of an inclined plane how it would be working back how it would be working down returning to low point and how it would be arcing around so this is like what Hogan talked about this is Hogan’s plane of glass right here so I’ll get out of the way so you can see this so this right here this would be Hogan’s plane of glass that he was always talking about and you can see it in his book that he wrote uh his five fundamentals he talks about this plane of glass we look at his golf swing I would say his golf swing was designed around a concept and a theory that looked like this the club would Arc back in it would work up on this plane he kept it on this plane worked back down arced down here to six moved to Seven 8 nine and moved around P10 so now that we know that this is our plane we know that this is working on an arc model now we can we can start to design this on the ground for what it actually looks like so if we look at how the club would actually work I’m going to use yellow here for the actual Arc and movements of the center of the golf club so the co of the golf club so this would be the direction the golf club would work on an arc right here so we can see how this is angling and working in away from Target line and we can see right in here I’m going to do the same thing over here now we can see how that is arcing in and you notice this is this is fairly this is symmetrical this is symmetrical to to one another so this would be the actual Arc of the golf club projected here on the ground on our plane so if we came in here and we looked at this the golf club would work on this Arc back to here return to there and work around that so low point lead shoulder the club would arc on this work back to here and work around that so that would be the clubs movements right there now when we look at what actually moves the golf club our first connection to the club would be our hands or our grip so we could call this we can call this hand path so we take hand path we can now project this on the ground this would be our most basic model that I think could help a lot of us out and being able to comprehend how the golf swing works so we look at that right there now we can see we have an arc or a hand path and we have a club Arc in relation to Target line and our swing plane so I’m going to set this one down for a sec so here’s the club there’s a low point so now from this low point right here this is what we would design all of our shots and ins side of we’re not going to do all of that stuff ball position face to path relationships and here this is just explaining the fundamental movements of how the club would work more on an acting Arc the club head would trace the yellow the hands would trace the orange I would work this to where this is on plane with my vertical swing plane that I’ve set would bring this back down the hands are back on the arm orange clubs back on the yellow low point and then this starts to Arc around okay so this gives us a model something that we would have now on the ground both project in lines in relation to Target line in relation to a vertical swing plane the movements of the actual Golf Club projected both on the ground and in Space the hand path and how we could actually start to design a swing around this now are we going to see every single player on planet Earth look like this this this and this no but what I would tell you where you’re going to see the majority of them is from P6 which would be shaft parallel to the ground P6 p7 p8 we’re going to see a lot of similarities in just about every really good ball Striker now there are some ball Strikers who swing it out release it and they’re good at timing that I think if you’re a player that is struggling with the actual concept of what your golf swing is this is a really good starting place this is a great place to start designing something like this on the ground you don’t have to leave these two sticks in right here in fact I could show you we could we could set something up right here to where we could hit a golf ball ball I’m going to place the ball slightly behind low point now what you’ll start to notice is how this golf club Works around the ark right there okay this having this station set up for hitting golf balls I think can be extremely beneficial especially for the players that are struggling with visualizing or deciding a concept for how they’re actually going to move the golf club this at least gives us a relationship that picking it up and out is not any good rolling it low and inside is not very good swinging it way into out and releasing it doesn’t fit inside of this and coming over the top and against this wouldn’t fit inside of what we see on the ground right here so even starting out if we were just right in here and I said okay I’m going to just trace this from here to here okay from basically P6 to p8 going to go 6 to 8 6 to 8 and just Trace that visually hit some shots inside of it that would start to produce some of our geometry and then later on we’ll be able to help you design shots inside of it with ball position face to path relationships how the face sits in relation to the Leading Edge of the club and so forth so this is a model that is super important to me I’m very thankful that I was able to to learn learn this I think it’s something that can really help out a lot of players right here which is why I wanted to share this with you all uh I hope you take I hope you take a lot of this in I would really really really get to comprehending this this is a very simple grid that we can build out right here that you could practice inside of again regardless of what your method is and I think you could see some positives to being able to comprehend how your golf swing should actually work a little bit better so if you have any question questions whatsoever   1. I have seen other golf instructors use the hoola hoop to show low point, but the way they demonstrate it makes you think the low point is relative to the spine and not the lead shoulder.

    I know that the Golfing Machine book specifically points out the low point is beneath the lead shoulder, the pivot is around the spine, and that the hinge action of the lead arm and shoulder affect the ball flight. With the advent of 3d, is the concept of hinge action still shown to be a valid concept?

  2. Love the grid. Quick question hitting ball with the I range stick setup angled (like you did putting it into ground) with a pool noodle on the alignment stick would be a great block practice station, correct? Then chalk lines for target, low point, clubhead path and hand path. You could do 5-10 rehearsals and hit one.
