If you play with soft, forged golf irons, then you need to have the loft and lie angles for your irons checked and adjusted periodically.

With the aid of a golf loft and lie machine, your PGA Professional can make accurate adjustments to the lofts and lie angles of your golf clubs. Your pro can advise you on the ideal settings to suit your game and help you achieve consistent distance gapping between your irons.

Lofts are fairly easy to understand – If you are hitting a particular club to high or too low, then you can identify this and your pro can adjust the lofts accordingly.

The lie angle of your irons is a little more complicated and has an effect on you accuracy. If your club’s lie angle is too flat, this can effectively open your clubface. If the lie angle is too upright on a particular iron, then the clubface can be more closed at setup and hooks can result.

It’s also an important part of the process, to have your PGA Professional give you a club fitting. Even if you don’t intend to purchase a new set of irons right away, the knowledge you gain about your ideal lofts and lies is worth the investment.

Golf Coaches, Not Teachers

The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.

Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!

Skill Development vs Technical Changes

Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.

External Focus of Attention

Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.

good golfers while the rain is back in Sydney and the wind I’m going to do something indoors today I’m going to show you how we adjust the Loft and lies of a set of irons let’s hop inside where it’s a bit drier and a lot warmer our player wants his irons at 1° flatter than standard and with 1 Dee more Loft so first thing we need to do is find out what standard is so the set is a set of shx ZX7 irons so we hop onto the shrien website all of the specs are there all the Lofts and lies we’ve also got how much offset and length but we’re not touching those it’s just the Loft and line we’re looking at so I’m going to write those down so we know where we’re going to start from this is our Loft and line machine it’s called an auditor it’s from golf mechanics and it’s a digital machine so very accurate first thing we need to do is calibrate it so switch it on here and to calibrate we need to get it into a certain position here so that it’s not showing any lie difference but it is showing 50° of Loft so basically it can’t measure anything less than 15° and it’s recalibrated ready to go then we need to put one of the clubs in so we can start with the four iron so standard L four iron is 22° and the standard L is 60 . 5° and when I’m lining up here it’s really important to make sure that the grooves are lined up to the machine otherwise we’re going to get a different line angle so we get that nice and tightly in there because we’re going to bend this club in a minute first thing we need to do is measure the current Loft and lie so the current lie is 60.6 loft is perfect at 22° so we’re going to write that down so our player wants 1° extra Loft and 1° flatter so we need to bend this club so that it can match our player requirements and we can do both of those together if we’re bending down then that flattens the LIE bending up that makes it more upright we want flat air so we’re going to bend it down we want a little bit more Loft so the angle is going to be more this way so that we’re adding Loft as well if I push the club back this way that reduces we want ad Loft right we need a bending bar for that here we go nice meaty piece of equipment let’s take that out of the bracket there got a brass head here but uh just so we don’t Mark the club just put a little bit of masking tape on there as well and as I said we’re going to flatten so I just slide it over the shaft there and the huzzle tighten it up get in nice and low close to the heads so we don’t actually make any marks in the huzzle and we’re going to bend down and forward so that we can change both the lie and The Loft at the same time it takes a little bit of practice these are pretty soft so we got to be very careful that should do it and then we remeasure and there you see we have the L angle at 59 1/2 which is 1° flat and the loft is 23° which is 1° more than standard we don’t always get it on the first go it definitely takes some adjustment and sometimes we overdo it sometimes we got to do a little bit extra let’s get on to the next Club always worth checking to make sure it looks good over the ball now that’s interesting we’ve got the same L angle that the four iron had these clubs are very soft so they’re not always going to be dead on standard they can move around a little bit hit a tree route or something like that these clubs can very easily Bend so it’s worth keeping an eye on the Lofts and lies of your forage clubs different with cast they’re much firmer and they’re not likely to move around too much and actually we can’t bend Kash clubs too much at all the forge clubs we’ve definitely got some versatility there but we’ve got to keep an eye on them uh so we’re looking at 25.4 and 6 60.5 so write those down so we just got to bend this one a little bit about half a degre so we want half a degree more Loft and half a degree flatter so same direction as before we have to be pretty delicate with this one so flatter is down more loft is this way moving the shaft forward a little bit nice and tight and not going to put too much pressure on this one and we don’t want to keep moving the club around until it is perfect because the more you bend the clubs the uh more stress we’re putting on the metal so just another soft touch like that again we have 60.1 So within 0.1 for our intended L angle and we’re three away of the Loft so that’s pretty good so now I’ve got the six on in there it’s very close to standard 61.3 de lie 28.2 de Loft so it’s only 2.3 out so we’re just going to make our normal Bender flatter and more Loft so we need to move this about 7° so little bit easier than the last one.5 is tough to bend it’s just so small that feel pretty good solidly in there so we’re after 60.5 with the lie was 60.8 SO3 too bad and we’re after a 29° of Loft we’re only at 28.6 point4 it’s a bit too far out so we definitely want to move a little bit more little bit more Loft a little bit flatter going to adjust the angle here that I bend down on the huzzle just [Music] fractionally we got to be again very careful we’re only moving this 4 and3 so nice and soft may have overdone that a fraction let’s see after to 29° 60.5 not bad so I’ve got 60.5 on the last spot on very happy with that all right last one pitching wedge got to be a little bit more mindful when you get into more Loft pitching wedge right but when you get into sand wedge and lob wedge it’s not not all about what the numbers say you player wants to be comfortable over the ball and and it’s got to look right it’s easier with the irons but with the wedges there’s a little bit more feel to it so I’d obviously get the plays opinion on on how the wedges look and make sure they’re happy right let’s see what our pitching wedges at but so 631 and 45° we only want to flatten it a little bit hang on we need 625 on the LIE so I only want to flatten at 6° but we want to add a degree of loft there so I’m going to adjust that angle more around this way so I won’t be pulling down that way so much but I definitely want to add a little bit of Loft that was soft that was very soft may have done that a little bit let’s have a look it’s pretty good happy with that 40 just under 47° of Loft and 627 with the lie within our two and we’re done there you go how to adjust the Loft and Li angle of your soft forged golf clubs now loft is pretty simple if you’re hitting it too high then you can adjust it down a little bit hitting it too low you can add a couple of degrees maybe 3° maximum depending on how soft your clubs are Li angles a little bit more complicated so if you’d like to find out how to find the ideal Li angle for you watch this video next and some good information on L angle there for you thanks so much for watching until next time are you the best golfer you can be

  1. Very interesting and thanks Glen. On a completely different note (sorry). I’ve recently purchased a new Ping G430 and the mass retailer put me into a stiff 60 gram shaft. I can’t hit the darned thing & they won’t make any amends on their end. I’m a senior player…only 145 lbs and swing in the 85 mph swing speed. Been reading a lot lately and believe that I should be in a senior shaft,,.maybe 45 grams, I don’t have the faintest idea how to try or purchase with the hundreds of “senior” flex shafts….torque…high, mid or low kick points🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️.
    Any good suggestions🤷‍♂️
    Thank you!

  2. Hey Glen and Steve,
It's a really fantastic, interesting video. Always wanted to know how its done.
    Cheers
