Matt Wallace: Going into ‘good stretch’ at CJ Cup Byron Nelson | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome tour golf ball from Callaway welcome into our golf Central Studios I am Matt Adams at the CJ cup Byron Nelson today Jordan spe authored a three underpar score here’s a look at his scorecard which you can see included a dropped shot how did he feel about his three underpar start he spoke to the media about the same uh yeah just started really nicely and then stalled um you know I I snuck one on four but I thought I’d maybe grab one on three and then five five in you know to play one over five in is kind of a bummer you’re looking to to play those holes a couple under so um yeah I it’s a very getable Golf Course um was obviously very wet but um I just played the easy holes poorly played the par fives one over that was kind of the story of the day I mean par fives you kind of need to be two and a half under out here um each day and so I’m going to have to try to make that back up was there a particular shot or moment that was a highlight in the round for you uh first first hole second shot I I hit a nice wedge in there that almost went in and and tapped in so um yeah I I didn’t uh I didn’t feel like I did anything great um one I didn’t do it the only thing I didn’t do really well was was stroke it very well so I’m going to spend some time after the round putting questions go ahe you feel like you’re pretty well positioned even though you didn’t go real low I mean you’ve had experience out here kind of trying to fight back from a little bit lower how do you feel like where you’re positioned um uh not ideal I wouldn’t ass signed for 300 to start the day so um in that sense you know I knew I’d get lapped and we’ll continue to this afternoon so I imagine I’ll be somewhere in 30th um so I’m not out of it but certainly um you want to you want to stay within two or three of the lead as you get through the first couple rounds um doesn’t look like we’re going to get a ton of wind or anything so I’m going to have to really make it up because there’s just going to be a lot of guys shooting low scores I got you uh you know you’re one of this is one of two you know PGA tournaments that are back home what is it like you know seeing the gallery follow you around and and you know supports you the way they yeah it was great I mean it you know there was a few people here early and then it started to build um as we made the turn and and it was pretty cool and I’m sure you know it’ll be pretty fun tomorrow um just being later in the day on a Friday so um yeah it was it was actually kind of quite calm this morning and and then um started to build up and uh you know it’s it looked like the Byron Nelson so I appreciate it having family and friends and and other people you know from in town out there thanks defending Champion Jason day he had a day today a 5 under 66 for him and imagine that that score still included two Bogies on his card what was his mindset when he finished Rex hogard caught off thank you very much joined by Jason day the defending Champion here at the CJ cup now you talked yesterday about wanting to see improved iron play your top 20 Strokes gain approach is that the kind of progress you wanted to see this week definitely um especially with how the short game was I mean the one thing that let me down was a short game today but uh you know overall it’s been nice to be able to um improve the irons I’m going to actually work on it uh try and just keep slowly incrementally working the stuff that I’m working on right now with Chris into the swing and then hopefully over time it just sets in and it’s more concrete think you talked about this yesterday with Chris being here locally does it help out this week that he can come out you guys can maybe spend a little extra time working I’m still on the fence about whether having my coach at events to work because typically I don’t have any self-control I’m sure there’s a lot of degenerates out there as well that don’t have selfcontrol when they’re working on their swings and I have zero self-control and I I I tend to look at too much uh swings on my on my phone uh I get too technical um so I think I have a mixture of like Chris working on some stuff with me during the weeks and then some weeks um I don’t and I haven’t found the right formula yet but I feel like I’ve got off to a good start this week okay not going to ask ask about the swing anymore I am going to ask about the golf course though you won here last year off to a fast start today what is it about this course you like um if you if you make if you give yourself the correct opportunities off certain holes you can get um momentum rolling your way very quickly um you know there’s there is definitely certain holes that you want to try and attack and there’s definitely some holes that you’re like okay I just need to get it down the Fairway and I need to get on the green I just hoot and make my path um and then those if you’re walking off with bogey there that’s typically uh momentum Killers um and everyone talks about it all the time but like it’s one of those courses where you like you can go around and look at the the the holes and go okay I’m going to bu this going to bu this going to bu this got to P this going to bir this so like if you can kind of take those opportunities um and I feel like my game suits pretty nice around this course um that’s kind of how I play this course opening 66 that’s just two shots off your p last year how much confidence does that give you it’s nice I mean I I think overall the average winning score is 22 under around here so you kind of have to shoot five to six um a day somewhere in that region um so it’s a good uh kind of on par right now which is good so I got three more days left time thanks cheers Matt Wallace really had it working today 31 and 32 for his respective nines to finish on eight under after a 63 the Englishman explained in the media how he did it did you feel around like this coming yes yeah I I toon and I played some really good golf last week we didn’t have a great last day um but I hit some shots last week on those par threes at in New Orleans that you just can’t miss and I made a bunch of twos on the par threes last week and hit some great iron shots I’ve just needed to sort out the drive really a little bit because haven’t been in play as much as possible as I’ve wanted really and um yeah I I knew something like this was coming and I know I’m building into a good stretch how do you feel about your season up to now terrible I’ve played poor um but I’m old enough now to know that it’s a long season and there’s so much golf to be to be played I haven’t played how I’ve wanted to but my main focus from how I didn’t start the season was coming up to September when the rider Cup points start for me so give myself a little bit more time play well until then and then we hit the ground running from then all right another story that is prominent this week Chris Kim yeah the amateur he’s 16 years old there on a sponsor’s exemption and what does he do he opens with a three under 680 capped it with an eagle on his final hole how did he do it the media asked him the same we’ll just start off with some comments on what it was like to make your PGA Tour debut today yeah okay um I thought it was pretty fun today uh made a lot of birdies but couple Bogies in there as well but I think overall I played really well walk over talk about that finish on uh your final hole yeah it was pretty funny I mean had the perfect Club perfect number like 30 yards I think um yeah perfect what were nerves like on the first te uh they were pretty high to be honest but yeah helped that I got a good drive away and then pretty good second shot in as well there anything you do to settle those nerves or when did you kind of settle in the round uh just make jokes with the caddy to be honest I think that helps quite a bit you tell the jokes or he does uh usually him here’s what we have in store for you 1:00 a.m. eastern time coverage of the Volvo China open co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour this year the ins sparity Invitational from 12:30
