Rory Mcilroy and Shane Lowry just won in a playoff at the Zurich Classic. Both of these guys hit a ton of fairways. In this video, instructor Chris Tyler will show you the key move in the downswing that helps them hit their fairway woods with ease.

ladies and gentlemen boys and girls welcome back to my golf D today we are inside the lab because we’re going to be doing some analysis on this past weekend’s Champions Shane Lowry and Roy Mur who pulled out a victory in overtime so congratulations to them and if you’re one of those players that struggles with your Fairway Woods or your hybrids you have a hard time hitting down on the golf ball like you’re supposed to then pay close attention because we’re going to be focusing in on two key moves that these players do so well that makes them Fairway finding machines week in and week out I think you should probably take a little bit of your time to go look at their stats to know exactly what I’m talking about because if you look at their total driving percentages it’s pretty good and on top of that a lot of you at home that struggle with those nasty thin shots or top shots that drive you crazy well guess what we’re going to come out with a video later on in the week that’s going to help you feel and see the stuff that we’re going to talk about here today so hopefully you guys are ready to take that ride let’s go ahead and strap on your seat belts head inside now and take a look at these golf swings the main reason why so many amateur golfers struggle with their longer clubs their Fairway Woods their hybrids is because we find find that so many of you try to help the golf ball in the air with your upper body your spine tilts back your hands and your arms try to help Force the golf ball in the air now one of the big misconceptions when it comes to swinging the golf club is that we need to be able to hit up on it right we need to be able to get that ball up in the air and we’re going to do it with our body every single Golf Club in your bag is designed to be able to hit down on it yes we do understand that your driver is the one circumstance where we’re trying to create really positive angle attack in order to be able to utilize the modern day technology that we have High launch very low ball spin conditions but what you want to remember is that every other club in your golf bag is set up to be able to hit down on now when you say that word hit down on it that doesn’t mean that you need to take these big massive divots I get these comments all the time in the videos like where’s the divot when you compress the golf ball you don’t need to take a big divot in order to compress the golf ball you need to be able to hit down on it and if you balance the angle of attack and you have the proper steepening and shallowing moves inside of your release pattern then you can have stability in the club face and you can have a whole lot of compression day in and day out so what we’re going to do here is we’re going to be focusing in on the key move that both players make from the top of their golf swing down but I want to mention to you that these players are hitting two very different shots off of the same t-box at RBC just a couple weeks ago when you look at Shane on the right hand side of the screen you’re going to see that Shane is set up with a very narrow base and the ball position pretty far forward now understanding that modern-day ball flight laws tell us that path is responsible for curvature what you’ll understand here is that the more forward the ball position is the more to the left the path is going to be so we can tell you that there’s a pretty good chance that the way Shane swings the golf club that he’s going to be trying to hit a little bit of a hard cut here where Rory on the other hand still has a very much a narrow base like the same base that you would see him hitting a stock eight iron in with the ball position a little bit further back just a fraction further forward than the lead ear position but we know that Rory tends to hit more of a high draw both players regardless of the shot that they’re trying to produce are going to have very good lowo control control in their golf swing based off of the first move that they make in transition so what we’re going to do is we’re going to focus on Rory here first and what I like to do is I like to get him up to the top of the golf swing and I’m going to draw a line up from the center of the ankle on the lead side straight up I want you to look at this gap between the outer portion of the back and where the lead hip is and I want you to watch in transition how much the body moves when the lead arm is now parallel to the ground so you can see there’s a substantial amount of real estate being covered there now this particular position is where a lot of amateur golfers tend to struggle we see their shoulders unwind too quickly their Trail shoulder drops down um you’ll see a lot of space between the lead shoulder in this line if you can get yourself shifted properly into what we call the unload line here at my golf D then you’re setting yourself up for the rest of the release to be able to come together and Shane does this exact same movement from a much more narrow stance so you’re going to see is he loads into his Trail side and this is where he’s going to start making his move onto his lead side so if I draw that same line up from the center of the ankle straight up and down notice how his outer portion of his back is fully pushed up against this line his right shoulder up his left shoulder’s Down lead arm is parallel to the ground now what you’re going to find with Shane as he starts to finish off the job is that you got to understand that the golf swing is a very big series of steepening and shallowing moves and what you’re going to find is is that because he’s hitting a cut here is that his pelvis is going to continue to slide in the direction of the target just a little bit that little bit of slide from the pelvis is going to force a a little bit more secondary tilt which shallows it out just enough for him because he’s going to be taking in lag and his angle a little bit longer so that lag and that angle that he’s taking in is considered a steepening move now if you look at it because he’s now releasing the golf club you can see that his wrists and his forearms have rotated over the top of one another just outside of his lead thigh here so he’s still releasing the golf club It’s Just Happening a little bit later looking at Rory what you’re going to notice is is that after he makes that first move in transition because he’s going to be releasing it a little bit earlier he doesn’t get his pelvis slid out past neutral and you can see that his hands and his arms have rotated over the top of one another just a fraction sooner of than chains both players are releasing the club one player is hitting a high draw one player is hitting a high cut Shane high cut Rory High draw both players did not take a divot here but both players are hitting down on it we’re going to help you find that perfect balance with your Fairway woods and your hybrids later on in the week I think it’s important that you understand that that first move and transition is what sets you up to be able to do so if you get that first move and transition in the right spot then the whole rest of your downswing becomes a whole lot easier for us to manage as long as you have the ability to trust that you can release the golf club and not worry about looking up and seeing the golf ball fly in four different directions we’ll see you guys in the next video if you like today’s video leave us a like if you have any questions or comments please feel free to post it up below and we’ll help you as best we possibly can
