2024 Brendan
[Music]
steel Brandon how good does it feel to
be sitting up here right now yeah I mean
this is really surreal I was I was
telling you on the the ride over I’m
pretty overwhelmed but um to to win this
event is really special and um I can’t
say enough good things about the fans
and the golf course and the whole
experience this week and how important
was it this week to have teammates
around you have the High Flyers there to
I know you said Phil gave you some
advice yesterday day like how important
was that to the win yeah I mean I I lean
on Phil pretty hard with everything with
you know how to hit shots around the
green with how to approach things I mean
he’s one of the best players ever and he
can give me advice um if he’s going to
give me advice I’m GNA take it you know
so I I definitely want to listen to him
and and he’s helped me a ton with
everything from wedge play short game
mental game um just instilling
confidence in myself and um a big reason
why I’m sitting up here there was a lot
of action on the golf course today you
were able to hold the lead but there was
a couple times where John almost caught
you others caugh almost caught you were
you paying attention to the leaderboard
at all or were you just focusing on your
game yeah I was paying attention I
always do um I had a bad experience not
paying attention when I was younger
thinking that I had a chance to win and
I didn’t and and kind of made some
mistakes uh with that so I definitely
pay attention I want to know what kind
of strategy we need to do like on on 17
for instance like I can hit driver off
that tea if we need a birdie but I don’t
want to so um so I didn’t um but I
definitely wanted to know where I was
the High Flyers also are making a run at
the podium as well were you keeping an
eye on that also yes definitely I saw
Andy got off to a really hot start so
that that was great um he had an awesome
week and I’m I’m so proud of him and we
all know how good he is and it’s nice to
to for him to show it this week that was
really great so that moment when when
you’re walking down 18 and the fans are
all behind you and it’s you know like a
scene from you know one of the world’s
biggest golf events what did that feel
like yeah it that was pretty wild I
mean I was terrified over that wed shot
to be honest because it’s like I it’s a
really tough shot I need to get it over
the tier but not go into the back bunker
and um you know I’ve got I don’t know
10,000 fans in the Fairway kind of right
on top of me and so um fortunately all
the work that I put in over the
offseason
uh with Phil in his backyard and um all
the help that he’s given me it really
paid off with that shot specifically so
one last thing for me just your
experience this week playing in Adelaide
and with the Australian fans yeah I mean
I can’t say enough good things about how
the fans treated me this week um I’ve
never had so much support uh which is I
think really cool um being in not my
home country you know not my home area
they they just treated me so well I
can’t say enough good things about them
that’s great congratulations I’ll kick
it over to
Mike St first of all what did Phil tell
you before the
round he he was talking to me about um
he was like how are you feeling you know
what what are you thinking and I said
well if I if I can play freely like I
did the last couple days like I feel
like I’ll have a good chance and he was
like okay that’s great he’s like let’s
reframe it you know let’s make it when I
play freely I can play freely I will
play freely like that let’s reframe it
into that and then uh you know I was
saying like and then I think it’ll be
good enough and he’s like no no no it
will be good enough you will play freely
this is what you need to do and so that
was what I was trying to do what did he
tell you afterwards you guys had a nice
hug after yeah I mean he he was just
telling me how proud he is of me and how
he knew this was coming and he thinks
it’s going to set off a lot of really
good things for me so um just for him to
have that belief in me is is really
great I mean he’s the reason that I’m
here and and the reason that I’m
improving you know at to be honest I
mean I’m 41 years old and I’m getting
better so and it’s mostly because of him
so it’s uh it’s really great and I asked
you this yesterday but obviously this is
the first trophy of any kind that the
High Flyers have been able to celebrate
how nice it is it to just kind of to get
that first one for the team yeah yeah we
wanted to get one on the board um you
know we always talk about getting all
four guys to win win individually um and
you know getting one is a start and and
getting on the podium this week is a
start for us and and it’s a good result
and we’re excited to to have a little
fun tonight and then to reset for next
week because we definitely want to have
a chance to win Singapore and just a
couple more questions the you you had
the early bogey but then you had the
streak of five straight birdies how much
did that obviously that settled down
kind of set the tone for the rest of
round yeah definitely did I mean
starting on one the first few holes are
hard out here um number three was I
think it was 253 today into the wind um
so made bogey there but that’s not a
disaster um and I knew that other guys
were kind of starting on easier holes
whether they you know have played par
fives or whatever and so I knew they
were going to sneak up on me but I knew
I had those holes coming so just had to
be a little patient right at the start
and then was able to pop off five in a
row so that was really helpful and
you’ve won twice in Napa and now you’ve
won in Australian Wine Country so what
is the secret there yeah I I think I
just enjoy myself I think this you know
probably this climate and and the golf
course and just how the feels are here
are similar to California um I know uh
my Australian friends always say that
they’re very comfortable in Southern
California and I’m very comfortable here
so uh that may have something to do with
it uh Brendan how much of your strategy
today was to keep the ball below the
hole on these very slippery far screens
yeah quite a bit um relied on my caddy
Christian quite a bit to tell me you
know with the pins where we needed to be
where we can’t be um and so we obviously
want to hit it as close as we can but we
need to do it within reason and
sometimes you have to be safe and smart
so even though the scores are low you
have to watch where you where you put
the ball because you can get in big
trouble out there and when your lead
began to shrink a bit on the back nine
couple of Birdie putts didn’t drop you
look very calm and collected were you
calm and collected I’m pretty nervous
all the time like I think that’s just my
DNA um I really I really want to play
well all the time and so um it was about
kind of overcoming that and just trying
to be as free as I could be and I I felt
great with with how I executed um even
despite being being very
nervous uh two additions of live golf
Adelaide one by to Americans um it
doesn’t seem like a golf course that
would typically suit American players
I’m wondering if you can provide any
insight into perhaps what you and Taylor
uh last year found that the um other
players couldn’t yeah that’s a that’s a
good point uh I’m not sure I know in
general we think of like Americans as
the big hitting like you know you want
the big wide golf
courses where I won in Napa twice is is
a little bit more like this it’s a
little bit more point made a point B um
have to be smart with your
strategy um in general I would say as
long as you’re driving it really well
here you can get after some stuff but as
as soon as you get off the fairways uh
you’re in trouble and the fairways
aren’t very big for the most part so
um you know I can’t really put my finger
on it but um Taylor and I maybe like
similar things and play a similar game
and and we’re
not we’re not the big
bombers um that you would Norm think of
I guess with
Americans um is is there something in it
like should we be giving you more credit
at being able to adapt um than perhaps
we do uh I I don’t know about that
um I I feel really good when I get here
I understand the shots that it requires
um I I like the strategy I like not just
getting on the tea and wailing driver on
every hole I like being you know like on
9 and 13 Even I’m hitting this like
helicopter cut driver that I’ve been
working on Just for those two holes
specifically I like coming up with that
kind of stuff I’m hitting a lot of four
irons off the te just to put myself into
position and then controlling my numbers
with you know nineiron and wedge and
things like that so I enjoy that side of
it versus just getting up on the tea and
wailing driver over and over again do
you think you won this with a particular
Department of your game or do you think
it was your mental strength as you
referenced before I think mostly just
playing more freely than I I normally do
um The Wedge play was fantastic this
week and that’s that’s all the work that
I’ve done with Phil over the last six
months really um and I was able to hit
my numbers all the time I hit a ton of
wedges really close um even like the
first day I played the par fives even
but I made eight birdies so I was
hitting hitting really good shots kind
of knew that there was something special
in it if I wasn’t playing the par fives
well and still making that many birdies
thanks Brandon best of luck next week
thank thank
you anyone
else Brandon you um were watching the
playoff in the teams event um you’re a
rather impartial Observer I just want to
get your thoughts what you made of the
Bronx cheers towards the South Africans
when things went a little haywi haywi
for them yeah I mean I thought that was
really cool the it was the first playoff
in live history is that correct team
playoff yeah um it was really fun to see
I mean there’s a lot of pressure there
with the team you want it really bad it
it definitely turned into a true home
game there um but I think it’s all in
good fun I think it was great and and
it’s a great result um to have Ripper
win in the Home
Country anyone
else perfect thank you so much Brendon
congratulations

  1. Would be good to get a wrap up of comments from all team captains after each tournament

  2. What a phenomenal tourney and final round from Steele. Missed a few short ones but was absolutely clutch down the stretch, particularly with his drives.
