so I don’t know if you’re like me but I
tend to have a lot of trouble sometimes
with the three-wood off the bearway here
I can hit my seven wood pretty good but
the three-wood really scares me so Ed’s
going to give me some tips on how we can
hit our Fairway Woods really effectively
and not be worried about using those
because it’s a big tool in our tool kit
to get it to the green absolutely and we
need the yardage I mean it’s a difficult
Club to learn to hit there’s not much
margin for err yes but with a few simple
drills that we’ll show you um what I’ve
learned over the years one simple drill
in particular will really get you on
track pretty quick with Fairway Woods
awesome most players struggle with
Fairway Woods um and frankly there’s a
reason for it probably the hardest shot
in golf I mean you the ball’s not on a
te it’s sitting on the ground it’s a
long club with not very much loft yep so
the margin for error with a fairway wood
three wood or five wood or seven wood it
it’s probably the least margin of error
that we have um for a club so so it’s
inherently difficult but if you
understand the mechanics and the
technique on how to correctly hit a
fairway would it’s not anything that
can’t be overcome yep and the modern
clubs frankly are so much more forgiving
and easier to get up in the air than the
old wooden clubs from years past so um
there’s a lot you can do um I’m going to
show you some drills um if you struggle
with these um I would suggest using a
lofted fairway wood at first like a
fivewood or a seven wood um but if
you’re a pretty good player and and you
just want to improve it one of my
favorite ways actually is to practice
driver off the ground deck yeah and so
cuz if you can hit driver off the ground
3-woods like cheating absolutely so U if
you practice with your driver it’s not a
bad idea now the main thing to
understand when we’re talking about
Fairway Woods is you have to have the
correct angle of attack if you were on a
track man that angle of attack frankly
would be zero you’re you’re trying to
bottom out brush the grass right
underneath the golf ball not hitting up
on it not hitting down on it um as you
get with more more lofted Fairway Woods
like a seven wood or even a nine wood
that’s available today you can get away
with and sometimes it’s a benefit to
have slightly a descending blow almost
like you would with an iron yep so a
couple degrees Down’s not a bad idea
with a seven wood or a nine wood okay
but with three-wood in
particular um our angle of attack needs
to be zero and then you need to learn
how to practice that before I go into
that the other thing that you have to
determine is you have to have a really
good lie to hit a three-wood off the
ground so evaluate your lie first uh
we’re down here in the flat part of the
Fairway here and so we’ve got great lies
down here with zoa grass Fairways that
are perfect already here in April but
boy if we would go up the Fairway to our
right here just a little we would start
to get an uneven lie with the ball above
our feet or or even even on a downhill
lie and uh that’ be difficult even for
an accomplished player to hit a
three-wood so I might be better off
hitting fivewood or seven wood off of
those uneven lies so really evaluate
your lie do I have a chance of hitting a
good three-wood um if the answer is yes
then we should do it because I mean one
of the things that the statistic people
like decade Golf and and all that show
you now the closer you get it to the
green the better yep and so um
especially with no really big hazards
here out of bounds or or penalty areas
um you know we should have a go with
this from from this distance would you
agree absolutely there’s really nothing
to worry about over here so one of my
favorite drills for 3-wood is to use
three T’s okay and we’ll take a couple
closeup pictures so you can see this but
the ball would be on this middle te if
there was if we were have a ball there
and we will eventually but then I like a
te behind that that’s the same height as
the one that the balls on and you can
see those are just barely above the
ground eighth of an inch or so and then
forward of those two is another tea
that’s about 6 in in front of where the
ball would be it’s just slightly higher
than the ones on the ground and there
what we’re trying to learn to do is to
clip all three teas that’s how level
this club head has to be brushing the
grass to be a good Fairway Wood player
most players that I see try to lift it
in the air and they’re on the upswing
too much they might hit the back te but
they’re over and above the others or
they’re hitting down on it so much that
they’re missing the back two and only
hitting the front one absolutely that
makes I’m guilty of that one sometimes
yes I agree and so learn to do that so
this is a drill you can do in the
backyard you can do it in the driving
range you can just set up make swings
and literally just try to clip all three
T’s so did you hear that y yep got all
three even broke the top one y that’s
right and so boy just in your backyard
swing and brush all three te’s and learn
to do that and it’ll really improve your
Fairway woods and then when you we can
put a ball there and put it on the
middle te and
literally just hit shots and try to clip
all three T’s and the ball’s just going
to get in the way
yep that’s the best way and to learn
learn to to really hit good Fairway
Woods you can do it at the range um you
can do it when even if the turf’s not
very good at the range since you’re
using te’s and um and you can do it in
the backyard with Whiffle balls yeah so
that that’s my opinion on how to
practice that so step in here Patrick
I’m I’m going to put another T here
forward and let’s just watch you um you
can take a couple practice swings here
first and then let’s try to clip all
three T’s just for a practice swing
okay pretty good it did yeah I don’t I’m
not sure if I got the first one or I
might did it okay it it bent forward do
you see well there we go yeah you’re
right
yeah good and they all come out of the
ground right good path then yeah yeah so
let’s go ahead and put a ball on that te
okay I think there’s enough of that one
left you can stick that in the ground
yep and how far about an inch or so yeah
even closer than that so that’s a couple
inches so even closer and then um okay
those that’s a red one but you can put
that in front
there yeah just stick it like there next
to it all right so good all right this
looks pretty pretty good now all right
good so all right so I’m just going to
try our whole Focus here his ball
position’s going to be off his left
shoulder it’s not quite as far forward
as driver the ball’s on the ground that
looks great okay uh we’re not going to
have near as much shoulder tilt either
like with drivers so we don’t want to
get tilted that way y um and so all
we’re going to do is get set up just
like that and he’s just going to clip
all three T’s and let the ball get in
the way so that’s his whole focus is the
tease
yep pretty good yep pretty good shot all
three T’s are broke and
gone and so that’s the way to do it so
use do this tea drill with Fairway
woods and it will really really
really improve yeah your angle of attack
with this club and then once you feel
that and how it is it’ll
prevent you from trying to lift it in
the air or hitting down on it well so
this was my seven when I usually hit
that pretty good I want to try it with
my 3w and see if I can do that cuz
that’s where I run into some trouble
great so this is a club I often struggle
with a little bit when I’m out I get a
nice shot in the Fairway and I I just
need that distance to get it there but I
don’t have the confidence with it that
I’m not going to top it so this will be
a good drill that being said too
depending on what your Club head speed
is a lot of people off the Fairway will
hit a fivewood just as far as three-wood
anyway just because it’ll get up in the
air that’s why a lot of times I’ll hit
my seven wood just cuz I know I’ll
probably hit that almost 200 whereas
this it’s who knows where it’s going to
go yeah but if you can hit seven wood
almost 200 if you really hit this one
correctly it should go 220 so I mean so
it’s worth learning to do it and that
that extra 20 yards is a big deal so so
again just worry about clipping the te
and the ball’s going to get in the way
and we’ll we’ll be in pretty good shape
I bet all
right little too much ground that time
but we’re still airborne and so I caugh
I got a little bit too much behind it on
that one you did okay let’s let’s try it
again
yep still though that was e even with
that that was a little bit better than
some of my what you would normally do
noral cuz a lot of times I’ll I’ll pull
up and I’ll top it and I I think I I
pull up too fast may I would agree and
that’s so if you’re bottoming out too
far behind the ball you’re likely going
to hit it on the upswing so so we’re
just trying to clip the te’s not the
ground just the te’s yep and that’s not
easy so you’re doing great
so got my tea bent a little bit there we
go yeah that’s that massive Club head
speed of your just bullied that tea
right out of there that’s right so again
just clip the te’s
yep there we go that’s better I know
that was smoked
yeah little fade but that had pretty
much the right distance to get to the
green I agree that was awesome that was
well hit yeah and that’s just a wind
blowing it that way we got a lot of wind
going left to right right now good shot
thanks all right
