talk about a drill that will really help
you understand exactly what you’re
trying to do when it comes to movement
particular the lower body so I’m going
to stand side on first of all to sort of
show you what you need to do I’m going
to place this alignment stick in the
bucket so it’s you know sort of about
let’s say about 30° in terms of it’s
angled right and then I’m going to place
it like so okay like here so it’s going
to go pretty much over my toe line like
this and then I’m going to put my golf
ball here as if I was going to swing in
this direction towards the wall now if
you move correctly in the back swing
position you should look something like
so and you can see the way that my left
knee doesn’t go over my ankle over my
toe line it doesn’t interfere with the
alignment stick and then therefore if I
come into the down swing and I mirror
image the same motion and again I move
my pis correctly you can see yet again
the way that my knee doesn’t go outwards
this way passing my toe line right and
the reason why I sort of reference Scot
Sheffer with this is because scottty
Sheffer obviously sort of drags his foot
and I know his foot sort of drags kind
of this way but the point that I’m
making is the reason why his foot drags
is because his pelvis moves so far left
if your pelvis moves left with that sort
of sway this is what you want by the way
because it helps you produce tilt then
your foot will get dragged in this
direction if you’re somebody who’s
putting to way too much emphasis on
rotation right so you’re moving this way
the problem is then your hands are going
to go way out your hands are going to
work way too far left and then you’re
going to hit like you’re going to
struggle to not hit really weak cuts and
then also obviously if you’re somebody
who just you know early hip extend
you’re obviously going to move in this
direction so this is why this drill
works really really well and then what
you can do is Advance this right so if
you wanted to do that you can hit some
shots with that type of exercise and
then what you can also do is is this one
because if you were to set up now with
the uh belt buckle three or um belt
loops i s the AL stick through my Bel
Loops if I sort of swing back correctly
you can see the way that I still get a
full rotation but because my leg work is
very tidy it’s not like I’m here so I’m
here and then as I start the down swing
I can just pull the left here back and I
can bring my arms down into this space
so I can hit the golf ball without
impaling myself with the alignment stick
and I’m not saying you have to hit that
fully but I just think you know I get a
lot of students that ask about drills
and exercises and I think this is a
really good one to give you the feeling
of pulling your arms down because again
big misconception I think with heavy
rotational movement this sort of way
hands going way out to try and shallow
when in reality you want to feel like
you’re pulling those arms way more down
than you currently realize so I think
both of those drills could work really
well I’ll see you soon

  1. I feel like Scotty may have read the book Four Magic Moves by Joe Dante when he was a kid and ingrained it's concepts into his swing. The book details an early wrist set, then simply swing back with the shoulders then sliding the lower body toward the target on the downswing, very simple and can be blended into a more normal looking style.
