He was actually looking at the club to see if grass was stuck to the face, which would have indicated that he didn't catch it cleanly, and that the grass between the face and the ball resulted in the ball not going as far as he had intended.

Those sprinkles can feature in key moments. I remember at my former club, around the green at hole 17, the sprinklers there knocked people off the top spot more times than they should have done.
