On this edition of FIVE FOOTER FRIDAYS, we’re taking a close look at the CLEVELAND GOLF FRONTLINE ELITE 1.0 PUTTER with Casey Shultz, Senior Product Manager.

With the most traditional shape in the Frontline Elite lineup, 1.0 features a classic blade design paired with a plumber’s neck hosel, best suited for a slight arc stroke.

With a one-of-a-kind Tungsten SOFT face, model-specific sole/counterbalance weighting, and our 2135 Technology, everything about Frontline Elite is designed to help you hit straighter putts with consistent distance and incredible feel.

And as always, the video doesn’t end until host Bill Hobson makes 5 in a row from 5 feet.

it’s time for another installment of our
five-footer Friday series welcome inside
the mgl Sim Studio Bill Hobson here as
we focus on all things related to
putting we want you to save some Strokes
we want you to to be able to put in your
hands the latest Innovations the newest
stuff that’s out there and I’m really
excited today to introduce you to the
latest and greatest from our friends at
Cleveland Golf Casey Schultz joins us
he’s a SE senior product manager and
Casey how are you I’m doing great how
about you Bill I’m doing well it’s good
to see you and um when did you kind of
first dip your toes into the world of
golf equipment and for our purposes of
our discussion into the world of Putters
sure yeah I mean I’ve been working for
Cleveland Golf and Srixon and the whole
company for about six years now um I
have a background in um kind of
marketing and development um in the past
and worked at a golf course growing up
and I’ve always been really passionate
about Putters and you know basically all
golf clubs and um through over the years
we’ve made better and better lines um
more and more technology our R&D team
has really come up with some really
unique and Innovative um additions to
each line and um I think Frontline Elite
is really a culmination of all of those
technologies that we’ve developed over
the years all packaged into one really
premium putter well we love seeing how
all that technology comes together to
help us putt better because all of us
need that help I was looking at some
tour statistics from 5 to 10 feet and
there’s a reason reason those men and
women are making giant paychecks P
they’re so good at it absolutely I
started thinking through my
percentages and that’s a reason you and
I are talking about putting instead of
me putting on a putting clinic right so
sure take us inside the technology of
the Frontline Elite lineup from
Cleveland and we’ll start with a
beautiful looking blade I I think it
officially goes by the title of the 1.0
correct yeah so the 1.0 is a good kind
of combination of a more classic styling
with a whole bunch of Technology packed
into it um with Frontline Elite we’ve
really focused on off-center strikes and
getting as much performance as you can
um when those you know especially as a
more recreational golfer strikes don’t
always hit the center of the face right
you’re going to be getting a little bit
lack of consistency with a traditional
putter when that happens um so what
Frontline Elite really takes into
account is two key Technologies um over
multiple Generations at Cleveland Golf
we’ve had our speed optimized face
technology um is something we’ve been
doing for a while that actually has a
different pattern on every single model
of putter um that is based on thei and
the CG properties of that putter
specifically so what speed optimized
face technology or soft does is
basically anywhere you strike on the
face your putts going to go the same
distance so you can see that Milling
pattern in the center there is a lot
more um detailed and close together and
it spreads out a little bit towards the
heel and the toe so for players who are
trying to get better at their lag
putting and have overall more
consistently um striking those putts
you’re you’re going to get the ball to
the hole a lot more often with speed
optimized face technology than you are
with um just a more traditional Mill um
face that’s more you know the same
pattern all the way across right and I
know that the data backs this up but
there’s still a bit of a learning curve
among amateur golfers to convince us
that we don’t hit putts in the center as
much as we think we do right you can see
it in your in your high-speed cameras
you can see it but it’s hard with a
naked eye to realize you know I just hit
that putt you know a full a half a ball
off center yeah I wonder why I keep
missing so uh where are we in in reality
versus where we are in perception as
amateur golfers yeah I think amateur
golfers miss the center of the face a
lot more often than they realize um this
is a technology competitors are starting
to understand and get like oh wow this
is um something Cleveland’s been doing
for so long let’s try to hop on that
bandwagon um it’s something we’ve done
really well and you know over the years
have kind of iterated and fine-tuned our
pattern to make sure that we’re as
successful as possible in the areas
where we see in our data that um players
are striking the ball most often you
know that one inch area on the heel or
toe of the putter is really where the um
speed opiz space technology plays the
most of an effect and you know that
insert all the way across the face um
larger than some other ones out there um
is really helpful there and um in the
areas that a player is going to be
striking it really helps um make sure
that that speed consistency is is is
something they’re going to be achieving
and you’re going to have lag putts that
are a lot closer as well as M hits on
the heel and toe that are going to get
to the hole that may have been left
short otherwise we have some weights
underneath yeah yeah good weighting as
well um so that’s going to come with our
consistent swing feel so our overall
design of the putter um every single
length you’re going to be getting a
different weight as well as a
counterbalanced weight in the grip um so
essentially in the past all Putters have
been designed for one length normally
that’s 34 in or 35 in Engineers will do
all the testing based on that length and
um any other spec that you want to
purchase say oh I’m a 33 inch guy um you
know or even longer a 36 inch you’re
going to get a putter that’s designed
only for that other spec and then the
swing weight and overall weight of the
putter will just fall out where it does
for that length with this putter yeah I
I know that for Putters so much of it is
the in the eye of the beholder approach
so that for some they love a blade they
love the offset for others they like a
mallet like we’ll talk about next week
is there any Rhyme or Reason To What
golfers will choose can you tell when
somebody’s walking up that’s going to be
a mallet kind of guy or or is it really
just a guessing game until you get
fitted for the right putter yeah I mean
I think a lot of it’s down to personal
preference so whatever shape you really
prefer um a blade or a mallet a little
bit of a heavier weighted putter a
little bit of a lighter can um play into
that effect as well um I think there’s a
lot of preference there but there’s also
um tow hang and what your overall stroke
type is like so we really try to split
our shapes between slight Arc or
straight stroke um so a player who’s got
more of a straight back straight through
or is trying to achieve as straight of a
stroke as possible we’ll likely want to
play a face balanced model so we’ve got
a few face balanc mallets um face
balance blade in the mix as well um or
somebody who’s looking to create a
little bit more of an arc with their
stroke or have something that goes more
with a naturally flowing arcing stroke
um we’ve got things like the one you’re
holding right now is a great um arcing
stroke design with a little bit of a
smaller grip that’s going to sort of
help facilitate that tow hang presence
it’s fascinating technology to see all
the thought that goes into the various
models this of course called the
Frontline Elite from Cleveland Golf and
I know you and I were talking just
briefly before we started to record our
conversation about the world of Premium
Putters and how they’re starting to
approach the prices of drivers and I
know you’re trying to help with that a
bit yeah absolutely so these are now
being sold at $199.99 and and upgade at
$249.99 with the um us all-in shaft
which is a great shaft upgrade it’s a
premium multimaterial shaft um but for
the price point you’re getting a amazing
product with Technologies about I mean
I’ve only checked on a few the fa is
actually tungsten this time around which
is um really something that combines
with that speed optimized face
technology um to ensure that you’re
going to get a reduction of twisting at
a dress moves that center of gravity
forward and the combination of that
along with that speed optimized space
technology will sure that not only are
those off-center strikes going to go
straighter but they’re going to go the
same speed so competitors have kind of
copied one or the other of these
Technologies over the C last couple
Generations but nobody’s put it together
into a putter um where you’re really
getting that um reduction of off-center
direction and off-center speed
lossi on itself will get you one um
moving the weight forward will get you
the other but if you don’t put both a
speed technology and an accuracy
technology into the face of a putter um
you’re going to have some sort of
tradeoff and we believe we have the only
putter in the market that um kind of
makes both of those at a really
affordable price point at that 199 price
well Casey every one of our five-footer
Friday features ends with me making five
in a row from five feet so I’m going to
go and do that you and I will reconnect
