good day mate welcome to hang time this
week we’re here in Australia and who
better to have that the newest edition
of Ripper GC Lucas herbet let’s go see
what he’s all
about Good day Mike how’s it going I’m
good how are you I’m good how was that
how was that by the way is that good
I’ll tell you what it’s possible it’s
possible it’s possible it’s hard to do
an Australian accent if you’re not from
Australia I think but uh I’ll I’ll pay
that no that’s pretty good right yeah
all right catting for me this I I am
catting I know pey just put more bottles
of water in here so I’m in trouble we’ve
got our lucky Rock in there as well so
it should be nothing a lot for you I’m
just kidding all right let’s
go well Lucas I haven’t had the chance
to say this to you but welcome to the
family the live family we love having
you here it’s been so much fun watching
you you know in the first few events of
the season this time last year you were
in Japan where you won while living
adate was happening I know you told me
on the Range earlier that this was sort
of the turning point for you when you
saw the impact of this event in Adela
last year can you expand a little bit
yeah I think it was a bit of a turning
point for for live in general as well as
you know I probably I didn’t think I was
going to be playing live I didn’t I
didn’t think you know that call was
going to come for me for the Rippers
team so um I don’t know that at the time
I necessarily thought it was a turning
point but looking back on it now and in
the decisions that I needed to make to
um to you know come to this uh this live
tour um you know live outad was kind of
crucial in that in that decision um you
know I felt like the Ripper team had a
really good opportunity to make a big
positive impact on golf in Australia and
obviously this event you know is a big
part of that so I felt like well if I’ve
got the chance to play this uh you know
even if it’s once a once a year um it’s
going to make a really big impact yeah I
mean certainly watching last year and
and this year the crowd’s going to be
even bigger than it was last year so are
you pretty excited about that I’m not
sure whether it’d be scared to be
nervous or excited but um it should be a
lot of fun I was going to say does that
work to your advantage as a player when
you have the crowd behind you or does
that add perhaps more pressure on
yourself to perform I think it just
makes the whole experience a lot more
fun I think there is a little bit of
added pressure that you know people want
to people want to come and watch you
play well so yeah you do have to keep
yourself in check and make sure you’re
not trying too hard but you know it’s we
play overseas so much throughout the
year we don’t sort of don’t get any
local home support so it’s very nice to
get it for one week of the year yeah oh
well I’m pretty sure the home crowd’s
going to be behind your team for sure uh
last year I don’t know if you saw but
cam did a shoy with fiser uh he’s
playing on Saturday are you going to
expect a little shoy from you too or I’m
going to be honest I bought a brand new
pair of shoes the other night in
anticipation we do have to do any shoes
cuz uh you do what now oh it’s a little
early in the morning for a chewy
now what are we are we doing are we
doing a hard Fizz or are we doing a
Gatorade oh no we’re do it a purple one
if we ever did it we’ll do a prople one
are we going to get you up on stage
doing one if if all of us oh hell yeah
I’ll do it yes you’ll join in yes camera
is my witness we’ll do it I’ll do it I
brought a spare pair of shoes too just
FY all so we’re all prepared we’re all
prepared now I read an article about you
uh help being an AFL player Aussie rolls
player what’s his name Aaron how do you
say his last name n n yeah now it you’re
quite the football coach it turns
out apparently you did all the stats and
you helped him and he scored six goals
what was that all that yeah I think uh I
think I got a lot of a lot of Praise
that maybe I didn’t deserve uh for that
one my team the Western Bulldogs um down
in Melbourne we I I have some mutual
connections there
um you know they wanted me to kind of
just chat to the guys briefly about you
know the idea was kind of around like
before you’re hitting a part or even a
shot just the thought process and the
routine that goes into into that whether
that was transferable across to to
taking you know for for people outside
of Australia like it’s it’s more similar
to a free kick in in soccer or football
or whatever term you want to use for
that more it’s more similar to a free
kick rather than a you know a goal just
in general play so yeah I I went down to
the club I had a couple of conversations
I wouldn’t say I did a hell of a lot
there was there was some guys there that
did a hell of a lot more than me in in
help but yeah the the boys came out a
couple days later and and kicked very
straight so I don’t I think you deserve
a lot more credit than you’re giving
yourself because I don’t think that
happened very coincidentally and uh you
know they spoke very highly of you in
that article in fact and they talked a
lot about your putting and how good of a
putter you are something I also found
out about you is your love for music
specifically you collect guitars you
like guitars do you play I mean uh when
I say I collect guitars I just end up
buying more than I really need um I
wouldn’t say I wouldn’t say I’m
collecting any rare pieces I just end up
with a lot of guitars so I I double I’m
definitely not a professional I won’t be
playing in front of any audience anytime
soon we’ll make that happen I do I do
enjoy when I am home um plugging the
guitar in and trying to play some stuff
and I would say with my game with my
golf game I’m quite artistic so I feel
like the music side of things it just
helps feed into that a little bit and
just you know take your mind off golf
still in a productive way what songs can
you play oh what have I got um what’s in
your repertoire I can do a decent uh I
can do a decent rendition of Georgia by
Vance Joy I don’t know whether you know
that song um very good Vance Joy is
great yeah I love Vance Joy I love
listening to music probably more than I
enjoy listening myself play it these
guys are these guys are so talented so I
don’t yeah I don’t profess to have a lot
of talents there but I enjoy dabbling
around and and um and playing what’s the
what’s the most famous or the nicest
guitar that you own of you’ve recently
bought for yourself um I bought I think
I was at the US Open last year I went to
a shop called Norman’s rare guitars in
la I love every time I’m in La I I try
and make the trip up there I love going
there and I bought a offender
Stratocaster that is a replica of Eddie
Van Halen’s guitar back in the day so
it’s um it’s kind of like he when he got
his guitar originally Eddie Van Halen
obviously lead um guitarist for Van
Halen yeah when he first got it he
didn’t have any money to buy like a full
guitar so he would buy the headstock and
then the neck and everything like all
separate and he put it together himself
and then he cut out um he cut out the
holes for the the pickups strung the
guitar himself and had everything kind
of basically did his own custom guitar
for right and then I think he wrapped it
in like electrical tape to give it some
character basically rather than a paint
job so it’s just it’s like basically a
replica of that um oh that’s G to be
pretty cool it’s really really cool like
if you play anything that’s kind of down
a a Van Halen um sort of sound you can
make it sound really really good so I
love that thing I love play it oh I need
to I need to look at that I need to you
need to take a picture and show it yeah
for sure all right let’s go check out
your show picture a picture not a video
of me playing it we could do both right
I mean come on Lucas we got a couple of
couple of points you’ll be able to do it
uh I mean so if we get to this shot here
this is just classic team Herby golf
life outside the ropes the fairways a
lovely piece of grass to walk on for us
to get to our ball in the in the
scrub what have we got here secondary
caddy Nick got 16 Front 31 hole who has
better hair pey or me a I mean this hair
I’m talking about this hair that
one we’ll put up a pole po absolutely FR
31 hole right so we’ve got we’re on an
up slope here in the rough little wet
little wet rough here in the morning I’m
I’m going to say it’s going to be a 50
uh we got some trees in front of us here
we should get over them pretty easy tell
Pew to go away I don’t need them yeah
well yardages are overrated PE can you
do commentary this week I think I’ve got
I think I got a much better cad actually
PE might be highly entertaining on our
commentary I tell you what he’s you
marked up on Friday aren’t you this
could it could be entertaining anyway oh
that’s brilliant all right well wind’s
off helping and feels like it’s a
fraction helping it yeah y 131 I’m going
to try and land this what do you think
like 127 just a little short ride of the
hole y don’t want be long yeah I don’t
think it’s going to bounce and spin much
I don’t think it’s going to spin much
out of this out of this Li so I think
yeah we’re overthinking this let’s hit
it
true C pin hit pin okay wait for this
crew to get out the way when they
decided we’re out of the way is yeah
don’t kill any of my guys
oh tell you what maybe go it go yeah
short right we’ll take that yeah we’ll
take that what am about what do you
think Dom I am PE PE go grab a
microphone buddy go I’ll clean his close
oh you’ve already made a mistake we got
to go we got to go to the wet end e
that’s that’s the that’s the end we need
for the keeping the hands dry oh why is
oh I hope that’s
water I don’t want I don’t want to know
what it is if it’s not water it’s
pewy never know he could he could have
punked me by putting out something else
oh that doesn’t sound like something
he’d do no no really pey no now I’ve
been told that uh you’re not exactly
known for your
punctuality I don’t know where you would
have heard this from um what what what’s
up for that man you clearly turn up on
time when you have to tea off yeah I
think flights and flights and tea times
are about the only thing I’m I’m ever on
time for in my life and they are barely
on
time I’m not a fan of waiting so yeah
I’m I’m not known for my punctuality
although I think our joke within the
Ripper team is that uh cam often turns
up on time but probably early but
missing half the things he needs and
most of the time I’ll turn up 10 to 15
10 minutes late but I’ve got everything
we need so I’m kind of I’m kind of the
full guy that just remembers everything
that Cam’s forgotten I’m sorry let’s
clarify none of them have said 10 to 15
minutes late apparently in Miami you had
a dinner that was at 6:00 and you turn
up at 7:40 I mean what on God’s green
earth were you doing for an hour and 40
minutes I was doing live media work I
you know I was busy with you guys in
front of the cameras excuse look I don’t
think I would have been that early if it
was on my own uh on my own schedu I
think I was pretty good that day oh my
goodness um now speaking of music what
do you love for music come from was it
from your parents was it from what I
mean how like for me I same as you music
is a huge part of my life and it was
always kind of I always call it my best
friend it’s something that kind of got
me through the best and the worst times
of my life what does your love where
music come from yeah I definitely think
my parents specifically my dad uh we
listen to music in the car getting up in
the morning for golf basically all the
time growing up obviously in his taste
was 60s 7s 80s rock so I got anuff I got
an education there and then I think a
lot of my friends growing up around the
golf club a lot of my friends are
probably now 40 to 45 years old they’re
all way older than me so there’s that
generation that I get educated with them
then there was obviously my own
education of turning 18 and and you know
listening to what was around at the time
so I’ve sort of had a lot of
generational different generational
influences that have allowed me to
appreciate a lot of music and then yeah
like I don’t I don’t I guess with that
love of music then you just go deep
diving and you start finding new stuff
and there’s always I’m the I’m the guy
that listens to the same playlist like a
hundred times over until you ruin it and
then you got to go to something else
like I don’t I can never just put on the
radio I have to pick something that I’m
like I’ve been listening to that song
lately and I want to listen to that
again yeah that’s awesome well you and I
have something in common and we need to
we need to and maybe check out a really
nice bar Yi and Erica in Nashville yeah
of all the places that we’re going to
this year Nashville is where we’re going
to go some good little local some local
country music I’m going to call it some
some stuff that like we’ve probably
never heard of yeah that yeah we’re
going to turn up and be like this is
pretty good I tell you what country
music is one that like I never thought I
would really like it and it’s something
that I think living in Australia we all
like H country music and oh you got
Keith Urban and well Keith’s not really
that big in Australia he’s massive in
America but then you move to America you
start driving a truck around and you’re
like you know what kind of dig this it’s
not bad it’s not bad the American
influence is rubbing on you it is all
right Lucas finally you’ve had some
great achievements in your career you’ve
won four professional wins one on the
PGA three on the DP World Tour or
European tour what’s what’s the one
thing you’re the proudest of in your
career so far well um
I’m not sure I’ve got a I’ve got a lot
of moments that I’m proud of I think if
anything Springs to mind first up um
winning the Irish open wire to wire that
was one that like winning is obviously
hard but winning wire to wire is really
really hard just going to sleep every
night on the lead and like dealing with
all you know the nerves the pressure the
adrenaline the excitement everything you
know you go to the restaurant at night
and like every waiter and every Chef in
the restaurant knows that’s the guy
that’s leading like every single night
like just dealing with that was tough
and to to then go on and win and and
finish the way I did to win like that
made me really really proud that’s
probably my fondest U memory of a win so
far um so that’s the first one that
comes to mind but there’s so much stuff
like um I’ve been obviously involved
here with the with a Challenge
Foundation you got your hand on Luke
there yeah um I’ve played a couple times
with kids who have been through leukemia
and they out the other side now and and
getting into golf and like that’s made
me proud to feel like that some
awareness for a foundation that helps
those guys has had an impact down the
road and I play golf like I don’t do
much but those things are really
changing people’s lives so I feels like
I’m actually having a real world impact
on on things and yeah yeah that I’m
pretty lucky with what I do that we we
have a few moments like that where we
yeah we do feel luck um we can be really
proud of what we do well perspective in
life doesn’t it when you have a friend
that’s gone through what he’s gone
through so thank you so much for sharing
all that Insight let’s watch you make
this birdie so that I can then be
crowned better than pewy right I mean I
mean there’s no one hole determines that
surely yeah there’s there’s no debating
it once we make this part um so we get
just one take at it or the oh yeah this
we just talked about pressure you can
handle it right are you going to read it
for me I’ll give your read yeah
absolutely I’ll go straight off your
read okay I would
go I would go right about a just over a
cup right this is depending on your
speed though if you’re hitting it more
firm maybe just about a couple of balls
right but if you’re just going to dye
this one in going have a little look
I’ll go like two and a half balls right
you did tell me just before we started
that you had The Yips of The Parting
when you finished no I had The Yips of
the driver okay driver Yips all right I
had the driver Yips the worst kind I
think all
right I don’t know I’m I think you’re
pretty I think you’re pretty close yeah
I might go even if you’re hitting it
pretty firm I would go like a ball no we
don’t do we don’t do we didn’t do too
firm I like a diece speed okay I think
you’re pretty good there cop cop just
over a cup maybe
yeah well he’s fifth in Strokes game
putting on our league so far so you
would like to think this is going to go
in
right oh you just did not hit it firm
enough on that line I thought I H a
pretty good pot okay blame it on the
caddy blame it on the caddy it’s my
fault PE you got your job back your yeah
well might as well because this bag’s
getting darn heavy that’s for sure uh
Lucas thank you so much thanks for your
time appreciate it you know I think
you’re going to win this year uh you’re
so talented and and certainly have life
in such great perspective so we
appreciate you and uh good luck this
week have fun thank you so much I hope
you’re right I hope we get a win this
year and this week would be you want to
start yes absolutely and the Aussie
crowd we’ll go love for you guys a big
Sunday night if we do yeah yeah all
right good luck thanks
