Dr Luke Benoit shares what a “freezer” is and how it’ll help you dramatically change your golf swing FAST. It’s one of the best tools to take what you’re working on in a golf lesson and get it to stick when you practice.

We also talk about Open Loop and Closed Loop feedback and how those two types of actions affect your practice.

all right I got the number one way to
make a swing change it’s a motor hack
that every teacher should use and if
you’re not give it a try Okay according
go to the top show me a freezer I want
to see where you’re at at the top so
we’re going to feel a bunch of things
we’re going to get wide and shallow now
I want you to go from here go full speed
down awesome now this next ball we’re
going to go and we’re going to go real
slow 3 second back swing one two three
go all right okay one two three go B
awesome we’re using foam balls we don’t
care where the ball goes we’re going to
make sure the video looks awesome we’re
going to alternate that pattern between
freezer and slow back swing and you’re
going to make the change so much faster
let’s define freezer you’re just talking
about we go to freezer stop exactly and
that’s the biggest innovation in
teaching and I would I would give ganas
credit obviously Butch used to work with
tiger on freezers it’s not a new idea
but it’s getting way more popular okay
all right Luke so freezers come to the
top stop and then whenever I’m working
on my swing I can do that on the down
swing or something like that right you
have some time at the top of the freezer
to think right not everybody likes that
right they think that might be bad for a
number of reasons but you are a big fan
of them yeah I think it’s a really
important kind of motor learning hack
and I think understanding like an open
loop and a closed loop process is really
key for making those changes let’s
define those for folks closed loop and
open loop Clos Loop means you’re
actually able to adjust to the
environment so driving a car down the
road is oh I see this uh truck coming at
me I’m adjusting to it okay uh open loop
would be like shooting a basket or
playing golf where typically you just
don’t have a lot of time to think by
using both sides of that open loop and
closed loop we can make changes much
faster this is the secret sauce to swing
changes got it and so we go up to the
top on a freezer and you can think about
17 things right you can actually think
how am I going to get down cover the
ball not early extend shallow it and
rotate you can do all that in a freezer
whereas real swing you can’t yep at real
speed so hard we’ve all tried to do it
but then you watch the video like that’s
the same as I just did before the whole
idea is that if your Club is from here
if you’re inside out but you’re a little
bit steep maybe you’re going to feel
some rising up or early extension you
might not feel it but you’re doing it
left arm catapults off the chest we get
this high handle and we get the the club
face flipping harder so this is Phil
mikkelson obviously as a pro you can get
it done but it’s not maybe as repeatable
as getting the club down in here wide
with the arms Club is shallow now I have
all the incentive to Road rotate through
if I’m here my club’s going to hammer
the ground so I get up and out of the
way if the club is here and I rotate
it’s a lot better really cool thing to
do is if you swing a club that’s about
20 in long will you early extend there’s
no incentive to the club is so short
it’s easy to stay down the reason people
early extend it’s non physical
limitations 98% of the time it’s a
shitty plane they’re too steep they tend
to tend to really get here they don’t
know how to shallow and get wide and
rotate around the number one hack I have
is get good at freezers and then
alternate between a freezer and a slow
back swing so that you have time to
integrate that new feel in your normal
swing got it but it’s slow enough here
that you can think and then go be
aggressive at the bottom and then at
what point you bring the third a real
swing real back swing yeah I mean you
can start speeding it up and it’ll feel
probably like you’re taking two seconds
and on video it’ll look really good
right your buddies are going to say you
have good Tempo got it yeah perfect all
right so there’s why you should use
freezers and then your scientific term
of the day Clos Loop and open loop
activities yeah

  1. Pro Sender and Hackmotion training aids incorporate freezers as part of their use protocols.

  2. The comment about "shitty plane" is so true. If you're on plane at right arm parallel on the downswing, using the legs correctly is a no brainer. The body will react perfectly just like it will is you're not on plane to early extend. The plane is the boss. Great vid!
