Learn from the inside out to simplify golf

okay uh what makes the golf swing and
golf instruction so complicated and how
could it be more simple I think there’s
a
fundamental flaw and that is you have
somebody observing you from the
outside and then the concept is how do I
get that person to fit this picture I’m
perceiving from the outside and the
problem is where you’re seeing it from
from so from the outside it looks like a
complicated series of movements and
positions that’s hard to piece together
but I’ll challenge you to do this so
observe your own swing now instead from
the inside and I can’t show you what
this looks like but I can describe it
and you can easily do it and the way to
do it is just follow it with your eyes
the whole way through so if I just stay
with visually with my swing I can
see all I’ve done is
rotated the club naturally hinges up as
my arms stall because they’ve just run
out
of
rotation and the hands come back down
and I rotate back through and the same
thing happens on the other side so the
whole
motion is really just driven by a little
shift of weight rotation shift back
rotation
through it’s not actually a very
complicated motion if you’re perceiving
it from here from your Center out it
gets very complicated when you look at
somebody from the outside and try to do
that so don’t fall into the Trap of
letting somebody else describe your
swing from the outside and then get in
your own
brain or watching videos and trying to
make sense of it from the outside in you
need to make sense of it from the inside
out so that is both a sense of its shape
which is really just to rotate this
upper body structure let it hinge rotate
your upper body structure through let it
hinge again and then to add a little bit
more power there’s just a timing element
which
is back forward and through let me show
you the timing element again this is
very critical
the critical part is to land then rotate
so if you’re moving laterally and
rotating you’re going to be sloppy so
back
forward rotate back forward rotate back
forward rotate you can see I don’t have
to do all this idea of squaring the club
face is
unnecessary because the club face is
always Square
it’s never really not Square it’s it’s
Square the whole time it’s
Square from here looking at it and
that’s what’s important it seems to open
90° and close 90° but it doesn’t doesn’t
do anything it’s exactly where it was
just goes up still exactly where it was
goes through still exactly where it
was never changes from the inside out
all I need is a little bit of shift ing
landing and let the structure do what it
does that’s a
pretty oh we didn’t get one I’ll try
again it’s a pretty simple way of
looking at the swing if you look at it
from the inside and understand a couple
forces and a basic unchanging
structure and there’s a pretty decent
one so keep it simple

  1. This was the hardest lesson for me to learn because for decades, I was turning my club and then slicing off the planet. I finally played with a guy who showed me that the club doesn't rotate at all but you turn, then lift the club, then drop, and rotate with some weight shift. My slice stopped almost immediately and now I fight a draw occasionally. BTW, the next hardest lesson was getting my grip correctly on the club with my right hand. I finally got it right using Alex Hays book, The Mechanics of Golf.
