he’s a tall man he’s got the
talent being 68 is not normal for golf
it’s definitely an adjustment there’s no
doubt about that the height runs in the
family that’s for
sure it was just amazing to see this man
growing and not
stopping you could see there’s something
happening he getting
taller I grew just more than a foot in
high
school he’s got a big
personality he’s got the length I think
he would stack up against
anybody using the god-given talents that
I’ve got playing to the best of my
ability I don’t know what my Peak holds
[Music]
yet welcome to PJ tour the
[Music]
cut my dad’s side of the family is
originally from from Germany I moved
down to South Africa a long long time
ago we’ve got a lot of interesting
history in George my grandfather he was
a Wilder n doctor and opened up the
hospital and became mayor after that
it’s a childhood I finally remember and
it was a really amazing time in my
life it’s called a BRI it’s kind of the
similar version of barbecue it’s just on
wood instead of gas a lot of who I am
was because of my parents I was brought
up the right way not kind of been taught
and ingrained that certain things are
more important than the success I have
on the golf course
[Music]
[Music]
I went one college event in my 2 and 1
half years prior to that so I feel like
I was getting close to really breaking
through at five second place finishes
that year I was playing a lot of good
golf but just kind of not getting it
done but the Stars kind of started
aligning that week the rest is history
I’ve experienced something similar
because he won the South African amateur
in Port Elizabeth he’s still the
youngest ever to have won that
tournament they are saw you know you can
grind it out
[Music]
[Music]
it was so amazing see my name and the
top of leader working down 18 it truly
was something special it was a
motivational boost to me that that hey
my good golf is is good enough to
compete against anyone in the world
leading a major I think that’s got a
partial effect to why I didn’t play that
great on
Friday that was a big lesson I learned
of how to deal with that we’ll put it a
test at Augusta but I’m an amateur
playing the Masters very few people
could say that
[Music]
I just want our son to be happy it’s not
all about winning and fame and money
it’s being happy and living your life he
mustn’t play golf to make
money must play golf because he likes it
and he loves golf enjoy Golf and ensure
that he gives back thanks boys thanks
for joining me the last two holes I
appreciate it it was
[Music]
fun play to the best of my ability and
using the god-given talents that I’ve
got reaching my Peak whether that is 14
Majors or winning one PJ Tour event I
don’t know what my Peak holds but if I
can reach the peak of my ability in 40
years from now sit down on a chair and a
porch somewhere in my little house and
say hey I’ve worked as hard as I could
have that’s true success for
[Music]
me Scotty Sheffer arrived at Augusta
National looking for his second Green
Jacket just 2 years removed from his
2022 breakout season and first Master’s
Victory 2022 kind of burst out on the
scene I got my first win and then I
started kind of winning a lot there in a
short period of
time was able to get to number one in
the
world overall I mean it was such a great
season when it comes to tournaments I
try to be as prepared as possible at the
event and so when I step up on the first
te something I always imagine is the
work that I put into to be in that
scenario he Stripes it he absolutely
Stripes it it’s just so
consistent the level he’s playing golf
at is truly tiger like he’s incredibly
consistent in the game and he has a
chance to win every time he tease it up
you kind of step away from the round and
kind of Blown Away at how easy he made
it look without thinking about it he
seems to be the guy now that we look to
as this is the guy that we need to beat
this week
we’re all trying to chase that
consistency um that’s something that
I’ve tried to chase for a number of
years I just kind of tell myself that
you’re prepared to go out and do this
and all I try and do is control what I
can control and that’s my attitude and
my approach to the shots and just being
committed and outside of that I can’t
control the results I always look back
to the work that I put in to get to that
place and when I step on the first tea
it’s just time to go out there and have
fun and compete it’s all about Scotty
sheffler now and the walk up he and Ted
have
enjoyed numerous times
[Applause]
and the sheffler Victory train just
keeps on rolling back on top of the
[Applause]
world with his second Master’s title
Scotty shuffler remains a top the
Comcast business tour top 10 for the
sixth consecutive
week Sheffer also remains at top the
FedEx Cup standings while ludvig oberg
moves into the top five with his
runnerup finish in
Augusta I can’t tell you how happy I am
to be here with you man me too dude this
makes me so happy I’ve only interviewed
this guy one other time uh we were in La
it was for Access Hollywood but you know
it was like tournament mode yeah so for
you to open up your beautiful brand new
home to have me here means the absolute
world to me and uh I’m just pumped so I
wanted to say thank you of course dude
happy to have you here do you want to
take a seat here and we’ll chat a little
bit I’d love to
[Music]
this is the comfiest interview I’ve done
this is my goal I’ve always wanted to do
interviews like this where you guys feel
comfortable and I feel comfortable and
we’re doing it which is great I want to
get back to Jill and the decor did you
guys agree on the decorations and the
furniture and stuff or different
Visions uh yeah my vision was her vision
so we we agreed you’re lying I’m not
lying I’m just
not yeah maybe I made it up a little bit
I don’t know no I I trust her opinion
I’ll just say that cuz this is a big
jump I’ve been to your last house to
this I mean your last house was kind of
like a bachelor pad and this is like I’m
a married man this is going to be like
my family home right yeah yeah I heard
that a couple times from Jill that you
know you’re not in college anymore uh
you know we don’t need all of this we
could actually make this a little bit
more of a home and yeah so that that’s
what we have now
I’m growing up what was the thing that
she made you get rid of that still
stings I don’t need to put her on blast
that’s true but probably my ALB on pull
table I’m kidding I’m kidding she didn’t
make me I but she would have preferred
it not what happened to it the people
who bought our house they for some
reason wanted it so said sure sounds
good did Coach save and buy your house
yeah that’s
right come here come here it’s
okay come here look at come here angel
get him you okay come here tell your dad
to stop being so mean to
you I’m just trying to toughen them up
all right come here
Frank it’s crazy how life changes so
fast it you know just looking back I
think we’ve been friends seven or eight
years now you are a year in change into
marriage how are we liking it so far
it’s been great it’s been great uh you
did an unbelievable job by the way uh
officiating the wedding stop it go on
you were talking last night what the
most nervous you’ve been I’ve never
married anybody in my life before and I
said it was the most nervous I’ve ever
been since I had to do the live red
carpet of the Emmys you asked me to
marry you and like no one’s ever asked
me to do that and I didn’t want to let
you guys down but I it’s new territory
for me so I was petrified yeah nerves
were just insane I don’t remember
anything it was just you know you’ve
been up there you just you completely
black out of what happens if you’re up
there 10 minutes or an hour it’s just
you’re in such a la la land in days that
you just don’t even remember
it look at
that all right so the game is what so
sometimes Jordan and I when we’re
throwing ball I mean this is you know
crazy on the PGA tour obviously okay see
how far you can throw a ball
opposite handed but also you don’t step
with the correct foot opposite hand
opposite foot so I mean it’s but it’s
not a reaction thing you know it’s like
okay
yeah you know and I’m if it looked half
as cool as it felt like it looked it’s
got to be good right so I mean you’re an
athlete opposite
yep oh
wow that was it look like a shot putut
why is it when you throw opposite-handed
like you can’t go back it’s just like a
why is it so vulnerable I don’t know but
I’m going to give it another try yeah
give it another try I don’t leave
anything back though just quick
just that was kind of nice there’s
something about what you’re doing with
your hand it makes me uncomfortable it
makes me more uncom I’ll probably be
sore tomorrow two throws yeah yeah we’ll
leave it at
that I’m about to recreate one of the
craziest recovery shots ever hit on the
PGA tour
[Music]
this incredible Johnny Miller shot was
hit in 1985 almost 40 years ago and now
that I’m standing here in the 17th hole
at Harbor Town Golf Links I’m finding
that this shot is even more impressive
than I thought the bunker has changed a
little bit the palm tree we can see has
grown a little bit in the last 40 years
there’s so many different variables we
have a round piece of wood here if we’re
a half an inch off we’re going to miss
by several yards so if disaster strikes
I’m going to give myself six Mulligans
to try to pull this off all right first
try here let’s see how it
goes
oh oh look how fast that is though that
green running away that’s what makes
this shot really hard good thing I got a
moldan let’s see if we can better that
[Music]
one off the left kneecap
[Music]
sit oh it’s the same result as the
other oh that could be it sit oh come on
come
on shot number four that’s almost
exactly the same spot although it only
took me four shots I think I got
extremely lucky I think that’s almost a
one in a million shot that I hit and
that Johnny Miller hit almost 40 years
ago today you got to love that recovery
shot having a mulligan in your back
pocket is always
nice this kind of catches your eye when
you walk in the house I see great
trophies and accomplishments what do you
see yeah I see the same I I may think of
him a little differently not that I need
motivation but it’s just good almost
reminder sometimes Justin Thomas is your
latest players champion he’s the FedEx
Cup champion it’s going to be one of
those years that is going to stand the
test of time I think you
can sometimes forget about stuff you
maybe done in the past or or maybe at
least me personally don’t give myself
enough credit for some things I’ve
achieved or accomplished so I think
seeing this every once in a while is a
good thing for me noted okay great let’s
see the man cave
M can we do a little therapy session
yeah I don’t think I’ve ever done this
in an interview before I want you to
close your eyes please take a big deep
breath pretend that I’m your
therapist and I want you to throw some
words at me when you think about last
season what comes to mind you could keep
your eyes closed whatever makes you feel
comfortable
frustrating m
bad
confusing
learning you said
2023 was your least successful year mhm
maybe on paper but personally do you
feel like it was your least successful
year I felt like it was as an amazing
opportunity for me to grow and learn a
lot and I think that I’m very lucky to
have a great support system around me
and a great team that just constantly
reminded me to keep my head up and keep
pushing and looking forward not backward
um and understanding you know it’s
always darkest before Dawn and it just I
don’t know I I felt like I was very
lucky for that help me understand the
highs of winning a tournament and the
lows of a miscut I would say the lows
are lower than the highs are high which
is I don’t know if that’s necessarily
right or what it should be but it just
it feels that way I think it’s very is
that what you think too Frank he takes
on the burden yeah it’s so much easier
to look back when things are over when
it didn’t go well and say I wish I would
have done that or why didn’t I do this
or wish I would have prepared
differently I wish I would have eaten
differently I would have got whatever it
is versus when you win it’s like it’s
great you celebrate you enjoy and then
maybe go to the next tournament who’s
your go-to when you want to process your
game is there someone in your life that
iMed immediately all right I got to call
him or her yeah I mean obviously Jill my
wife is is there through all of it so
she’s the one she fully understands
especially now that there’s definitely
times when I want to talk and don’t want
to talk and sometimes silence is great
but as funny as it is I mean Max H and I
have become almost like sounding boards
to each other we’re we’re eerily similar
and we’re both hard on oursel we’re very
competitive we we work hard we expect a
lot of oursel but with that comes
tension almost so I think being able to
bounce things off of somebody that
you’re competing against and at your
same level is is important and good you
have told me in the past and you said
this publicly you’re a perfectionist and
you’re super competitive there has to be
that fine line have you found that fine
line yet no definitely not I
I I I feel like I’m getting better at
balancing it but I I think last year uh
last last season I got a little tooo
much
into um making things harder than it
than they needed to be I just think it’s
there’s something to be said about
playing like when you’re a kid I have a
couple ball markers that I’ll use to
mark my ball and one of them is the
Kentucky quarter and and marking it with
that Kentucky side sometimes reminds me
you know just play like you were when
you’re a kid wow good one big J thank
you give us a sense of how much pressure
you put on yourself yeah
over what’s what’s the high score that
says a lot I I I I go in waves I mean
when I think when when things aren’t
going well that I put too much pressure
on myself but I I look back at 2017 2018
I mean the little 2019 2020 like years
when I was winning multiple times a
season that’s attacking and J Thomas has
hold it I had a little bit better
confidence and belief in what I was
doing out there in the sense of just
stay out of your own way just just do
your thing and and eventually one of
these next handful of events you’re
going to win going back to what I said
at the beginning means the world that
you would have me here let me into your
home I think you’re just a topnotch
human being you mean the world to me and
uh you’re an incredible leader and
friend and I appreciate your time than
you brother I appreciate that thank this
guy think your Uber’s up front Okay I’m
going to go ahead and grab that I love
the area you know the LI out is so
iconic that’s what everyone knows when
you say har Town my favorite place to be
favorite Golf Course for me it’s
definitely the tournament that I most
want to win outside of a major there’s
no doubt about it and sort of to to get
that be very
special this is like a home game from
here spent a lot of time in South
Carolina this is incredibly special
place for me I used to have tennis
lessons on the the court that the media
centers on and I used to stay in the
hotel and I played the golf course only
a couple times but went to watch The
Heritage when I was younger too the
story is just too good you can go
anywhere in the world and you decide
you’re going to take this long journey
across the pond they connected with it
first time they came here was 2000 and
the family vote was unanimous to keep
coming back countless times probably the
golf tournament that I’ve been to most
in my life I think that’s kind of tells
you how much it means to me that to to
be able to win round there it’s about to
come full
circle
harpertown is the family
Paradise what a family Victory it is to
have the history that I have had there
with with my family going on vacation
when I was younger and to being a PJ
tour winner on that Golf Course pretty
amazing all those years they were
renting houses to stay in yeah he should
buy them one now couple of
[Music]
them thanks for watching the PJ Tour on

  1. I don’t like JT anymore. He’s too happy to be friends with tiger and not worried about his golf game and he’s a has been, like Jordan Spieth.

  2. This is the kind of content I’m looking for out of the PGA. Great interview. Justin Thomas is a great golfer and this was fun to watch.
