so every few years a putter comes along
that truly shakes up the game of golf
it’s met with much skepticism much
cynicism and ultimately just resistance
because Putters are so important they’re
so personal to us and there’s a few
companies a few brands that everyone
gravitates towards but when something
new comes along we don’t want to test it
it’s too expensive and that’s kind of
what lab golf has been all about I mean
are we really wanting to pay six $7 800
for this total new science or are we
just totally getting scammed that’s what
I want to find out in today’s video I’ve
got a lab Golf df3 and ultimately I want
to see if all the hype is real or is
this really just something that you
should totally pass over so lab golf has
been around for a while and their first
putter when it came out man it really
turned some heads because it was so big
and and ultimately so ugly but the
science behind it was was very very
interesting and if you are a bit of a a
club nerd it was intriguing it was it
was very very intriguing but when
something is so untraditional it’s met
with a lot of resistance and people
definitely are like nah n n that’s not
for me especially at that price point
people would rather buy their Scotty
Cameron their Odyssey their spider and
making someone’s switch Putters can be
very hard like I’ve used the same putter
for over five years and the putter
before that I used for five six years
like I’m someone who when I use a putter
I fall in love with a Putter and it’s
hard for me to change my putter so I’ve
seen lab Putters kind of over the years
you’ve seen Adam Scott use it for some
time and then in the last year or so
you’ve started to see a lot of content
creators YouTubers use lab Putters but
you’re kind of like are they just using
it because it was given to them or
they’re paid to do it again you just you
just don’t know but for me what really
piqued my interest and made me go you
know I got to I got to try this thing
was seeing some of the tour players with
some of the worst putting Strokes
completely change their putting strokes
and become really good Putters I mean
Lucas Glover started using a lab putter
last summer he won two weeks and his
stroke was like vomit inducing and you
watched him on those short ones I mean
there’s videos on the internet of of of
some short putts that he’s done over the
years that don’t watch like they’ll give
you nightmares but that’s gone now that
he’s switched to a lab putter but what
really really
changed it for me was Riviera watching
will zalatoris what a good golfer what a
terrible putter especially as you get
closer to the hole but when he was in
contention at Riviera those worm cams of
his stroke was like okay there’s got to
be something to this I got to test this
out so I reached out to lab Golf and
they so kindly sent me through their uh
their custom fitting process their
virtual fitting process and we landed on
this putter right here the virtual
fitting process is cool you make a
little video of yourself you you send it
over to lab and they’ll spit back to you
what they recommend your Li angle and
your length of putter B they recommend
that I go 67° of Li angle I’ve always
put it at like 69 68 and a half at times
I know my li angle 67 was just a little
too low for me so I did stick with what
I knew so that there if if you don’t
know your Li angle I don’t think it it’d
be no harm no foul but if you do know
your Li angle and you get a number back
from them maybe split the difference or
stick with what you know and trust but
that virtual fitting process kind of set
you on the way to then go through the
website and and completely customize
your Putter and that experience was
really really cool like I landed on the
Platinum df3 you pick your lines you
have so many line options so you kind of
have to know a little bit about what you
like or want beforehand because there’s
it’s overwhelming there’s a lot of
options and you don’t necessarily get
the option of looking at all of them you
know face on in your hands so you kind
of have to to know and trust what you
pick shaft options or cool and then you
have grip options and this is one little
kind of criticism I’ll give to this
process because their grips have a
built-in forward press just the way that
the club is designed there’s degrees
there’s one and a half there’s two and
there’s three how are you to know what
amount of forward press you like so
that’s where you’re kind of guessing I
like a pistol grip and there’s only one
pistol grip with two degrees of forward
press so that’s what I was going with I
know I don’t forward press a lot but I
don’t know if I forward press one degre
2 degre 3 Dees I don’t know those things
and I don’t think many people would
there’s not really any answers on the
website so you kind of just have to to
guess it but then when I got the putter
it just felt great the way that it sits
the way that the shaft is the way that
the grip was it just sit perfectly it
felt really good with those first rolls
so you’re kind of guessing but then when
you get it I think the guess work is
over you just what you got is what you
got and it’ll works so the putter just
arrived opened it up I’ve hit a couple
Jude was getting ready for his nap um I
got him down for his nap and I had to
share my initial my initial thoughts and
feedback it’s gorgeous to look at I
thought based on line it was not going
to be so nice it looks so good I love
the lines I chose it just
honestly feels like cheating like it
moves so
effortless e effortlessly you don’t have
to do anything and a lot of potterheads
you kind of learn to to work the
putterhead and I have a subtle Arc to my
stroke I like to forward press to kind
of you know set the stroke I don’t have
to do that because the way the shaft is
the way the grip is wherever my hands
are set at a dress I just have to like
Let It Go and Let the putterhead do what
it’s supposed to do and it just felt
almost impossible to start this thing
offline like I was filming what I was
doing and I was talking to the camera
and then I put it through a gate and it
was just like I had a friend come over
like you got to try this like one of my
neighbors it was special it was such a
good feeling and the look of it looking
down at it wasn’t jarring I really I
don’t like a center shaft putter never
have never liked a center shaft Putter
and that was one of my hesitations you
don’t even notice that it’s Center
shafted you don’t even notice that it’s
Center shafted just the way it’s sits it
just feels so good you just let this
putter head let the balancing do what it
does you don’t have to force it and it
just starts the ball online I wanted to
practice with it before I took it out
but I just went in took it out and my
first round of of the second go round of
59 watch just got to figure it out and I
mean if you’ve not watched the video go
watch the video it honestly at times
felt like I was cheating because I
haven’t played a lot of golf in recent
months and when I do play like once a
month for recreation I’m filming a
little b-roll of testing clubs but I’m
not making putts that matter you’re
raking two Footers three Footers it
doesn’t really matter you’re just you’re
just playing you’re having fun but now
that the camera was running and you got
to put a score on the pen on the paper
having to make those four 2 and 1/2 4
and 1/2 3T putts that meant
something I was a little nervy and I
think there was about two of them that I
made two strokes that I would have
missed with my own Putter and the putter
head just didn’t it just didn’t like it
still stayed right there it was
delivered right back to where it was set
like on short putts this thing is
phenomenal my putting theory is when I
hit you know inside six feet I practiced
so or I did when I played I practiced
pretty much only inside six 6 ft and it
was always like hit your line hit your
line hit your line that’s what I tell
myself so I would set this and just say
hit your line it just comes back to
where it was set just because of the
waiting the
balance yeah it was so cool the one
thing that was a little bit different or
a little bit hard was tappins because
typically with a tap and you just kind
of walk up the waiting of this doesn’t
really do that you kind of I had to
compose myself for a tap in and maybe
I’ll get more comfortable over time but
tap-ins were different like you had to
think about it because you can’t really
like just flick of the wrist tap it in
just walk up you kind of have to let it
set the waiting of it and then do it but
I’m sure I’ll figure that out I was
thinking long putts were going to be
really difficult with this but they
weren’t they actually weren’t I was
thinking I’d have to kind of relearn how
to putt if you will because the things
that I do the thought I have for my
stroke won’t work with this balancing
and it it did I think at times you do
have to just let this putter do what it
does but I think the more you use it the
more it will just it will do it versus
you stroking the putter kind of thing
like the this just does it for you it
it’s it’s pretty freaking remarkable I
can’t wait to practice more with it and
play with more with it because I really
like my first impression is like this
needs to stay in the bag but if I want
to compete more or film more I’ve used
the same putter for so long so visually
I like that look I trust that look this
I’m not there yet after one round after
a bit of practice it’s going to take me
time to just look at it and go I’m
making this putt I’m going to make this
putt but I think that process will be
faster than a than a traditional putter
because you make so many putts with this
thing you’re seeing it on tour you’re
seeing so many people switch to these
Putters because there is something
really really special about it I’m
someone who loves my putter I always
said something really special is going
to have to come along to make me switch
and
I’m leaning that direction I’m I’m so
impressed the process was great I like
what I landed on I just need more rounds
with it and more putts that matter to
drop to fully convince me that this is
the putter for me it’s not just hype
it’s so good but it’s it’s expensive and
if you have the money to spend on a
putter like this choose this over your
expensive other ones because this is a
better putter but if you don’t have the
money I can’t sit here and tell you to
go spend 700 800 I mean this would have
been $730 after tax for me I I
personally wouldn’t pay that much for a
putter like that’s a lot of money I
don’t think there’s value in that but
I’m a good putter like I’ve always been
a good putter I feel like I could putt
with anything but if you have the money
or you have important golf that you want
to play and you understand the value
like the return on your investment for
this you are going to have so much fun
with this Putter and you’re it’s going
to be worth it because it’s the same
price as a brand new driver and you’re
going to shave much more Strokes off
your game with this than a brand new
driver so I think that’s kind of the
best way to look at it if if you’re fac
with like oh I want to spend 700 bucks
after tax on my new driver my new lab
putter this one’s going to help you
shoot lower scores the new driver could
could help you shoot lower scores but I
can kind of confidently say this one
will because you’re going to make a lot
more putts with this I guarantee like it
you’re seen it you’ve seen it on the
channel you’re going to see it on the
channel it’s it’s a special putter I’m
