In this video, Adam talks about staying centered in the downswing. There are many benefits of having a centered golf swing like better compression, square club face, and more! We also use one of our favorite drills to help with a centered move, the lead leg drill. This drill helps the golfer rotate our lead leg (aka the post) without any slide in the downswing.

every inch of sway takes about 10° of
rotation away so if we set you properly
ball right there you see my see my
shadow how it stays right there what
would we what would we see I mean there
it is every time for you every year we
do this and after two swings we go well
shouldn’t we just play like that
exactly yeah so that one I felt myself
slide and guys what’s the sliding doing
think about it just if I’m hitting
towards Kurt right here and the club’s
in this position well if I’m sliding it
just stays there so you know watch what
happens if I
rotate that’s what gets everything you
know towards the target don’t let
rotation pull you out of the shot let
rotation keep you in
it moving into it this way I need you to
be able to stay still and rotate more
around your spine angle that’s where
you’re losing that pop so when you’re
get you’re getting ahead of the golf
ball and that’s what I want to show you
in here you know watch this when
I see it right here turn not bad with a
turn but see that body moving out ahead
of it so when I say out ahead of it you
know if I drew the line
here see how you’re moving ahead of it
and then as you do that you have to
slowly get rid of the golf club and
there’s that loss of power every inch of
sway takes about 10° of rotation away so
if we set you properly and prevent the
two inches of sliding that you have
that’s excessive well essentially
there’s 20 more degrees of rotation that
you’ll be able to move that way so
that’s why it’s important for me I don’t
see you tip back forcing you in to slide
into it you just create the spine angle
with your hips bumping forward stay more
centered and then rotate more around
your lead leg a great drill when you’re
just freely working without a golf ball
look at the shadow Kev come over my back
of my head here um C I love doing this
and I love when the shadow is long like
this cuz watch this I can create there’s
that hip bump without moving my head
there’s my spine angle and then watch
the watch the ball right there you see
my see my shadow how it stays right
there what would we what would we see
we’d
see okay but the ability just to rotate
in one place I used to do this all the
time to train my body what it felt to
stay centered throughout my swing kind
of like Jack Nicholas’s Old Coach
holding holding the hair why do I always
have you do the left leg drill every
year and that always gets you back on
track because it creates that post and
it creates a sensation for you to more
rotate around him every year with you
don’t rotate over it that’s been your
go-to drill for seven years now this is
our old go-to drill that we’ve always
done and this helps Kurt not slide when
he has only one leg you know there’s
there’s nowhere to go so stagger that
right one
back there you go make it even narrower
for me buddy like yeah there you
go put your big toe right in line with
it right there there you go that there’s
the good SP
spot I mean there it is every time for
you and you know what’s funny every year
we do this and after two swings we go
well shouldn’t we just play like that
exactly I actually saw somebody do that
the other day they played like that yeah
and I I tried it when I was when I
played with Tyler last time and
everything was going right I couldn’t
keep in the Fairway at all I tried back
yeah I was doing the takeway the take we
want the toe on the ball toe on the ball
and the reason why I do this by the way
I want the viewer to see this reason why
I put the toe on the ball ball positions
relative to the middle of your stance
being your sternum not your feet so when
you’re narrowing up like this it’s like
chipping right you tell a player to play
it back and they’re narrow like this and
they play it on the inside of their big
foot well think about where that is it’s
still in the middle of their body that’s
why you’ll see some of the best in the
world when they’re narrow almost off the
right outside of their foot because it’s
actually should be off the armpit and
shoulder for that bump and run well
think about this the reason I got you
big toe when you’re narrow well that’s
where an eight iron would be about an in
inch and a half ahead of Center okay so
that’s why we move that off the toe
there good little explanation of how to
do this drill
properly yeah cuz relative to his Center
that ball position is
correct and I think the one thing that I
did well that I I wonder if my students
do sometimes is they do the drill and
the drill works out great but they just
do the drill and then they go back to
their swing and it’s like well did you
connect the drill to your swing now see
I literally thought after doing this
well I felt how that felt in this
leg I tried to create as much of that
same feeling as possible with my lower
body that I that I could and and and I
think that’s what you need to do when
you when you’re in here now create that
same hip shift create that
post be very aware of what that feels
like throughout your
swing there you go beautiful Bud
beautiful swing there I mean that was
right on the money I can’t harp on you
enough about this and our viewer
um the big thing about getting better
when it comes to golf and understanding
how to translate you know a couple
thoughts into a move that’s taking two
seconds um rehe the power of a positive
rehearsal you
know I’ve had the same takeaway
rehearsal for 20 years so it’s why my
takeaway never changes it’s not even a
thought it’s a feeling and I think that
it’s important that we keep reminding
you know you the viewer translate these
thoughts into feelings you know try to
find one backswing thought one downswing
thought try to even narrow it down to
just one thing overall try that not try
to not have that by the time you play
even be a thought but be a complete
rehearsal so for you it’s like yes we do
have 10 and 10 with a nice turn but hold
on that that’s not even a thought that’s
just the thought goes into my
rehearsal and then stay down in it as I
rotate stay down in it as I rotate so
the stay staying centered and staying
down you know you can’t be thinking on
the down swing stay centered stay down
Drive the handle it’s your best swing
just right there came after a complete
rehearsal where not only did you do your
takeaway you did your down swing and all
you did was you got in there on the next
swing didn’t think but you just repeated
what you just felt that’s the key that’s
the
key there it is there it is and when
Kurt does it right shot Tracer I’ll pick

  1. Adam – congrats to getting to 100,000 subscribers! It should be way more and it will be way more soon. One of the best instructors out there – thanks for all you do and sharing your knowledge.

  2. You really gave a great illustration why the hip bump is can create a smooth and powerful swing and allow the golfer to post up & not have an early extension.

  3. Is there a feeling of movement up in the turn in the pelvis and like a scissor to the left and up after, or is the turn in the same angle as the tilt of the back ?

  4. Found you recently and have been watching your videos. Played 9 today and honestly the best i have struck the ball in years. Thanks for all you do!

  5. Hi Adam, I’m finding the hip bump helps me compress the ball really well but I now seem to have a problem with an inside takeaway resulting in some really big draws leading to some hooks. How can I neutralise this whilst having the bump?

  6. There's obviously no one way to do it. Definite things you need to do but look at how much Scheffler slides forward after a centered backswing. What is he doing that makes it work for him?

  7. Adam, LOVE your instruction! The hip bump really helps me post up. I still tend to “hang back” as a tall player. I swear, Ludwig Åberg hip bumps! Love that kids swing. Trying to model it. Would love to see you critique it.

Left leg drill so good. Great reminder for early season “northerner” getting the feel back after winter break. Shawn Clement taught that drill to me in 2013, but you just explained it way better. And your shadow demonstrating staying centered with the hip bump was awesome!

Question on left leg drill: do you recommend doing it throughout the bag (wedges thru driver)? If so, how does ball position change?

Thanks for all your videos, positive energy and excellent instruction. So appreciated

  8. Very interesting. So, you are saying to slide the lead hip toward the target at the set up and then keep it there? Then, stay centered and post on the lead leg?

  9. Its weird how the golf swing is taught differently. Some others so the pros do move foward on the downswing (World Class Golf is one) and that is correct way to do it.

  10. For me I am following all steps as mentioned in video. I consistently slice. But if I follow all the steps as Adam mentioned but slide a bit right and then turn/rotate in backswing, and slide left and then turn in downswing ball is super compressed with a draw. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

  11. Hi Adam, I am halfway across the world from South East Asia, and I have been only watching you for the past 2 months despite many scratch golfer around me said not to follow youtube instructors. But today I surprised them by how much improvement I got from solely following all your instructions. Hip bump, set position, rotate. Can't express my gratitude enough.

Just a quick question from me if you don't mind, I have been struggling with keeping the club more onplane in the downswing as it tends to go under the plane (I used to come over the top a lot). Suspected 2 potential issues with this, 1) I slide during my downswing or 2) wrist manipulation in the downswing. After watching this video, seems that my issue likely due to sliding and inability keeping my lead shoulder down. Question is, I see many pros look like they are "sliding" as well in the downswing prior to rotating. Do you think it is because they do not have the hip bump at address, hence they have a bit more leeway to slide?

Apologies for the long question, thanks a lot!

  12. Have to say im the most complicated golfer youve ever seen 30 years but after couple of months of your videos over and over my game is on theup again
    Thanks Adam
Please come to London at some stage ❤

  13. I keep feeling like anytime I try to swing hard I spin out. So hard to get my weight off my back foot

  14. Your videos are the very best. I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. And I've unsubscribed all of the other golf youtubers, so I wouldn't pick up any bad habits. I'm playing at Bardmoor Country Club tomorrow. Can't wait.😊

  15. Guys, I’m living your content and it’s is nearly identical to what I work on with my coach, former Solheim Cup Vice Captain Joanne Morley.

The staying centred it the swing is one of the key things we work on, as I have moved too far left, or chased the ball as we call it, which is one of the causes of me casting from the top – a fault I still haven’t been able to fully eradicate (my doing not my coach).

My question regarding this instructional video is could you possibly do a follow up with ball position through key points in the bag, please? So PW, 7i, Hybrid, FW and well driver is fairly self explanatory.

I ask this because it’s the hip bump at address and the amount based on club, as to where my sternum needs to be is the part I’m unsure of.

Or if you have a video on that already, could you signpost me to it please?

  16. Nearly everyone else is teaching to move towards the target calling it a "pressure shift" which you're calling a sway & recommending the exact opposite. Personally, when I pressure shift to the target side, or sway as you refer to it, many times I hit it fat either from releasing my wrist angle too soon or getting too far ahead when I shift forward but I'm not sure which. This shift is supposed to help compress the ball because of the reduction of the loft of the club at impact. When videos of pros are shown, you can see them moving their bodies 4-6 inches toward the target side but I can't make it work for me, so maybe it's just a matter of the timing of the release of the wrist angle thru impact.
