This one is for the golf nerds! Today Ian is in the bay to demonstrate and explain the physics behind the gear effect and how Bryson Dechambeau’s 3D printed Irons from the Masters this year uses Bulge to take address it.

Can you do a test on same length irons
Its not deflection that causes the gear effect its CG placement and reaction forces caused by the moment arm. This is why you want the CG lower than the strike point to create backspin and not topspin … its just the same thing in the left/right axis vs top/bottom
Thank you for touching on this matter. I think it is a great time to dive into the single-length iron topic again. Thank you!!
Queue all the comments from builders with a 240 6 iron carry after Brysons Avodas 😂
bulge and roll was on infomercial irons years ago.
Maybe you guys will get his driver at some point and review it
so interesting. Again, these guys are playing a completely different game than the rest of us.
Bulge and roll works always has. It amazes me anyone under 40 ish seems to not not history of golf club tech and the why behind it.
So what would a slow swing speed produce? I assume that over corrects those bad shots off the heel and toe.
Been using the krank fire pro 7.5 Deg and it's amazing!! Swing around 132 average and it's better than all I've tried so far. Very straight and ball speeds are incredible on monitor 🤙
Should get one in to test, I think Mr Fraser would be in heaven, colours match well with the VF 😉💣
I like weeds
Bryson also has descending loft on his putter. No straight faces for this guy!
Can't you forge a club with a bulge? 3d printed irons … what material did they use? I could see Mikey 3d Printing an iron out Tim Hortons Donuts. Also, Bryson still a tool.
Are Bryson's one-length irons a variable in this equation as well?
I’ve been watching a bit of Bryson on YouTube and he uses strike location to shape his shots. He wants to keep his swing exactly the same every time. So in order to shape the shot he adjusts his strike location. When watching his YouTube you will hear him say “I want this to draw so I’m gonna hit it on the toe”
He says this mostly with driver but I’ve noticed him also do it with irons.
So I think this has less to do with trying to hit it straight and more that Bryson wants a swing we can hit exactly the same way every shot but still get the shape out of the ball that he wants.
Everyone focuses on his swing speed but in this case I think this is more about his single plane swing and him applying the scientific method to get repeatable shots that don’t rely on feel.
He’s dialed in every swing the same with repeatable changes. He knows exactly how far a 60 degree wedge will go based on the clock method to 15 minute intervals. He knows exactly how far his putts go based on how far he takes back his club. He measures everything precisely on the golf course.
So unlike most equipment that is designed to hit straight with off center shots, Bryson actually wants shape with different strike locations. This is why his equipment doesn’t work for regular players and not necessarily his swing speed which has been more and more common on tour.
I don’t play golf but I like any one that want to change the norm and seems Bryson is willing to try something new.
What's key to any of the things Bryson is working on it involves his swing speed, which very few if any of us actually have
Guy in the black doesn’t belong on this channel. I’m sorry but every video I watch he contributes nothing.
I have an old Controller 1 iron that has a curved face and it does seem to shape the ball more than my normal driving iron.
Golf Nerds – "ONE OF US! ONE OF US!"
Just use the Tiger irons and shoot at every pin like Scottie 😂
Are we sure that he's just not a moron? There is almost no gear effect with irons. Even with his speed, single length irons, and stupid lofts the roll/bulge doesn't matter. Throw in lie, and god forbid he wants to curve a shot, then throw in the fact he doesn't miss the center anyway…its just a way for people to talk about him…its not real science. Its much more catered to marketing to bad golfers.
Anyone else remember the Wilson 1200 GE (Gear Effect) irons from back in the day?
Great video and explanations thanks for more great content for us total golf nerds.
Best thing to come out of last weekend was everyone realizing how much they missed having Bryson around. 🥹
As a golf nerd, I really appreciate this content. Keep up the good works lads!
Man, their heel and toe strikes are like half the difference of mine 😢
Class is in session!
Too technical for me.
Excellent video guys! Appreciate the gear talk. I am definitely a golf nerd and really enjoy these technical discussion. I look forward to the review of the Avodoa irons one day. great stuff!
Now this has to be The Best video on golf physics i have
Ever seen. Well done, Ian!!!
And Bryson is the only LIV player i like and will watch.
I would love to see a "scientific" series where Ian uses slow motion video to explain some of these things. I love to nerd out and I'm sure there's a bunch of viewers who would like to see that.
You guys should have Bryson on the show. I bet he'd come out and talk specs with you all, he's a huge gear nerd.
Hogan did something similar. Every 2 irons in succession were the same length. Not revolutionary, just revisiting.
Bryson is worried about a few things, but one is not money! 3d printed sets for all! ( the crowd cheers!)
